ABOUT THE BOOK

Where I Was Planted by Heather Norman Smith Title: Where I Was Planted
Author: Heather Norman Smith
Genre: Historical Fiction
Publisher: Ambassador International
Release Date
In the spring of 1961, ten-year-old Nate "Weenie" Dooley has a revelation-his father is not a good one.

Inspired by National Geographic, his favorite thing next to the Bible storybook his mother gave him before she died, Nate plans to leave his father and their home in the Smokies to set out on an adventure.

When he discovers that his father has left him first, it will take the help of a stray dog, some kind neighbors, a one-man-band, letters from a long-lost-aunt, and a new understanding of God to figure out he isn't really alone.

Will he find that Copper Creek is where he's always belonged? Or will his wanderlust keep him from ever coming back?

In her second novel, Heather Norman Smith demonstrates that love makes a family, and that while fathers may leave, our Heavenly Father is faithful, and He has a plan for all of us.

EXCERPT

“Nobody else has ever held this book before, since it was bought—besides me and Mama, I reckon’,” I said.
He kept his hands down, waiting patiently for me to be ready to hand it over.
“It’s very special, then,” he said softly.
I handed Dell the book, then sat back down at the desk, ready to hear the words I knew so well spoken aloud. He read the same story I had read a few nights before about Joseph and his brothers. The story felt so different, hearing it in someone else’s voice.
“See, Nate,” he said when he had finished. “What those brothers meant for harm, God used for good. Look where Joseph ended up! The Bible says that all things work out for good if you love God.”
I thought about all the good things that had happened since Bert left.
“Dell, what did the preacher mean this morning about decidin’?” I asked. “I decide to read my Bible book, and I decide to be good. But he was talkin’ about something else, wasn’t he?”
“It’s pretty simple, really. Some people know about God in their head, but they choose not to give Him their heart. It’s a choice everybody has to make.”
Dell taught me a lot of things—things I had never had a chance to hear before. He explained to me how all the stories in my book fit together like pieces of a puzzle. He explained God’s big plan to make things right after Adam and Eve messed up from the beginning and how it was just as simple as choosing to believe it. That night, I made my choice, and I rested with a peaceful feeling way down on the inside, even though I knew it might be the last night I would sleep in my own bed.

Excerpt

Wishes weren’t for the serious and dedicated. Wishes weren’t for the experienced and informed like Theo. Wishes never garnered results. Still, he stared at Josie’s hand on his arm and found himself wishing. “Have you ever taken Mimi’s advice about collecting moments?”

“I have.” Josie accepted the bouquet from one of Baylee’s assistants. “Though not nearly enough.”

“Let’s do that now.” Theo waved good-bye to the floral staff and his common sense.

“What?”

“Listen to Mimi.” Theo held open the door for Josie. “Do something we consider a moment. Something we could collect to look back on.”

“I have work to finish.” Her voice dipped as if she’d spilled her certainty like a dropped ice-cream cone.

“As do I.” More work than one person should handle. Maybe he’d inhaled too much pollen inside Baylee’s place. Whatever it was, nothing interested him more than spending a little more time with Josie. “We’ll take an hour. Then it’s back to work and reality.” Back to results. Back to focus on the things that mattered. Back to no more wishing.

She grinned at him. “What do you have in mind?”

“We visited the gingerbread-house display.” Theo ran his hand through his hair. Impromptu had never blended well into his life. He was a planner. A scheduler. “What about another Christmas field trip?”

“There’s the tree in the square.” Her smile grew in degrees, spreading up into her gaze.

“I’ve walked by that tree and ice rink countless times on my way to meetings.” Unsure that was the moment he wanted.

“But have you seen it lit up. At night.” Josie pointed at his phone, which he clutched in his hand. “While not on a conference call.”

“Good point.” Theo tucked his phone into his pocket. “Taxi or walk?”

Josie adjusted her grip on the bouquet and indicated her boots. “Walk if you’re up for it.”

Theo held out his arm to Josie. “Let’s go visit a Christmas tree.”

Book Tour & Review: The Piper's Pursuit by Melanie Dickerson #PipPurPrism

(Hagenheim #10)
By Melanie Dickerson
YA Fairy Tale Retelling, Christian, Historical
Hardcover, Audiobook & ebook, 320 Pages
December 3rd 2019 by Thomas Nelson

A fairy-tale journey of intrigue and romance that reimagines the classic Pied Piper story.

A plague of rats. A giant beast outside the village walls. A host of missing children. And one young woman determined to save her people.

In 1424 Hamlin, Katerina faces threats from all sides. An outbreak of rats has overtaken the village, a mysterious beast is on a killing rampage of the village’s children, and Katerina’s evil stepfather is a dark presence inside the walls of her own home. Katerina is determined to hunt and kill the Beast of Hamlin herself before more lives are lost.

When Steffan, the handsome but brash duke’s son, comes to town seeking glory and reward, Katerina decides he might be the ally she’s been looking for—even though the only gentle thing about him seems to be the sweet music he plays on his pipe. But there’s more to Steffan than she suspects, and she finds herself drawn to him despite her misgivings.

Together Katerina and Steffan must stop the enemy from stealing the children of Hamlin. But their interference might create an even worse fate for the entire village.

Praise for The Piper’s Pursuit

The Piper’s Pursuit is a lovely tale of adventure, romance, and redemption. Kat and Steffan’s righteous quest will have you rooting them on until the very satisfying end!” —LORIE LANGDON, author of Olivia Twist and the DOON series

My Review

I really enjoyed seeing Steffan's path to redemption and getting to know Katerina- these characters really came to life as they worked together to solve the mystery of the beast and the disappearing townspeople and children. Katerina is complex, with major trust issues and a defensive exterior, while inside she is full of compassion for those being abused and willing to fight for them. We see Steffan's rebellious nature in The Warrior Maiden, but in this book we begin to understand where his head was and why he made the choices he did. I liked him much better as he seeks to become a better man and realizes the folly of his past. There is plenty of suspense and action, and the romantic tension slowly grows as Steffan proves himself worthy of Katerina's trust. I wish I could have envisioned the setting better, and would have loved more description of the town especially. Overall, an exciting and satisfying escape into this creative retelling of The Pied Piper.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
