Review: The Element of Love by Mary Connealy

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

With their sharp engineering minds, Laura Stiles and her two sisters have been able to deal with their mother's unfortunate choice in husband, until they discover his plans to marry each of them off to his lecherous friends. Now they must run away--far and fast--to find better matches to legally claim their portion of their father's lumber dynasty and seize control from their stepfather.

When Laura befriends a mission group heading to serve the poor in California during their escape, she quickly volunteers herself and her sisters to join their efforts. Despite the settlement being in miserable condition, the sisters are excited by the opportunity to put their skills to good use. Laura also sees potential in Caleb, the local minister, to help with gaining her inheritance. But when secrets buried in Caleb's past and in the land around them come to light, it'll take all the smarts the sisters have to keep trouble at bay.

My Review

This series starts with the heart-pounding escape of the three sisters from their gilded cage, and doesn't slow down as they make their way deeper into California, relying on their wits and ingenuity. The voices of these independent young women are familiar as they remind me of previous characters of the author, even though their backgrounds are different. I admired the way they adapted to their rougher circumstances, learning new skills and making new friends along the way. Quick marriage is a frequent theme of the author, and while Laura has an immediate need for a husband, I missed the developing emotion of a relationship. The plot of the complicated dynamics of Caleb's mission to the gold rush families living in poverty, squatting on a local rancher's land, along with the sisters' goal to overthrow their evil stepfather's grasp of their lumber inheritance, definitely took center stage of the book. It was entertaining, but I didn't feel connected to the characters' more tender emotions. The book ended with a good wrap-up of Caleb and Laura's story, but the overall story of the three girls and their mother is only beginning and will continue throughout the series. Definitely should be read in order!

Excerpt

He cast his gaze over to Grace and finally allowed himself to drink in her beauty. She was ethereal. She was beautiful to behold and when she met his gaze and smiled, he felt as if he beheld the most precious treasure he would ever meet. Her expressive hazel eyes, set in a heart-shaped face, was a permanent fixture within his mind. He knew that were he to spend every minute of every day locked upon her face, he would never tire of her. Her smiles delighted him and when he was the cause of one, it was as if he had been gifted the riches of heaven. She was glorious and he hoped to tell her that presently. And when she was out of sorts, he felt the pain within his own chest. He was a besotted fool and none the worse for it that he could tell unless he counted his wandering thoughts.

“Morning, Tucker,” Rider said when he opened her door. “Captain Simms’s wife is already here and has set up the perfect spot for the shoot.” Rider pointed toward the rear of the van. “Animals in the back?”

“Yes. They’re all in crates.”

He opened the back doors then shook his head. “How did you survive the ride with all that noise?”

“Found my happy place.” And one day she’d see Hawaii in person. She loosened Flo and moved back so the dog could exit the van through the driver’s side.

“You know what happiness is?” Rider smirked.

“Hardy har-har.” Jalissa rounded the back to start unloading the animals. “Where am I putting them?”

“Oh, don’t worry about it.” Rider cupped his mouth. “Young, Trent, Barns, come help!”

She wiggled a finger in her eardrum. “I think your voice carries well enough without you shouting.”

“Maybe, but I have no idea where they are in the firehouse. Now you don’t have to carry the animals. Plus, the guys already know where everything is set up.”

“Then I can leave?” She had a load of laundry she could do.

“Oh, no.” He tsked at her. “We need your assistance with the animals.”

Jalissa slowly inched backward but stopped when Flo nudged her. One...two... She could do this. Be near the firehouse for help. She didn’t actually have to go inside, did she? Flo licked her fingertips.

“All right,” Jalissa said slowly. “I’ll just stay out of everyone’s way unless I’m needed.”

“You’ll be needed.” He stared into her eyes.

She blinked slowly. What was going on with her? First thinking Rider was good-looking, and now they were having some kind of moment. She needed to fix this real quick.”

Review: Sunburst by Susan May Warren

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

When former Navy SEAL and lifelong bachelor Ranger Kingston is called upon to take part in a rescue mission to save his brother Colt, who has been kidnapped by terrorists in Nigeria, he is shocked to find among the hostages a woman he knows and could never forget.

Noemi Sutton was attempting to return a young girl to her family in Boko Haram territory when she and the girl found themselves taken hostage, along with several others.

And while Ranger Kingston may be able to get the hostages away from their captors, he'll need Noemi's help if he ever hopes to get out of Nigeria alive.

Her solution? Pose as husband and wife. But when her uncle discovers the union, he insists on a traditional Nigerian wedding--binding Noemi to a man destined to break her heart. Worse, she's discovered the real reason she was kidnapped, and anyone around her is bound to be caught in the cross fire. Including her so-called new husband.

She'll need to figure out a way to leave the man she loves if she wants to save his life.

USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren throws you into the thick of the action in this high-stakes, globe-trotting romance.

My Review

I can always count on this author to take me for quite a ride when I read one of her adventure-suspense books! The setting of Nigeria was fascinating and I loved the things I learned about the people and culture there. The danger felt so real and I can't imagine being in those circumstances. The flashbacks to Ranger and Noemi's first meeting and brief relationship were foundational to understanding their current tension and angst, and their amazing chemistry. I loved how their personalities complemented each other in the best ways. There is also an inspirational thread as both Ranger and Noemi find and strengthen their faith in God and each other. While they were on the run, we have another continuing story in Alaska with the woman rescued from the blizzard and her ties to the Russians. By the end of the book I could start to make out some of the puzzle pieces to the bigger picture and I can't wait for the next book to see how they fit together and especially Colt and Tae's romance!

GUEST POST

From author Pamela Desmond Wright

Finding my Inspiration

In Finding Her Amish Home, the reader is introduced to Maddie Baum and her son, Josh. The book opens in an Amish grocery when Abram Mueller and his Gran’pa Amos catch Josh stealing. Having been told no to a treat, the boy has mistaken bars of baker’s chocolate for candy and has stolen a couple of bars. Maddie is mortified and apologizes profusely. This event, seemingly so small, sets off a chain of events that will reveal a terrible secret Maddie has been hiding.

In order not to spoil the book for readers, I won’t give away any details. I will say what a joy this book was to write. The road to publication wasn’t easy. It was my first try at Amish fiction, and I wasn’t sure I could pull it off. In 2012, after years of writing paranormal and contemporary adult romance, I realized that I was no longer happy with the books I was producing. Yes, they were quick and easy to write, but with each new release, I found myself highly unsatisfied with what I had produced. It came to a point where I was unhappy with the career path I’d chosen. So I did what many people told me was crazy. I walked out, leaving contracts unfulfilled and money uncollected.

Nine years passed. I had no desire to write and didn’t miss the pressure of outlines, deadlines, and all the things that go with bringing a book into the world. Still, I wasn’t content. Something was missing from my life, but I didn’t know what.

Quite by accident, I happened upon an article mentioning Amish romance. As I read the article, I found myself fascinated by the Amish culture of faith, family, and devotion to community. Believe it or not, I grew up playing in an authentic log cabin, complete with a wood burning stove. Rescued off the prairie, my grandfather rebuilt the cabin on his property and furnished it with many of the things he and my grandmother had saved from her own childhood, brought across the high plains in a covered wagon from Oklahoma back in the depression days. I loved playing in that cabin and learned to cook on the wood burning stove. Curious to read some of the books, I ordered a stack off eBay. After they arrived, I devoured them. It was then I knew what I had to write.

Sending up a little prayer, I began to work on a story. Once I had enough material, my new agent sent the book around to editors. To my delight, it sold! Suddenly I was a Love Inspired author! Though it took me almost 30 years, I’d achieved my dream of writing for Harlequin.

Going back around to Finding Her Amish Home I hope you’ll want to pick up a copy and discover the secret Maddie’s been keeping…

With love and light,

Pamela

EXCERPT

Paul reminds us that “this world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31), and that “outwardly we [too] are wasting away” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Our relationship with God and our future with Him, however, are certain and long-lasting. So then let us not get caught up in worldly affairs, and let us not give our physical bodies and earthly homes undue importance. We can ask God to “teach us to number our days” (Psalm 90:12) so we can live wisely between mortality and immortality with the blessed hope of heaven bubbling over from our hearts.

Our immigrant identity reminds us that we are simply passing through and that each step on this journey is taking us closer to our eternal home. Our God-given heavenly citizenship informs us of the connectedness between our testimony on earth and our glory in heaven. What a privilege it is to know that our actions on earth can be worthy of treasures in heaven! What a joy in knowing that mere humans like us can participate in God’s plans on earth and make our home with Him in the heavenly realms!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born and raised in the minority Christian community in India, Mabel Ninan moved to the US in 2008 shortly after getting married. In nearly thirteen years of her marriage, her family has called ten different places across two continents and seven cities home. The challenges Mabel faced as an immigrant on the move led to a spiritual crisis that drew her nearer to God’s side where she learned valuable lessons about how to live as a citizen of heaven. Her mission is to inspire believers to embrace their pilgrim journey on earth and boldly pursue their heavenly calling. A contributor to Guideposts' All God's Creatures: Daily Devotions for Animal Lovers 2022, Mabel’s writings have appeared in The Upper Room, CBN.com, Leading Hearts Magazine, and (in)courage.me. She hosts a YouTube podcast called Immigrant Faith Stories where she shares testimonies of immigrants, refugees, missionaries, and cross-cultural ministry leaders. She has been serving in various roles in women's ministry for almost a decade. Mabel enjoys reading, traveling, and dancing, but nothing gives her more joy than having conversations about the Bible. Mabel is pursuing M.A. in Theological Studies from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She lives with her husband, son, and Maltese pup in Northern California.

Review: An Amish Harvest by Beth Wiseman, Amy Clipston, Kathleen Fuller, Vannetta Chapman

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

Faith, hope, and love remain forever in season in this collection of four richly absorbing novellas set amidst the wonder of an Amish autumn.

Under the Harvest Moon by Beth Wiseman
When Naomi Dienner is suddenly widowed, she never expects to find love again . . . until she meets Brock Mulligan, an English family friend hired at harvest time. As a sinister presence begins to threaten Naomi, Brock seeks to prove himself trustworthy while struggling with growing feelings for Naomi and her children. Will God open Naomi’s heart—and give Brock his own second chance at love?

Love and Buggy Rides by Amy Clipston
Janie Lantz is a cashier at Lancaster Souvenirs and Buggy Rides, where Jonathan Stoltfuz is a buggy driver. A frightening accident brings Janie and Jonathan together in a blossoming friendship, yet daunting obstacles stand between them and something deeper. Can love kindle into flames that burn away fear and regret—and lead them to a life together?

A Quiet Love by Kathleen Fuller
Dinah Hochstetler, quiet and bookish, longs for marriage but hides in her shyness. Amos Mullett, a simple farmer, knows he’s different but aches for a loving wife. As Dinah and Amos navigate a budding romance, will the power of love—and the blessing of God—be enough to overcome their doubters?

Mischief in the Autumn Air by Vannetta Chapman
When items start going above market value at his auction house, Eli Wittmer is first thrilled, and then puzzled. But when the pieces are linked to an elderly couple in their district, Eli and his new bookkeeper, Martha Beiler track down a trail of clues. Will they solve the mystery before the fall festival ends—and discover an unexpected new love?

My Review

Under the Harvest Moon by Beth Wiseman- 4 stars
I was interested in seeing how a non-Amish man and Amish woman would strike up a friendship and be able to have a future together. Naomi suffered domestic abuse in silence, and Brock was a good contrast for her to experience after her husband died. Without expecting anything in return, he provides support and validation when she trusts him with her secret. I enjoyed how their relationship progressed in a natural manner.

Love and Buggy Rides by Amy Clipston- 2 stars
This author is hit and miss with me. I liked the characters at first, but then grew impatient with the cliché angst and drama. Skimmed until I could find out how the plot wrapped up.

A Quiet Love by Kathleen Fuller- 5 stars
My favorite of the collection! Dinah and Amos are so incredibly genuine and sweet together. I loved how the author made me care about them right away, and being in the head of Amos who has some degree of autism was eye-opening. Dinah is a true friend and has confidence in him, defending him against those in his family who have known him so much longer but not seeing how much he has grown. There is some lovely romantic tension as their attraction blossoms along with their friendship.

Mischief in the Autumn Air by Vannetta Chapman- 3 stars
The romance in this story took a backseat to the mystery of the furniture that auctioned at a much higher price than they were valued. Martha's relationship with her irritable aunt is also part of the story as she seeks to have more patience and love for her. Interesting plot, but would have been more compelling with greater chemistry between the leads.

Review: Love in Plain Sight by Kathleen Fuller

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

She has a secret she’s determined to keep. He’s just as determined to get to know her. These two strong wills clash in beautiful romantic sparks in this Amish rom-com.

Katherine Miller arrives in Birch Creek under the guise of looking for a husband, but really she is hiding a secret she can’t reveal. The small Amish town becomes the perfect place to wait until she can figure out her next move. But when Ezra Bontrager is hired as the Stoll Inn’s new handyman, she at first finds his interest in her annoying. The one time she needs men to ignore her, she can’t seem to shake this one—and try as she might, she eventually can’t help but find his persistence endearing.

Ezra has never been shy when it comes to making friends, and he’s determined to get to know the elusive Katherine a little better. What he doesn’t count on is falling for her or discovering the real reason she’s hiding in Birch Creek.

My Review

I love getting to know this author's characters- they come to life with personality and I'm always drawn into their story. I loved Ezra's steadfastness in befriending Katherine! She definitely needed someone who wouldn't give up when she put up walls, and she needed a true friend more than anyone. The town matchmakers add humor to the story with their antics as they "help" Ezra and Katherine's relationship. The emotion of the story is real as both Katherine and Rhoda are healing from abusive relationships, growing stronger and finding new perspective. Rhoda and Loren's situation has been a subplot through the series, and it was nice to see the unexpected resolution of their troubles. A wonderful story of healing with a good dose of sweet romance! Loved it!
