She never wanted to come back. He never wants to leave. The town of Maple Falls has plans for them both.

Riley McAllister is living the dream in New York City . . . if the dream means being a struggling mixed-media artist, part-time food delivery driver, and having a carefully curated social media to hide all of the above. She refuses to admit defeat and move back to small-town Maple Falls, but when her grandmother breaks her leg sliding into third base during a softball game (she was safe, by the way), Riley reluctantly agrees to go home and help the woman who raised her—while secretly hoping she can convince Mimi to sell her house and yarn shop and move in with a good friend. Then Riley can return to her new life in NYC, on her own and for good.

But Mimi has her own plans, which include setting Riley up with local baseball star Hayden Price, who returned to Maple Falls after an injury ended his major league career. Now he works at his father’s hardware store, coaches the church softball team, and worries about the declining town. It’s not the life he dreamed of having.

With a little meddling and a lot of kindness from the town, Hayden and Riley find themselves unexpectedly falling for each other as they discover the true meaning of home

GUEST POST FROM AUTHOR KATHLEEN FULLER

I’ve always loved to crochet. I learned how to crochet from my grandmother and mother when I was young but didn’t pick up the craft seriously until four years ago. Since then, I’ve made tons of crochet projects—scarfs and afghans of course, plus doilies and mandalas (my favorite), baskets, jewelry, kitchen items, socks, flowers—too many to name! My latest project is a cross body purse I made a few weeks ago.

I crocheted a rectangle using a skein of bright pink yarn and a skein of coral. Then I lined the bag with a tea towel I picked up years ago from Dollar Tree for a different craft project I never got around to making.

Then I made the closure, which is a plastic clear button with slits that I sewed the yarn through. Then I sewed on the button and made a loop.

Finally, I made the strap—or remade the strap, more accurately. I had this wallet purse, but it was too small for my phone.

I unfastened the strap, then crocheted around it. I made a loop on either side of the purse and connected the straps. That finished the purse, and I love it. It’s sturdy and holds a lot of stuff without sagging or unraveling. I plan on writing up the pattern at some point. When I do, you can get the pattern through my newsletter. You can sign up for the newsletter here.

Hooked on You: When I got the idea for writing a story featuring a yarn shop, I was, um, hooked. Knots and Tangles, Erma and Riley’s yarn store in Maple Falls, is inspired by Arkansas Yarn Co. in Malvern, AR. In a unique collaboration with Lorri Ann Helberg (yarn designer), Tamara Kelly (crochet designer) and Cheryl Ham (knitwear designer), the Riley Hat, created with Hooked on You yarn, was born.

The yarn: Hooked on You

Kits containing an autographed copy of Hooked on You, a skein of Hooked on You yarn, plus the crochet and knit patterns are now available for pre-order from Arkansas Yarn Co. I hope you enjoyed a little peek into my crochet world. Be sure to pick up Hooked on You. If you crochet or knit the Riley Hat, post it on Instagram and tag me! @kf_booksandhooks. I’d love to see your creations. :)

EXCERPT

Aftermath

Chapter One

Taylor Reid’s phone flashed as she snapped the selfie with her two friends, their heads touching and their backs to the stage. The shot from the third row, with the lead singer in the background and the three of them in the foreground, was perfect. No one would believe their seats were so close.

They turned around to face the band, dancing to the beat of the song they’d been listening to in the car on the way to Trudeau Hall.

Taylor quickly posted the pic, typing, “Ed Loran targets nonpoliticals for his rally with band Blue Fire. Worked on us!”

She put her phone on videotape and zoomed onto the stage.

“I don’t want it to end!” Desiree said in her ear.

“Me either!” Taylor yelled over the music.

“Maybe they’ll play again after his speech,” Mara shouted.

The song came to an end, and the crowd went crazy, begging for one more song before the band left the stage.

But an amplified voice filled the auditorium, cutting off the adulation. “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the next president of the United States, Ed Loran!”

The crowd sounded less enthusiastic as the band left the stage and Ed Loran, the Libertarian celebrity magnet, made his entrance. Taylor kept cheering and clapping, letting her enthusiasm for the band segue to him.

It happened just as the candidate took the stage. The deafening sound, like some confusing combination of gunshot and lightning bolt, a blast that blacked out the lights and knocked her to the ground. Smoke mushroomed. Screams crescendoed—shrieks of terror, wailing pain, shocking anguish . . . then sudden, gentle silence, as if she were underwater. A loud ringing in her ears filled the void.

She peered under the seats, choking for breath as dimmer lights flickered through the smoke. Even from here, she could see the fallout of whatever had happened. Blood pooling on the ground, people hunkering down as she was, feet running . . . What was happening? An explosion? A crash? She looked around and couldn’t see her friends.

She clawed her way up and looked over the seat. Smoke and fire billowed from the stage into the crowd, and heat wafted over her like some living force invading the room. Muffled, muted sounds competed with the ringing.

Get out! Now! She dropped back down and crawled under two rows of seats until she came to someone limp on the floor. She felt herself scream but couldn’t hear her own voice. Scrambling to her feet, she went to her left to get to the aisle, but her foot slipped on something wet. She grabbed the seat next to her to steady herself, then launched into the frantic crowd in the aisle. The room seemed to spin, people whizzing by, people under her, people above her, people broken and ripped and still . . . She stepped and fell, crawled and ran, tripped and kicked her way to the bottlenecked doorway, then fought her way through it.

The ringing in her ears faded as she tumbled downstairs, almost falling into the lobby below. The sound of crying, coughing, wretching, and the roaring sound of pounding feet turned up as if some divine finger had fiddled with the volume.

She set her sights on the glass doors to the outside and pushed forward, moving through people and past the security stations they’d stopped at on the way in. She made it to the door and burst out into the sunlight.

Fresh, cool air hit her like freedom, but at first her lungs rejected it like some poison meant to stop her. At the bottom of the steps, on the sidewalk, she bent over and coughed until she could breathe.

After a moment, the crowd pushed her along toward the parking garage until she remembered that her car wasn’t there. She had parked on the street, blocks away. She forced her way out of the flow of people and ran a block south. Where was it?

She turned the corner. Her car was here, on this block. Near the Atlanta Trust Bank. Wasn’t it? Or was it the next block?

Sweat slicked her skin until she found her silver Accord. There!

She ran to it and pulled her keys out of her pocket, wishing she hadn’t lost the key fob. Her hands trembled as she stuck the key into the passenger side lock and got the door open. She slipped inside on the driver’s side, locked it behind her. Instinctively, she slid down, her head hidden as if someone were coming after her.

What just happened?

One minute they’d been taking selfies and videotaping the band, and the next they were on the floor . . .

Where were Mara and Desiree? She hadn’t even looked for them! Should she go back for them?

No, that would be insane. She could smell the smoke and fire from here. They would know to come to the car when they got out.

Call the police!

She tried to steady her hands as she swiped her phone on.

“911, what is your—”

“An explosion!” she cut in, her voice hoarse. “At the Ed Loran rally at Trudeau Hall!”

“Where are you now?” the woman asked in a voice that was robotically calm.

“I got out. There’s fire . . . People are still in there. Please send ambulances!”

“Ma’am, did you see what exploded?”

“No . . . the stage area, I think. I don’t know where my friends are. Please . . . hurry!”

“We’ve already dispatched the fire department and police, ma’am.”

She heard sirens from a few blocks away and cut off the call. She raised up, looking over the dashboard for the flashing lights. She couldn’t see any, but the sirens grew louder.

She knelt on the floorboard, her knees on her floormat and her elbows on her seat, and texted Desiree.

I’m at the car. Where are you?

No answer. She switched to a recent thread with Mara and texted again.

Got out. At car waiting. Where are you?

Nothing.

She dictated a group text to both of them.

Are you all right?

They were probably running or deaf, fighting their way out like she had. She tried calling them, but Mara’s phone rang to voicemail. When Desiree’s phone did the same, she yelled, “Call me! I’m waiting at the car and I’m scared. Where are you?” She was sobbing when she ended the call.

Review: Making the Marquess by Nichole Van

Book four in the Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.bookdepository.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Lady Charlotte Whitaker is devoted to her family, particularly her sister’s son, Freddie. Her late father, the Marquess of Lockhead, died without a male heir. But on his deathbed, her father requested that Freddie inherit the title. Consequently, Lottie’s family has petitioned the Crown to recreate the title with Freddie as the new heir. Lottie wants nothing more than to honor her late father’s wishes. But she unwittingly reveals a wrinkle to this plan.

Dr. Alexander Whitaker is dedicated to his work as a physician in Edinburgh, Scotland. He dislikes surprises—disruptions to his daily schedule, interferences with his ability to care for his patients, and events that might alter his future. He particularly abhors things that threaten to do all three. So when a solicitor calls with news that Alex might be heir to an English marquisate, Alex wants nothing to do with the claim. But the law is the law, and a man cannot revoke his lineage, can he?

Alex does not want to be the new marquess.

Lottie is determined to honor her late father’s wishes.

Their goals should be simple enough to accomplish, right?

But when two kindred souls crash into one another, the resulting conflagration may have consequences neither can anticipate. And Lottie and Alex soon face a difficult truth—sometimes, life makes us choose between two loves, and in order to have one, we must forsake the other.

My Review

I loved the genuine friendship between Lottie and Alex! She is truly conflicted between loyalty to her immediate family and her integrity. She sees how thoughtful, considerate, and hard working Alex is, and knows he would act in the best interest of the estate and tenants, while her brother-in-law is disturbingly showing evidence of suspicious motivations. Alex has many things weighing on him, but his forced respite at the estate provides him with much needed rest and a new perspective that he struggles to accept. I really felt for both of them as they grow closer together while their circumstances seem determined to drive them apart. A wonderful addition to the series that reveals more secrets about the overarching mystery of the disappearance of Jamie and made me so excited for the next book! Read this 5 star series in order for maximum enjoyment!

Series Review: Garrison's Law Series by Mary Connealy

Garrison's Law begins. A family of alpha Texas lawmen (and women) bring their own brand of justice to law and order in Texas.

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

Trudy Jennings, is a college professor with a string of bestselling pop psychology books about answering all of life's troubles with love.

Ben Garrison is her student. He's a hardened cop who needs this class to get his degree can't keep a straight face. He tells her she's right, as long as she lives in her cushion, safe life. But for him, using her philosophy, he'll be dead by the weekend.

A stalker is coming after kindhearted Trudy and Ben is there to protect her. Trudy faces her first try challenge to turning the other cheek and feels like a failure that she can't help her confused and desperate and frightening stalker.

Ben has to keep Trudy safe until the increasingly frightening stalker can be stopped and as Ben gets to know Trudy better, he recognizes his own callus behavior at the same time he finds out everyone in

Trudy's life takes advantage of her.
She's got to get tough.
He's got to find a kinder way.

Together they have to take down a wealthy, obsessed man who knows how to play the system, because he's done all this before.

My Review

What a fun and odd matchup with these two main characters! Ben is gruff and rough around the edges, spending his days with the seedier element of society. Trudy bases her theories of passivism around the Biblical teaching of love thy neighbor, but has no real experience in life. She is being taken advantage of by some people in her life, and I loved how Ben teaches her how to stand up for herself and enforce boundaries, while she shows him that respect and kindness with his coworkers will help his chances for promotion. They drive each other crazy, but have strong chemistry, and their banter and attraction make for some entertaining reading! The stalker creates a feeling of uneasiness and the pace of the book is steady as the suspenseful vibe keeps the reader and characters on their toes.

The killer keeps coming and their only hope is to run. And as they run they try and figure out who’s hired a killer, and why, and how to stop him.

If they hide well enough and live long enough, they might make it to the day they can fall in love.

My Review

I really enjoyed this suspenseful and humorous book! I felt like Jacie and Brett connected really well, even though they both have some personal issues they are dealing with, and they brought out the best in each other. The banter is so fun and I think that's such a strength with this author. Brief parts of the story are told from the villain's perspective which I don't always like, but in this case it was used well by not giving too much away and definitely increasing the creepy factor! It's fast-paced, but also balances the character development and romance skillfully. Highly recommend to fans of clean romantic suspense!

Synopsis

Not all the Garrisons are guys.

Beth Garrison is the top hostage negotiator in Rocky Ridge, Texas. She's called to serve on a task force to investigate a killing that is a copycat of her first bust as a rookie.

Tate McCade has a reputation for steamrolling anyone who gets in his way and he's had a run-in with Beth and her oversized ego before. He's got a bruise on his face to prove it.

They have to work together and sparks are flying that aren’t all about the job.

My Review

I've been binge reading the Garrison's Law series and it's so much fun! Fast paced with plenty of action and suspense, balanced with banter, wry humor, and plenty of character growth. I was so impressed with the influence Tate and Beth had on each other- they are both tough as nails, but have a way of getting past each other's defenses and provide support during humbling circumstances. They have great chemistry with strong feelings that alternate between frustration and passion. The author hits a sweet spot between character and plot-driven narrative, and I felt fully invested in both. Highly recommended for fans of romantic suspense! Books in this series can easily be read in any order.

Synopsis

An assassin takes a shot and hits two people with one bullet.

Natalie Brewster, a deep undercover agent for a group that doesn’t officially exist, saw the gunman aiming. He definitely waited, lined up the shot, and tried to kill both of them. Nat and Case Garrison hit the ground bleeding. They both come up shooting and kill the assassin—but that just makes him mad.
Now Case and Nat, who have never before met, have to figure out what they have in common to make them prey for a killer.

And they have to do it while running for their lives because, despite the two of them being highly skilled at keeping a low profile, the killer keeps finding them. They are running at break-neck speed, hiding with all the skill of long-time undercover agents, and falling in love with a passion that might be part of what brought a killer down on them.

My Review

This book could totally be made into a movie! It has a Jason Bourne vibe where Case and Nat are both larger than life, skilled at things no normal citizen is skilled at, escaping nail-biting situations and outwitting deadly assassins at every turn. They have amazing chemistry and I really enjoyed the romantic tension between these two as they race to solve the mystery while still keeping their lives. I love how they are equally matched, and also help each other with the deeper issues that they've repressed and hidden. As much as I loved the previous three books, this one may be my favorite! The villains really took it up a notch, the humor and banter that connect Case and Nat in extraordinary circumstances, and the character development woven in with an intriguing nonstop plot gave me a can't-put-this-book-down reading experience!

Synopsis

Garrison's Law enters the Gothic Romance Genre.
Amnesia, murder, treasure and ghosts.

A woman wakes up next to a dead man with no idea how she got there, who he is.....who SHE is.
Grey Devereau drags a terrified woman out of his cousin's bed...his very dead cousin. It looks for all the world like she killed him. But then everyone who knows Victor wants to kill him eventually. Grey included.

Lanny Cole, the young woman hired to research the history of the Devereau family, can't remember a thing.

Grey steps in with an alibi and Lanny realizes that if Grey is her alibi, then she's his. She decides to trust him, but then she's suffered a head injury. So she's probably making one stupid decision after another.

And then someone else dies. And a hurricane cuts them all off from help. And then someone else dies....

And the rumors of ghosts and treasure can't be true. Sure Grey saw the ghost, in fact, he's pretty sure the ghost saved his life as a child. But he was upset at the time and he doesn't believe in ghosts.

Chills and thrills abound in an old island home built by a loathsome pirate. He's not a Garrison, but when he gets in trouble, he turns to his old friend Case Garrison for help.

Garrison's Law just got spooky.

My Review

The spooky and mysterious Gothic mood of this book contrasts with the previous ones in the series, and it felt more like a whodunit Texas version of Clue. The details aren't spelled out, but get revealed piece by piece as Lanny continues to investigate the family secrets, despite her terror and amnesia. The instalove of Grey didn't really work for me as much as his protective nature did, and I missed experiencing the development of his romantic feelings. Lanny held herself back more, even while they pretend to be a couple to maintain her alibi. There's not a wide selection of suspects, but there is still plenty of twists and turns while the trapped Devereaus work to uncover the mystery or keep it hidden.
