EXCERPT

His question hit a little too close to home. Salt Lake was where her memories of Bradley lived, and she needed her fix. Though, she would never admit that was the reason she still came home sometimes.

“Maybe because another young woman is in the hands of a sadistic killer, and I happen to know exactly what that feels like? Enough to want to stick around and at least try to help find her.” Even if that meant watching her phone just in case she got another link via text. “Someone wants me to be part of this.”

Review: Where Courage Calls by Janette Oke, Laurel Oke Logan

My rating: 3 stars / I liked it

Synopsis

Her courage and her heart will be tested in ways she never expected...

Beth Thatcher has spent her entire life in the safe, comfortable world of her family, her friends, and the social outings her father's wealth provides. But Beth is about to leave it all behind to accept a teaching position in the rugged foothills of western Canada. Inspired by her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years ago, and gently encouraged by her father, Beth resolves to put her trust in God and bravely face any challenge that comes her way.

But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she'd feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don't even speak English. There isn't even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth's heart is torn between two young men--both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.

Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she's had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

My Review

I enjoyed this gentle story of Beth and her adventures in teaching and pulling a mining community together. The description of everyday mundane details slowed the pace, but immersed the reader in the lives of the characters. The children are a big part of the story, and romance was definitely on the back burner. I didn't realize that Beth's story continues through the whole trilogy, so it looks like her relationship with Jarrick will deepen in the next book. There is some danger in the mountains which comes to a head in the climax of the story, changing the dynamics of the little town for the better. Beth undergoes growth through her experiences and matures in her perspective and faith.

 EXCERPT

“Caleb’s here to take you to the ice cream social,” Charlotte announced, with hands on her hips.

“Thank you, Charlotte.”

“I still don’t understand why you can’t just ride with us. Pa is fixing to hitch up the team within the hour. We could all ride together.”

Annie crossed the room and framed Charlotte’s face in her hands. “My dear Charlotte, someday you will understand.”

“John Mark says it’s because Caleb fancies you.”

“John Mark says that, does he?” Annie attempted to hide her embarrassment from the younger girl.

What if what he said was true?

“Yes, he does, and as you know, John Mark thinks he knows positively everything about everything.”

Annie giggled. “Charlotte, I have grown quite fond of your resplendent sense of humor.”

“It’s true. John Mark does think Caleb fancies you and stares at you all wonderstruck during supper.”

“Wonderstruck? Surely John Mark has better things to do than examine the expressions of others at the supper table.”

“I don’t know, Miss Ledbetter. You know John Mark. He’s as meddlesome as they come.”

John Mark appeared in the doorway of the home. “Are you two gonna just stand there and talk women-folk nonsense or are you gonna come outside so we can go to the ice cream social?”

“Do you see what I mean, Miss Ledbetter?” Charlotte held a hand to her forehead. “Such nonsense I have never seen, except in my own brother. Whatever shall we do with him?”

Book Tour & Excerpt: The Lady's Guide to Death and Deception by Katherine Cowley

Synopsis

What is a spy willing to do when both her heart and her country are at risk?

Life changes once again for British spy Miss Mary Bennet when Napoleon Bonaparte escapes from the Isle of Elba. Mary quickly departs England for Brussels, the city where the Allied forces prepare for war against the French. But shortly after her arrival, one of the Duke of Wellington's best officers is murdered, an event which threatens to break the delicate alliance between the Allies.

Investigating the murder forces Mary into precarious levels of espionage, role-playing, and deception with her new partner, Mr. Withrow-the nephew and heir of her prominent sponsor, and the spy with whom she's often at odds. Together, they court danger and discovery as they play dual roles gathering intelligence for the British. But soon Mary realizes that her growing feelings towards Mr. Withrow put her heart in as much danger as her life. And then there's another murder. Mary will need to unmask the murderer before more people are killed, but can she do so and remain hidden in the background?

Advance Praise

“Cowley manages to turn a little-liked, ignored, and stilted girl into one of my favorites of Austen's characters...This third novel of the series is her best. I laughed and I cried and cheered for Mary to succeed in her endeavors and hopefully find love at last.”— Carol Pratt Bradley, author of The Light of the Candle

“5 STARS. Just a delight!”— Wren, The Zebra Reader

“I really enjoyed this book. It is a great addition to the series. I loved that Mary is finding love in a logical way that fits her character…Highly recommend.”— Mariana, Goodreads

“I absolutely love Katherine Cowley's Mary Bennet series, and I think [The Lady’s Guide to Death and Deception] may be the best book in the series.”— Madison, Goodreads

Excerpt

The context:

Mary Bennet and other spies are being given further training by spymaster Lady Trafford. After several weeks of weapons training, the idea of using physical affection—such as kissing—to gather information is proposed. The very thought scandalizes Mary, but ultimately she agrees to it as a possible weapon in a spy’s arsenal. However, Mary has never kissed anyone before, and she needs practice.

The curtains had been opened, exposing the windows on both ends of the long ballroom. Lady Trafford looked at each of the men. “I need you to commit to share not a word of this to anyone. If any of you choose, for any reason, to expose any of the women here or damage their future prospects, I will personally ensure that you regret the act.”

Each of the men agreed. Lady Trafford was not a woman to be trifled with.

She listed off each of the partners for the exercise, leaving Mary and Mr. Withrow for last, so it was clear that they were partners even before she said it. Mr. Withrow looked at her with a certain wariness, and then took her arm and led her to the large windows at the far end of the ballroom. They stopped, and he released her arm. In the distance, Mary could see the ocean, or really, the English Channel. Mr. Withrow had been with her the first time she had touched the water, there, on that very shore.

“Miss Bennet,” said Mr. Withrow, looking very solemn. His eyes were a deep brown. She had never noticed that before. Of course, she did not normally look at someone like this. She only noticed eye colour when drawing, and despite creating portraits of almost everyone else at Castle Durrington, she had never drawn Mr. Withrow.

“I know, as a spy, that there can be a great amount of pressure to conform to expectations,” said Mr. Withrow. “However, if this is not something that you want to do, you should hold your ground and not do it.”

“I have made up my mind,” said Mary. “I am not unwilling.”

“Not being unwilling is not the same as being willing.”

“Do you truly want to have a debate of words?”

He considered this, but before he could respond, she stepped closer to him, and pressed her lips against his.

After a moment she pulled away. She had not expected such an abundance of physical sensation, and such a pleasant abundance at that.

It would be useful to catalogue the physical sensations associated with kissing, so she did so in her mind. Her lips tingled and felt warm. She was relatively certain that her cheeks had gone red, but she felt no embarrassment. And she felt very much alive, as if she was more awake.

“I suspect I need more practice than one kiss, if you are willing, Mr. Withrow.”

“Yes, I am willing,” he said.

This time he leaned into her, and the kiss was a little longer. Mr. Withrow smelled of leather-bound books. The fact that he was about her height was rather convenient for this sort of activity.

They pulled away again.

“That is not the sort of kiss that would cause someone to reveal secrets,” said Lady Trafford before heading in the direction of the other couples who were positioned at other spots across the ballroom.

Frankly, Mary felt it had been a very good kiss, but as she had limited experience, she supposed Lady Trafford might be right.

“Do you have any suggestions, Mr. Withrow? I assume you have much more experience at this than I.”

“I have no suggestions for you, Miss Bennet.” This might be the first time he had not criticised her when given the opportunity. “However, we could try a more…French style of kiss. That may be what my aunt is suggesting.”

“A French style?”

“Well, it involves the parting of the lips and, often, the incorporation of the tongue.” He almost seemed embarrassed at this admission. She wondered how many women he had kissed before…how many French women.

“That sounds unusual,” said Mary.

“We do not need to attempt it if you are not inclined.” He adjusted his already straight cravat.

“I think it would benefit me to practise a full range of kissing styles.”

He no longer looked solemn, but beyond that, she could not tell what he was thinking at all. She wondered if he was experiencing the same range of physical sensations. How strange to think that they might be sharing that.

She was unsure of what to do, so she waited for him to initiate the kiss.

He reached out his hand, took a lock of her hair, and tucked it behind her ear. And then he kissed her.

The kiss felt very French, and produced a whole ream of additional sensations, which, due to their number, were difficult to catalogue. Better to get lost in them than to attempt to sort them in her mind.

When they pulled away, Mary was not quite sure what to say, so she said, “Merci, Mr. Withrow. That was quite educational.”

“For me as well, Miss Bennet.”

What could he possibly mean by that? He had clearly kissed before; surely there was nothing she could teach him.

Lady Trafford approached. “Do something with your hands, Miss Bennet. You are as stiff as a board. And Henry, your posture is just as rigid.”

“I do not know what to do with my hands,” said Mary.

“Then improvise,” said Lady Trafford.

Mary looked around the ballroom, hoping it would provide some sort of inspiration. Kitty had one hand on Mr. Stanley’s chest, and one on the nape of his neck. Miss Tagore had her hands wrapped around Mr. Twamley’s back. It was almost disturbing, but Mary reassured herself that everyone in this room was only kissing and doing nothing more. To her surprise, she rather liked kissing. It was a strange sort of admission.

“Shall we attempt?” said Mr. Withrow.

He held out his hand towards her, and she placed her hand in his. And then he smiled at her. Somehow, this felt more intimate than kissing him. After a moment, she placed her other hand on his chest. She could feel the sunlight on her face. They both initiated this kiss, and soon, Mr. Withrow had wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. It was quite extraordinary, like being wrapped in a blanket next to a cosy fire.

She did not want to stop kissing him. Of course, that was a sure sign that she should stop. She pulled away and brushed imaginary dirt off her skirt.

“I think I have had sufficient practice,” said Mary.

“Very well,” said Mr. Withrow, as formally as ever. He bowed to her, and then he left the room. An irresponsible part of Mary wanted to call him back.

Review: The Heart of the Mountains by Pepper Basham

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

Synopsis

To escape a forced marriage, Cora Taylor travels from England to the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of her brother, who is working as a teacher in a mission school. She hopes to find a place where her nursing skills and independent ideas will be accepted and appreciated, but nothing prepares her for the wild mixture of isolation, community, brokenness, and hope within these mountains…or in the person of Jeb McAdams.

Returning from the devastation of World War I emotionally damaged, Jeb McAdams struggles against the rampant mountain alcoholism to soothe his nightmares. It’s easy to hide within the mountains, or it was, before Cora Taylor arrives. Now, she seems to show up at every turn, bringing her ideas, curiosity, and beautiful eyes with her. Their mutual understanding of the costs of war leads to an unspoken bond that develops into a hesitant friendship.

As Cora turns her nursing experience and determination on establishing hygiene and education for women in the Appalachian community while also attempting to rescue Jeb from his own ghosts, Cora and Jeb’s partnership turns into a project of celebrating the gifts within Appalachia. But when the past sweeps back into their lives and an outbreak of scarlet fever threatens the future, will Cora and Jeb find a way to work together – even if it means unplanned matrimony – or will their different lives and brokenness tear them apart?

My Review

I loved so many things about this book. I didn't quite know what to expect, and it starts with some danger and excitement which pulled me right in and immersed me in the setting. The author did a great job of showing rather than telling about the personalities of her characters, and it brought them to life in my mind as I read. Cora comes from such a different culture and landscape, and I admired that she was compassionate and accepting rather than judgemental of the differences she encountered. Jeb especially felt that as she learns about his family secrets and helps as much as she can. I loved Jeb's determination to persevere through his struggles and continue to find hope and joy in his woodworking talent and his family. Cora is a healer and she works with the interesting people she encounters to learn and serve in more ways than just the physical. The sweet romance developed naturally and I enjoyed their chemistry and the common ground they find in helping the community, even at the most unexpected times.

Review: A Daddy for Christmas by Linda Ford

My rating: 2 stars / It was okay

Synopsis

Cowboy to the Rescue

Summoned by two little girls to help their mother in distress, Blue Lyons rushes to rescue widow Clara Weston. When the cowboy discovers the fatherless family has nowhere to go, he offers them food and shelter. But widower Blue won't get too close to the needy trio. He's lost too many people he's cared for, and he isn't about to set himself up for loss again.

For Clara, any dangers she may face on the frontier are preferable to staying with her controlling father. Although she's determined to keep her independence, Blue's kindness and tenderness are hard to resist. Can two pint-size matchmakers help Clara and Blue open their guarded hearts in time for Christmas?

My Review

I was intrigued in the beginning of this story, with Blue rescuing a stubborn mother and her two precocious daughters. The character development was promising, but then slowed as Clara repeatedly refused help or only accepted if she could prove to herself that she is contributing, even when it's encroaching on Blue's work. Blue's thoughts also stalled on his guilt and remorse, not allowing himself to feel worthy of happiness. The secrecy go old as well, and I eventually lost interest in seeing how it would all play out. I think it would have helped me for there to be more connection and revealing of layers earlier on in the book.

Review: To Save Her Child by Margaret Daley

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

Synopsis

In Search of Her Son

When a young boy goes missing from wilderness day camp, Alaskan search and rescue worker Josiah Witherspoon is on the case. The brooding ex-marine promises to find the child and return him to his worried mother. But he doesn't know that Ella Jackson has a secret past. One that could put them all in danger. When tensions mount, Ella needs to tell Josiah the truth—but she can't set aside her fears enough to trust him. Ella and Josiah are ready to risk their lives to save her son, but will they risk their hearts, as well?

Alaskan Search and Rescue: Risking their lives to save the day

My Review

I love Alaska as a setting! There is something so vast about it. That sense brought the danger to another level when a few boys get lost in the woods with adult footprints following them. I loved learning about the search and rescue workers and their dogs. The suspense of the plot is actually broken into two phases, and it wasn't quite believable that this family would have two such similar dangerous experiences from completely unrelated sources. Overall I enjoyed the characters, and the scenes with Ella's son bonding with Josiah's dog were so heartwarming.

GUEST POST FROM AUTHOR ANNEKA WALKER

I’m so excited to share with you about my experience retelling Sleeping Beauty! Let’s chat about retellings in general first so you can see why I took the direction I did.

A big portion of books or shows are retellings in some form. Some these are direct retellings, like all the many historic versions of Pride and Prejudice (trust me when I say, we can’t have too many Jane Austen adaptions). Other retellings are parodies or loosely inspired by another story. My book, The Dreaming Beauty, would be considered a fractured retelling. This means I’ve taken some familiar elements from Sleeping Beauty, but changed the plot points, creating a fresh new story. Why did I do this? I wanted my readers to find the fun Easter eggs from the fairy-tale they love but experience a new romantic adventure at the same time. The predictable elements are comforting, while the twists and unexpected scenes keep the pages turning.

Now to dive into plotting a fractured Sleeping Beauty tale. I knew I didn’t want my character asleep the entire book. I also write in a historical fiction genre, so sleeping for a hundred years wasn’t going to fly. Dreams, however, are related to sleeping and are both historical and realistic, and also give a paranormal vibe creating the fairy-tale tone I desired. I ran with this idea and the rest of the story evolved quickly in my mind. I created my own version of a worthy prince and wicked step-mother. And the doting fairies we love from the Disney adaption turned into three lovable aunts. From there, I played with other sleeping beauty elements and era-specific research until I had a something uniquely mine.

Once upon a dream, two cursed people fell in love…

You’ll have to read my story to find out what happens next!
