Somehow the villagers smothered the fire licking the dry grasses, and Papa eased my hands, legs, body off the branch, tucking me in his arms. His heart beat slow and steady against my cheek, not quite drowning out the whispers of the villagers.

Over Papa’s shoulder, I watched a group dragging the dead tiger down the mountain. They would skin it and give me the pelt—a reminder of conquering the beast. Of defeating the king of the jungle—a tiger.

Papa sat me in front of our home’s chief fire pit, a blanket over my shoulders. Mama set a bowl of water in front of me and wiped away the tiny streams of blood covering my body. I stared at my reflection in the bowl, my teardrops battering the water’s surface. Everyone knew the only animal who could face a tiger and survive was another tiger.

I touched the surface of the water, shattering my image.

Mama had promised there was no truth in the legend of the sharaw. But I’d stood against the tiger and won.

Perhaps the jaiwa had been right. I shivered under the heavy blanket.

“You are safe, little tiger,” Mama whispered into my hair. “There is no great darkness in you or this world.”

I laid my ear against Mama’s giant belly, her dark hair tangling in my own. Her stomach tightened, and Mama groaned, bending against the obvious pain.

It had been the first and last time Mama was wrong.

Real Historical Inspiration by Karen Baney

I love including real historical facts in my novels. I am often inspired by great sources used for the research behind my stories. The same is true for the Desert Manna Series. Here are a few highlights of how my research helped shape the series.

Freighting

The history behind freighting and each of Perry and Dixon’s trips (Beauty for Ashes) was inspired by the recollections from Thomas Sanders, a real-life Prescott pioneer, who documented his time in Arizona from the 1860s to 1880s in a book called My Arizona Adventures. I borrowed some trips and anecdotes from his colorful stories, including:

• A 24-member military band joining the freight wagons.
• The flooding of the Salt River stranded their party on two different shores of the river.
• Contracting with the military to deliver supplies (and the leader’s ineptitude).
• And so much more!

Indian Wars

Part of my research involves general reading about the era (1871 – 1873). When I learned there were two major “Indian Wars” involving General Crook in Arizona, I read General Crook and the Western Frontier by Charles M. Robinson III. This book provided the inspiration for all the scenes that mention Crook or his wife in Beauty for Ashes and Joy for Mourning. It led me to deeper research about Camp Date Creek, where I learned about the extreme poverty forced upon the Indians by corrupt Indian Agents.

Women’s Aid Society

My husband and I love to travel throughout Arizona, visiting many museums. On one trip, I bought a picture guide of historical Prescott. One picture in the book depicted the members of a women’s “aid society,” which described their purpose as leaders in charitable works for the community. This sparked the idea of Grace Talbert leading the organization in Joy for Mourning.

Women Attorneys

In Oaks of Justice, I mention that Mel (Melissa) Larson could not practice law. This is historically accurate. I did a deep dive into the definitions of attorneys and those who were allowed to take the bar. In the 1870s in territorial Arizona, women could take part in court proceedings under the guidance of a licensed attorney (male). It wasn’t until 1892 that women were admitted to the bar and allowed to become licensed. I enjoyed incorporating this into the novel.

Life of Indians in Territorial Arizona

When I first wrote the Desert Manna Series, I intended to include a Native American character named Kowara. I wrote several scenes with him as an antagonist in Beauty for Ashes, which I later removed in favor of focusing more on Perry and Rebecca’s characters.

Much of my research happened before that decision. I had the privilege of learning more about the Yavapai’s sub-tribes through two amazing sources.

I’m currently working on Spirit of Despair: A Desert Manna Novella, which tells Kowara’s story and explains why he targeted Perry Quinn.

About the Author

After returning to the United States, Derban’s life remained filled with a love of the theatre, and a passion for British murder mysteries.

He kept his arm behind her back and lifted her to her feet. Then without another thought, he pulled her into an embrace, cradling her against his chest.

He couldn’t help it. She could’ve died.

So that’s what he said as he caressed her silky hair with his thumb. “I thought you might be dead.”

She leaned her head back and brought her gaze up to his. Something shimmered in her emerald eyes. Tears? Was she hurt?

“I’m sorry.” He loosened his hold around her, lowering his hands to gently brush down her arms. “Are you injured?”

She shook her head, watching him with what looked like wonder. Maybe her head injury had left her a little confused.

His hand went to her face, cupping her cheek as his thumb neared one of the red marks. “Your face is scratched. Are you sure you aren’t hurt anywhere else?”

“Pretty sure.” Her gaze didn’t leave his.

RUN YOUR OWN RACE

Thank you for inviting me to your blog. I love sharing with fellow writers and readers.

A favourite scripture of mine is the one from Hebrews 12:1-3. I want to put a particular focus on verse 1 that says Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, (emphasis mine) KJV version.

I know that this verse refers to all Christians staying the course in the Christian life but the words I highlighted also remind me that we all have our own God-given journey to travel, and we have all been given gifts that are ours alone and not to be compared with what others have been given.

I love Social Media, I really do. It’s a place where readers and authors can connect with each other, with other authors and with other readers. What I don’t like about it is that it is so easy to fall into the comparison game and falsely believe that we are falling short. So your child made the swim team but, oh someone else’s child has been made captain. I’m happy I signed a three book contract but wait, this person just signed one for six. It never stops if that’s what we choose to focus on.

I am someone who can honestly cry happy tears when I experience someone fully using the creative gifts they’ve been given. Whether it’s reading a profound passage of poetry, listening to a classical symphony or watching a documentary on how someone creates their songs. I am filled with gratitude to be part of the creative world that our Creator has blessed us with.

I also believe that being creative isn’t just about writing, art and music. It can be about tending your garden, cooking a special meal and raising and caring for a family is an art performed with the deepest love.

God has a purpose for us all and has given us gifts to carry them out. If we all remember to run our own races, we’ll get to the places we’re meant to be.
