Review: Mail-Order Mishaps by Susan Page Davis, Linda Ford, Vickie McDonough, Erica Vetsch

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

Dreams of Finding Mr. Right Go Wrong in the Old West

The Bride’s Dilemma by Susan Page Davis
Eve Martin arrives in Cheyenne to learn that man she came to marry is in jail, accused of a violent murder. Should she get on the next eastbound train, or has God brought her here to help save Caleb Blair’s life?

Romancing the Rancher by Linda Ford
Amelia expects a safe home for herself and her niece as mail-order bride to Zach Taggerty. Only Zach has never heard of her, and the last thing he needs is more complications in his life.

The Marriage Sham by Vickie McDonough
Mail-order bride Zola Bryant is devastated. Her newlywed husband is dead. But even worse, they were never truly married because the man who wed them was an outlaw not a preacher. What will she do now that her life and reputation are in tatters?

The Galway Girl by Erica Vetsch
A mail-order mix-up sends Irish lass Maeve O’Reilly to the Swedish community of Lindsborg, Kansas. Will Kaspar Sandberg consider it a happy accident or a disaster to be rectified as soon as possible?

My Review

The Bride’s Dilemma by Susan Page Davis - 4 stars
I love how determined Eve is to exonerate Caleb, and the way she reaches out to the townspeople to help their friend. A good story but a bit lacking in romance.

Romancing the Rancher by Linda Ford - 4 stars
It was hard to figure out who wrote the letters for Zach, since they were so specific to his family. He quickly sees how Amelia fits right in, bringing hope to his struggling family.

The Marriage Sham by Vickie McDonough - 4 stars
I felt bad for Zola and the way she was betrayed by the man who was supposed to be her husband. The marshal who informed her of his death helped her readjust, and get to know another local man who needed a sweet wife.

The Galway Girl by Erica Vetsch - 5 stars
My favorite story of the collection, opposites Maeve and Will have great chemistry, even though he had a different bride he had been writing. Mishaps and miscommunication cause conflict and worry, but as each character decides who they really want, it all turns out for the best.

Review: A Heart Worth Stealing by Joanna Barker

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

Little Sowerby, England, 1802

Miss Genevieve Wilde—a magistrate’s daughter and independent heiress—is determined to meet life’s challenges all on her own, just as her late father had taught her. So when her father’s pocket watch is stolen, she will do anything to get it back, especially when the local authorities prove incompetent.

Upon reading an advertisement in the paper, she takes a chance and contacts a thief-taker to find the watch. It’s a choice Ginny regrets when former Bow Street officer Jack Travers arrives on her doorstep. He is frustratingly flirtatious, irritatingly handsome, and entirely unpredictable, and Ginny wonders if she’ll be able to resist such a man.

But after Ginny discovers that the missing watch is just a small part of a larger, more frightening plot against her, she needs Jack’s help more than ever. To protect her home and her reputation, the two enter into a risky charade—pretending Jack is her cousin so he can begin his investigation, starting with the household staff. As they work together to unravel the mystery, Ginny finds herself falling fast for her charismatic thief-taker, leaving her heart in just as much danger as her life.

My Review

A mystery, plenty of witty banter, and swoony romance made this an unputdownable read! The characters are vibrant, and I loved their interactions and the humor woven in. Jack's undercover role as Ginny's idiot cousin was hilarious, and their bickering over investigative choices put them at odds until they figured out how to work together. The suspense increased as they realize the danger is greater than they believed, and I was glued to the pages as I tried to figure out along with Jack and Ginny the who and why. I adore character-driven romance, and this book was a perfect balance between that and an engaging plot. They added to each other rather than distracting, delivering a perfectly satisfying reading experience!

Review: Home Sweet Holiday by Michele Paige Holmes

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

Nearly four years have passed since Anna Lawrence fled her hometown the same day her best friends broke her heart and she was left at the altar. She’s hardly looked back since, while forging a new and solitary life in Seattle. When duty calls her home, she reluctantly returns to take care of the family store while her parents are away.

Eli Steiner is visiting his late great-grandfather’s estate in Holiday, Alabama, for the first and last time—to see the place he’s inherited and meet the other benefactor of his great-grandfather’s will before turning everything over to her. When the woman he meets is both the same, and very different, from the one in his grandfather’s letters, Eli’s intrigue leads him to stay longer, to uncover the mystery of Anna Lawrence and possibly heal her heart.

My Review

This book continues the dramatic story from the first book but focuses on different characters, so definitely read them in order to get a full understanding of the circumstances. I can see how Anna would have such a hard time forgiving her former best friend and fiancee after their betrayal. She has quite a bit of emotional angst to work through as she returns home since she basically escaped and didn't deal with it before. I appreciated Eli's new presence in her life as she begins again with her history surrounding her. They both have a healing process to go through, and their friendship provides a foundation of support, the perfect start to something deeper! The theme of forgiveness is strong in this story and I was so glad Anna, Bree, and Carson were able to finally find their way back to each other.

Review: Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs by Lisa Tawn Bergren, illustrated by Aleksander Zolotic

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

From the creator of the best-selling God Gave Us You comes a warm exploration of the ways parents show affection--and how it mirrors God's affection for his followers.

Parents are always looking out for the perfect bedtime book to create a sense of well-being before a night of rest. Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs explores a child's curiosity about how love is shown between parent and child, with the reassurance that Mama and Papa will always love their little one. And like Lisa Tawn Bergren's young protagonist asks his mother, this question is pressing on the minds of many children:

"Mama, how does God kiss us?"

Mama smiled. "He kisses us a hundred times a day; although if you don't pay attention, you might miss it."

"At night he kisses us with a shooting star. In the morning, he kisses us with sunlight, crawling across the fields and into our windows. On a hot summer afternoon, he kisses us with a gentle breeze. But most of all, he kisses us through our family. That's how God made us. That's why I give you Mama kisses."

My Review

I love the important message of how the affection in our families demonstrates our love for each other, and also reflects God's love for each of us. The high quality illustrations of various animal families are adorable, and children learn that we can see God's love for us in so many ways. This is a book that is fun to read again and again, and would make a wonderful gift!

Interview with Author Dana R. Lynn

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Sure! I grew up near Chicago, but moved to rural Pennsylvania after I met my husband at my bet friend’s wedding. He was the best man and I was the maid of honor. We’ve been married for almost 26 years and have 3 children, one daughter and two sons. Our daughter just got married, so I am still reeling from this change. However, we feel so blessed to have our son-in-law joining our family. I love writing stories that contain romance and also allow me to share my love of Jesus. I consider my writing a ministry. It’s been such a blessing in my life.

What do you do besides writing?

I am a full time teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. I love my job and find it very rewarding. I am also active in my church.

What was your favorite part of researching for this book?

I loved researching bounty hunters. I found out that nearly everything I thought about that job choice was wrong, or at least only a partial truth. I also found it interesting that bounty hunters aren’t legal in all states.

Do you have images you can share that come close to how you picture your characters? Do you like to find visual inspiration for your characters before or during your writing process?

In my mind, my heroine, Addison, resembles a young Emmy Rossum. Think of the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera (2004). I pictured a young Simon Baker as Isaiah. When I begin to think of characters, I search Pinterest to find images of people who best fit my mental image of the character. This helps me when I need to explain how the character looks to the marketing department. I will put an image on my character board so that as I write I can look to it. You’d be amazed how easy it is to forget a character’s eye color once you have several books of characters on your board. This way, instead of remembering, I can look at the image.

What are some songs that you listened to or inspired you while writing your book?

Music is so powerful to me. Some of my favorites for writing included “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban, “Remember Your Chains” by Steven Curtis Chapman, “One Small Child” by David Meece and “Breath of Heaven” by Amy Grant. Actually, Christmas music in general was a great muse!

What message would you like readers to ultimately take away from the book?

Out of all the books I’ve published to date, Hunted at Christmas is my favorite. And it’s all because of my hero. Isaiah Bender is somewhat of a prodigal son. He doesn’t realize it, but he is on his journey home. I really felt the theme of reconciliation and forgiveness while writing this book.

What can we look forward to coming from you in the future?

In May, the last Bender sibling will finally get his story! I have had so many readers ask me when Gideon will get his story, so I’m pleased to say Amish Witness to Murder will be out in 2024. Later in 2024, forensic artist Francesca Brown and FBI Special Agent Tanner Hall will work together and find love in Protecting the Amish Child. While I have a few other things in the works, these are the projects with finalized dates. I can’t wait to share these stories with readers!

Excerpt

David and the girls walked a couple of steps ahead of her, and she watched as Rowe pulled her hand away from her father’s grip and picked up a snowball, which she turned and threw, with surprisingly lethal aim, in Jenny’s direction.

Jenny’s reflexes were excellent, however, and she jerked to the right just in time to have the snowball whiz past her ear rather than get a cold, wet slap in the face.

Once again, she was sure that she had at least as much in common with Rowe as she did with Reba.

Realizing what was happening, David spun around. “Rowe,” he exclaimed. “What are you doing? You could have hurt Jenny. Are you okay?” he asked her.

She laughed as she bent down and began to gather snow. When she stood up she saw Rowe watching her, pulsing with pent-up energy, holding her own snowball, and noticed that David and Reba were laughing and busily packing their own ammunition.

After David called out the quick rule that aiming at someone’s face was not allowed, the snowballs flew with abandon, and soon Rowena joined in with her own unrestrained giggle, a blissful sound, alongside her sister’s.

Jenny gave a sigh of relief and thanked God that she had been able to turn the moment into something fun and silly for them all to share. Because it hadn’t escaped her attention that Rowe’s first throw wasn’t completely without malice. Despite her whatever attitude, trying to come across like she didn’t care, Jenny was sure that she struggled hugely with her mother’s absence and did not want anyone to take her place.

Jenny’s heart ached for her. She knew how devastating it was to resent a parent’s absence while, at the same time, desperately longing for them to be present.

She had absolutely no intentions of being part of David’s life. But when she saw him with his eyes crinkled in laughter, it was like seeing him as a boy again, her best friend, her first love.

Review: Christmas Stitches by Judith McCoy Miller, Nancy Moser, Stephanie Grace Whitson

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

3 Talented Seamstresses, 3 Christmas Romances
Return to Christmases of yesteryear with three seamstresses who use their talents to succeed in the late 1800s. But can love also be stitched into their lives?

A SEAMLESS LOVE by Judith Miller
Hannah Cushman possesses a special talent for embroidered fancywork and design which secures her a position in the Dressmaking and Millinery Shop in the Pullman Arcade near Chicago where she encounters childhood friend Daniel Price. Daniel is disappointed to learn Hannah is being courted by a detective with the Pinkerton Detective Agency. With two men vying for her attention, will Hannah seek God’s direction or ignore the warning signs He sets before her?

PIN’S PROMISE by Nancy Moser
Penelope (Pin) Billings and Jonathan Evers have loved each other since they were children, promising to one day get officially engaged. Both have distinct talents: Pin for sewing dresses and teaching others to sew and Jonathan—a doctor right out of school—in helping the people of the village. As adulthood nears and the time to fulfill their promise seems right, a tragic event pulls them apart, making both question their future. Will they discover they are stronger together than apart?

MENDING HEARTS by Stephanie Grace Whitson
Rachel Ellsworth has always been encouraged to pursue her passion for art. She looks forward to taking the Grand Tour on her honeymoon and experiencing the great museums of Europe. But when tragedy strikes, Rachel's plans are put on hold and she is forced to stay with two maiden aunts in a small Nebraska town where the most exciting things that ever happen are quilting bees and the county fair. Rachel expects her stay in Lost Creek to be temporary--until a letter from home changes everything. How can a budding artist who loves the big city expect to find happiness in the middle of nowhere?

My Review

A Seamless Love by Judith Miller - 3 stars
This story had a great setting and interesting historical details. Hannah is ambitious with her career as a seamstress with custom embroidery, and spends extra hours on special projects for the company owner's wife. Contrary to the book synopsis, she's not dating a Pinkerton agent, but a businessman from Chicago who spends a lot of time on the road (suspicious). I had hoped for more development of her relationship with Daniel, but the majority of the story focused on her trials with her beau and workload.

Pin’s Promise by Nancy Moser - 4 stars
I enjoyed the character growth as Pin learns to be patient and understanding, while Jonathan realizes the differences in treating patients in the town rather than a hospital. An endearing but abused set of children really steal the show, giving Pin and Jonathan the opportunity to look beyond themselves and draw closer together because of the shared trials. I loved the strong sense of community and service.

Mending Hearts by Stephanie Grace Whitson - 4 stars
Rachel and Adam have both suffered great loss, and I loved Rachel's two aunts that are the heart of the community- caring for Adam's children and bringing Rachel into their fold as well. Rachel's talent as an artist are brought into the story in subtle ways, inspiring those around her. Although Rachel's exuberant friend Nel sets her cap for Adam, the interference gives both Rachel and Adam time to heal from their  broken hearts before discovering the love blossoming between them. A supporting cast full of personality!
