The Power of 1440

Title: The Power of 1440
Author: Tim Timberlake
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: March 9, 2021
Genre: Christian Life/Personal Growth

A thirty-day story-driven manual to celebrate the importance and blessing of each of the 1,440 minutes we are given every day, written by an up-and-coming lead pastor of a global church.

The son of a preacher, eighteen-year-old Tim Timberlake’s tragic and painful personal story of the sudden loss of his father began his journey toward seeing the benefit and blessing of each day. And not just to get through it, but to exhaust every opportunity of potential of that day, moment by moment, fulfilling his God-given purpose.

Today Pastor Tim inspires others to approach each day with its 1,440 minutes in a way that they live out their own God-given purposes and passions. Comprised of thirty bite-size chapters, The Power of 1440 is a day-by-day manual to help readers deal with topics like forgiveness, perspective, mistakes, rest, and living a life that matters. He says, “Win some, learn some . . . but never lose.”

Every day should be magnificent, not mundane; filled with delight, not drudgery; and a grand adventure, not a grind. It is possible to make today and every day truly remarkable.

EXCERPT

TODAY IS ALL YOU’VE GOT

Those words— Today is all you’ve got— are more than the caption on a cat poster or a slogan on a meme. It is more than an inspirational thought on a greeting card.

Trying to unlock the power of 1440 in your life without under-standing the truth of “today is all you’ve got” would be like trying to start your car without the key. It’s theoretically possible but a whole lot harder. Here’s what you need to know.

The past is gone. Totally beyond your reach or your ability to control. You can try to repair damage done in the past or relive a moment that was pleasurable— but only today.

The future is a fantasy and also completely outside your grasp. You can prepare for the tomorrow you want or take steps to avoid one you’d rather not live through today and nowhere else.

Sure, your personality is made up of your memories and your aspirations. But the part of your life you actually live, without exception, is the part happening right in front of you right now.

Imagine you are going on a trip tomorrow. You can pack your bag today, plan what you will do when you get there, buy a ticket, and book an Uber to the airport. But there is no way to get on the plane and travel across country until tomorrow. That moment has to arrive in the present before you can live it, so why bother trying? That’s what worry is about: trying to live a moment that is either long gone or hasn’t yet arrived.

Why is it so important to grasp this fact? Because your biggest enemies in the quest for a more abundant and rewarding life can seem like big, bad warlords who are seriously entrenched in these two provinces of your mind: the past and the future. Time— any time but the present—i s the part of your life occupied by all your worry, fear, doubt, anxiety, guilt, anger, boredom, and regret. Try to live there instead of today, and more often than not you’ll take a beating from thoughts that don’t serve you now.

He resists putting down roots. Fear keeps her planted in place. By opening their hearts, they could offer each other the world.

Nina Pettit left behind fame and trauma when she moved from Boston to Polaris, Utah. She changed her last name and went into hiding to enjoy a quiet life. Instead of performing on stage as a professional cellist, she now teaches music to children. When a handsome traveling private duty nurse arrives to care for Nina’s elderly neighbor, she finds herself drawn to the charming man.

Colin Moynahan’s rough boxing days are long behind him. His job as a private duty nurse allows him to travel the world. While working in Polaris, he’s introduced to Nina, and an attraction ignites. As he learns about her past, he promises to care and protect her for as long as his temporary stay in Polaris allows.

But when innocent flirtation turns to deeper feelings, the lines between them blur. Colin has resisted establishing roots while Nina’s fear keeps her firmly planted.  Picking up her pace, Nina walked up to the front door. She knocked twice, then waited. The sound of quick footsteps alerted her that Bea was not the one who would open the door, which earned the new nurse a point of favor in her mind. The less walking Bea did, the better. At least until after she healed from her hip replacement.

The front door swung open, and Nina planted a smile on her face and raised her gaze. At the sight of Colin Moynahan, she blinked. Wait. What was he doing inside Bea’s house?

“Well…hello again.” He lifted his eyebrows. “You must be the pretty neighbor Mrs. Maxwell was just telling me about.”

His grin sent electric pulses across her skin. “What are you doing here?” She stepped past him and into the living room. “Bea, where is your private nurse?”

Bea chuckled and pointed to Colin. “Sweetie, you’re looking at him.”

What a wicked bit of good fortune. Colin’s gaze swept over the woman he hadn’t stopped thinking about since yesterday at the bakery. Today, she looked more relaxed, in jeans, a baggy hoodie, and dirt-stained hiking boots.

She stopped on the entry mat, untied her boots, and slipped them off one at a time. “This man is not a nurse.” Her narrowed eyes glared at him.

Colin ignored her snippy tone, as well as the finger pointed in the direction of the door. Instead of being offended, he was amused. Colin took out his wallet and retrieved a business card, and then handed it to her. “I have a master’s degree in nursing with a specialty in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Along with some training in physical therapy. For the past eight years, I’ve worked for a company called Health Shield as a private duty nurse.”

Review: Silver Dollar Duke by Sally Britton

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.bookdepository.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

The last thing Dannie needs is a Victorian gentleman on her ranch, playing cowboy while she’s trying to save her family’s livelihood. Will high stakes and high emotions lead to heartbreak?

Evan Rounsevell, second son to the Marquess of Rothwell, is running as far from his family and responsibilities as he can. His fascination with cowboys takes him from English shores to the Arizona desert, but the days of showdowns are over, and Tombstone, Arizona, is a respectable town. With no funds left, and no desire to call on his affluent family for rescue, Evan seeks a position as a cowboy at a ranch on its last leg.

Daniella Bolton’s fiancé left when the drought of 1893 crippled the KB ranch, but that’s just fine by her. She doesn’t need a man to help her save her family’s land. Especially not an Englishman who looks down on her style of living, like Evan does. She loves her life on the ranch, and no outsider could ever understand what it means to be loyal to the land and her family’s way of life.

Being a cowboy is harder than Evan thought, but as he works to earn his place on the ranch, his heart opens up to the beauty of the desert… as well as that of Dannie Bolton. Watching Evan fight for the ranch she loves makes Dannie realize that not all men are afraid of hard work and troubled times, and loving Evan might be just the salve her wounded heart needs. But when Evan’s family summons him home right when Dannie needs him most, the feelings of betrayal from her former fiancé’s flight return tenfold.

Does Evan dare risk his tenuous relationship with Dannie to fulfill his family responsibilities? Or will leaving Arizona be the worst mistake of his life?

My Review

I enjoyed the contrast of an English nobleman in the dry ranch country of Arizona since I'm a fan of both Regency and Western genres (although this is set during Victorian times). Evan is living out his dream of exploring the Wild West since becoming obsessed with the lifestyle after meeting Buffalo Bill in England. Dannie makes a lot of assumptions about him and projects her negative feelings for charming men (or one charming man) and is not so nice to him in the beginning. I admired his patience and tenacity in his early days on the ranch, taking on the dirtiest jobs until he proved his mettle. The pace of the story is slow but steady as Evan and Dannie get to know and grow to admire one another. I'm used to more action and adventure in Westerns, but this story is definitely character driven and builds upon all the interactions and experiences of Evan and Dannie. The setting is well described and the harshness and beauty of the Arizona landscape came to life in my mind, giving me an appreciation for the people who lived there.

EXCERPT

Steps sounded ahead of [Autumn]. Twigs broke. Leaves crackled.

Autumn paused. Sherlock’s tail straightened, and his hair rose.

Her hand went to her gun, and she braced herself, preparing for the worst.

She held her breath, waiting to see what creature might emerge from the trees in the distance. Whatever it was, it sounded big. A bear? She’d seen her fair share of the beasts out here. She liked admiring them, but only from a distance.

Sherlock let out a low growl.

A moment later, someone darted from the trees. A big man with broad shoulders and short dark hair. He wore jeans, a thick vest and a knit cap.

As soon as Autumn saw his face, she knew he wasn’t trouble. Instead, he was in trouble.

Sherlock began barking at him, and the man froze. His breaths seemed shallow. Too shallow. His cheeks were flushed, and his gaze unsteady.

“Heel, boy,” she told the dog. Caution lined her voice.

Sherlock quieted and waited for her instructions, but his eyes remained on the stranger. Autumn quickly studied the man. Just looking at him, she didn’t see any visible injuries. But the look in his eyes told a different story.

“I’m Ranger Autumn Mercer,” she called. “Can I help you?”

The man continued to heave with exertion. “I’ve been trying to find help. It’s my brother. He broke his leg, and I don’t have any cell service out here. He needs help.”

Based on the desperation in his eyes, the break had been bad. The man was clearly concerned.

Autumn glanced above her at the clouds that were becoming darker and darker by the moment. She didn’t have much time to make her choice. She would radio for backup, she decided.

Then she would go and try to help the man herself.

Because if his broken leg wasn’t dangerous enough, the approaching storm was.

Before the thought had time to fully develop, gunfire rang out in the distance.

Her back muscles tightened.

It appeared a trifecta of trouble had found them. Autumn braced herself for whatever waited ahead.
