A Lady in Attendance by Rachel Fordham

Publication Date: June 1, 2021
Revell
Genre: Historical Fiction/Christian/Romance

Five years in a New York state reformatory have left a blemish on Hazel's real name. So when she takes a job as Doctor Gilbert Watts's lady in attendance in 1898, she does so under an alias. In the presence of her quiet and pious employer, Hazel finds more than an income. She finds a friend and a hope that if she can set her tarnished past in order, she might have a future after all.

As Gilbert becomes accustomed to the pleasant chatter of his new dental assistant, he can't help but sense something secretive about her. Perhaps there is more to this woman than meets the eye. Can the questions that loom between them ever be answered? Or will the deeds of days gone by forever rob the future of its possibilities?

Rachel Fordham pens a tender tale of a soft-spoken man, a hardened woman, and the friends that stand by them as they work toward a common purpose--to expunge the record of someone society deemed beyond saving--and perhaps find love along the way.

"A Lady in Attendance draws you in from the first page and leaves you captivated until the oh-so-romantic conclusion. A poignant and beautifully written story of faith, forgiveness, and the healing power of love."--Mimi Matthews, USA Today bestselling author

Prologue

House of Refuge, Hudson, New York, 1893

The coarse gray fabric of Hazel’s newly donned uniform felt uncomfortable and foreign against her skin. She scratched her neck, trying in vain to force the itch away, but it was no use. These drab clothes would likely never feel comfortable, nor would these dark walls and tall fences ever feel like home.

“You’ll get used to it,” said the girl on her right. She looked to be fifteen, maybe sixteen, and despite the dreary location wore a cheerful smile on her pale face. “It ain’t so bad here.”

The girl on Hazel’s left snickered but nodded. Both girls had been assigned to scrub the dining hall’s floor with her and had readily begun answering her questions.

“It ain’t no castle with a moat, but they feed us three times a day, and that’s more than I ate before bein’ sent to the reformatory,” the girl on her right said.

“It’s prison,” Hazel whispered, unsure why they were keeping their voices so low. “It won’t get better. Not until we get out.”

“Won’t be all better when you get out. People don’t trust no one that’s lived behind bars. Once a convict, always a convict. Even if they talk about us being trained and tutored for a better life, you’ll still be stained. Your five-year sentence might as well be a lifetime one. Enjoy the food and roof over your head while you got it.” The younger in-mate pushed her stringy hair from her face with her wet hand and stared at her with large doe-like eyes. “It’s better here’n where I came from. Better’n where most of us come from.”

Hazel wanted to argue, to tell these girls that life outside the reformatory’s walls was better. That freedom of any kind was better than iron fences. But she held back, knowing the world she had come from differed from their world. She’d had money and a family name. She cringed, remembering how her world had rejected her, the pain of her sentencing, and the stoop of her parents’ shoulders. The truth was, she wasn’t sure where she’d be at this very mo-ment if she were not here as a committed prisoner of the House of Refuge.

With her eyes on the dirty water and a heaviness in her heart, she spoke. “Tell me what it’s like living here.” She had been in such a daze when she arrived, she hardly heard the matron’s instructions. “I do wish to get through this time unscathed if I can—and perhaps somehow to have a future.”

“There’s a lady who comes by often. She runs a club or somethin’, and she’s changed it around here,” the inmate on her left said. She was older and less enthusiastic than her counterpart. “She’s helping us learn skills so we can leave changed. They’s teaching us to sew and cook, and they preach. But you gotta work hard too. You gotta listen and follow directions. If you do, you’ll get by.”

Hazel forced a smile despite the nausea assaulting her stomach. Menial labor held no appeal, yet these women spoke as though it were a gift. She chided her ungrateful heart and forced herself to listen despite her innate desire to argue and fight against her lot.

“What you gotta know is that this building’s got three floors, and you move up or down dependin’ on if you work hard and learn or if you don’t. They even got cottages inside the gates for those who are doin’ the best.”

Hazel managed to weakly say, “I hope you get to live there soon.”

“We all hope for that. The hardened women move to the first floor, and there are rooms that women have to go to all by themselves. I never wanna go there.” She was old enough that there were creases near her eyes and lines on her forehead that didn’t leave, even when her face relaxed. She picked up her brush and began scrubbing the floor again. With her head bent, she talked faster. “They have us pray every day, and preachers come and talk to us. I been hearin’ their words since coming. They talk of picking a direction to run in and stayin’ on a path. I don’t under-stand it all, but I figure if I listen to them, I’ll avoid the first floor, and maybe I could have a life that’s better’n what I’ve known. I gotta hope.” Her cheeks turned red. “I ain’t touched the bottle in months now. What you in for?”

“I’m sure she’s here for running about with some married man,” the young inmate said with a giggle. “It’s always men or drink.”

“Nah, it’s always being desperate that brings us here,” the more seasoned inmate said.

“I don’t know desperation—not like you’ve known it.” Hazel took a slow breath as she wrestled with what to tell these women about her past. She had so much regret, heartache, and hurt she could share, but instead, she simply said, “I was accused of burglary.”

“Burglary?” The younger woman’s voice jumped up an octave. “What did you steal?”

The words assaulted her, and she opened her mouth, ready to defend herself, then shut it. They assumed her guilty. Like everyone else, they believed she’d stolen and brought this fate on herself. She swallowed the pain, knowing that she was not completely innocent, nor was she guilty. But saying as much would do no good. “It mat-ters little,” she said. “I’m here now, and I suppose all that matters is if I move upstairs or down.”

About the Author

Rachel Fordham has long been fascinated by all things historical or in the words of her children “old stuff”. Often the historical trivia she discovers is woven into her children's bedtime tales. Despite her love for good stories she didn’t attempt writing a novel until her husband challenged her to do so (and now she’s so glad he did). Since that time she’s often been found typing or researching while her youngest child naps or frantically writing plot twists while she waits in the school pick-up line. In addition to her passion for storytelling she enjoys reading, being outdoors and seeing new places. Rachel lives with her husband and children on an island in Washington state.

 Excerpt

“Uh, I don’t know what to say, Mom,” I stutter. “You’ve caught me off guard.” I lean against my desk and clench my fingers around the edge. “Have you been seeing someone?”

My mom’s mouth hangs open. “Of course not, Nicki. I could never replace your father!”

Relieved, I loosen my grip. “Then who do you want to bring with you?”

“Eleanor’s son, Drew. Remember I told you about him? He’s a doctor, good-looking, and single.” She fidgets. “She told me at work this morning that he’s considering going on one of those online dating apps, and I just figured since you were both unattached, why not skip all that digital mumbo-jumbo and introduce you to each other?”

I sigh. “Mom, we’ve talked about this.”

“But, Nicki, you’re twenty-six and not even dating. How will I ever have grandchildren if you aren’t interested in spending time with someone?”

Someone? I lean over and place my hand on her shoulders. “I don’t need a man right now, and I certainly don’t want children.” I raise my eyebrows. “Not today and not anytime in the future, either. You know that.”

She waves a hand at me. “Don’t start that nonsense about kids and the mess they make. Find and fall in love with your prince charming, and you’ll see things differently. I’m sure of it.”

“I appreciate your efforts, but I’m not looking for someone in shining armor to save me, a fairy tale romance to sweep me off my feet, or the ooey, gooey slobber of a baby right now.” I spread my hands out and whirl around. “As you can see, I’ve got bigger things to be worried about.”

About the Author

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

As a child, whenever anyone asked me that question, I always had 2 answers ready to offer: an author or a Wimbledon champion (that’s a tennis tournament, in case you didn’t know).

Although I never made it to a professional level of tennis stardom (or an amateur level for that matter; the best I could do was local tennis club play once or twice a week), I was able to realize my dream of becoming an author.

But it was a long time coming.

There were detours along the way – teaching elementary school, running children’s ministries, parenting and starting my own organizing business – as well as a few unexpected overseas adventures, but I finally put pencil to paper (yes, I’m old school) and used all my life experiences to write a story that I hoped would make a difference.

With the publication of my first book, Perfectly Arranged (Scrivenings Press, October 2021), I guess I’m finally grown up now and my dreams have come true.

However, now that I’ve reached adulthood I don’t plan on retiring. No, I think I’ll keep going … I have plenty of imaginary people and places to share with the world.

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Worthy of Redemption by Krystina Renae Rankin, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Worthy of Redemption
Title: Worthy of Redemption
Series: White Lake Romance #1
Author: Krystina Renae Rankin
Publisher: Quirky Bullpen Press
Release Date: October 5, 2021
Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Ashlynn Wilson left the small town of White Lake, Texas after tragedy struck on graduation night, taking the life of her best friend Victoria. Now, ten years later, she returns to help her parents after her father is diagnosed with cancer. When she arrives she finds herself having to face more than just memories after she discovers that the doctor treating her father is Victoria’s former boyfriend Heath Lancaster, the man Ashlynn holds responsible for her death. Even more surprising is that she is beginning to see him as a compassionate man of faith caring for her ill father; not the teenage boy who made poor decisions.

Heath Lancaster has never really forgiven himself for his girlfriend’s death so he isn’t surprised that his former classmate hasn’t either. Now that Ashlynn is back in town, he hopes their interactions can be minimal. However, when a situation arises that she is uniquely qualified for, he realizes they are going to be spending far more time together than either one of them had planned. What’s more, he realizes he enjoys her company. As old hurts turn into friendship, and maybe even love, can Heath prove to them both that he’s a man worthy of redemption?

EXCERPT

Heath put his headphones back in his ears as he watched Ashlynn walk off and restarted his run. As he picked up speed, he thought about their conversation.

He’d realized last night on his walk home that if they were going to both be in Ann and Paul’s lives, they needed some sort of truce. So why didn’t he feel better about it?

Because you wanted more. You want her to forgive you, to accept the person you are now.

That was silly, he knew. She was never going to forgive him completely. He didn’t blame her—he didn’t fully forgive himself. So why did he want it so badly?

The Sherwood Proof
(The Lily Sparrow Chronicles #3)
By Kristee Ravan
Middle-grade, Fairytale, Fantasy

Lily Sparrow has finally created an equation for being a good princess. Things are adding up and making sense, and she’s even growing a measurable amount more excited about her future. But unexpected variables keep being tossed into her equation:

1. Carole Claus is facing her first hurdle as Santa. She needs Lily’s help.
2. Lily’s Half-Birthday--an important Smythian tradition--is coming up, requiring her to find time to prepare for it.
3. Her algebra teacher has an unusual (and stressful plan) for Lily.
4. Lily remains convinced that her mom is hiding something from her.
5. The investigation into the traitor is an on-going source of stress and tension at work for Lily and Calo.
6. Oh, and Calo’s still betrothed to Su’Sauna, making life difficult and confusing all around.

Will Lily be able to place these variables securely in her equation? Will the Sparrow family find a way to convince their critics they are good for the Kingdom? Or will everything fall apart--subtracting all the good will Lily has already earned from her citizens?

Publisher: Elk Lake Publishing, Inc.
Release Date: March 23, 2021
Genre: Women's Contemporary Christian Fiction

A heartwarming small town story of faith and forgiveness, friendship, family, and hope.

Welcome to Weldon, where the only things the locals love more than fried fruit pies are gossip and match-making.

Librarian Emma Baker, a young and childless widow, believes her dream to build a family is over. It’s been two years since a student accidentally stabbed Emma’s husband to death, and her grief has stifled any interest in romance—until she meets Pastor Luke Davis. But when Emma learns Luke is counseling her husband’s killer fresh out of jail, her temper gets in the way.

Meanwhile, Emma discovers twelve-year-old Harley, abandoned by her drug-addict mother, hiding in the library, and takes the girl in as her foster mom. Then a young mother is made homeless by an apartment fire, and Emma opens her home again. One person and one prayer at a time, Emma begins to discover hope.

"Every Window Filled with Light by Shelia Stovall is a warm and delightful story of forgiveness and hope. EXCERPT

Note from the author: When Emma meets Luke is one of my favorite scenes because although my book deals with some difficult issues, there is also humor.

At the last stack, Emma divided the books on the shelf and peeked through the opening. The lanky girl in the stained, sky-blue hoodie had been curled up in the chair all day, sleeping. Was that Harley? It had been weeks since she’d been in the library. Where had Harley been since school started? Poor kid missed the show. Emma removed her phone from her sweater pocket, turned, and walked directly into a hard, broad chest. The tall, dark, David-lookalike stranger stepped back and gripped her elbows.

“Excuse me.” They spoke in unison.

“Are you all right, Mrs. Baker?” His inviting voice made her yearn to lean in, to wrap herself in the warm tones.

She blinked. “Y–yes.” Emma slid her phone into her back pocket. But she didn’t have a back pocket. Good gracious. She’d just shoved her phone inside the waistband of her pants. She slapped her palm against her hip to try to catch it, but the device slipped further down. She’d burn these slacks.

“I’m Luke Davis.” He extended his hand.

Sweat broke out on Emma’s forehead, but her palm remained glued to her backside.

“You are Mrs. Baker, aren’t you?”

“Yes.” Her voice sounded raspy.

She let go of the phone and shook his hand. A current of energy traveled up her arm, and she inhaled sharply. In all her life, she’d never had such a reaction to a man, not even when she’d met Chris.

She stood there, dumbstruck, then gulped in air.

“Is there a place we can speak privately?” His low voice implied intimacy.

Emma bit her lip when her phone slipped further down her back thigh. Lord, have mercy. She jiggled her right leg. The phone slid down to the bend of her knee, and she smiled without showing her teeth. If only the dratted thing would fall down the rest of the way. It didn’t. With a sigh, she bent over and pretended to brush something from her calf. Finally! The onyx rectangle clattered to the floor.

EXCERPT

After the way she’d left him, the last thing he wanted was for her to know that her presence still had the ability to make his heart forget its purpose. He pushed back from his desk, stood, and closed the distance between them.

“Wow. Today must be my lucky day. C’mon in, Nina.”

He fought the urge to draw her into his arms, but Nina withheld nothing. Without an invitation, she thrust her arms around his waist and squeezed like her life depended on it. This had been the moment he’d waited for fifteen years ago—expected her to change her mind, admit she was wrong about them, and come back to him. Nina in his arms again had been like an eagle to his nest—home. He inhaled deeply and reveled in the scent of her. Powdery and feminine. His chin rested atop of her hair, and for a moment, he allowed himself the pleasure of having her in his arms again. But this wasn’t real, and she would only be there a short time. He couldn’t and wouldn’t get caught up in the coulda-shoulda-woulda merry-go-round of thoughts.

Excerpt

Zara’s mom smiled. “A Midwestern boy. Very nice.”

Ryan laughed. “I’m hardly a boy anymore. And I’ve lived in Boston for a long time. Almost twenty years.”

“What brought you to Boston?” Zara asked.

“College,” he said. “I went to MIT.”

Zara waved her hand in the direction of his T-shirt and smiled coyly. “Did you? I had no idea.”

He glanced down at his shirt. “Oh. Ha ha.”

“Look at that, Mom,” Zara said, winking. “We’re having dinner with a genius.”

Ryan shook his head, smiling. “I’m not a genius.”

“I bet you belong to Mensa.”

He laughed again. “I don’t belong to Mensa.”

“What did you get on your SATs?”

“My SATs?” he repeated, bemused. “I have no idea.”

Zara leaned forward in her seat. “Come on. I bet you remember your math score, don’t you? You probably got a perfect 800 on the math.”

He scratched his ear. “Uh . . .”

“Oh, my gosh!” Zara squealed. “You did, didn’t you?”

He held up his hands. “I plead the fifth.”

“What did you get on the verbal section?”

“This time I’m being honest—I really don’t remember.”

“I got a 740 on the verbal section, but only like a 550 on the math.”

“I don’t know whether I should be impressed that you remember that or concerned that it shows you’re way too young for—” He stopped abruptly.

Zara’s stomach dipped. Had he been about to say she was way too young for him? And if so, why was she getting so fluttery about it? Despite being right up her mother’s alley, Ryan was totally not her type.

Book Tour, Review & Giveaway: Meet Me Under the Kissing Bough by Josi S. Kilpack, Anneka R. Walker, Sarah L. McConkie #meetmeunderthekissingbough

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

We wish you a merry Christmas and a happily ever after! This special holiday historical romance anthology featuring three heartwarming novellas proves that no matter the obstacles, ’tis the season for love.

Meet Me under the Kissing Bough by Josi S. Kilpack
Deborah Winfrey hasn’t had the heart to host a holiday party since her husband’s death. But this Christmas, it’s time to move forward. The festivities bring renewed life to her home, and the attentions of two very different men promise a chance at new love.

Healing Hearts for the Holidays by Anneka R. Walker
Julia Hunt is strictly forbidden from associating with the family in the nearby manor—including the handsome younger son, Esmond, who quickly steals her heart. With Christmas around the corner, an old bundle of hidden love letters may be the key to her own happily ever after.

A Christmas Correspondence by Sarah L. McConkie
In this novella inspired by the timeless tale A Christmas Carol, John Charleston finds himself on an unexpected journey in the company of the insufferable Lady Caroline Morleigh. But the magic of the season has a way of softening even the hardest of hearts.

My Review

I enjoyed this sweet collection of stories with a common theme of Christmas romance and mistletoe "kissing boughs." They are all set in the Regency era and are written by some of my favorite authors of the genre. The first story is a slow burn, with both main characters moving past their grief of losing a spouse. Even though they are perfect for each other, the issue of societal class and climbing ranks complicates their future, especially when an unexpected guest arrives.

The second story was full of family drama and feuding, conflict and secrets. I liked how Esmond pursued Julia in spite of the obstacles, and was reluctant to give her up. They had some fun banter and great chemistry. The third story featured character growth as it echoed the classic Christmas story, and it was neat to see the way John was able to see into Caroline's heart. A lovely collection of stories perfect for holiday reading!

Mystery, Middle Grade Fiction
Paperback & ebook, 227 Pages

The beasts came and destroyed our world. Kilhaven's founders defended themselves, and for the past 150 years, the walls of this small village, where Jarvis Graye lives, have kept them out. This fall, though, something feels different. 13 year-old Jarvis is living his usual life, dreading school, cleaning up after pigeons at his courier apprenticeship, and trying not to humiliate himself in archery class. At least he’s got his best friend, and there's even an interesting new girl around. But... the strange noises, the dead deer, now the missing boy – the clues are there that something sinister is afoot. Jarvis suspects his weird neighbor is to blame. But first, he must find proof. With Jarvis’s life and the safety of the village on the line, he and his friends race to uncover the truth and stop the one who is behind it all.

Excerpt

It was the witching hour. Thirteen-year old Jarvis Graye ran as fast as he could through the forest. The shadowed rabbit zigzagged ahead of him, leaping off the ground in bursts of soft thuds. Jarvis scrambled after it, panting, trying his best to keep up, but the animal was too quick. It leapt over downed logs and darted through bushes. From the way it ran, Jarvis knew the animal feared for its life, though it didn’t need to. Jarvis wasn’t going to kill it, or even hurt it – he just wanted to catch it and make it back to the fort. He could see the animal slice through the silver rays of moonlight that cut through the dark branches overhead.

Looking up, Jarvis saw the silhouetted, stone wall in the distance – the one that surrounded both preserve and village. It loomed around thirty feet in the air. Jarvis surmised this was where the rabbit headed as the animal bounded across the ground. The wall approached quickly with every one of Jarvis’s strides.

He could see the rabbit’s hind legs, but just barely. It was too fast. Jarvis was losing it. He had one chance, and one chance alone. Stretching out his arms, Jarvis dove and… CRACK!... landed on a branch.

“Oww!” Jarvis moaned.

He rolled over and pulled the branch from his shirt. The end of it had definitely pierced skin. Jarvis lifted up his shirt and tried to look at his wound in the moonlight. It was still too dark to see. Rubbing his stomach, Jarvis slowly rose to his feet, walked over to the wall, and placed his hands against the cold, jagged slab of mortar and stone. Now that he had stopped running and was standing in the midst of an eerily quiet forest, alone in the middle of the night, he no longer felt brave. He could almost taste the fear as it rose from his stomach and lingered in the back of his throat like a horrible, gassy burp.
