Dee Henderson - "Betrayed"

After serving six years of a twenty-year sentence for a murder she didn't commit, Janelle Roberts is finally freed. But the truth is still waiting to be discovered, and a murderer is still at large. Janelle needs to be somewhere safe with someone she can trust. She may not survive another act of treachery.

Dani Pettrey - "Deadly Isle"

Tennyson Kent is trapped on the isolated island of her childhood by a storm surge, and she is shocked when the typically idyllic community turns into the hunting grounds of a murderer. Cut off from any help from the mainland, will she and first love Callen Frost be able to identify and stop a killer before they become the next victims?

Lynette Eason - "Code of Ethics"

When Detective Isaac Martinez lands in the ER with a gunshot wound, he pulls through thanks to trauma surgeon Ruthie St. John. But as the witness to a crime and possible corruption, Martinez is at risk from someone intent on silencing him--and those around him--forever. When he barely survives another attack while recovering, both he and Ruthie must flee, trying to outrun deadly killers while locating the evidence they need to end the danger.

From Code of Ethics by Lynette Eason

Ruthie slid the chart back into its slot and slipped down the hall to room four. She pushed open the door and came to an abrupt halt. A young man dressed in green scrubs held a syringe, ready to push it into her patient’s IV. “Excuse me. Who are you?”
The person turned and shot her a small smile. “I’m the new night nurse. I was just getting ready to give Mr. Martinez here his medicine.”
“I just read his chart. He’s already had it.”
But the person had already turned back to the port. He inserted the needle.
Ruthie gasped. “I’m his doctor and I said stop!”
He continued to ignore her. Fear for the man in the bed overrode anything else. She lunged forward and shoved the nurse away. He stumbled backward with a surprised cry while the syringe fell from the port and tumbled to the floor.
He shot to his feet. His dark eyes glittered, menace emanating from him. Chills enveloped Ruthie. He was no nurse. He sprang at her and wrapped his fingers around her throat.
She let out a scream before his grip tightened and cut her air off.
Realization finally hit.
This man was here to kill her patient.
But he was going to do his best to kill her first.

****

Isaac woke at the sound of the scream. Instinct had him reaching for his weapon only to find his hand flailing uselessly at his side. Sounds of a scuffle reached him and he tried to speak. A crash sounded. Another scream.
“What’s going on in here?”
A curse.
Then scrambling, running footsteps.
“Security! And I need a doctor! Ruthie, are you okay?”
Isaac worked himself into a sitting position, hating the weakness and the flashes of pain. The door opened and several hospital workers rushed in.
“Ruthie!”
Isaac looked down to see a woman on the floor and another woman squatting in front of her. “Hey.”
The first woman, dressed in street clothes, scrambled to her feet and focused on him. “You need to lay back down. You don’t want to move wrong and tear that wound open.” She sounded hoarse.
He waved a hand. “I’m fine. What happened?”
“You’re not fine, you’ve been shot. And had surgery. Don’t mess up my work.” She touched the bandage on his shoulder. “No blood, that’s good. How do you feel?”
“Like I’ve been shot. Who are you?”
She jolted and snapped her gaze up to meet his.
And that’s when he noticed the red marks that would soon turn to bruises. He blinked and reached out to stroke the side of her neck. She flinched away. “Who choked you, and why?”
“I’m Dr. Ruthie St. John, the surgeon who removed the bullet in your shoulder earlier today. As for who tried to choke me, I’m not sure. But he was trying to jam this into your IV.” She held up a syringe.

Synopsis

The day of her parents’ garden party dawns bright as Lydia Prescott eagerly anticipates a marriage proposal from a handsome and wealthy plantation owner. The lovely debutante plans to steal a moment away with her beau, but her plans go terribly awry. Instead of her intended, she is joined by a stranger—the largest man she’s ever laid eyes on. And it is clear Jacob Steele is there for reasons far more sober than the party. With British raids erupting all around them, it is his job to reassure plantation owners of their safety. In reality, however, Jacob is an espionage agent, and the truth is dire: America is on the verge of invasion by the British. Blissfully unaware of the danger surrounding her, Lydia basks in the glow of her recent engagement. But her joy is short-lived—a surprise British attack results in a devastating wound, and her plans for the future are shattered. Lost in her devastation, Lydia could never dream that Jacob, that giant of a man she met so briefly, would prove to be her saving grace. And with a war raging around them, she may be called upon to save him too.

My Review

I loved learning details about the War of 1812 from a more personal perspective, which is one reason I enjoy historical fiction. This author in particular is gifted at exposing me to times, locations, or events that I know little about, and enlarging my perspective of the world and the people in it. The danger, harsh circumstances, and struggles kept me turning the pages, and the gentle romance that grew between Lydia and Jacob tempered the heavier aspects of the plot. Lydia undergoes a definite change from the beginning of the book, and I admired the way her compassion for others grew into a selfless nature. The story is also told from Jacob's perspective, and he was an intriguing character with all the qualities I look for in a hero- strong and brave, yet vulnerable in ways not always seen at first. I loved the feeling of patriotism and devotion to a cause that is larger than themselves. Definitely a book that will be enjoyed and loved by fans of historical fiction and sweet romance.

Falling in Love Event: Author Elizabeth Johns, Sale, & Giveaway

Through the Fire: A Traditional Regency Romance by Elizabeth Johns

When two people have walked through fire, can love bring the healing and help they need? Spurned by love, Lady Margaux Winslow, daughter of the Marquess of Ashbury, has no use for the other eligible gentlemen of London. Despite her beauty, her sharp tongue soon earns her a reputation as a dragon. Convincing her parents to let her retreat to their Scottish estate, a home for abandoned young women, Margaux feels she can do something meaningful with her life. At their wits' end, her parents believe a few months in seclusion will teach her to appreciate her privileged existence, and accept the next gentleman of worth who offers for her. Margaux has no plans to yield. But neither she nor her parents bargain for the proximity of the gorgeous, blue-eyed Scotsman on the neighbouring estate. Gavin Craig, content with his life as a country doctor, is unexpectedly thrust into the world of aristocratic society after the accidental deaths of his brother and nephews. With all the duties his new title entails, and his adoption of three orphans, Gavin desperately needs a wife. She should preferably a lady, trained since birth to manage a noble house, servants and family. His former disdain for a marriage of convenience has been rapidly overcome by the colossal task of learning to run a large Scottish barony. One lovely candidate is right next door … except that she's inexplicably determined to be a spinster…

Gavin looked at the letter in his hand in utter disbelief. His heart was tearing in two. His brother, wife, and children had been killed when their carriage had slipped down the side of a cliff.
“This canna be true.” He shook his head and fought back tears.
“I am afraid it is, my lord.”
“My lord? No. I doona wish for it. I’m a simple country doctor. I have a humble life and practice here.”
“I am terribly sorry for your loss, my lord. But you are, in fact, the eleventh Baron Craig now, and thus have some rather large holdings that are your responsibility.”
“This was not supposed to happen. Iain had three strapping young lads!”
The solicitor looked grave. “Perhaps, my lord, it would be best for you to return to Castle Craig and see for yourself.”
The solicitor was met with a blank stare from a set of startling blue eyes; a look that was common to those who had been met with grievous news, but who had not yet assimilated the ensuing change in circumstances.
“Verra well. I will join you there as soon as I have made arrangements.”
Gavin went through the motions of closing up his house and seeing his practice into the capable hands of his apprentice, a graduate of Lord Easton’s school. Of late, Gavin had taken many trips into England to the school in Sussex and had toyed with joining it as an instructor on a full-time basis, but he had never been able to cut ties with Scotland. How would he practice medicine as Lord Craig? He would have to find a way, while at the same time doing his best to carry on with his brother’s works in Parliament.
Gavin had seen more death than most, but he had not been prepared for the loss of his brother, or of Iain’s wife and children. They had been the last family he’d had left. He had never before given a thought to running the large Castle Craig estate, and hoped desperately that his brother had appointed a trustworthy steward.
His carriage was loaded with immediate necessities. His servants would send the rest of his belongings with those of his staff who wished to join him at the new residence. He had one final stop before setting off to bury his brother and begin his new life.
~*~
“What are you pondering, mon chere?” Margaux heard her mother ask.
“Very little, Maman,” she remarked, as they sat darning socks for some of the children. Her parents had remained with her, hopeful to change her mind.
“We are having a guest for dinner tonight. Someone interested in contributing to the orphans.”
“Très bien,” she said absent-mindedly. Guests were a normal occurrence with her parents.
“You should wear the emerald satin—bring some colour to your face, non?”
“If you wish, Maman.” Margaux cared little for what she wore these days.
“Allons y.” Lady Ashbury stood and directed her daughter to do the same. “I will see you at dinner.”
Lady Margaux went through the motions of dressing. Her maid arranged her hair in a manner worthy of a ball, she noticed. She had to admit she had been experiencing a mild case of the dismals. Once she established a routine here she would come out of it, she was certain. She had never been one to sulk, but she needed to find something useful to occupy her time. No, she corrected her thoughts. To make a new life.
She made her way downstairs, determined to be more cheerful. If she could only convince her parents she was happy here, then they would be satisfied she was content.
“Ah, there she is now, Lord Craig,” Lord Ashbury said as he saw her.
“Dr. Craig?” Margaux said, stunned as she met the eyes of the handsome doctor who had been enamoured of Lady Beatrice.

Author Elizabeth Johns

National bestselling author Elizabeth Johns was first an avid reader, though she was a reluctant convert. It was Jane Austen’s clever wit and unique turn of phrase that hooked Johns when she was “forced” to read Pride and Prejudice for a school assignment. She began writing when she ran out of her favorite author’s books and decided to try her hand at crafting a Regency romance novel. Her journey into publishing began with the release of Surrender the Past, book one of the Loring-Abbott Series. Johns makes no pretensions to Austen’s wit but hopes readers will perhaps laugh and find some enjoyment in her writing. Johns attributes much of her inspiration to her mother, a retired English teacher. During their last summer together, Johns would sit on the porch swing and read her stories to her mother, who encouraged her to continue writing. Busy with multiple careers, including a professional job in the medical field, author and mother of small children, Johns squeezes in time for reading whenever possible.
