EXCERPT

TO THE READER

There are twenty-six attributes and practices outlined in this book, one corresponding to each letter of the English alphabet. I have dedicated a short chapter to each of these.

My intention is for the reader to take a chapter a day or one each week, much like a devotional, which will allow for a regular cadence of personal reflection time. In an effort to try to help in this regard, I’ve included a section at the end of each chapter entitled, “Stepping Toward Transformation.” This is my way of trying to provide some practical ways in which you may lean into the attribute or practice presented.

September 14, 2021 by Krystal M. Anderson

Living as the assistant keeper at the Puffin Point lighthouse for four years, Leonard Tarby admires everything about his coastal home: sweeping ocean seascapes, lush, tangled forests, and unobstructed views of the stars he enjoys charting. There was only one thing Leonard would change, and that is the absence of a loving bride by his side. Certain the only way to achieve that goal is to send for a bride through the mail, Leonard sits back to wait for her arrival, dreaming of a life of wedded bliss soon to come. The young lady is soon on her way to Puffin Point but goes missing en route. Is there foul play involved or did she simply get cold feet? Will Leonard ever have a bride of his own? Find out in this sweet historical romance full of dangers, intrigue, and love, all beneath the ever-watchful beam of a Pacific lighthouse.

Excerpt

Oh, what new creations would he set eyes upon this time? Leonard squinted into the tube’s aperture and made some angle adjustments, marveling at the cluster of stars coming into focus. He stepped back from the instrument and gazed at the sky to locate the nearest constellation before peering through the telescope again. A small notebook tucked into the case came out next, which comprised all of Leonard’s notes and hand-drawn charts of the sky at different times of year. He catalogued the cluster, taking great care to appropriately note the sizes of each star. If only he could purchase a spectroscope so that he might ascertain what elements made up the phenomenon he was looking at. But no, he was grateful for the telescope and the revelations it made plain. He could stare through its lens every night for the rest of his life and discover something new each time.

Gazing at the heavens always left him with a greater confirmation that God was a supreme Creator, one possessing matchless creativity and wisdom. There beside the lighthouse, Leonard said a prayer of gratitude for the life he’d found. He pled for the safety and well-being of the Tuckers and his own bride-to-be. Would she find solace and satisfaction by his side? Perhaps she’d enjoy astronomy as much as he. The journey from Connecticut to Oregon would take months. Leonard heaved a sigh and began packing up his telescope. Orissa. Hers was a name that a star could bear. Perhaps, if he scoured the heavens thoroughly during the next few months, Leonard could find one lovely enough to earn it. Maybe then Orissa would see just how much he loved her already.

Review: Remembering Jamie by Nichole Van

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

Miss Eilidh Fyffe always assumed her life would follow a predictable pattern—meet a charming man, fall in love, marry, and live happily ever after. But when an accident damages her memory, she is left with only questions. Has she already fallen in love and married? If only she could remember...

Master Kieran MacTavish has spent six years searching for his lost wife. But, turns out, finding Eilidh alive is only the beginning of the battle. She has no memory of him—no recollection of their courtship, love, or handfasting. Refusing to be discouraged, Kieran relishes the chance to make Eilidh fall for him all over again. Surely he can rekindle the flame of their love.

But the intervening years have changed them both. Eilidh is crippled by grief—the deaths of her father, her younger brother, Jamie, and others overwhelm her. And the more Kieran comes to know this new Eilidh, the more he is haunted by the woman she once was.

Throughout it all, one question looms large—
Is your love still your love if the person they once were no longer exists?

My Review

So emotional and heartbreaking! But after all that Kieran has been through, it's such a relief for him to have Jamie with him again, even under the circumstances. She seems to be in an impossible situation- married to someone she barely remembers from her youth, about to be engaged to a good but boring man, and haunted by a conniving captain out for revenge. It was interesting how her personality reverted back to how she was before the voyage, where her memory loss last allowed her to remember. The traumatic events she endured pushed her mental state into a post traumatic stress state, associating fear and danger with her memories, and her coping mechanism was to retreat to the safety of not feeling. Kieran is desperate for her to remember, not only for his sake, but for her own safety. They get to know each other all over again with how much has changed over the years. I loved the insights Kieran has into the differences and similarities between both sides of the same woman- Jamie and Eilidh. She feels like two different people, and it was fascinating to see how they merged to create a whole new personality as she stands up for herself, is introspective as to what she wants for her future, and resurfacing memories begin to influence her. Her fight against the powerful chemistry between her and Kieran really gave him a run for his money, and I loved how determined he was to rewin her heart. The subplot of the vengeful captain and the threat from the hearing adds tension and suspense, and finally brings closure to the overarching backstory that continued through each book in the series. I loved this journey with each member of the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan!

But beginning in 2018, Hinckley decided to pursue another dream: writing and staging a full-fledged musical production. The story, inspired by many of Hinckley’s personal experiences, features an ensemble cast of 12 performers led by Hinckley starring as “Dylan.” Dylan moves his family to Nashville with dreams of people singing his songs by heart, but life takes a tragic turn one December destroying his love of Christmas. Needing just one hit to pull him from the brink, he decides to write a musical script in a last-ditch effort to save his dreams and matter to someone.

Dylan discovers that his little girl Sadie has an intuitive connection to Heaven and a familiar passion for music just like him. With a wisdom beyond her years, and help from a “special angel”, Dylan re-discovers a love for Christmas and peace concerning the past. With God’s grace, support from an amazing wife and family, and a gritty never give-up attitude, he realizes that his most important dreams are right in his own living room.

“It truly is a dream come true to premiere ‘The Best Thing about Christmas’ for audiences in Utah,” said Hinckley. “We feel the story and songs will resonate with audiences from young to old and help spread a timely message of hope, redemption, and the spirit of Christmas to people everywhere.”

EXCERPT

Everly gazed into the trees. One of her favorite parts of living on the resort was the disconnect from the busyness that seemed to consume everyone’s life. Being outside had once felt like being inside to her—inside God’s creation, like a huge, peaceful church of His making. She’d felt safer outside than in, and Isaac had once understood that. Even felt the same.

But Everly couldn’t find peace anywhere now. Inside or out.

Grieving her father's sudden death, Lady Ada Whitworth's childhood stutter resurfaces. She seeks solace in her charcoal sketches secretly published in London's Thames & Times newspaper. Her brother's sharp tongue and quick temper shame Lady Ada into complete silence but not before she overhears his traitorous plot to kill the queen at the upcoming International Ball.

Mute and heartbroken, Lady Ada's private pain is mistaken for arrogance, earning the ire of society. The Duke of Girard is tasked with sniffing out the elusive French spy called Tailor while an anonymous artist pokes fun at the duke's failed pursuit, taunting him every step of the way. With the upcoming International Ball just weeks away, the Duke will stop at nothing to bring stability back to his beloved Britain-including finding the artist behind the sketches.

When Lady Ada's accused brother disappears, she becomes the target of the Duke's wrath, assuming her silence is from guilt, not grief. To loosen her tongue, the Duke demands Lady Ada be interrogated at his estate, a home hidden in the wild Welsh countryside. She sweeps the chimney, launders her clothes and helps the cook-she will do anything but speak to the Duke.

Lady Ada's quiet service softens the Duke, his mind often turning to thoughts of her. But can he earn Lady Ada's trust in time to save the queen?

Most women her age were paraded about by mothers eager for a match, but Ada would never have a season. The late earl provided a stipend for his wife, but the cost of readying for a season was more than their meager living could afford. Even now, when her sketches had tripled their income, Ada preferred to hire servants—not an expensive season. She was without true rank and dowry. Her future was made by her own two hands, thank you very much.

Paint Me Fearless
(Shady Gully #1)
By Hallie Lee
Contemporary, Christian Fiction
Paperback, ebook & audiobook, 322 Pages
January 6, 2021 by WordCrafts Press

Although their petite appearances are strikingly similar, ROBIN and DESIREE (DESI) have little in common. When Desi moves to the small town of Shady Gully, Louisiana, the unpopular Robin feels diminished by the new girl's notoriety.

But fate has other ideas, and as these two isolated girls are drawn together, a friendship born in high school evolves into a bond that promises to last a lifetime. Even as their paths diverge, and they clumsily marry and plow through raising families of their own, they remain true.

Even as they nurse their respective bruises, and carry their traumas from childhood into their own marriages, they always have each other's backs. Even when a sordid secret from their past emerges to threaten their families, together...they remain a force to be reckoned with.

Until years later, when they're enjoying the prime of their lives, a stunning rumor surfaces that threatens their lifelong connection. The allegation suggests that one has betrayed the other.

Truth? Lie? Does it matter? Sometimes just the hint of betrayal is enough to ruin a lifelong bond.

As their worlds collide, and old insecurities rise to the forefront, the layers of Desi and Robin's legendary friendship begin to unravel.

Just when it seems they've lost everything, the truth brings them full circle...and in their brokenness they come to realize that there is only one true way to fill the emptiness inside, to quiet the lies...and to ultimately become...fearless.

Author Interview

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Sure! I was born and raised in Louisiana, and very much inspired by my mom, who was a voracious reader. Because she encouraged my aspirations, I began writing short stories in high school, then tried my hand at romance novels in my twenties. But it was when my family moved Santa Fe, New Mexico, that I really honed my writing skills.

The exposure to such a creative movie making town gave me the opportunity to attend writing conferences and classes. I learned to write screenplays, and met Ronnie Clemmer, the producer of A League of Their Own. He saw something in me he wanted to mentor, and I really feel his tutelage and insight made me a better, more mature writer.

We eventually left Santa Fe and moved to Kentucky, and the southern landscape inspired me. It brought me back to my roots, and I wanted to try – one more time – to write a novel.

Paint Me Fearless was the result, and with it, the Shady Gully Series was born!

What do you do besides writing?

I love to bake. I love to read. And I love to binge watch! Mostly though, I love hanging out with my family and my pets!

Do you have images you can share that come close to how you picture your characters? Do you like to find visual inspiration for your characters before or during your writing process?

Visual images are very inspiring, aren’t they? Because the story begins when my characters are in junior high, and ends when they are middle aged, my “pictures” of them evolved over time.

I’d LOVE to share with you a one-minute trailer I made for PAINT ME FEARLESS, where you’ll see a few “images/silhouettes” of Desi and Robin. Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to read PAINT ME FEARLESS afterward.

Paint Me Fearless Trailer at Hallie Lee's Website

What are some songs that you listened to or inspired you while writing your book?

What a great question! I’m one of those weird writers who can’t listen to music while I write. I LOVE music, and become absorbed in it when I listen, so it would be impossible for me to do both at the same time. However, there are many songs that inspired me with scenes such as Fear Is a Liar, by Zach Williams, Ain’t No Grave by Bethel Music, and Do It Again by Elevation Worship.

What message would you like readers to ultimately take away from the book?

My hope is that Desi and Robin’s journey inspires readers, and that they come away with the strength to overcome the lies the devil tells them about themselves. I really believe fear, shame, and regret can steal our lives, and my biggest triumph would be for readers to get to the last page and say, “No more!”

What can we look forward to coming from you in the future?

The Shady Gully Series continues on October 6, 2021, and promises thought provoking, relatable journeys whose cast of characters tend to be ornery, but loveable, dramatic, but kind, and quirky, but smarter than they appear.

Here’s a little teaser for Book 2…

The much-anticipated second book in The Shady Gully Series picks up five years after Paint Me Fearless, Hallie Lee’s Best Selling Contemporary Christian Fiction novel.

Book Two opens with a secret burial in the night. Amid a blinding, hellacious storm, a man digs a grave. He’s covered in blood, and he appears culpable. Guilty even. He also looks heartbroken…

About the Author

Born and raised in Louisiana, most of Hallie Lee’s screenplays and novels are set in the south. Inspired by a landscape rich with cantankerous, salt of the earth folks, Hallie’s characters tend to be dramatic, but kind, and quirky, but smarter than they appear.

A move to the creative community of Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2005 gave her the opportunity to take up screenwriting. As her screenplays were recognized with awards and placements in various contests, she had the opportunity to learn from award winning talents like Kirk Ellis (The John Adams miniseries) and Ronnie Clemmer (A League of Their Own).

But alas, her heart is southern, and when she and her family made another move to Kentucky, it renewed her passion for writing novels. And southern story telling.

Paint Me Fearless is the first in The Shady Gully Series, a series which promises thought provoking, relatable journeys whose cast of characters tend to be ornery, but loveable.

It’s women’s literature. It’s book club fiction. It's faith based. It’s Hallie Lee.
