Carter can barely tolerate Christmas; Abby loves it. She can’t wait past October to build her favorite display, the annual Christmas book tree stack, which Carter despises.

When an automobile accident throws Carter and Abby together, Uncle Mannie, who is harboring secrets of his own, sees a chance for lasting happiness for his little girl. But there are so many hurdles, and not much time left. Will this Christmas deliver the miracles everyone is hoping for?

Amazing Top Ten Facts from Christmas by Accident

1. If you’ve read any of my previous books—specifically The Rent Collector or The Orphan Keeper, both serious works—and are expecting the same tone in Christmas by Accident, you will be disappointed. Christmas by Accident is a tongue-in-cheek tale that makes light-hearted fun of the many sentimental Christmas stories published every year. In essence, I make fun of sappy Christmas stories by telling a slightly sappy Christmas story.

2. The original working title was The Christmas Carol Angel Box Wish, because all the best nouns are taken. The publisher deemed it too long and changed the name to Christmas by Accident—which makes it sound like a bad Hallmark movie, but I think that’s the point. Know that it’s a fun Christmas read and yes, like all Hallmark movies, there is romance in the story. :)

3. My path to becoming a published author is closely reflected in the main character, Carter Cross. With no experience, but a thought stuck in my head that wouldn’t go away, I decided I could write a book. I’m saying that if someone wants to understand what I’m like as a person, the thoughts that roll through my head, my writing journey, read Christmas by Accident.

4. In the story I pay subtle homage to many Christmas classics, perhaps borrowing a line of dialogue from one or including an obscure quotation from another. While some references are obvious, others are subtle. A fun game as you read is to see how many you can find.

5. I have funny children (funny ha-ha, not funny peculiar), who married witty spouses. When I needed a clever line, I often turned to family. I’d send off a group email spelling out the scene and then let them each take their best shot to fill in what was needed—and I was never disappointed.

6. As a marketer at heart, I enrolled the help of my two-year-old granddaughter to make an egglessnog video (explained below), because who doesn’t love watching a chatty two-year old cook in the kitchen? Check out this link. It’s worth watching.

7. Now to egglessnog. As a kid I loved eggnog, until I realized it’s made with raw eggs—Ew, gross!—and I haven’t been able to drink it since. That changed when I discovered egglessnog (eggnog made without eggs). I spent days perfecting the recipe (which I included at the back of the book, since it plays a part in the story) and you won’t want to miss it. It’s even more delicious than real eggnog!

8. AndrĂ© the chef is based on a real person I met serendipitously in Denmark. He creates some of the most amazing desserts on the planet—seriously.

9. The self-written obituary at the end of the story is heartfelt and close to what I’d like to have as my own.

10. There are no accidents—especially at Christmas.

Brides & Brothers by Anneka R. Walker #CleanRomanceforXmas21 #Giveaway

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Brides & Brothers
By Anneka R. Walker
Contemporary Romance
Paperback, E-book & Audiobook, 270 Pages
September 1, 2021 by Covenant Communications

A modern retelling of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Camille Kelly is in real danger of becoming an old maid—at least by Cherish, Montana, standards. She has all but given up on finding Mr. Right—until her broken laptop leads her to Aiden Peterson, a tall, dark, and handsome computer genius. Camille would never have believed her magic moment was right around the corner, but after two whirlwind weeks, she has a ring on her finger and has happily ever after in sight. However, she soon discovers Aiden is part of a daunting package deal . . .

As the eldest of seven brothers, Aiden has never had a problem living under the same roof as his rambunctious siblings. When he falls for Camille, he is confident she’ll fit right into his family’s already bursting home. He thought wrong. Aiden and Camille’s storybook romance comes to a screeching halt when she discovers her new living situation. Not willing to submit to a life mothering a bunch of grown men, Camille has only one option: she embarks on a campaign to improve her new brothers-in-law and marry them off. And what better candidates for wives than her own best friends?

Excerpt

No one should underestimate the influence of a woman. If Aiden Peterson had realized this a few years ago, it would’ve saved him a lot of grief in his efforts to parent his six younger brothers. Lost in his thoughts, Aiden leaned against the marble countertop in his kitchen while he waited for his dinner to finish cooking. It had been a week since he’d said goodbye at the airport to his baby brother, Grant, who had deployed to Iraq. Watching Grant hug his girlfriend, the woman who’d turned him into a well-behaved man almost overnight, had reminded Aiden of a promise he’d made ten years ago at his parents’ graveside—one he intended to keep.

The timer went off, and Aiden pulled the pan of fish sticks and fries out of the oven. He grimaced when he accidentally dropped the hot pad onto the heating element. Instantly, a corner of fabric disappeared in a small flame. He grabbed a spatula, scooped the burning hot pad onto the floor, and deftly pounded out the flames.

It didn’t bode well if thoughts of dating again had distracted him to the point of nearly burning down his house. While he loved living in a bachelor pad with his brothers, a guy could only live off frozen food for so many years before he cracked. If getting married could change this, dating might be worth it. With a sigh of disgust, he rinsed the charred hot pad under water. He let it drip dry before he opened the drawer next to the oven and threw it in.

“I saw that.” Benson drawled from the other side of the room. Aiden glanced at his brother just thirteen months younger than him, sitting in the family room just off the kitchen. He wished Benson didn’t have an inch on him in height and a broader chest. It had been so much easier to tell his brothers to mind their own business when they were smaller. “When are you going to learn how to cook?” Benson asked him.

“No need when I have you around,” Aiden said. Benson was the only one of the Peterson brothers who knew how to cook, and his meals consisted of potatoes and potatoes.

“What if I get married and leave?”

Aiden’s brow rose. It was ironic how casually Benson had brought up marriage, the topic that kept ringing in his own mind. “You have to learn how to talk to girls before you can get married.”

Benson had a lot going for him, but he was reserved and antisocial. He needed a woman to pull him out of his shell. In fact, all his brothers could benefit from the influence of a woman—a person who could bring light back into their lives, like Amy had done for Grant.

Benson picked at his teeth with a toothpick. “There isn’t a need to talk to girls. They talk enough for everyone.”

Benson’s hang-up with dating was part of the Peterson plague. They’d had to be independent and emotionally guarded for so long, but it didn’t have to be like that anymore. Once Aiden married, the pattern would cycle right down the alphabet. Next would be Benson, then the twins, Cade and Daegan, then Flynn, Easton, and Grant. In fact, Aiden didn’t see why he couldn’t get the older five married before Grant’s deployment ended in a year’s time.

No one else was home, so this was Aiden’s opening to confess his thoughts and gauge Benson’s reaction. “We can work on the talking-to-girls thing. I want you to start dating.” He had Benson’s full attention now. Aiden juggled a hot fish stick back and forth between his hands before setting it back down in the pan with resolve. “Seeing Grant and Amy together got me thinking about Mom and Dad. After the crash, I vowed I’d get us all married and settled down. More than anything, they wanted us to find happiness with our own families. It’s been ten years. It’s time.”

Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series by Nichole Van #CleanRomanceforXmas21 #Giveaway

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Brotherhood of the Black Tartan series
By Nichole Van
Historical Romance
Paperback, E-book, & Audiobook
Apr 26, 2019 - Sept 8, 2021 by ‎ Fiorenza Publishing

From book 1, Suffering the Scot:

Lady Jane Everard cannot abide the new Earl of Hadley. The unmannered Scot is a menace to genteel ladies everywhere, what with his booming laugh and swishing kilt and endless supply of ‘ochs’ and ‘ayes.’ Jane wishes Lord Hadley would behave as an earl should and adhere to English rules of polite conduct.

Andrew Langston, the new Earl of Hadley, knows that the English aristocracy think poorly of his lowly Scottish upbringing. This is hardly new. History is littered with the English assuming the worst about Scotland. By living up to their lowest expectations, he is simply fulfilling his civic duty as a Scotsman.

Jane sees Andrew as an unmannered eejit. Andrew considers Jane to be a haughty English lady. But, as the saying goes, . . . opposites attract.

And what if beneath his boisterous behavior and her chilly reserve, Andrew and Jane are not nearly as different as they suppose? Can Scotland and England reach a harmonious union at last?

From Suffering the Scot, Brotherhood of the Black Tartan, book 1

Andrew spread his hands wide. “It’s a problem for all us Scottish men, tae be honest. Our cross tae bear.”

Lady Jane opened her mouth. Shut it. And then shook her head. “I am sure you are both quite delusional.”

“Nae, the lasses cannae help themselves,” Andrew said.

“Aye. A man strolls by in a kilt, and the lasses go all shoogly in the legs.” Kieran sagged in his chair, mimicking the motion of a lady swooning.

“That is simply ridiculous.” Lady Jane shook her head.

“’Tis the Lord’s own truth, Lady Jane.” Andrew pressed a hand over his heart.

“Aye,” Kieran chimed in. “They dinnae call a kilt the passion pleats for nothing.”

“Passion pleats?!” Peter hooted, slapping his knee.

“Dinnae mock a fine kilt, Peter. The kilt swish is no’ tae be underestimated.”

“The kilt swish?” Lady Jane’s tone dripped with scorn.

“It’s a well-known fact that the lasses appreciate watching a man’s passion pleats swish as he walks.”

“Particularly from the backside,” Kieran helpfully clarified.

“Aye, allow me to show ye.” Andrew stepped away from the table, walked to the door with extra swagger in his step, turned, and strode back to the table. His kilt swinging like a bell back and forth with every step.

He spread his hands wide. See what I mean.

She shook her head. I’m not convinced.

Andrew motioned to Kieran. He stood with a grin.

“Watch carefully,” Andrew said.

Side-by-side, he and Kieran walked to the door, shoulders back, head high. Andrew’s kilt bumped his knees as it swung. He could practically feel the intensity of Lady Jane’s eyes drilling him between the shoulder blades.

Turning around, Andrew held Lady Jane’s gaze as he walked back. She tried to maintain a demur posture, but Andrew knew she had been looking.

Rare was the woman who could resist a braw Scot in a kilt.

Lady Jane pressed her lips together, clearly not wishing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.

Andrew was having none of it.

He wanted Fiery Jane.

Folding his arms across his chest, he angled forward. “Now, I dinnae want to argue with ye, Lady Jane, but I have noticed ye eyeing the kilt swish a time or two. Not just tonight.”

“I have done no such thing, Lord Hadley.” Lady Jane’s brows drew down, while a hot flush crept up her neck, challenging her denial. “Precisely how much whisky have you imbibed this evening?”

“I willnae allow you tae change the subject, Lady Jane.”

“I am hardly changing the subject.” Lady Jane surged to her feet. “I am merely pointing out that you are wrong, my lord—”

“I’m no’ wrong.”

“—and furthermore, calling a kilt the passion pleats is the most absurd phrase—”

“Accurate. Ye mean the most accurate phrase.”

“I most certainly do not!” Lady Jane hurled the words at him.

As they spoke, Andrew found himself leaning toward her, fists pressed against the tabletop, his entire body angled. For her part, Lady Jane motioned widely, all pretense of decorum forgotten—gray eyes flashing, chest heaving, auburn curls framing her fine-boned face.

Fiery Jane, at last! Utterly freed and snapping with life.

She was magnificent.

It had taken nearly ten days of constant harassment, but Andrew had finally broken through her reserve.

He felt like crowing from the rooftops.

Right after he throttled her.

“I didn’t even know you were participating in the auction until I saw the program tonight. Before I could find you myself, a friend introduced me to Todd, and Todd asked if I’d be willing to meet you...” Derrick’s mouth pulled up on one side like he was trying not to smile. He was all boyish innocence and every bit as appealing as Anne remembered as he added, “He, uh, he actually asked me if I’d flirt with you a little.”

Anne choked out a surprised laugh. “Thank you for sparing us both that awkwardness.”

Grinning, he assured her, “It wouldn’t be awkward for me.” His gaze traveled down and settled on a spot. “You have a little smudge of something on your dress. Let me guess—ice cream?”

She frowned. A combination of embarrassment and discomfort blazed through her. How dare he draw on their former intimacy like this?

Glancing down, she tugged clumsily on her wrap and thought up a lie. “No, it’s, um...oil.”

“Oil?” he repeated skeptically.

“Yep.” She shrugged and stared him down. “Moonlighting on the oil rig.”

He started to smile, to call her out, but then seemed to pick up on her back-off signal. He cleared his throat and composed his features. “How have you been, Anne?”

“For all eleven of the years it’s been since I’ve seen you?” She heard the clear edge in her voice. There was a chance she hadn’t gotten over this quite as well as she’d believed. But you know what? What he’d done had been really...hurtful, and perhaps she was still a tad angry. Now that she thought about it, there was no rule stating she had to make this reunion easy on him.

“If I stick to the plan…” She sighed. “I’ll be home in time for a festive swim in my pool.”

As the snow piled up outside, he couldn’t imagine outdoor swimming. Of course, she probably had a difficult time appreciating the accumulating snow. “Will your parents miss you?”

“Probably, but they aren’t home either. We haven’t really celebrated both days since my childhood. If I suggested spending the holiday under their roof, I can almost hear their gasps.”

“You’re not sentimental?” He stuffed the last bite of pancake in his mouth.

“I don’t know why I’m being so honest.” She shook her head. “You’re the first person I’ve ever met who doesn’t find the real me boring. I never really understood what people meant about being themselves. On a whim, my mom signed me up as a baby model. She started fielding offers before I could walk. If I’m not acting, I don’t know who I am.”

He swallowed the last bite. Chocolate chips melted on his tongue. “I do.”

She gulped. “You do?”

“The Kara I’ve met is kind and caring.”

“I don’t think many people would agree.”

“Their loss.”

She stood, her chair scraping the linoleum tile. Grabbing both plates, she crossed to the sink and turned on the water. “You want to see if the cottage has any holiday movies or decorations in hiding?”

He nodded and finished his coffee. In a second, she brushed off his words. He wouldn’t rescind the sentiment. Lately, he hadn’t enjoyed much normalcy. How strange to have found the sensation with a celebrity.

A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE COLLECTION

We wish you a merry Christmas and a happily ever after! This special holiday historical romance anthology featuring three heartwarming novellas proves that no matter the obstacles, ’tis the season for love.

Meet Me Under the Kissing Bough
by Josi S. Kilpack

Deborah Winfrey hasn’t had the heart to host a holiday party since her husband’s death. But this Christmas, it’s time to move forward. The festivities bring renewed life to her home, and the attentions of two very different men promise a chance at new love.

Healing Hearts for the Holidays

Julia Hunt is strictly forbidden from associating with the family in the nearby manor—including the handsome younger son, Esmond, who quickly steals her heart. With Christmas around the corner, an old bundle of hidden love letters may be the key to her own happily ever after.

A Christmas Correspondence
by Sarah L. McConkie

In this novella inspired by the timeless tale, A Christmas Carol, John Charleston finds himself on an unexpected journey in the company of the insufferable Lady Caroline Morleigh. But the magic of the season has a way of softening even the hardest of hearts.

Guest Post: Behind the Scenes

This book is a retelling of A Christmas Carol. Most of the characters' names are some kind of spin-off of the original, or found somewhere in the book. It was fun figuring out a way to make past, present, and future work through letters and not ghosts! One of my favorite subtle hints are the door knockers (that give a nod back to the original) and the opening line of chapter 1: "The fact was that John Charleston felt dead. Dead as a doornail, really, whatever that meant."

—Sarah

About the Author

Sarah L. McConkie started her writing career in the second grade with a thirteen-page magnum opus about dinosaurs. Although the plot line and penmanship lacked polish, Sarah learned she loved retiring to bed thinking of what to write the next day. On a good night, she still does the same thing. Sarah took up the pen several years later after tucking her own little dreamer into bed and now combines modern life experiences, a robust knowledge of regency classics and a passion for all things old fashioned and proper to craft her historical romances. She co-stars with her own Mr. Right in the real-life romantic comedy she calls life. Sarah believes creating thought-provoking and moral stories promotes literacy in a world that needs more readers. She has a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and taught junior high choir for several years before becoming a stay-at-home mother to four darling children. She currently teaches piano and voice for BYU independent study.

In JILTED, a would-be groom is ditched at the altar, leaving him with a private island and nothing to do—until he ropes the beautiful private chef into being his personal tour guide. Could he have been in the right place at the right time after all, just with the wrong woman?

In STARSTRUCK, a best-selling author is living her lifelong fantasy of seeing her books made into a television series, until her ex-boyfriend is brought onboard to replace the injured male lead… and she has veto power. Can he convince her that he’s a changed man in time to save both his job and her dream?

In SNOWBOUND, two rival architects with a shared history get snowed in at the site of their dream job and are forced to put aside their differences to make it through the weekend. Because as the temperature drops and their competition heats up, the only way out is together... with or without their hearts intact.

In SUNSWEPT, a driven real estate agent and a laid-back beach bum get double-booked into the same vacation rental… then decide they just might be the answer to each other’s plus-one problems. But what happens when a fake relationship turns out to involve real feelings?

The Discovered by Love novellas are the perfect holiday reads—long enough to deliver a satisfying, heart-warming romance, but short enough to offer a quick, one-sitting escape from your to-do lists.

The Third Character: Why A Great Setting is Essential to Short Romance

By Carla Laureano

I’m a sucker for a romantic setting, whether it’s my favorite overseas spots or little-known corners of my own hometown. But where setting can be a nice surprise in a full-length book, it’s absolutely crucial in a novella!

Romance novellas are short and sweet, and they focus exclusively on the falling-in-love butterflies between the main couple, without much distraction from outside plot or secondary characters. Setting adds a necessary texture and interest to an otherwise straightforward story, and it can either act as a main feature in the couple’s burgeoning romance or as a source of conflict that threaten their happiness. So with that kind of importance in the story, why not make it a great one?

My Discovered by Love novella quartet does just that—it features some of the most beautiful settings in the world as a background for sweet, heart-warming romance.

In Jilted, a private island off the coast of Belize serves as both the catalyst and the backdrop for a whirlwind romance between a jilted groom, Derek, and the island’s private chef-turned-tour guide, Bethany. As they tour Mayan ruins, sample street food in charming mainland towns, and bask in the sunshine and turquoise waters, it’s hard to imagine not falling in love with an intriguing stranger!

Starstruck takes the excitement of London and the whimsy of a comic and fandom convention to bring a fantasy novelist back together with her estranged actor boyfriend when he’s subbed in as the romantic hero in a last-minute cast change for her TV adaptation. As the clock counts down toward the cast announcement and Nick scrambles to get Christine’s approval for the role of his lifetime, London Fan Fest is not just an entertaining background but a challenge to overcome.

For Snowbound, I stuck closer to home—my beloved Colorado—but set the story in the high country near the ritzy enclave of Vail. This time the setting is a straight-up source of conflict when two rival architects get snowed in at the site of the dream renovation and are forced to work through their differences to make it out in one piece! (Still, I’m not sure it’s a complete hardship, being stuck in front of a roaring fire in a multi-million-dollar ski lodge with your grad school crush…)

And last, Sunswept takes us back around to another sunny, tropical location, this time Islamorada, a village that stretches across six of Florida’s keys. When a tech entrepreneur reluctantly comes to Florida to witness his ex-girlfriend marry his college roommate and ends up double-booked in a beach house with a real estate agent there for a conference, they decide to turn an inconvenience into a solution to their plus-one problems. Which means that the lovely ocean-front cottage is both conflict and catalyst for their happily ever after!

Clearly, I’ve caught the travel bug hard with these novellas, and my biggest goal was to make readers fall in love with these beloved settings as much as the characters. Because the only thing better than falling in love is having a beautiful sunset to ride into together.

Love and Lavender
(Mayfield Family Romance #4)
By Josi S. Kilpack
Historical Romance

November 2, 2021 by Shadow Mountain

Hazel Stillman is a woman of rare independence and limited opportunities. Born with a clubbed foot, Hazel knows marriage is unlikely, so she devotes herself to teaching at a private girls' school.

When her uncle offers Hazel a substantial inheritance if she marries, she is offended. What kind of decent man would marry for her money? But when she learns the school might be sold, she knows she must consider all her options.

Duncan Penhale thrives on order and process. He has no interest in marriage, so when Elliott Mayfield, his guardian's brother, offers him an inheritance if he weds, Duncan finds it intrusive. However, an inheritance means he could purchase a building and run his own accounting firm.

Hazel and Duncan believe they have found a solution to both of their problems: marry one another, claim their inheritances, and then part ways to enjoy their individual paths. But then Uncle Mayfield stipulates that they must first live together as a couple for one year.

Over time, their marriage of convenience becomes much more appealing than they had anticipated. At the end of the full year, will they go their separate ways or could an unlikely marriage have found unsuspecting love?

About the Author

Josi S. Kilpack hated to read until her mother handed her a copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond when she was 13. From that day forward, she read everything she could get her hands on and credits her writing “education” to the many novels she has “studied” since then. She is a four-time Whitney Award winner, including two Novel of the Year awards for Lord Fenton's Folly and As Wide as the Sky and a Best of State winner in Fiction. She writes her national women's fiction under the pen name of Jessica Pack (say Josi Kilpack really fast and you'll see why she chose it). Josi currently lives in Northern Utah and is the mother of 4 wonderful kids. For more information about Josi or her books, please visit her blog, What is a Sundial In the Shade?
