The shadows were growing longer, the sun slipping toward the horizon. If Ivy didn’t get home soon, Cicely would come looking for her. Reluctantly she got to her feet, and started back toward the Delve.

A dark shape flashed by, and instinctively she whirled toward it. A little bird with wings like a bent bow, body tapering smoothly to a two-pronged fork of a tail. It swooped over the valley, moving so fast that Ivy’s eyes barely had time to focus before it was out of sight.

December 1st: Ralene Burke – Armor of Aletheia

Karina sat down on a rock at the edge of the Continental River. She was tired. And sore. And now this. “What do we do?”

Tristan squatted by the riverbank, staring at the other side. He tilted his face toward the mid-afternoon sun. “River’s shallow enough here to cross without a bridge.”

“But the water’s freezing!”

December 2nd: Michelle Diener – Breakaway

Leo Gaudier walked a dangerous path.

Sofie didn't pretend that wasn't part of what attracted her to him in the first place. She was all for sticking it to the Core Corporations. All for it with bells on.

And it didn't hurt that she’d really liked the look of him since they’d met.

There'd been a little catch in her heart, a little hitch in her breath. A trembling, like fear or excitement. She'd never been affected like that before.

December 3rd: Sandra Fernandez Rhoads – Mortal Sight

Flipping through a few pages, I imagine John Milton standing with quiet authority, patiently waiting for me to pick up on the meaning, the same way my old English teacher would do when I’d stare out the window. I stop on a page where I’ve circled and highlighted the verses:

Shine inward and the mind through all her powers
Irradiate; there plant eyes; all mist from thence
Purge and disperse, that I may see and tell
Of things invisible to mortal sight.

Disappointment wrapped its fingers around my throat. I struggled to take one breath, then another. Baldwin was the same every day. Seeing the flash of clarity disappear in his eyes was crushing. Would he ever get truly better? And did I stay with him out of love or guilt? Probably both. If Baldwin didn’t recognize me, what did that do to our relationship? I couldn’t imagine what his parents were going through.

A woman’s voice slipped through my dark mood. “It’s been a long time, but it’s good to be back for a visit.”

Across a sweep of waves, the new world called to me. The tangleroot shore of Meriel’s rim rocked beneath my bare feet, daring me to leave the island’s safety and venture to the smudge on the horizon. Sea breezes tickled my skin, stirring my excitement and making my muscles twitch.

Beside me, Brantley rolled a cloak and stuffed it into his pack. “We should have left at first light.” Wind brushed fair curls across his eyes, and he tossed his head like an impatient pony shaking his mane. A mottled brown tunic stretched across his broad shoulders, and a longknife rested at his hip.

“Zacdari! What in Void’s Embrace are you waiting for?”

Claxons rang in her helmet, a grating noise that made it hard to think. Her heads-up gave a visual on the target station, and another on the left displayed the corvette’s actual trajectory. The dots were not aligned.

Lance Corporal Eija Zacdari could handle it. She might be a mere candidate for the Tertian Intergalactic Hyperjump Program for Exploration. She might be a Tryssinian orphan with more scars than fingers. But she wasn’t a quitter. Getting onto the Prevenire, the first HyPE ship to access the hyperaccelerated slipstream to Kuru System, was her last hope.

“Welcome, my lord Conor,” Marcan said with a bow, his voice as calm and capable as ever. “Your old chamber has been prepared for you. Come.”

Dolan gave him a nudge, and, reluctantly, Conor followed Marcan up the front steps into the great hall. Torches threw flickering light on the cavernous room, from its rush- covered floor to the curve of the ceiling, though they could not quite dispel the shadows at its apex. Conor’s gaze settled on four unfamiliar men standing before the dais that held the king’s throne. From their elaborately embroidered clothing, he guessed three of them to be lords of the realm. The fourth’s clean- shaven head and plain robes marked him as a cleric.

December 8th: Belle Malory – Deviant Descendants

“Let’s say by some miracle, the fire determines you’re worthy,” Redtree continued, his hawk-eyed gaze darting around the crowd. “Make sure you hold your hand steady. You must outlast the pain to complete the Summoning. Once it’s done, you and your weapon are bound for life.”

Well, this was just perfect. He was expecting each of us to go up there, in front of everyone. I wasn’t afraid of the pain, but I didn’t want to put my hand in while others were staring. I could already hear their boos and cackles coming for me. Thankfully, Redtree went in alphabetical order, which meant I would be one of the last to be called.

“Run!” Sister Helen shouted.

Somehow, my body obliged. My legs carried me down the alleyway, past dumpsters and trashcans. At the street, I stopped briefly to figure out where to go next. I glanced at the paper and realized I had a bit of distance to cover. The address was near Central Park, but the orphanage was in the opposite direction. In fact, the orphanage wasn’t even in Manhattan. There wasn’t time to figure out a route though. At the sound of running footsteps, I looked over my shoulder and saw two men dressed in black fast approaching.

Without a second thought, I broke into a sprint and headed right.

The city was beautiful and wicked, but it was a false beauty compared to the things I had seen. When he cursed me I could feel everything, from contentment to sorrow, but never love. Seid had given me the ability to see it in others and destroy it when it was false or save it if true. Yet the only thing that managed to stir me these days was the memory of my death. Only my memories kept me going. Vengefully I often wished he still knew my every thought and suffered the recall of our every moment together.

Thinking of Seid made my cloak slip enough to expose an outline of my features. I never would have noticed my mistake if the boy coming my way hadn’t pointed and began to shout a stream of curses to his friends. Other people were turning and beginning to take notice, the old couple clutching onto each other to ward away the winter chill, the little girl picking their pocket for loose change, Black Market vendors dealing on the side.

“So. This is Riette Kaleveld. She is rather lovely, don’t you agree?”

Willem made a non-committal noise, and I cringed at the idea of them talking about me like I wasn’t there.

“Though I should have known her hair would be brown. They always are from Elternow.”

It was not Calum at all. He was only holding her. The magic was something else, something he wanted her to feel.

They’d gone lower than she realized, farther toward the depths of the undercity. Toward the queen’s lair. The magic always flowed and ebbed, but Nim had not felt it, an unfathomable power that had drawn her, that had allowed her to believe she was only walking through the corridors and not into another trap. There she was snared, so it rose toward her, swelling through the room and washing over her. Her body came alive with tingling heat, her flesh on fire beneath her clothes. It wanted to burn her, wanted to devour whatever was not part of it. Whatever did not belong.

Daegan heard the whispered voices in unison chanting what he assumed had to be the ancient prophecy he was told about. Over and over again the whispered chants rang in his mind until Daegan, hands clutching his head to keep it from exploding, couldn’t take it anymore and yelled out loud, “Silence!”

The Orchids. They were speaking to him. The words of the prophecy cycled through his head. This time he controlled it. He paid attention to the words, making every effort to make sense of them. Sadness and despair were heavy in the undertones of the voices, but as the chant went on they gained strength... and hope. As Daegan reflected upon what his part could be, for the first time in a long time, he dared to believe... and to hope.

“Is that him?” Gabby slapped Tessa’s leg like an overexcited Chihuahua. “That has to be him. Tessa, is that him? Tell me it’s him.”

Tessa laughed. “I told you I don’t know what he looks like.”

“Just look,” Gabby begged.

There was no point arguing with Gabby when she got something in her head. Tessa lowered her arms, the balloon bouncing against her thigh as she peered into the dwindling crowd. Her model had to be one of the few pedestrians heading this way.

One couple.

Another couple with two pudge-cheeked kids and a scraggly furred dog.

Another couple.

Tessa couldn’t see any men walking alone. He didn’t mention traveling with anyone. “Are you sure you saw him? Which one did you think…”

Oh.

Soft brown hair; eyes, too far away to notice the color but striking enough to make her heart feel like it was thumping inside of her throat. He wore a tight-cut charcoal-grey suit — more formal than anything her previous models wore — that hinted at hard curves beneath.

He definitely had the body of a model, but not hers.

He was beautiful.

Too beautiful.

Her models were usually elderly, with sagging skin and greying hair; the contours of their bodies made for soft, delicate strokes on paper. This man would be all hard lines and bold strokes.

His gaze found hers.

Tessa’s breath caught in her throat.

“Oh my,” Gaby squeaked.

Some things should never be forgotten—at least, that’s what they tell me. I can’t forget anything. Not what I had for breakfast last week (regulation protein cereal). Not the Collective News broadcast from last month (Supreme Lover Midgate wanted to wish us all “a very happy Triumph of Love season.”). Not even my first Hater Recognition Sign (Haters can’t love. Period.).

Usually I can block most of it out, but sometimes it bubbles over, and I end up getting in trouble. Like when I recite my Dorm Leaders’ exact words back to them. Or worse: when I recite what they said four years ago.

The name “Memory Freak” sticks to me like static electricity.

I’ve been living here in the Nursery Dorms for as long as I can remember. And that’s where my head gets weird. Because as far as I can tell, my memories only start when I’m already a kid. Before that first day in the dorms? Nothing. After that day? Picture-perfect recall, all ten years of it.

I get it. In Nursery Dorm 492, every day is almost a mirror image of the day before. At precisely 0630, our stim-beds wake us up. Like drones we all file into the communal bathrooms. Then it’s across the dorm campus to breakfast—hundreds of kids in regulation white jumpsuits, names embroidered on our lapels in case we forget. Not that I ever would:

Apprentice Kerr Flick
#540/187503

There’s drill practice at 0830. Hater Recognition lessons at 0945. Love Collective History from 1030 until 1300. More drills. More apps. By the time 2030 kicks around, we’re tired out and ready for the warm tickle of our stim-beds again. In between, it’s a case of learn-as-much-as-I-can and avoid Myk, Bez, and Fedge. I call them the Three Fists because that’s all they know how to use.

I don’t have to worry about them for too much longer, though. I’m not going to be in the Nursery Dorm forever. No way. One day, I will get so far away they can’t find me. One day, I’ll get out of here and fly all the way to Elite Academy.

Finding Taylor
(Love in Little River Novella)
By Raneé S. Clark
Contemporary Romance
ebook, 74 Pages
September 2020

When Gavin invites Taylor and her sister on an impromptu lunch, he doesn’t expect to find his soulmate. Like him Taylor loves exploring the world, but an offhand comment by Taylor’s sister about their roots in the small town of Little River worries him that pursuing a relationship with her might end up like all the others: him being pressured to give up the nomadic lifestyle he loves. Is the connection he feels with Taylor worth the risk of another broken heart?

Excerpt

Gavin headed down to the restaurant to meet Taylor. He stuffed his hands in his pockets as he walked down, trying to contain the excitement at seeing her again.

He arrived first and waved off the hostess’s offer to wait at the table, instead walking slowly around the lobby. He’d sat too much the last week anyway, not to mention the long flight from Rio.

“Gavin?”

He turned at the sound of Taylor’s voice, smiling as she hurried up to him. She hesitated long enough for him to note her bright yellow tank dress and flip-flops before she leaned forward and hugged him. He pulled her closer an instant later. The conversations they’d had every day melted any awkwardness that might have been between them.

“Our table is ready,” he said, keeping an arm around her waist as he turned to nod toward the hostess.

“Perfect. Did I keep you waiting?” She settled closer to him as he walked her back toward the restaurant. He liked the feel of his hand on her hip, her flowery scent light in the air around him now, her blonde hair brushing against his arm.

“Only a minute or two. It felt good to stretch my legs.”

“How long is the flight?” Now she slid her arm behind him, her fingers gripping the edge of his shirt.

“Almost twenty hours with layovers, but something I’m used to, of course. I swear I live half my life on planes.”

“Stop bragging.” She bumped him with her hip, and he laughed.

They reached their table, a small one on a wooden platform on the beach, the two chairs seated opposite each other. Taylor frowned at them before slipping from his embrace and sitting down. A gentle breeze blew by, and she tilted her head back, taking in a long breath.

“It’s wonderful. The ocean, the flowers, and the delicious food,” she said. “I’m glad I get to stay an extra couple days. It’s going to be hard enough to leave as it is.”

“There is something about a beach at sunset that just never gets old.” Gavin dropped into his own chair, only glancing at the menu before he’d already decided. Taylor had picked up hers and began poring over it, her sandaled feet tentatively sliding next to his. He slid his own closer, the feel of her skin against his leg making him ready to ditch dinner and head straight for the walk, where he might find a quiet space of beach and hold Taylor in his arms.

Dinner, thankfully, passed quickly, their conversation just as easy as it had been on the phone the last few days. It was natural to take her hand and help her up when they had finished, and then keep hold of it as they headed for the beach. Taylor slipped out of her flip-flops right away, holding them with her other hand as they walked.

She leaned her head against his shoulder. “It’s crazy how easy this is, right? Us?”

“Roxy did say we were soulmates.”

“I knew that from the minute you said you did freelancing so you could travel.”

“It’s sounds exciting at first, until I miss your birthday because I have a last minute meeting in Paris.” He stopped, not caring that they hadn’t really found a quiet place, that there were people scattered about on the beach still. He turned toward her, bringing his hands to her waist and looking down on her. They’d talked a lot about Gavin worrying that he wouldn’t find someone who understood his passion, that the wanderlust in his blood wouldn’t just evaporate someday when it was time to be responsible.

She hadn’t been afraid to admit that traveling and family didn’t come without complications, but she’d been insistent that a life where her children could experience all the things she’d grown up wishing for sounded fantastic. He wanted to look in her eyes now and see the same enthusiasm she’d expressed over the phone.

“Take me with you to Paris,” she said softly, running her hands up the front of his shirt and tilting her head back.

“What about the kids?” he asked, smiling as he leaned closer, making sure she saw the joke in his eyes.

“You’re moving fast, buddy. Sit back and enjoy this for a few minutes.” She moved her hands to the back of his head, pulling him down and meeting his lips with hers. They melted into each other, with their toes in the sand, and waves threatening to roll over their feet. And Gavin did just what he was told. He forgot about the future and what six months down the road might mean with Taylor, and he enjoyed the next several minutes. To their fullest.

A dying realm.
The ancient evil of the Droch-Shúil has been unleashed.
The Orchids have been silenced… but for how long?

Daegan, elite of the Ferrishyn warrior tribe of Faeries, is charged with a mission to find the Sol-lumieth, a mysterious new power that could change the fate of all in the realm of Alandria. But he is conflicted by his purpose, and he cannot trust the motives of those he serves. He has too many questions and they must be answered.

Kaeleigh, a girl abandoned as a small child just outside Missoula, Montana, is now 18. She is trying to discover who she is and where she belongs. In her heart, she feels she has family out there… somewhere. Desperate to unravel the mysteries of her past, she embarks on a journey that will forever change her along with her two best friends, Finn and Chel—who have secrets of their own.

All was silent again in his head, just in time for the whisperings of the wind to carry the last words he heard the Orchids speak, “They are coming for her.”

Instantly, his defenses were up. The hum of electricity skated across his skin; hairs on the back of his neck bristled, a feeling of danger he was accustomed to. This feeling, however, felt... wrong. Daegan jumped down out of the tree from the highest branch with ease. Drawing a knife sheathed at his wrist, he ran up the stairs to Kaeleigh’s apartment and without knocking and flung the door open.

“What the...?” Finn shouted as he grabbed Kaeleigh and shoved her behind him. At the same time Kaeleigh shouted, “Oh my god, Daegan!”

“We don’t have time for pleasantries or explanations. Others have come. I will not let harm come to her,” Daegan said as he strode into the room extending his knife.

Finn turned toward Daegan, keeping himself between Kaeleigh.

Kaeleigh gripped Finn’s arm from where she stood behind him. “Finn, stop this. Daegan has already proven he’s not here to hurt me.” She looked at Daegan. “Daegan, this is Finn.”

Finn, never taking his eyes off of Daegan, said with sarcasm, “You’re going to protect her with that little knife?”

Daegan stared intently at Finn, then with a small smirk he replied, “This knife has been through a lot, but no, not just this...” He slipped out from under his other sleeve a second knife. He twirled them both around effortlessly and fluidly in his hands almost like a choreographed performance. “If those don’t work, I also have this…” From where it must have been sheathed under his jacket at his back, he reverently pulled out a very wickedly dangerous-looking sword with some kind of runes etched into the hilt. Lethal, magnificent, and otherworldly were the only words to describe what was before them.

Finn took in the weaponry, a glint in his eyes, nodding his approval. He pulled out his own knife—which was really more of a short sword—that had been sheathed inconspicuously under his pant leg. Daegan nodded to Finn and took his position on the opposite side of Kaeleigh. Kaeleigh stood in shock, her mouth agape.

“Finn, why on earth have you been hiding a knife like that?” she asked. Kaeleigh didn’t believe she was truly in danger. They are totally overreacting. They have to be.

“And who is ‘coming for me’?” She shot a look at Daegan, but Finn shushed her and pushed her behind him again. For the first time in a very long time, Finn could feel the darkness in others from the other realm. His realm. It had been too long. Drawing his knife out in front of him, Finn stiffened. “They’re here,” he whispered.
