Review: Five Golden Wishes by Cari Lynn Webb

Heidi Reads... Five Golden Wishes by Cari Lynn Webb

My rating: 3 stars / I liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Dylan King never intended to get involved with Christmas Town. He'd arranged his business trip to include a short visit with his Aunt Odette. But now he's fixing furniture for Over the River Retirement Home residents, welding a fence for the carousel and extending his stay every other day. If he stopped making up excuses to spend more time with Sadie Kent, he could finally get back to business like he wanted.

Sadie Kent has fallen to a new low. Not only has she ditched Santa School (a birthday gift from her young daughters to regain her Christmas spirit after her holiday divorce last year), Sadie has seriously embellished her culinary skills. Between keeping her volunteer commitments and trying to find a job that won’t interfere with her daughters’ school schedules, baking and decorating Christmas cookies to help raise money for the carousel refurbishment might be one step too far. If Dylan King stopped offering suggestions and distracting her, and reigniting her holiday spirit, Sadie could prove she had everything under control.

Welcome back to Christmas Town where wishes in the heart, no matter how deep they're buried, find a voice. And the power of family and love endures.

My Review

I've read a couple other books in the Christmas Town series, and was happy to revisit the community that really knows how to get into the season! This is a sweet story between two people who have their hands full, but despite their lack of time for romance, are pushed together by three well-meaning busybodies. There is plenty of humor, especially involving Aunt Odette and her friends who have their finger on the pulse of Christmas Town. I felt like the chemistry and romance was a bit lacking- there was more telling than showing- and because their relationship was so platonic for 2/3 of the book, I didn't really feel it when things finally got moving in that department. Overall it was a pleasant story and nice addition to the series.

(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

Launch - Note from the Author

Welcome to my blog tour with Prism!

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my new book, Ava’s Prize, in my City by the Bay Stories with Harlequin Heartwarming. Ava’s Prize is a sweet contemporary romance that brings together, paramedic, Ava Andrews and inventor, Kyle Quinn...

I Am A Reader - Guest Post

Family Game Night

In my new release, Ava’s Prize-a Harlequin Heartwarming sweet romance-my heroine, Ava Andrews plays a game called: You Know What We Need with her family and friends...

Kyle opened the door to the suite and welcomed his guests inside. He would’ve explained his plans to work that afternoon if Ben hadn’t disrupted the silence with a drawn-out whoa.

Kyle shut the door and turned around to find the young boy bouncing from one foot to the other, his gaze darting around the suite. Ben never moved from his father’s side, as if he waited for a referee to blow a start whistle to let the games begin.

Remembrancy - Review

"Cari Lynn Webb quickly threw off my misgivings and invested me in her story (in large part due to said friends). . . . Webb gives readers a taste of the lonely high life with Kyle’s home, workspace, endless invitations, and press scrutiny. That’s juxtaposed against Ava’s simple life in which she’s working more than forty hours a week to make ends meet but she’s surrounded by friends and family she loves and who love her in return. The addition of the contest and the inventions are just icing on this story cake."

Wishful Endings - Guest Post

Work Spaces and Offices that Inspire

In my new release, Ava’s Prize, a sweet contemporary romance from Harlequin Heartwarming, my hero, Kyle Quinn has a second-floor suite that doubles as both his living and work space in San Francisco...

Heidi Reads... - Excerpt

But Ava was here. Dressed in a bold bottle-green dress and looking like the model she never claimed to be. Kyle wanted to be near her again. That should’ve made him run in the other direction. Instead, he moved through the crowd, offered a chin dip acknowledgment to different guests, yet never lost sight of Ava.

Finally, he stood within touching distance. And hesitated like he’d stepped back into middle school and watched the party invites flash across cell phones in the hallway. He’d always held his breath, waiting for his phone to vibrate with a new text alert. The invites had never arrived. He’d long since stopped hoping.

"Ava’s Prize is a solid story with electric romantic chemistry and several sweet moments. Both Kyle and Ava experience steady character growth over the course of the novel, and readers will experience a wide range of emotions as they follow the plot. The fact that several characters have specific medical needs not usually seen in contemporary romance adds another dimension to this already layered story and keeps readers invested in the characters."

Colorimetry - Guest Post

San Francisco and First Kisses

Ava’s Prize, my new sweet contemporary romance from Harlequin Heartwarming, is set in San Francisco. One of the most iconic images from San Francisco is the cable car. Fortunately, a cable car ride led to the first kiss between my hero, Kyle Quinn and my heroine, Ava Andrews.

"This is a fabulous romance. I like the way two people who are determined to live their lives alone find something so different in their futures. . . . I highly recommend this book to others who like a good romance and fun friendships."

Among the Reads - Interview

Other than the ability to create your own happily-ever-after endings, what is your favorite thing about being an author?

[Cari] Other than getting to work out of my house and spending most days in my comfy clothes (aka pajamas) and pony tails, I like the writing friends I have made that have become best friends and my writing tribe. There is a very strong writing community in romance and I can’t say enough about the support I’ve found among other authors. I also really like meeting readers – it is so much fun to meet people who share the same passion about books as I do.

Book by Book - Review

"...the story unfolds in a way that challenges them to grow and change, and it is oh so enjoyable.

So, if you’re a reader of contemporary romance, check out Ava’s Prize. It’s a heartwarming, delightful read that does not disappoint."

E-Romance News - Excerpt

Ava changed directions midstep and veered toward the buffet. She strolled along the table, stopping as if considering her options. One glance over her shoulder confirmed her bathroom reporter still watched her. Ava grabbed a plate and piled food on it, in no particular order. Stacking the crackers on top of the cheese, she balanced fruit on top of the crackers. Adding a strawberry for color, she studied the plate. If she added another layer, would it collapse like she worried her own world might? Perhaps being a risk-taker wasn’t her thing after all.

Reading On The Edge - Guest Post

You bought what?

Kyle Quinn, my hero in my new release, Ava’s Prize-a sweet contemporary romance from Harlequin Heartwarming-is an inventor. Kyle invented a medical earbud that sold for a rather large profit and became a popular commercial product on the market.

Harlie's Books - Review

"The romance in the book is fabulous. Talk about two people that didn’t want to fall in love but did. And then fought it every step of the way. It’s plausible, relatable and sweet."

Senior Pets Need Love Too

In my new release, Ava’s Prize-a sweet contemporary romance from Harlequin Heartwarming-my heroine, Ava Andrews fosters senior cats and dogs thanks to her good friend, Sophie Callahan. Sophie owns The Pampered Pooch, a pet store in the city and takes in rescues quite often. (The Charm Offensive, Book 1, City by the Bay Stories). Ava fosters the senior pets as often as she can, preferring to spread her love around to the older animals until Sophie finds the dogs and cats their forever homes.

Outside the conference room door, Kyle stopped Ava with a hand on her arm. “By the way, I’m flattered.”

One side of his mouth tipped up, drawing Ava’s gaze. “Flattered?”

“That you’re trying to win me, too.” His voice was quiet and tempting.

Ava jerked her gaze away from his mouth. “I’m not…”

Kyle touched her chin with his knuckles, closing her mouth and stopping her protest. “But there can’t be anything more between us than this.”

"I enjoyed reading this storyline, as it was different than most other romances out there. I also enjoy characters who are deeper with more complexities that they have to work through. It allows for measurable growth, which you want to find in a good book. And I like those romances where an unlikely friendship and romance can blossom from what seems to be an improbable place."

"I enjoyed the witty commentary of this book. Ava and Kyle are great. . . . This book has it's highs and lows that can be hard to connect with but the highs definitely out weigh the lows."

He’d always held his breath, waiting for his phone to vibrate with a new text alert. The invites had never arrived. He’d long since stopped hoping.

Stopped holding his breath.

Until now. With Ava. His breath stilled. That deceitful hope flared. Had she come to see him?

Ava stepped forward, embraced him without hesitation. The hug was too quick. Too impersonal. He wanted to reach for her again. Pull her against him and hold on, for longer than appropriate, until all those tense places inside him calmed. Until he tackled that awkward boy from his past and wrestled every old insecurity back into place. Until the hope faded.

Ava motioned to an older auburn-haired woman in a wheelchair with a bright multicolored shawl draped around her thin shoulders. “Kyle, this is my mother, Karen.”

Kyle jolted, yet managed to keep his expression contained, his smile in place. Her mother? He hadn’t expected family introductions. Friends met families. Boyfriends met parents.

Ava and he weren’t...anything. But could they be? That urge to take Ava into his arms lowered to a simmer and refused to fade.

He ignored those useless thoughts. His schoolboy days of crushes and old wishes were in the past. Forgotten underneath his master’s degree and practical business pursuits. He took Karen’s hand, kept his grip steady and gentle. “Pleasure to meet you.”

“I haven’t been this nervous since Ava deployed for her last time.” Karen held on to Kyle’s hand. “I hope they make the announcement for the finalists soon.”

Ava touched her ear, and then her bracelet. Her hands fluttered around her, but never stilled. Only her smile settled on Kyle. “Can’t deny my own nerves, either. Or that I’m still in shock about getting the call from your contest people.”

His people? That hope splintered. He’d known better than to trust it anyway. Ava wasn’t here for him, but for the contest.

Excerpt

“Good Morning, Grace.”
Grace gaped and slowed on the porch steps of Brewster’s. The other half of her child’s DNA sat across from Pops. Ethan in his worn boots, faded flannel shirt and baseball cap smiled at her, stirring warmth through her. He returned his attention to the chessboard as if he’d been playing with her grandfather for years. As if this was their morning routine. As if he belonged here on this porch, waiting for her.
Waiting for her to confess.
Grace’s hand drifted to her stomach, her slight bump concealed beneath her jacket. Why did the truth have to be so complicated?
Still she couldn’t quite stall that swirl of warmth inside her from seeing Ethan.
She should be hot from irritation. She should be annoyed with Ethan for intruding on her usual morning routine. She always shared coffee and stories with her grandfather before the store opened. Before the other employees arrived. Before the customers took over the day.
Except this morning, they were a trio, rather than a duo. What was it with people inserting themselves where they didn’t belong? First, there was Sarah Ashley trying to step into the family business for the first time ever, and now, Ethan.
Was it so wrong that Grace wanted one thing to remain the same? To remain normal? In six months, nothing about her life would be either. But she could at least have her usual mornings with Pops, couldn’t she? Surely that wasn’t too much to ask.
“Sit down, Gracie.” Pops pointed at the empty rocking chair beside Ethan. The same one she sat in every morning while she listened to Pops reminisce about her grandmother or his childhood. “Your Ethan here, he already took care of your morning chores for you.” He eyed Ethan over the rims of his glasses and grinned. “Can’t ever get this girl to sit. But I got her good this morning, thanks to you.”
“I can make more coffee.” Ethan’s hand was on a stack of file folders. He glanced at her, and his guarded tone suggested he thought she needed several cups to tackle the Blackwell books.
“I’ve been making the effort to switch to tea.” Grace reached inside her purse for her special ginger tea. She was going to need to steep more than one bag this morning. Sitting next to Ethan was unsettling. She cleared her throat to smooth the accusation out of her voice and looked at him. “You’re up early.”
“Trying to get some errands done before Katie notices I’ve left.” Ethan placed a hand on his white knight and started to move the piece, but then paused to consider the chessboard as if everything hinged on this one particular move.
Whereas for Grace, everything hinged on her baby and keeping her stomach from objecting to the morning’s excitement. Would Ethan expect her to say checkmate when she told him about the baby? As if she’d neatly trapped him into being a dad. And what about marriage? She didn’t want Ethan to offer to marry her because she was carrying his child. But would he believe her?
“Keeping ahead of Katie Montgomery is almost as impossible as staying a step ahead of our Gracie.” Pops stuck his elbows out and leaned on his knees, as if anticipating Ethan’s move. As if Ethan proved a challenge to her grandfather. Ethan shifted his knight, taking Pops’s bishop. Pops rubbed his chin. “Sometimes you get lucky.”
Maybe Grace would get lucky and Ethan would confess he’d always wanted to be a father and couldn’t think of another person he wanted to have a child with other than Grace. The tea bag crinkled in her fist. What a ridiculous thought.
Only fools relied on luck.

Welcome to my blog tour with Prism!

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my new book, The Doctor’s Recovery, in my City By The Bay Series with Harlequin Heartwarming. The Doctor’s Recovery is a sweet contemporary romance that brings together daredevil documentary filmmaker, Mia Fiore and ER doctor, Wyatt Reid. Two years ago, Wyatt and Mia shared an unforgettable goodbye kiss. Now a scuba diving accident has brought Mia into Wyatt’s San Francisco ER. Now Wyatt and Mia have second chance at a real relationship, but only if they can open themselves up to love and discover that they just might be stronger and better together.

Happy Reading!

Heidi Reads... - Adrenaline Rush or Adrenaline Pause

My heroine in my May release, The Doctor’s Recovery is a documentary film-maker. Mia Fiore, a thrill seeker and risk-taker has traveled the world for her films. Still there are many adventures to be found right here in the US. Here are five of Mia’s top adventures for thrill-seekers like her. And for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground and their adventures with a little less adrenaline like myself, each location has an alternative experience that offers its own unforgettable memories...

Harlequin Junkie - Spotlight & Exclusive Giveaway

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

The working title of this book was Broken Vows, Mended Hearts. I’m not the best at titles (you can ask my daughters who cringe when I list my title ideas). So I’m very thankful for my editor who comes up with terrific final titles.

While I was researching this book, I watched quite a few videos of underwater dives and scuba diving accidents. Several of those scuba diving accidents made me seasick and I was sitting at my desk, watching the video on my computer. I’m not sure scuba diving will be in my future.

In The Doctor’s Recovery, there is a scene where the characters make a bet over a chess game challenge. The losers have to eat strange and weird food that the winners pick like moldy cheese jelly beans and beet ice cream. I discovered avocado ice cream during my research into strange food combinations and it’s become one of my favorites. I should probably mention I’ve been on an avocado binge recently and can’t seem to get enough no matter how it is prepared.

“But I have an actual job.” She clutched Dr. Hensen’s arm, holding him in place. The startled look behind his round glasses hinted at his retreat back inside his mental textbook. Mia continued, “And an important deadline to meet.”

A brisk knock and sure footsteps preceded the order from a familiar voice. “Right now, your only job is to heal.”

Dr. Hensen tugged his arm free and darted toward Wyatt Reid. Relief coated Dr. Hensen’s voice and slid into his extended handshake with Wyatt. “Nice to see that they let you out of the ER, Dr. Reid. We could certainly benefit from your skills up here.” He pushed on his glasses and glanced at Mia. “I agree with my colleague, Mia. You need to concentrate on your recovery. Don’t fight the process. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

"An emotional journey towards forgiveness, redemption and happily ever afters! . . .The characters are intriguing and keep us wanting to know more. The story line is a bit distracting, yet satisfying in it’s own way. Overall, a heart tugging story with a twist that is very enjoyable!"

Colorimetry - Beyond the Hospital

In my May release, The Doctor’s Recovery, my hero, Wyatt Reid, is an ER physician. For the past five years, Wyatt has been doing medical-aide work in the Africa. During my research for The Doctor’s Recovery, I discovered several unique jobs for physicians and medical professionals that were outside of the hospital and clinic environment...

"The Doctor’s Recovery by Cari Lynn Webb is my kind of story – rich in character depth and relationship drama – and I enjoyed it very much. There’s a complexity to lead characters Mia and Wyatt, much of it drawing from past events in their lives. San Francisco’s Bay area provides a vivid backdrop for the story, and there’s a great supporting cast as well."

"A great cast of intriguing secondary characters provides delightful support (and lighter moments) to the two multilayered protagonists and their relationship. Both Wyatt and Mia are easy to like and easy to cheer for, and Wyatt is swoonily romantic when it counts. I love how the title factors into the book and the subtle ways that it takes on meaning throughout. A heart-tugging and inspiring read!"

Wishful Endings - Inspiration for The Doctor's Recovery

My mother is a retired RN. She worked full-time through her first three pregnancies. When I came along (the last of four and the only girl), she stopped working. My father traveled frequently for his job and raising four children required full time hours from my mom. When I was in seventh grade, my mom decided to go back to nursing. A few weeks into her return to work, she came home and told me that she was considering quitting. She’d been out of the medical field for a while and the learning curve had increased over those years...

Wyatt leaned toward the bed and held Mia’s good hand between both of his. The contact satisfied nothing. He wanted a reaction. He wanted her to wake up, squeeze his fingers and reassure him that she really was alive. How pathetic had he become?

Mia Fiore needed a keeper. She needed someone to watch out for her and keep her from putting her life at risk again. She needed someone to show her that she was worth more alive than dead. She needed someone to love her beyond all reason.

Fortunately, that someone wasn’t Wyatt.

Mia studied the Craftsman bungalow with the front porch that begged for a swing. Tree branches draped over the fence in front of the truck as if reaching out to greet newcomers. She’d never considered settling into a house, but imagined a lovely home like Helen’s would be perfect. Even from the truck, something special surrounded the house as if the ground carried Mother Nature’s blessing. “You grew up here?” She heard both the awe and jealousy in her voice.

“Built a tree fort in the backyard and played hide-and-seek in the street.” Wyatt leaned across her and opened her door.

Mia imagined the boy inside the man racing through the neighborhood and acting like a pirate in the tree house. A child’s dream. Couches covered in sheets and lampshades wrapped in plastic anchored her childhood, making mud pies and collecting fireflies had been prohibited. Her childhood home looked as if it waited, suspended in time, dust-free under the protective coverings, until a new family moved in to give it life again. Stepping onto the porch, she understood why Helen refused to leave. She’d refuse to leave as well if she called this place home. “How’d you ever leave?”

"This book is so sweet, delightful, heartwarming and, at times, emotional. I thought it was pretty good. Mia and Wyatt were great, relateable characters, with perfect chemistry. I could not wait to find out what would happen next and wound up reading the whole book in one sitting."

What about you?” She leaned against him as they strolled back to the house.

“I’ll clean up the last bit from the dessert round and then sleep,” he said.

“I can help,” she offered.

“I’m not asking.” He guided her up the stairs into the house and motioned toward the bedrooms. “Good night, Mia.”

She turned around, held the palm he’d kissed up to her lips and smiled. “Sweet dreams, Doc.”

And then Wyatt knew. Knew that if he dared believe in the magic between them, his heart would never be the same. His life would never be the same.

"I really liked Helen, Wyatt's mom. She's brought many a smile to my face.

The romance seemed really sudden, but it was still sweet and satisfying.

Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable read and I'll definitely be on the lookout for more by this author."

I Am A ReaderFour-legged Visitors Only, Please

I’m an animal lover – I can’t walk into a pet shelter or pet store without wanting to bring home every dog and cat waiting for their forever home. If only I had the land and resources to adopt each one. In the meantime, I’ll keep volunteering at the rescue shelter and praying that every animal in need of a home finds one soon...

"These main characters…oh my! They were too similar for their own good. At first it might have seemed that they were opposites, however they both struggled with misplaced guilt and both were extremely stubborn!

...This story had lots and lots of great side characters in it and I enjoyed getting to know about all of them too. I enjoyed this contemporary romance."

A thick black curtain concealed Wyatt in the back of the private dining room in the Rustic Grill. His position was ideal for the guests’ arrival, offering a full view of guests without revealing himself. Laughter blended with varied conversations as the main doors to the dining room slid open. He skipped over Ava’s big smile and Eddy’s curls and his mother’s soft grin, searching the group spilling inside.

Finally, his gaze caught the one dark-haired, amber-eyed woman who had stamped herself in permanent ink on his heart. He snapped a picture in his mind of her in that moment: her eyes wide and brilliant, her skin glowing as if she’d been lit from within, her teal dress accentuating everything her favorite scrubs hid. He wanted to wrap her up in his embrace and steal her away right then, but he waited, held still in the shadowed corner.

"Emotions do not begin to describe the Doctor's Recovery. . . . You will not be let down by picking up this heartwarming read. "
