Book Tour & Review: A Winter by the Sea by Julie Klassen

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

Royalty comes to Sidmouth, bringing unexpected danger and the sweet possibility of romance . . .

When the Duke and Duchess of Kent and their daughter--the future Queen Victoria--rent neighboring Woolbrook Cottage for the winter, the Summers sisters are called upon to host three of the royal family's male staff in their seaside house. But they soon realize they've invited secrets and intrigue into their home.

Meanwhile, Emily Summers longs to become an author. A local publisher offers to consider her novel if she will first write a Sidmouth guidebook for him. Emily agrees and begins researching the area with help from the Duke of Kent's handsome private secretary. But a surprise visitor from her past shows up at Sea View, leaving Emily torn between the desires she's long held dear and her budding dreams for the future.

Return to the Devonshire coast with the Summers sisters, where loyalties are tested, secrets come to light, and new love emerges.

My Review

A lovely, meandering story focused on Emily's three loves- two different men and her writing. One suitor she long pined for abandoned her in her family's time of need, only to reappear with renewed hopes. Her new friend lodging at the inn provides a level of support and encouragement of her own dreams that she's never experienced before, but of course there are obstacles to the relationship. Her writing brings her new opportunities as she reaches outside her comfort zone, yet her family is there as her foundation of strength. I enjoyed seeing her character growth, becoming less self-centered as she follows her sisters' examples of selfless service and compassion. We also read in the perspective of older sister Sarah, who has another potential relationship developing, but her main focus is on the inn and her family. Having royals visiting the small community brought a level of excitement and drama, interesting characters, and elements of real history. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

Excerpt

Moving at a more leisurely pace, Jillian approached Gabriel. “What are you working on?”

“Clearing one side of my garage—which pretty much serves as a catchall anyway since neither of my trucks will fit—in case you need space to store some stuff.”

Her vision blurred as tears filled her eyes, spilling onto her cheeks. She quickly turned around, not wanting him to see her. But it was too late.

“Hey, what’s going on?” He was in front of her, his palms cupping her elbows.

“Nothing,” she sobbed, feeling absolutely mortified. “Just stupid pregnancy hormones making me melt down over a random act of kindness.” She swiped at her cheeks. “Ugh. This is so embarrassing.” She sniffed, finally meeting his gaze. “Thank you. That was very sweet of you. Not to mention unexpected.”

“Well, with you getting bigger every day, you’ll need space to move around the house.”

“Wait. Did you just say I was big?”

His expression was priceless. “Uh, no. I probably should’ve phrased that differently. The baby is getting bigger every day. And you’re smiling again.”

“I am.” A chuckle bubbled from her. “Thanks. Now I need to change clothes and see about making some space in the house.”

“Oh, no you don’t.” He picked up the ball Aggie had dropped at his feet. “You can formulate a plan, but I’m in charge of execution. No heavy lifting for you.”

“Yes, sir.”

He tossed the ball as she started toward the house. “I’ll stay out here and entertain the Aggster for a while. Don’t forget to take the ground beef out of the freezer. Rest of the stuff’s at my place.” He poked a thumb over his shoulder as Aggie trotted toward him with a ball in her mouth. “May as well leave it there until we need it.”

Pausing on the porch, she glanced back at Gabriel. How many times had she dreamed of him since her assault? Of being held in his strong arms again and him feeling the same way about her as he once had. Picking up where they left off, only with her living in Hope Crossing.

But that was nothing more than a pipe dream. Everything he’d done for her since she’d arrived—going out of his way to make her feel safe, helping her out around the house—that was Gabriel’s modus operandi. When he saw a need, he went to any length to meet it. Meaning she couldn’t allow herself to read anything more into his actions. No matter how much she might want to.

Marek frowned. “What do you propose?”

She sighed. Raised her chin. “I would like you to go to the southern border. Fell trees, pile brush. Set fires if you have to. Delay them as long as possible.”

He shook his head. “I can’t do that. From the beginning, I’ve had one task on this mission—to keep you safe. I can’t do that from miles away. Don’t ask me to leave you now.”

She gazed steadily at him. “I have to. This is not just about me. It never was.”

Excerpt

The letter wasn’t meant for him. But wasn’t it possible that, on a larger, cosmic scale, it was? Somehow it had fallen into his hands. The thought of the woman, whoever she was, going to the post office and sliding a key into the hole, only to be disappointed by the sight of the empty metal box, crushed him. Even so, it wasn’t his path that had crossed with hers, however briefly. Responding to the letter would require assuming the identity of his dead partner, his friend.

Which meant he’d be keeping Johnny’s memory alive. A tribute, of sorts.

Tane pursed his lips. The mental fencing match felt a lot like an attempt on his part to justify the unjustifiable.

Still, the picture the woman had drawn, of light shining through a window on a dark night, seeped deep into his bones.

What harm could it do? She’d never know it wasn’t Johnny who’d written her back. Tane could send a letter or two, let her know what her words had meant to him and wish her well, as she had done his partner. After that, their correspondence would end, and they could get on with their lives. While it lasted, though, they might both be able to draw comfort from it, a small amount of warmth in the midst of a cold, cold world.

It had been six years since Marit had lived in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht, and yet she couldn’t deny the feeling of homecoming that washed over her as she led Lars down the cobbled street toward her parents’ home. She loved Amsterdam and was grateful for the opportunity her career had given her to travel to numerous fascinating and exotic locations, but nothing quite compared with spending Christmas in Maastricht. And to be here with Lars made it all the more special.

She looked over at him now. Despite the bitter-cold wind, he was walking slowly, his attention on the meticulously maintained nineteenth-century homes lining their path. The redbrick buildings stood pressed together in a long row of tall, narrow houses. Their white window frames and doorframes unified them even as their colorful curtains and doors set them apart.

“You’re itching to stop and take photos, aren’t you?” she teased.

His gaze dropped from the roofline of the nearest house to Marit’s face, and he grinned. “It’s that obvious, huh?”

Marit laughed. A professional photographer for Royal Coster Diamonds, Lars was rarely without his camera.

Excerpt

When the clock chimed five, May put away her paints and brushes as the Camera Girls filed back in one by one. There was a great deal of chattering about the day and all that had taken place.

“Tomorrow is Japan Day,” Mary told May as she took off the camera from around her neck.

“I know. I’m very excited to see what all they do.” May continued cleaning her station.

“I heard there would be a parade from the Japanese vil- lage to the Japan building,” Mary added. “It’s first thing in the morning.”

May smiled. “I have the day off and intend to watch it all and listen to the speakers and hear the Japanese musicians. I am quite excited.”

Mary nodded and returned May’s smile. “I hope you enjoy yourself. If I were off, I would join you, but I’ll probably be too busy photographing people. Maybe I can come find you at lunch.”

“One of the restaurants is going to serve authentic Japa- nese food. I want to try it all,” May said with a laugh.

Her mother never allowed Japanese food to be served in the house. on more than one occasion May had snuck down- town to the Japanese area of Seattle—Japantown. Bordered by Yesler Way and Dearborn on the north and south ends, and Fourth and Fourteenth Avenues on the east and west, Japantown offered May a glimpse into a world she had only dreamed about. It was here she had sampled a few classic dishes, but she’d never told her mother. She knew the older woman would have been very upset to know that May was even interested in such things.

But she was.

She longed to know about her Japanese ancestors and the culture of Japan. She had tried so many times to get her mother to open up and talk about it, but it almost al- ways resulted in either tears or silence. Japan, her father had once told her, had been most hurtful to her mother, and she left many bad feelings there when she got on the boat for America.

When May had first heard of the expo and its plans for promoting Japan and other Pacific Islands, she knew she wanted to somehow be a part of it. Upon visiting, she’d seen the advertisement at Fisher Photography for Camera Girls. When she went in to speak to the owner about the job, somehow the conversation had turned to May being an artist. One thing led to another, and Mr. Fisher asked if she thought she could touch up the photographs with color. May was confident she could, and so she was hired. It turned out to be the perfect job for her, although she was also trained on the Brownie.
