An out of place noise had her stopping. “Did you hear something?” Charlotte’s eyes darted through the darkness looking for danger.

Jonas glanced around uneasily. “It’s coming from behind us.”

A second later, another sound came from their left, and then their right. With a sinking sensation, Charlotte realized they were surrounded. The enemy had found them and were closing in.

“I’m sorry I took Callie off the leash.” Olivia gazed at the animal. “If anything had happened to her, I would have never forgiven myself. Please, I hope you’ll accept my apology.”

Jake nodded. “There’s no need to apologize. I should have crated her, so let’s forget about it. The important thing is that we work together to get Callie trained, so that she can assist Myrna.” Jake looked down at Callie. “Are you ready to go home?”

Callie jumped to her feet and barked.

Jake turned to Olivia. “I think she’s hungry. Let’s head home.”

Olivia took quick, shallow breaths as they headed toward the SUV. Why did the thought of being alone in the car with Jake suddenly make her nervous?

Once inside, they both secured their seat belts. A spicy, masculine scent filled the air. Whatever their disagreements were about moving her grandmother, she couldn’t deny the man was easy on the eyes. Way too easy.

Review: The Ladies Rewrite the Rules Suzanne Allain

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

From the author of Mr. Malcolm's List comes a delightful romantic comedy set in Regency England about a widow who takes high society by storm.

Diana Boyle, a wealthy young widow, has no desire to ever marry again. Particularly not to someone who merely wants her for her fortune.

So when she discovers that she’s listed in a directory of rich, single women she is furious, and rightly so. She confronts Maxwell Dean, the man who published the Bachelor’s Directory, and is horrified to find he is far more attractive than his actions have led her to expect. However, Diana is unmoved by Max’s explanation that he authored the list to assist younger sons like himself who cannot afford to marry unless it’s to a woman of means.

She gathers the ladies in the directory together to inform them of its existence, so they may circumvent fortune hunters’ efforts to trick them into marriage. Though outraged, the women decide to embrace their unique position of power and reverse the usual gender roles by making the men dance to their tune. And together… the ladies rewrite the rules.

My Review

The title of this book filled me with anticipation, and the story did not disappoint! It was delightfully humorous, with vibrant characters and depth of emotion. I enjoyed the journey of Diana, Maxwell, and their friends as they navigate the rules of Society and how they redefined their roles and themselves.

According to society at the time, younger sons had few options for their future without lowering their societal class. One of those options was to marry a woman with a large dowry or independently wealthy, such as the widow of a rich man. Those who pursued this course were labelled "fortune hunters" and looked upon with suspicion. How was a woman to know that she was valued for more than her financial assets? That she would be treated as well after the marriage as during the courtship? Maxwell proved sincere in his desire to assist both the men and women in these circumstances, although some misused his directory, bringing the criticism, wrath, and retaliation of many of the women listed. I loved that these women met and bonded, even though there was an array of perspectives and opinions on courtship, marriage, and men. The women's actions to take control and turn the tables were fodder for the gossips, and they had a fine line to walk without falling over into disfavor or ruin.

The story follows multiple characters who eventually pair off, but not before we see the layers peeled back and learn the motivations, nuances, and desires of those making up the ensemble cast. While there are a good number of ladies and gentlemen, a few are brought to the forefront as the focus, and the romance between each couple is sweet and genuine, filled with banter, misunderstandings, and reconciliations. Highly entertaining!

Excerpt

He shook his head. “You would not be safe.” He continued, “At Lord Sherborne’s urging, I’ve purchased a common license.”

My breath caught. I repeated his words, “A common license?” He spoke of a union. Of marriage.

“It is only fair.” He pushed a hand through his hair again. “I’m the one who brought you here into this dark lair. I take full responsibility for your safety.”

My face burned. “I would not force you to suffer the consequence of an unwanted marriage.”

“Suffer?” Amusement bent around his lips. He bent to my ear. “I assure you, being married to you would be no trial.”

“We haven’t known each other but a few weeks, and yet—” I stumbled through the tangled vines of my thoughts and feelings.

He finished my sentence. “And yet I feel as though we’ve known each other forever. I’ve never met a better woman.” His voice grew serious and quiet. “Nor do I wish to meet another. You’re all I have ever hoped for.”

Excerpt

Until her debacle with Palmer this afternoon, the manor had been the hot topic. Speculation became that the Forsythes willed the home to their grandchildren in Scotland, which is why it remained vacant. For a brief stint in the nineties and another in the early two thousands, the house held signs of life, although the town never saw whoever inhabited it. Then, earlier this year, the doors opened once more. Renovations began taking place. Lights shone through the windows at night. But again, the new owner remained an unknown. Had someone purchased the home? Did it still remain in the Forsythe family? Though theories ran rampant, no one had learned the name of the person behind Halstead Manor’s reawakening.

She held up the thick white card, zeroing in on the signature. If she had to guess, the person bringing life back to the manor was named Caspar. And she had between now and tomorrow morning to collect any information she could on him. She loved a good puzzle, and this invitation presented her with one she had every intention of solving.

Book Tour & Review: The Lily of Ludgate Hill by Mimi Matthews

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

Fortune favors the bold—but is a confirmed spinster daring enough to loosen the reins and accept a favor from the wicked gentleman who haunts her dreams?

Lady Anne Deveril doesn’t spook easily. A woman of lofty social standing known for her glacial beauty and starchy opinions, she’s the unofficial leader of her small group of equestriennes. Since her mother’s devastating plunge into mourning six years ago, Anne voluntarily renounced any fanciful notions of love and marriage. And yet, when fate puts Anne back into the entirely too enticing path of Mr. Felix Hartford, she’s tempted to run…right into his arms.

No one understands why Lady Anne withdrew into the shadows of society, Hart least of all. The youthful torch he once held for her has long since cooled. Or so he keeps telling himself. But now Anne needs a favor to help a friend. Hart will play along with her little ruse—on the condition that Anne attend a holiday house party at his grandfather’s country estate. No more mourning clothes. No more barriers. Only the two of them, unrequited feelings at last laid bare.

Finally free to gallop out on her own, Anne makes the tantalizing discovery that beneath the roguish exterior of her not-so-white knight is a man with hidden depths, scorching passions—and a tender heart.

My Review

I loved the dynamic between Anne and Hart! It's like a combo second chance romance/enemies to lovers story. There are a variety of complications that they are each dealing with in their own lives, and it's when they begin to help instead of hinder that their banked feelings flare back to life. Family loyalty is strong in both- Anne with placating her long-grieving eccentric mother, and Hart with secretly supporting his father's mistress and children through the stain of trade. Anne has her friends to turn to, but Hart has been shouldering his burdens on his own, until he impulsively confides in Anne. While their strong feelings for each other have always been there, there are past hurts and misunderstandings that need to be resolved and forgiven before they can move on to begin afresh in their romance. I was glued to the pages through their obstacles and adventures, easily connecting with their emotions. I'm so excited for Stella's story in the next book!

Review: Windsong Manor by Julie Wright

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

A young widow. A gentle stable master. A secret that could change everything. Will Nora dare risk her heart?

The London Countryside, 1820

Eleanora Coventry comes from a life of title and privilege, but even that isn’t enough to prevent her from being wed at sixteen to a controlling and dismissive husband. So when she finds herself a widow at only twenty-seven, the idea of choosing her own path forward both thrills and terrifies her. She knows how to be a daughter and a wife and mother, but she has no idea how to be Eleanora.

She moves her son and daughter to her late husband’s country estate, where she meets Ridley, the young stable master. He is ruggedly handsome, but also kind, and Eleanora finds herself drawn to him. There is only one problem: Eleanora has a title, and Ridley does not.

Ridley Ellis has a way with horses. Even the most spirited stallions trust his soft voice and gentle touch. He has the same effect on people, and when he first lays eyes on Eleanora, he is smitten by her beauty. But he quickly discovers it will take more than soft words to gain her trust—Lord Coventry had been cruel to people and animals alike. But the closer he gets to Eleanora, the more he is willing to share his heart, and more importantly, his secret.

In a world where title and privilege mean everything, will Eleanora and Ridley risk it all to find happiness? Or will the shadows of their pasts destroy everything they hope to build together?

My Review

This is such a lovely story of healing and restitution as Eleanora rehabilitates her defiant and arrogant son along with her husband's recently orphaned illegitimate daughter. Windsong Manor is a refuge from the influences that have poisoned her son's mind, and while her progress is slow, she can sense what is right for him. I admired her fortitude in taking in her husband's daughter, providing her not just with shelter, but eventually with compassion and love. The stablemaster Ridley is such a strong influence for good in each of their lives. He's humble, yet confident, and has a way of putting things in perspective and providing encouragement and support in becoming their best selves. I loved the relationships he developed with Eleanora and her children, and his protective nature as they face trials. All along there is a sense that Ridley is more than what he seems, and I was gratified with how it all worked out in the end.

The Old Lace Shop
Recently widowed Bella White is finally freed from the domination of the overbearing men in her life, but when she enters into a business partnership with the handsome Edmund Archer, she begins to wonder if marriage is worth a second chance.

My Review

I enjoyed reading these three stories that have a strong Dickens vibe of Victorian England, focusing on individuals who are struggling, especially of the middle and lower classes. The plots were engaging and the characters interesting. I didn't quite connect with their emotions, but was interested in how each story would turn out. The settings are easy to envision with the author's descriptions and the historical details. A trio of holiday tales that complement each other well.

Review: All’s Fair in Love and Christmas by Sarah Monzon

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

Every December two things are guaranteed for graphic designer Mackenzie Graham--Christmas celebrations and the annual promotion at her workplace. Those two things are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, the better an employee is at harnessing the Christmas spirit, the more likely they'll win the new job. With her social anxiety, Mackenzie never thought she'd be a contender in her company's holiday competition, so how exactly has she found herself dueling her workplace crush with wrapping paper tubes and using tinsel as her weapon of choice for a much-needed raise?

Jeremy Fletcher's life is meticulously planned out, including how to win this year's promotion at work. Not only will the new position fulfill some of his career goals, but the raise will help him as a single guardian to his twin niece and nephew. Jeremy has barely noticed Mackenzie Graham around the office, but now that she's his rival, he can't stop thinking about her. Her quirkiness intrigues him, and he's afraid that if he can't get his head on straight, the job isn't the only thing he'll end up losing to Mackenzie.

My Review

So sweet, so funny, so festive! I loved the opposites-attract theme with Jeremy and Mackenzie both trying their best to get an edge over the other in the unofficial competition for a promotion. I appreciated that it wasn't merely for personal ambition, but each of them provide support for family members and are thinking of them as they pursue the advancement. Jeremy is a friendly and charming guy, but some of his missteps prevent him from getting past Mackenzie's protective shield. The social anxiety she experiences also makes it difficult for others to get to know her better, but getting out of her comfort zone and making Christmas special for her coworkers helps her in ways she did not expect. I loved that she had a close friend who is always ready for shenanigans and keeps her grounded when worries are overwhelming. When Jeremy and Mackenzie slowly open up and see the deeper layers in each other, their attraction and chemistry develops naturally to something more, and their work relationship shifts as well. There is a lovely balance of humor, romance, angst, and emotion in this holiday heart-warming story that is perfect to read any time of the year!
