Book Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway: Beauty Among Ruins by J'nell Ciesielski

Beauty Among Ruins by J'nell Ciesielski

Publication Date: January 12, 2021
Thomas Nelson
Paperback, eBook, & Audiobook

Genre: Historical Fiction/Romance/Scottish

In Ciesielski’s latest sweeping romance, an American heiress finds herself in Scotland amid the fallout of the Great War, and a wounded Scottish laird comes face-to-face with his past and a woman he never could have expected.

American socialite Lily Durham is known for enjoying one moment to the next, with little regard for the consequences of her actions. But just as she is banished overseas to England as a “cure” for her frivolous ways, the Great War breaks out and wreaks havoc. She joins her cousin in nursing the wounded at a convalescent home deep in the wilds of Scotland at a crumbling castle where its laird is less than welcoming.

Alec MacGregor has given his entire life to preserving his home of Kinclavoch Castle, but mounting debts force him to sell off his family history bit by bit. Labeled a coward for not joining his countrymen in the trenches due to an old injury, he opens his home to the Tommies to make recompense while he keeps to the shadows. But his preference for the shadows is shattered when a new American nurse comes streaming into the castle on a burst of light.

Lily and Alec are thrown together when a series of mysterious events threatens to ruin the future of Kinclavoch. Can they put aside their differences to find the culprit before it’s too late, or will their greatest distraction be falling in love?

'A Scottish lord and an American socialite discover love during WWI in this gorgeous historical romance from Ciesielski (The Socialite)...The undercurrent of mystery and Ciesielski's unflinching approach to the harsh realities of wartime only enhance the love story. Readers are sure to be impressed.' --Publishers Weekly

Excerpt

Creeping through the back door, Lily Durham slipped across the black-and-white tiled kitchen and checked the hallway before scurrying up the stairs to the main floor.

Moonlight washed over the parquet walnut floors that the white-tied men and shimmering-gowned women of New York society had glided across earlier in the evening. The last bash of the season before the wealthy retired to their summer homes in Newport had been quite a feast for the eyes and ears. No expense was spared to bring in the most fashionable delicacies and highly acclaimed musicians on the Eastern Seaboard for a party that reeled in extravagance as the epitome of society’s merriment.

And a complete bore compared to the hullabaloo offered in the servants’ hall. What girl wouldn’t seize the chance to toss off her pinching satin shoes and kick up her heels for an hour of unrestrained frivolity?

Lily took off the lacy white maid’s cap and skipped up the sweeping carpeted staircase. Her feet ached after all the running around, but nights like this were worth blistered heels and pinched toes. The summer was to bring nothing but hot days and evenings filled with boring card games.
She tiptoed down the hall, careful to avoid the squeaky places lest someone wake up and demand to know why she was returning after all had gone to bed. Sliding into her room, she eased the door shut behind her and sighed with relief. Not a soul was wiser to her midnight rendezvous.

“I sent you to bed over an hour ago.”

flooded the room. Still dressed in her ruby-red silk gown and glittering diamond earrings, Mrs. Durham stood as still as a marble statue in front of Lily’s vanity.

“Oh, Mother.” Lily flung the maid’s cap on her feather pillow before flouncing down on the bed. “Can’t we talk about this tomorrow? I feel much better prepared for battle after a good night’s sleep.”

“Don’t take that tone with me, young lady. Where have you been? And dressed like a housemaid?”

“The servants would have recognized me in a ball gown, and those who do know my face were good enough to keep it to themselves lest they spoil the fun.”

“If your father had seen you—”

“Father never notices me unless there’s a chance to snag the latest eligible bachelor.” Lily untied the apron she had borrowed from the maid’s closet and leaned over to unbuckle the black patent shoes. “You can tell him I tried tonight, but Vincent Astor is recently taken, and Jakey won’t inherit his trust fund for a number of years.”

“That is it!” Mrs. Durham stamped her dainty foot on the thick, white carpet. Her sharp aristocratic nose flared red. “I have tried and tried, but you push us too far. I hoped your debut into proper society two years ago would settle you down to the matter you were intended for: making a suitable match. No man will take a girl who laughs too much as a wife, and before long they’ll pass you over completely for a girl of more tender age.”

“Eighteen is hardly in danger of spinsterhood.”

“Your frivolities will bring nothing but shame on this house.”

The shoe slipped from Lily’s cold hand. This speech had sent a quiver through her heart many times before, but tonight something was different. The finality in her mother’s voice shot fear straight through her.

“Am I really so shameful to you, Mother?”

Mrs. Durham didn’t blink. “Tomorrow Abigail will pack your trunks. You’re going to stay with your cousins in Hertfordshire for the summer.”

“England?” The coldness reached Lily’s head, pushing in on all sides until her thoughts whirled together like a blizzard.

Mark can’t get Lauren out of his heart, even though it’s been close to a year since she asked him to give her space. When she goes to France, he’s afraid he’ll lose her for good. That is, until he decides to go there, too, as a last-ditch effort to win her back.

At first, Lauren is angry that Mark follows her to France. But a joint desire to help a young refugee boy leads them to work together. Lauren finds herself torn between the two men. Worse, she’s confronted with obstacles in helping the boy and even greater obstacles within herself.

EXCERPT

Mark’s name was called by the barista. Lauren rose. “I’ll get them.” Maybe she wanted to break the tension, change the subject. Escape the conversation. She returned, a steaming mug in each hand, and sat down.

She looked at him, her face now purged of expression, and said, “I’m going to France for a little while. I think it will help me to sort things out. I can get closure on my final chapter with Le Bon Voyage.”  She bit her lip and lifted her eyes to his. “And—”

“And?”

She sighed and looked at her hands. “Last year when I was in France, I met someone.”

Mark stiffened, feeling like a cannonball had fallen into a cavern in his stomach. She’d met someone. Up to now he’d been so thankful that she’d never said those words. Now his gratitude and hope melted like ice inside him.  (from Chapter Three)

Review: Timeless Regency Collection: Widows of Somerset by Rebecca Connolly, Jen Geigle Johnson, Heather B. Moore

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.bookdepository.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows:
Rule 1: Be a widow.
Rule 2: Have an impeccable reputation.
Rule 3: Don't fall in love again.

AN HEIR TO SPARE by Rebecca Connolly
Widowhood has changed much for Anna—Lady Lyndham—but an unconventional heir to the estate was not something she had anticipated. Nor had she anticipated that he would have no intention of forcing her out, although he has every right to. And she certainly did not anticipate finding him handsome, charming, and unfailingly generous. But Ned Richards, the new Lord Lyndham, has a world of surprises in store for her, and not anticipating them will become quite the adventure.

THE WIDOW OF LAVENDER COTTAGE by Jen Geigle Johnson
As a widow, Lillian Hunter has never been in love and plans to never marry again, so the rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows suit her just fine. Her days are spent attempting to transform her newly inherited Lavender Cottage into a livable space until Oliver Wentworth shows up, asking for her late husband. Anxious to establish himself as a landed gentry in Somerset, Oliver is none too pleased to discover that a widow lives alone in a tiny run down cottage bordering his new property. The fact that she’s young and attractive only adds frustration to his sense of responsibility over her. And confound her, she challenges his every attempt to help manage her affairs.

A PROMISE FORGOTTEN by Heather B. Moore
Charlotte Ashford never thought she’d marry a vicar, and she never thought she’d find herself widowed with a young child to care for on her own. She certainly never thought she’d return to Somerset to live with her mother again, and Charlotte never thought she’d see him again. But Lord Wilshore has never forgotten her, and he has never forgotten their promise made long ago. Charlotte would love nothing more than for Lord Wilshore to forgive her, but too much heartache and too much time might make that impossible. Friendship is all she can hope for, but that hope may be dashed as well.

My Review

Lady Joanna has a "secret society" of widows that she takes under her wing and empowers them to take control of their futures. Part of her training is to think with their heads and NOT fall in love... but the main characters in our stories of course have a happy ending. I enjoyed each one and the various circumstances that found them single and hesitant to trust their hearts again. The romance is sweet as they develop new relationships and are also strengthened by their friendship with Lady Joanna. A new and interesting take on Regency widowhood!

What could he talk about to get her mind off Noah for a little while? Andrew leaned his elbow to the round Laminex table, placing his forefinger across his cheek.

“What?” Chantelle made googly eyes at him. “You’re staring at me. Do I have crumbs on my face of something?” She licked her lips.

Please, don’t do that. Now, he stared at those sweet lips of hers. “Your mouth looks perfectly fine.” What was he saying? “I’m just thinking of something we can talk about to distract you.”

“Okay.” Chantelle straightened. “What do you want to know? Ask me something?”

He leaned back into his chair and chewed on the inside of his cheek. He’d like to ask her about Mark. But how would he go about it? And tonight probably wasn’t the time to talk about more problems. She hadn’t seemed amused to get a message from him. If she’d returned his ring, they weren’t on good terms.

“You’re a fascinating woman. I’m sure you’ve got plenty of stories you could tell.” The coffee may have kicked in, and he felt a bit daring, a little dangerous. “So . . . you’ve lived the single life for the last eleven years. Surely, as beautiful as you are, you must’ve knocked a few blokes back in line.”

Chantelle coughed on her food, swallowed, and took a sip of her tea. “Not as many men as you’d think, even though I’m so beautiful, as you say.” She mocked him with a shrug of her shoulder, then fluffed her hair, and fluttered her lashes.

He laughed. “Those actions don’t match with your humble personality. But, you must have a mirror and know men would find you attractive.” He was honest. Maybe too much.

She blushed this time. “Well.” She placed a hand on the table with a giggle. “I’ve had a few, shall I say, interesting, male species after my affections.” She burst out laughing and tried to sip but spurted the tea from her mouth. “Sorry, but I find this funny.”

This lady. He couldn’t help but like her. He felt great that he made her laugh. His belly bubbled too. She acted so cute under his spotlight of questions, fidgeting with pink cheeks. Really cute. Maybe he didn’t need that coffee after all.

Excerpt

DAMON FELT LIKE he’d had the air knocked out of him. Vera was dead? He was a father? He wasn’t sure which fact was tripping him more. He glanced over at the boy playing with Duck. The kid reminded him so much of his late, younger brother it hurt. He looked a lot like Damon, too. He knew it. The second he saw the boy and Zuri he knew in his gut something was wrong. She’d mentioned bringing a kid along, but Damon had assumed that meant she’d had a child in the years since he last saw her. He’d assumed that maybe she had a recent breakup and needed to get away. Lots of people came to the Outer Banks as an escape. His chest felt numb. He was a father and had been for the past twelve years and the truth had been kept from him? He’d been slammed and pulled under by monstrous waves before, but none had left his lungs feeling as useless as right now.

Throughout his training as a SEAL, through every covert operation overseas, through the past four years here as head of Turtleback Beach’s Ocean Rescue and Beach Patrol division...and all along he’d had a son. He muttered a curse and turned his back on her. He looked over the rough waters of the Atlantic, familiar with every square inch of the shoreline he lived on, yet fully aware that it never stayed the same. The ocean ebbed and flowed and changed its sands every day. He’d come to believe that he’d finally found stability in his life. What a lie. He should have known. He was trained to expect the unexpected. He just never thought it would involve a kid. Nor was he expecting it to involve the death of someone else from his past. He’d never quite gotten over the loss of his own brother. Or so many of his SEAL brothers in the line of duty.

“Are you sure?” The question sounded pathetic considering the boy’s looks. He had Woods in him all right. Those dark eyes, full lashes and the way his lips quirked and revealed dimples when he smiled were how everyone could always tell that Damon, Leo, Shawn and Lucas were brothers.

“That you’re the father? Absolutely. But you’re free to get tested.”

He might have to get tested if Vera didn’t have him listed on the birth certificate, but the boy was definitely a younger version of him...or more so, Lucas. He looked so much like a Woods that the sight of him opened an old wound. Lucas couldn’t have been much older than Caden when Damon had gotten word, while overseas, that he’d drowned. The memory still haunted him. Lucas had been the youngest of four. Damon, the oldest. And he still couldn’t get past the belief that, had he not escaped his home life the first chance he had, he’d have been around to save his little brother.

A lump rose in his chest and he tried rubbing it away but it grew and hardened when he turned and caught Zuri wiping her cheeks. She’d lost her older sister. He knew the pain she had to be going through. He sucked in a breath of salty air and tucked his hands in the pockets of his windbreaker to keep himself from wrapping his arms around her. There was a time when doing so would have felt natural and expected, but not anymore.
