Brooke JustRead Blog + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Blog + Review Blitz for Brooke by Ronie Kendig, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Brooke Title: Brooke
Series: The Metcalfes #4
Author: Ronie Kendig
Publisher: Task Force Press
Release Date: February 6, 2023
Genre: Clean with faith elements, Romantic Suspense

Prioritizing career over family cost Brooke Metcalfe Mulroney everything—her relationship with her siblings, her marriage, her children. Written off by her family, she delves deeper into her work. Until a life-altering moment offers a chance at something she didn’t know she wanted—redemption. But her self-centered ways nip at her heels as she goes on the lam to do what she knows is right.

Former Special Forces operator and founder of MiLE, Cord Taggart wages war on human trafficking by taking the violence to the wicked, determined to never again let an innocent die because he did nothing. But maybe he’s bitten off more than he can chew this time as he works to track down New York City high-powered attorney Brooke Metcalfe, who is MIA. Then there’s her brothers who have threatened to chase him into the afterlife should he fail.

Tricky are the hours as Cord negotiates many battles: freeing the captives, demolishing the Trench that has made millions off the skin-trade industry, and his growing, deep-rooted feelings for the bombshell in her highfalutin tower. Brooke must put her life—and heart—in the hands of the thick-skulled operator.

Excerpt

“Do you know what happened, how you were injured?” the nurse asked.

“I …” She swallowed, remembering how close she’d come to getting caught. “A-a car. I was hit by a car. There …” Telling them she was being chased would only draw authorities, and she’d already tried that once. “I guess … I just wasn’t paying attention.”

“We will get X-rays.” The nurse tapped into a device as she noted the vitals—and that’s when Brooke noticed her name badge read Min in Mandarin.

To thwart the pain in her back, Brooke shifted—pain exploded through her side. Crying out, she stiffened.

“But first something for the pain,” the nurse said in faltering English. “Is there someone you want us to contact?”

“I—” Cradling her side and screwing up her face bought her a moment to think. Mark and the girls weren’t talking to her.

Her brothers …

“You absolutely cannot tell them.” Mazin’s voice reverberated across her conscience.

“No …” She had no one to help her. Not anymore. Yet a pair of steel gray eyes argued with that. Pleaded with her to call him, much like the dozen voicemails. “No. I’m alone.” She had endangered the kids and her relationship with Mazin, so bringing Cord Taggart into it would only make things worse.

Something sticky.

Missy Robbins’ bare feet met with the unattended residue of sugary liquid on linoleum. The subtle sucking sound it made as skin separated from floor was all too familiar.

Little Bit’s juice spill.Missy sighed. She’d dried it right away but had neglected to mop it for what, three days now? If it were warmer outside, the ants would have already found it. But they were all underground, hiding away and resting. On hiatus. No such vacation for mamas whose babies needed to be fed and bathed and bandaged no matter the season.

About the Book

A Divine Romance Title: A Divine Romance
Author: Ifueko Ogbomo
Publisher: InspiroLogos Publishing
Release Date: February 14, 2023
Genre: Historical Romance Biblical Fiction

Hers is the flawless face no man has seen—except her father.

His is the foreign face everyone reveres—save his family.

The royal decree that couples this unlikely pair will make or break the history of an ancient empire.

Considered a gift from the sun god due to her arresting eyes, Asenath was veiled in childhood and destined to marry Egyptian royalty. The 17-year-old is resigned to a loveless future in the royal harem, when Pharaoh’s shocking declaration forces her to marry the new vizier of Egypt—a mystical foreigner with powers of divination.

Known as Zaphnath-Paaneah, her husband turns out to be handsome, charming, and possibly insane since he worships an invisible god and expects her—the daughter of a high priest—to do the same. Facing a fate seemingly worse than that she grew up dreading, she desperately searches for a way out of the arranged marriage. The secrets she uncovers usher her into a world of intrigue and treachery that questions all her beliefs about men, gods, and love. Will theirs be the most monumental mismatch made in Egyptian history, or will her daring demand for a sign from his god make all her childhood fantasies come true?

Combining original poetry with well-researched history, A Divine Romance is an Own Voices retelling of a beloved Biblical tale that takes readers on a riveting journey through Ancient Egypt and introduces them to a fresh, poetic voice in Christian fiction.

“In a writing style reminiscent of Tessa Afshar, Ifueko Ogbomo spins a breathtaking tale readers won’t be able to put down!”

Excerpt

“You see . . . I would like to get to know you a little better, first. No facades, no servants, no obligations. Just a man and a woman, taking a leisurely stroll.” He reached out his right hand in invitation, with his palm facing downwards. “Please?”

A stroll? This is one peculiar man. Thoroughly perplexed, Asenath reminded herself that she was the daughter of a noble, and nobility was nothing if not well-mannered. She placed her left palm on his right and they began to walk.

“What do you think of the garden?” he asked, making a sweeping gesture with his available hand.

Asenath gave a cursory glance around. “It is a garden.”

If he caught her reticence, he did not let on. Unperturbed, he asked, “Have you a favorite bloom?”

“You are a diviner, so you tell me,” she retorted.

The broad smile he flashed revealed an impeccable set of shiny teeth. “I see you have heard stories about me. As have I, about you. Life has taught me no echo can ever be as trustworthy as the original sound. Therefore, I would prefer to hear about the daughter of Potiphera from her radiant self.”

“I see.” Handsome, charming, and spouting proverbs. Na’eemah would love him. “You may ask what you will, on one condition.”

“And that is?”

“You answer two questions first.”

“You have my ears.”

“What were you doing back there on your knee?”

“Honestly?”

“You said no facades, as I recall.”

“Praying,” he said simply.

“Praying!” she said with a surprised laugh. “To which god? I saw no statue. I smelled no incense.”

“To the invisible God.”

Invisible? Surely he jests; but I can play along. “And what do you call this invisible God?”

“He has no name,” he shrugged.

“An invisible God with no name. Interesting.” He is out of his mind. That explains a lot.

He laughed from his belly. It was a rich, infectious sound, and she found herself smiling ever so slightly.

Review: Sundown by Susan May Warren

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

Former Delta Operative Colt Kingston knows when someone is lying. He may not know the truth, but he sure doesn't trust Tae, the woman who is caring for his ailing father at Sky King Ranch. Behind those beautiful blue eyes, he can tell there is a troubled--and smart--woman.

A few of her stories prove true--he's found the crashed plane and the dead body inside. Still, her story of survival seems too incredible to believe . . . until the thugs she claims to be hunting her show up and threaten Sky King Ranch. Now Tae must disappear, along with her secrets.

But Colt's not about to let her go it alone. And when they discover that her secrets include the antidote to a plague that threatens the world, it'll take all three Kingston brothers to save the country they've vowed to protect.

Susan May Warren brings her Sky King Ranch series to a climactic close with this high-stakes race against the clock.

My Review

All the loose threads from the overarching plot of the series tie together in this concluding book, as well as provide connections to the individual plots in Sunrise and Sunburst. Tae is on a mission to save the world, and Colt's mission is to save her. The epic plot is full of the adventure, suspense, and thrills of an action movie, while also pulling readers into the emotions, romance, and spiritual growth of our main characters. Colt and Tae are so impulsive that I wanted to smack my head sometimes, but with the support of the other Kingston brothers and a network of friends and colleagues, they stay one step ahead (barely) in their quest to thwart the villains threatening them and the country. I enjoyed the variety of locations in this series and it was so satisfying to have the continuing stories of Colt's brothers woven into this last book.

Review: The Rose and the Thistle by Laura Frantz

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

In 1715, Lady Blythe Hedley's father is declared an enemy of the British crown because of his Jacobite sympathies, forcing her to flee her home in northern England. Secreted to the tower of Wedderburn Castle in Scotland, Lady Blythe awaits who will ultimately be crowned king. But in a house with seven sons and numerous servants, her presence soon becomes known.

No sooner has Everard Hume lost his father, Lord Wedderburn, than Lady Hedley arrives with the clothes on her back and her mistress in tow. He has his own problems--a volatile brother with dangerous political leanings, an estate to manage, and a very young brother in need of comfort and direction in the wake of losing his father. It would be best for everyone if he could send this misfit heiress on her way as soon as possible.

Drawn into a whirlwind of intrigue, shifting alliances, and ambitions, Lady Blythe must be careful whom she trusts. Her fortune, her future, and her very life are at stake. Those who appear to be adversaries may turn out to be allies--and those who pretend friendship may be enemies.

My Review

I was absolutely transported as I read this book with the vibrant characters, rich historical details, and suspenseful plot. I only knew vaguely of the Jacobite rebellion, so it was fascinating to be immersed in the middle of the politics and how it personally affected the lives on both sides. Blythe is both caught in between and stuck in limbo as she hides in the home of Everard who struggles to remain neutral- disliking the king, yet not willing to be caught up the rebellion. I loved how she develops a relationship with the youngest of the brothers, and slowly learns of Everard's layers beneath his gruff surface. The pace of the book picks up as political tensions rise and nobody is able to remain uninvolved in the inevitable battle. I couldn't put the book down as the romance burned brightly and the action became more intense. One of my favorites from Laura Frantz!

Excerpt

Pepper sat in her hallway across from the bathroom, back to the wall. In front of her, Victory splashed around in the bathtub while Pepper read from the Bible app on her phone. It was the only time she’d figured out to fit it in, even if she wasn’t sure it was working.

They’d had dinner, made a game out of folding laundry—that for some reason involved karate—and watched a couple of episodes of Victory’s favorite cartoon.

She could hardly remember her evenings before her niece came to stay for the holidays. Now she wondered what she would do when Victory went home with Sage.

She wanted Victory home with her mother, where she should be.

Pepper also loved having her here.

This whole situation gave her whiplash, her emotions swinging back and forth.

Did she want Victory back with Sage, or did she just want to wrap the girl up and protect her from her mama’s instability? The fact that keeping her would be a lot like kidnapping shut down those thoughts pretty quickly. Regardless of how she felt about her sister’s choices, and the fact that Pepper’s house was more stable—and drama free—might be a consideration. If this were a court battle.

Pepper let out a sigh and tried to focus on the words.

Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

Tears filled her eyes, but she wasn’t going to cry in front of Victory. She wanted to be able to pray like that, but the girl saw enough fake tears from her mother. She wouldn’t know what to do with Pepper’s sudden rush of sadness—grief at the fact God seemed to never hear her.

Victory started singing a chorus she’d learned in children’s church, loudly and off key. Which oddly sounded like when Pepper tried to sing. Laughter bubbled up, along with the sense of irony that she grieved so much right now, and yet Victory seemed more settled than she’d ever been in her life.
