Interview with authors

Susan May Warren and James L. Rubart

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Susie: I’m the wife of a man who loves adventure, the mother of four amazing adult children, most who have inherited their father’s need to see the world, May-May to the most beautiful grand-daughter on the planet, dog mom to two rascally labradoodles, owner of Novel.Academy, a school that teaches authors how get published and build brilliant careers, co-founder of Sunrise Publishing, and USA Today best-selling, RITA award-winning novelist of over 85 books. Oh, and I scuba dive. 😊

Jim: I’m a twenty eight year old trapped inside an older man’s body. Uh, my wife says sometimes I’m a 12 year old boy who’s trapped … Darci is the love of my life, definitely my better three quarters. We live on a small lake in Eastern Washington state with our two cats. Our sons decided to leave us when they reached adulthood and we love them dearly. I’m a bestselling, Christy Hall of Fame author, audio book narrator, speaker, and co-owner of The Rubart Writing Academy where my son and I show people how they can reach the same dreams I have.

What do you do besides writing?

Susie: I am an DIY home remodel addict…I love to design a remodel and implement it. It is not beyond me to stop my SUV and rescue old furniture off the side of the road and give it new life. I need a bigger garage.

Jim: You know those people who have few hobbies? I’m the antithesis of that. I love to water ski, snow ski, dirt bike, ride bicycles, hike, backpack, play golf, play guitar, do photography, do sleight of hand, and scuba dive. (But Susie and I haven’t gone yet together. Someday!)

What was your favorite part of researching for this book?

Susie: The music, by far. I have a classic rock playlist and ever time Rem got in his car, I imagined what tunes would accompany his journey to the next location. I also enjoyed playing with time…messing with Rem and his futures (and pasts!) so I could see him grow into the amazing character he becomes.

Do you have images you can share that come close to how you picture your characters? Do you like to find visual inspiration for your characters before or during your writing process?

Susie: For sure. Seeing them is huge…and actually, I like to find a TV or movie character that sort of embodies Rem. I saw Rem in Henry Cavill, who plays a panicked detective in an old movie entitled, Night Hunter. Great movie and great inspiration for Rem!

What are some songs that you listened to or inspired you while writing your book?

The entire collection of Journey, some Creedence, Kansas, 38 Special and occasionally Bryan Adams. Yeah, it was fun.

What message would you like readers to ultimately take away from the book?

Susie: That no matter what happens, your past helps you become who you are today, the lessons you learned were valuable, and that there is a purpose in everything, if we’re willing to trust and wait for it.

Jim: That regrets are chains that hold us back from truly living. If we’re always looking back, we can’t see the bright future coming right at us. How do we know it’s bright? Because there are always second chances, and third and fourth and fifth chances. We just need to be open to seeing them.

What can we look forward to coming from you in the future?

Susie: Currently, I’m working on a 3 book series for Revell, set in Alaska. But, I’m always noodling on where time and adventure could take me…and my readers. So, stay tuned!

Jim: I’m working on my first non-fiction book, about father’s and sons; how to raise them well. Also a contemporary novel based on Satan’s request to sift Peter like wheat.

The Single Dad's Holiday Match

By Tanya Agler
Contemporary Romance, Sweet Romance
Paperback & ebook, 384 Pages
September 28, 2021 by Harlequin Heartwarming

'Tis the season… For unexpected love!

Officer Jonathan Maxwell is just as devoted to his job as he is to his two young daughters, leaving zero time for a social life. Until he meets Brooke Novak. The newly hired community center director is a single parent, too, and also part of his latest investigation. Jonathan needs Brooke’s help if he's going to close his case by Thanksgiving…but she might be the biggest distraction from keeping his mind on his job.

If news of this visit reached Mr. Whitley, it would serve her better if the transaction had occurred during her predecessor’s tenure. As it was, she only had six months to turn this center around, and this wasn’t a good beginning.

“Just gathering facts, Mrs. Novak.”

“Ms. Novak.” She shrugged as they reached the front of the building. “Brooke works, too. The computer lab is on the second level. Follow me.”

Noise crackled on his walkie-talkie, and she stepped back while he answered.

“I’m going to take a rain check on that tour of the lab.” He glanced at the blue sky, dotted with white fluffy clouds against the verdant mountain peaks, a change from the flatter, brown landscape of Houston. “Not that there’s a hint of rain around.”

That smile surfaced again along with a glimpse of his appealing sense of humor, and her gaze went to his left ring finger, which was bare. She blinked away any curiosity about his marital status while he waited for her to enter the building. Though the officer had an easygoing manner, he’d transitioned to all business when it came to questions regarding this morning’s accident. His trail would hopefully peter out somewhere else. The last thing she needed was for the center to become embroiled in a fake ID scheme.

As much as she wanted to return his smile, not that it was aimed at her as anything other than the director of the center, she couldn’t. She liked her job and intended to keep it. Colin wasn’t the only Novak to like Hollydale, not by a long shot.

EXCERPT

TO THE READER

There are twenty-six attributes and practices outlined in this book, one corresponding to each letter of the English alphabet. I have dedicated a short chapter to each of these.

My intention is for the reader to take a chapter a day or one each week, much like a devotional, which will allow for a regular cadence of personal reflection time. In an effort to try to help in this regard, I’ve included a section at the end of each chapter entitled, “Stepping Toward Transformation.” This is my way of trying to provide some practical ways in which you may lean into the attribute or practice presented.

Excerpt

Oh, what new creations would he set eyes upon this time? Leonard squinted into the tube’s aperture and made some angle adjustments, marveling at the cluster of stars coming into focus. He stepped back from the instrument and gazed at the sky to locate the nearest constellation before peering through the telescope again. A small notebook tucked into the case came out next, which comprised all of Leonard’s notes and hand-drawn charts of the sky at different times of year. He catalogued the cluster, taking great care to appropriately note the sizes of each star. If only he could purchase a spectroscope so that he might ascertain what elements made up the phenomenon he was looking at. But no, he was grateful for the telescope and the revelations it made plain. He could stare through its lens every night for the rest of his life and discover something new each time.

Gazing at the heavens always left him with a greater confirmation that God was a supreme Creator, one possessing matchless creativity and wisdom. There beside the lighthouse, Leonard said a prayer of gratitude for the life he’d found. He pled for the safety and well-being of the Tuckers and his own bride-to-be. Would she find solace and satisfaction by his side? Perhaps she’d enjoy astronomy as much as he. The journey from Connecticut to Oregon would take months. Leonard heaved a sigh and began packing up his telescope. Orissa. Hers was a name that a star could bear. Perhaps, if he scoured the heavens thoroughly during the next few months, Leonard could find one lovely enough to earn it. Maybe then Orissa would see just how much he loved her already.

Review: Remembering Jamie by Nichole Van

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

Miss Eilidh Fyffe always assumed her life would follow a predictable pattern—meet a charming man, fall in love, marry, and live happily ever after. But when an accident damages her memory, she is left with only questions. Has she already fallen in love and married? If only she could remember...

Master Kieran MacTavish has spent six years searching for his lost wife. But, turns out, finding Eilidh alive is only the beginning of the battle. She has no memory of him—no recollection of their courtship, love, or handfasting. Refusing to be discouraged, Kieran relishes the chance to make Eilidh fall for him all over again. Surely he can rekindle the flame of their love.

But the intervening years have changed them both. Eilidh is crippled by grief—the deaths of her father, her younger brother, Jamie, and others overwhelm her. And the more Kieran comes to know this new Eilidh, the more he is haunted by the woman she once was.

Throughout it all, one question looms large—
Is your love still your love if the person they once were no longer exists?

My Review

So emotional and heartbreaking! But after all that Kieran has been through, it's such a relief for him to have Jamie with him again, even under the circumstances. She seems to be in an impossible situation- married to someone she barely remembers from her youth, about to be engaged to a good but boring man, and haunted by a conniving captain out for revenge. It was interesting how her personality reverted back to how she was before the voyage, where her memory loss last allowed her to remember. The traumatic events she endured pushed her mental state into a post traumatic stress state, associating fear and danger with her memories, and her coping mechanism was to retreat to the safety of not feeling. Kieran is desperate for her to remember, not only for his sake, but for her own safety. They get to know each other all over again with how much has changed over the years. I loved the insights Kieran has into the differences and similarities between both sides of the same woman- Jamie and Eilidh. She feels like two different people, and it was fascinating to see how they merged to create a whole new personality as she stands up for herself, is introspective as to what she wants for her future, and resurfacing memories begin to influence her. Her fight against the powerful chemistry between her and Kieran really gave him a run for his money, and I loved how determined he was to rewin her heart. The subplot of the vengeful captain and the threat from the hearing adds tension and suspense, and finally brings closure to the overarching backstory that continued through each book in the series. I loved this journey with each member of the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan!

NEW MUSICAL - THE BEST THING ABOUT CHRISTMAS – DEBUTS DECEMBER 10-18

NEW MUSICAL - THE BEST THING ABOUT CHRISTMAS – DEBUTS DECEMBER 10-18
- Nashville-based songwriter Derek Hinckley brings new musical to Salt Lake City-

Wide-eyed and full of big dreams, talent, and passion, Derek Hinckley moved to Nashville with dreams of becoming a hit songwriter. Fast forward 13 years and Derek has fulfilled many of his goals, including becoming a prolific songwriter and performer in a band with his brothers – The Hinckley Brothers. But beginning in 2018, Hinckley decided to pursue another dream: writing and staging a full-fledged musical production. Hinckley has partnered with talented Director Dana Durbano Pearson to bring to audiences, for the first time ever, “The Best Thing About Christmas,” on stage at the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center in Taylorsville.

The musical premieres Friday, December 10 and runs through Saturday, December 18. The show runs at 7:30 each evening (except Sunday) with a matinee at 4 PM each Saturday of the run. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 1 at myarttix.org.

The story, inspired by many of Hinckley’s personal experiences, features an ensemble cast of 12 performers led by Hinckley starring as “Dylan.” Dylan moves his family to Nashville with dreams of people singing his songs by heart, but life takes a tragic turn one December destroying his love of Christmas. Needing just one hit to pull him from the brink, he decides to write a musical script in a last-ditch effort to save his dreams and matter to someone.

Dylan discovers that his little girl Sadie has an intuitive connection to Heaven and a familiar passion for music just like him. With a wisdom beyond her years, and help from a “special angel”, Dylan re-discovers a love for Christmas and peace concerning the past. With God’s grace, support from an amazing wife and family, and a gritty never give-up attitude, he realizes that his most important dreams are right in his own living room.

“It truly is a dream come true to premiere ‘The Best Thing about Christmas’ for audiences in Utah,” said Hinckley. “We feel the story and songs will resonate with audiences from young to old and help spread a timely message of hope, redemption, and the spirit of Christmas to people everywhere.”
