12 Days of Clean Romance: Author Delaney Cameron, Sale & Giveaway

The Gift of Love by Delaney Cameron

Leah didn’t plan to still be searching for love so late in her twenties. Her looks almost guarantee her success with the opposite sex, but quantity doesn’t mean quality. Good thing she’s got a great career to fall back on. The only dark cloud on that particular horizon is the enigmatic Dr. Levy, the man she’s come to think of as a permanent thorn in her side. Brilliant and handsome he most certainly is, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that he’s also stern, impatient, and bad-tempered. Oddly enough, it isn’t their mostly negative encounters that linger in her mind. Instead it’s the sadness she glimpses from time to time in his face. There’s no explanation for why she’s so bothered by this, nor can she imagine a situation where she’ll be in a position to discover the cause of his silent misery. All of which means she’s wasting her time. If anyone can take care of himself, it’s Dr. Levy. Stratton had only been at Hutchison Clinic a short time before he heard about the beautiful nurse on the second floor. In his usual skeptical fashion he discounted the gossip until he saw Leah for himself. He had no problem admitting that the reports of her beauty hadn’t been exaggerated, but appreciation was as far as he was prepared to go. Love, romance and the so-called happily-ever-after only exist in the movies. Putting your happiness in someone else’s hands is just begging to be hurt. He has a monthly alimony payment to prove it. Getting his family and friends to understand his preference for bachelorhood isn’t so easy. While he appreciates their concern, he doesn’t need the complication of something with such overwhelming odds of failure. One ex-wife is enough for any man.

Author's Note: Although this book is a romance novel, it deals with loss and grief. If you're sensitive to these issues, this might not be the book for you.

The salad course had just been served when Leah became aware of movement behind her. She turned her head to see what was going on and nearly dropped the dinner roll she’d been in the act of buttering. Under her astonished gaze, Dr. Levy sat down in the empty seat beside her.
After thanking the waitress for a menu and asking for coffee, he turned to Leah and smiled. “Hello, again. If I wasn’t so sure you don’t like me, I’d begin to think you’re following me.”

This provocative greeting broke the spell she’d fallen under. “I was here first, so the person doing the following is you.”

“Don’t confuse the issue with facts.” He opened the menu and ran his eyes down the offerings. “This place has a little of everything, doesn’t it? What did you get?”

“Grilled shrimp with a baked sweet potato and Caesar salad.”

“Sounds good. I think I’ll get that, too.”

As if on cue, the waitress arrived with his coffee and took his order. Leah used the time to finish buttering her roll and quiet her suddenly jangled nerves. In the three weeks since Dr. Levy had given her a ride during that awful trip to Lake Oconee, she’d avoided going anywhere near his area of the clinic. This kind of behavior was unusual for her, but no one likes being caught in an embarrassing situation by someone who already thinks badly of them.

And now, here they were again, thrown together by forces outside her control and which no one could have foreseen. Escape was impossible. Her only choice was to make the best of it. While she was doing that, she might as well satisfy her curiosity about his presence here. They had to talk about something; it might as well be that. Besides, it was always better to go on the offensive in situations like this.

“How do you know Evangeline and Cecil, Dr. Levy?”

He smiled as he stirred cream into his coffee. “The name is Stratton. Save Dr. Levy for work. I don’t know Evangeline at all. I’m one of Cecil’s numerous cousins. What about you?”

She didn’t hear much of what he said after the word Stratton. It was an unusual name, but it suited him somehow. As for calling him by it, that was something else entirely. They weren’t (and would probably never be) on those kind of terms. She realized he was waiting for an answer and blushed slightly. “Evangeline and I met in middle school. Her family moved to South Carolina during our senior year. She was thrilled when I took the job in Myrtle Beach.”

“It seems I’m going to be more than a wedding guest tomorrow. Cecil just asked if I could fill in for one of the groomsmen.”

Which meant he’d be the one walking her down the aisle. Could things get any stranger? “It’s nice of you to do it on such short notice.”

He shrugged. “I don’t mind. If we’d known ahead of time that we were both coming this way, we could have ridden together.”

Leah was saved having to come up with a response to this startling remark by the arrival of the main course. In truth, she was having trouble reconciling this sociable man with the somewhat reserved and often-times stern physician she knew from the clinic. Which one was the real Stratton?

She almost jumped out of her skin when she heard his voice close to her ear.

“What are you doing after this thing is over?”

“I’m going back to Evangeline’s house. All the bridesmaids are staying there.”

“It’s still early. Would you be interested in taking a drive?”

Taking a drive? With him? Now things were just starting to get weird.

When she didn’t say anything, a gleam appeared in his eyes. “It’s okay to refuse, Leah. You won’t hurt my feelings.”

“It’s not that I don’t want to go; I’m just…” She stopped, trying to think of a nicer word than flabbergasted or amazed. “I’m surprised. Our acquaintance has had some…rocky moments.”

He speared one of his shrimp and doused it in melted butter. “Then it’s about time we did something to change that.”

“Is it?”

“Of course. First or even second impressions aren’t always the right ones.”

“How about third or fourth?” she couldn’t resist asking.

He nodded. “Those, too. Don’t you think we owe it to ourselves and each other to find out how wrong or right we were?”

I guess so, and we probably won’t have a better opportunity than this.”

“I agree.”

“In that case, I’ll be happy to go for a drive with you.”

I loved this book! It has every element that makes for a fantastic read. It pulls you into the lives of the characters and you laugh with them, cry with them, hurt with them, and rejoice with them. It has passion and yet it is clean....loved it!

I confess I almost never leave reviews. This series, and in particular this book, deserves special treatment. If you enjoy well-crafted stories with depth and compassion, you owe yourself the gift of reading this series. The characters are people I would like to meet, and their lives seem genuine rather than contrived as is common in romance novels.

So many authors ‘attempt’ to write romance, but Delaney has delivered a truly well done book. The story is so well written you feel like it’s real with characters that come alive. The heartache, loss, laughs and joy will capture emotion that’s not always believable, but in this story I felt all that emotion. On top of that I can recall no grammatical or editing errors. That’s another rare treat. Without revealing the story line I will only say that there are major life changing events which are woven so well into this single book you don’t realize it's all happening until you’ve finished the book and still want more.

Author Delaney Cameron

I'm a Georgia girl at heart if not by birth. I love to read, watch college football, and spend time with my husband. I'm a hopeless romantic so there will always be a happily ever after in my stories. I also like to write about second chances because love doesn't always work out the first time. My books are sweet romances set in both contemporary and regency settings featuring stories about the journey to love, from that first meeting to the point where two people know their hearts are no longer their own. My characters aren't perfect. They make mistakes and have faults like the rest of us. They learn the sometimes painful truth that the path to love isn't always smooth, but it's a road worth traveling.

HE'S COMING FOR THEM. AND THE KINGDOM.

Haegan and Kaelyria Celahar are royal heirs of the Nine Kingdoms, but Haegan is physically crippled. What chance does he have against Poired Dyrth, the greatest enemy the kingdom has ever faced, who wields fire with a power none can match?

Their only hope is forbidden: Kaelyria must transfer her fire-harnessing abilities to Haegan. When she does it comes with a terrible price: Haegan's disability is healed, but only by being transferred to Kaelyria. This act unleashes their father-king's wrath.

Haegan must flee the kingdom alone with two impossible tasks: Find a cure for Kaelyria and stop the coming war with the omnipotent Poired Dyrth.

Interview with the Haegan Celahar

1. Prince Haegan, tell me the most interesting thing about you.

The most interesting thing? I suppose that I have endured these last ten years on a feather mattress without the use of my body and that my ears burned by the ramblings of an aged accelerant. All thanks to an enemy determined to crumble House Celahar and the Nine Kingdoms.

2. What do you do for fun?

Flames. This query feels like a jest. The most fun a person in my situation can have is having an intellectual duel with my aged tutor and guardian. Make not the mistake that because he is old, he is slow. Sir Gwogh has one of the keenest minds in all the Nine Kingdoms.

3. What are you afraid of most in life?

My greatest fear is yet again failing those I love most. I failed my father when I lost the use of my body and the Flames. I fear my father will not have the warrior he needs to defend the Nine against our fierce enemy, Poired Dyrth.

4. Do you read books? If so, what is your favorite type of book?

Books have been my life. The Histories. The Parchments. The Legacies. And all stories put to quill and parchment, for without the use of my legs, I have travelled across all Primar through books and stories. But dare I confess the Histories were my favorite? Reading about my ancestors and their feats, wielding the Flames at the behest of Abiassa Herself!

5. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would walk. And run. And join my father’s elite fighters, the Valor Guard. But ‘tis a fool’s fancy to think of things. It only serves to depress and distract. I will focus on what I can accomplish—learning from the Histories and Legacies, to someday be wise counsel for my sister’s rule.

6. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?

A pet? What need would I have for a pet? I would not wish the cold and cloudy windows of my prison on my enemies, so I would not task an innocent to endure such than as soon relegate my enemy to the cold chambers and cloudy windows I endure such misery.

7. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

To the moment I was poisoned. I would toss aside my plate. Shatter my glass. I’d stay strong. Be the son my father wanted and the prince kingdom needed.

Guest Post & Giveaway: The Songs That Brought Me Back by Mylissa Demeyere

https://amzn.to/2UqnZdg

The Songs That Brought Me Back

Have you ever made a mistake? One so monumental you lost everything? I did, and I hate myself for it! All I want to do is close my eyes, and let the darkness consume me. Make it all go away. The end.

Ainsley is drowning in the depth of her despair. One wrong decision left her alone, with only regret as her constant companion. To escape it all, she makes another choice. One she hopes will end everything. Instead, she’s thrown into a whole new world filled with opportunities she doesn’t believe she deserves. Ethan gives the appearance of breezing through life. But underneath his bright facade, he’s scarred by loss. When fate leads him into Ainsley’s world at the exact moment she needs someone the most, he can’t ignore the chance to right the wrongs of his past. Ainsley and Ethan will struggle to help each other heal and start anew. They’ll learn that the secret to conquering their pain lies within their power, if only they can do it together. Always together.

Sometimes the ending is really the beginning.

Why I wrote Ainsley's story (from Mylissa Demeyere)

Did you know that every forty seconds 1 person dies due to suicide? That’s close to 800,000 worldwide, each year. There are indications that for each adult who dies of suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide. That’s an estimate of 16,000,000 attempted suicides worldwide amongst adults. (Source: The World Health Organization).

Five days shy of my sixteenth birthday, my father’s body was found after he had killed himself. Needless to say, it wasn’t the sweet sixteen it could have been.

That event had quite an impact on my life and how I decided to face the challenges I meet.

When I wrote The Songs of You and Me, I delved into Jackson’s past. He got to tell his side of how Ainsley’s choices affected him. I never felt I could leave her tale untold. Each story always has at least two sides to it.

Why does a person make such horrible choices as Ainsley did? What drives them to such selfishness? And does a person like Ainsley have it in her to redeem herself?

My dad made the choice not to fight and right the wrongs in his life. It not only ended his life; it impacted many other lives.

Ainsley’s story is my way of showing you what can happen when people who make mistakes decide to try and do better. Because everyone deserves a second chance to right the wrong and start over again.

This is Ainsley’s story of what happens when you choose to not give up.

I hope that whomever reads this, will realize that we all, at one point in our life need and deserve second chances. When we take those chances, and turn our lives around, miracles can happen. I have seen it firsthand and the stories that follow are beautiful. Not perfect, but definitely worth living.
Even when life seems dark, lost, and like there is no other way than ending it, there is ALWAYS another option.

To everyone who has ever felt like there was never another way, this story is for you. My dad didn’t take the other way, but I hope you will find help. Life isn’t always perfect, but it is a wonderful gift. Definitely worth fighting for.

12 Days of Clean Romance: Author Melissa McClone & Giveaway

His Christmas Wish by Melissa McClone

Carly Bishop loved Christmas…until tragedy struck.

Distraught and grief-stricken over the deaths of her fiancé and brother, she left Hood Hamlet and her Christmas spirit behind, to start over somewhere new. But now, six years later, her family needs her. Carly returns home to face her past and give her niece and nephew the best Christmas ever. Burdened with guilt, Jake Porter believes he could have saved his two friends on that fateful day and kept Carly from experiencing such a heart-wrenching loss. When she arrives in town, Jake wants to make amends so they can both finally move forward with their lives. As Jake helps Carly experience the magic of Christmas so she'll embrace the holiday again, will he also be able to open her heart to something else she’d given up on…love?

Jake forced himself not to stare. Drool. He reached for a knife.

She looked good. Okay, hot. Better than he remembered.

The cold temperature outside brought a natural color to her cheeks. Thick lashes, ones she’d had since she was younger, framed expressive hazel eyes that no longer held the optimistic promise of tomorrow, but hinted at new depths he hadn’t seen before. Those pink full lips smiling at him made him think about kisses. And the one time he should have kissed her, but instead he’d hesitated and lost her. Not that he needed kisses now. A taste of those glossed lips, simply a nibble, was all he wanted, but that wouldn’t be a smart move.

Kissing her would be downright stupid.

As he sliced the apple, the knife slammed against the cutting board.

“Be careful.” Carly neatly placed cheese and crackers on a plate. “You don’t want to lose a finger.”

Right now, he was more worried about losing his heart.

Insane.

His heart was off-limits, especially to a woman who was the only person aside from his father to call him Jacob and who’d left town six years ago never to return until now. Okay, not exactly true. She hadn’t been gone six years. Five years, seven months, and twenty-eight days, if he wanted to be exact. Not that he’d been counting.

Granted, she’d had her reasons. Good ones. But that hadn’t made her leaving any easier. Which reminded him. She wasn’t here to stay. Hannah had mentioned Carly was staying a little over two weeks. Long enough to turn everyone’s life upside down, including his. He wanted no part of it. No part of her.

Jake cut another piece of apple. This time, he didn’t put as much pressure on the knife.

Brenna James wants three things for her sixteenth birthday: to find her history notes before the test, to have her mother return from her business trip, and to stop creating fire with her bare hands.

Yeah, that’s so not happening. Unfortunately.

When Brenna learns her mother is missing in an alternate reality called Linneah, she travels through a portal to find her. But Brenna’s arrival in Linneah begins the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy, including a royal murder and the theft of Linneah’s most powerful relic: the Sacred Veil.

Unwilling yet left with no other choice, Brenna and her new friend Baldwin pursue the thief into the dangerous woods of Silvastamen and beyond. Exactly what Brenna wanted to do for her sixteenth birthday. When they spy an army marching toward Linneah, Brenna is horrified. Can she find the veil, save her mother, and warn Linneah in time?

Excerpt

At the top of the stairs, a rush of air carrying the scent of wood smoke, moist earth, and sea salt filled my nostrils. On my left, a door to a small balcony stood ajar, letting in the fresh night air. A guy about my age stood near the balcony’s iron railing, his dark head bowed. He was seriously hot, his profile lit by the hallway torches. Dark, mussed hair, square jaw, and a straight nose—but the solemn set to his mouth drew me.

Was he okay? I could—you know what? None of my business. I started to turn away.

My plan to continue to my room vanished when I saw the knife clenched in his hand. He studied it, tracing the blade, fingering the grip. That couldn’t be good. Was he going to stab someone? Stab himself? He didn’t look like a criminal—but then you could never tell. Sometimes the creepers were the gorgeous ones, like this guy. The seriousness of the situation gave me courage. I stepped onto the balcony, holding the king’s stationery box like a shield.

“Hey, how’s it going?” I got ready to run in case he turned the wicked-sharp knife on me.

With a start, he slipped his hands behind his back.

“Nice knife you have there.”

His jaw tightened, and he shot me a glare. “I prefer to be alone.”

“Yeah, good luck with that.”

Heaving a sigh, he gazed at the shadowed scenery. From opposite sides of the horizon, two bright, glowing bands bisected the night sky. The twinkling stars gleamed through the rings before scattering to meet the shadowed black cliffs in the distance. Nearer the castle, the tiny glimmers of the surrounding city glittered, pinpricks of light.

“Wow. That’s incredible.” I pointed to the shining display. The whole scene was wonderfully romantic, but here I was, stuck with a knife-wielding weirdo. Really cute, but still a weirdo.

“The Petrus Rings. They encircle the planet.” Several beats of silence passed before he spoke again. “You are not going to leave me alone, are you?”

“No, probably not. I don’t want you slitting your throat or jumping off this balcony. Or both.” I paused. “Though that might be a little difficult to do at the same time.”

A chuckle escaped him. “I am not intending to harm myself.”

“Good. Then put the knife away, and we’ll all feel better.”

Slipping it into the sheath at his waist, he held up his hands. “Better?”

“Yes, thanks.”

His biceps flexed when he crossed his arms and leaned against the iron railing, his eyes attentive. “My name is Baldwin, and I am guessing you are one of the new visitors. The whole town is talking about your arrival.”

I startled, my eyes wide. “Why?”

“It is always an event when strangers visit, but your entrance was epic.”

Great. In the dim light, maybe he wouldn’t notice my blush. “I’m Brenna.”

(The Kingmakers' War #1)
By Kate Avery Ellison
YA Fantasy
Paperback & ebook, 218 Pages
October 12th 2014

Bestselling Amazon author of The Frost Chronicles, Kate Avery Ellison, delivers a fantasy novel packed with clever betrayals, surprising twists, and many moments of delicious vindication for its scrappy heroine. This is a must-read for fans of Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass, Maria V. Snyder’s Poison Study, Megan Whalen Turner's The Thief, and Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes.

This is the clever, heartbreaking, intricate YA fantasy you've always wanted to read.

Briand Varryda has always been too clever for her own good. She’s quick with knives and even quicker with cards. She can scramble up a castle wall. She can ride a bad-tempered stallion with her arms tied behind her back.

But it’s never been enough. She’s useless in the eyes of everyone on her uncle’s estate. A guttersnipe. An orphan. An annoyance. Even Kael, the handsome, enigmatic steward of her uncle who has protected her from her uncle’s wrath too many times already, sees her as nothing but trouble to him.

But when Briand drinks of vial of poisoned venom that grants the drinker the power to control dragons, she becomes the opposite of useless.

She becomes the one thing that might win the war.

Kael, she quickly discovers, is a Monarchist spy. Leader of a band of rebels. About to embark on a dangerous mission. And he and his crew desperately need Briand’s new skills.

Nobody is happy about the situation, least of all Briand, but she doesn’t have a choice. Terrifying magic users called Seekers are now hunting her and her powers. She is plunged into a world of danger, betrayal, and secrets. A world in which friends turn into traitors. A world in which she might be falling for Kael. A world in which she is determined to prove that she is not useless.

Briand is going to need all her cleverness to survive.

Author Interview

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

The part where I am daydreaming and brainstorming about the fantastical worlds that my stories are set in. My Frost Chronicles series had one of my favorite settings of all the stories I’ve written—a harsh, icy landscape of snow and forest, with monsters that came out only at night and were repelled by these strange blue flowers that bloomed even in the snow. It’s like getting to be a kid again when I am imagining what the story’s setting and world will be like. I love it.

What’s your least-favorite part of the writing process?

I loathe writing the end of a book. I don’t know why, but I find that final bit of the process excruciating. I guess I just don’t like ending things. I usually cope with chocolate and donuts.

What books have you read and loved lately?

I just finished The Cruel Prince by Holly Black and I adored it. Also, I recently devoured, and I mean devoured, Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. Don’t let the inspirational fiction-y title deter you. It’s a weird, beautiful, twisted fantasy and I am obsessed with it.

Best news you’ve heard all day?

I just read online that Disney is making a show about Loki for their new streaming site. And it will be played by Tom Hiddleston. Disney, take my money. Take all my money right now. Also, a record number of women were elected to Congress in the midterm elections, which is awesome.

What’s your favorite month and why is it October?

Seriously, I feel like we should just all accept the fact that October is objectively the best month of the year. It’s got fall. It’s got crisp mornings and blustery afternoons and that magical slant of the sunlight as the days get shorter. It’s got riots of color in the changing leaves. It’s got Halloween and hayrides and haunted houses. Anne Shirley didn’t want to live in a world without Octobers and neither do I. As a runner-up, I do like December despite the hectic insanity of the holidays.

Who is your ideal reader of your books?

My ideal reader is someone who loves young adult fantasy with strong and emotionally resilient heroines, quirky side characters, a bit of witty banter, and at least one or two unexpected twists or reveals. They might also be fans of Robin Mckinley, Megan Whalen Turner, Holly Black, Melina Marchetta, or Susan Ee.
