Synopsis

Independent-minded women are considered highly unsuitable in Kate Donahue’s wealthy Long Island society. Yes, Kate would lead a proper life should she marry, but her dream of practicing medicine would surely be thwarted by her domineering fiancé. To follow her dream, she must take dramatic measures. So when she reads a newspaper ad seeking a qualified small-town physician, Kate embarks on a new life in the Wild West.

Upon her arrival in the rugged settlement of Craig, Colorado, Kate is disappointed to discover that even in the West, no one wants a woman doctor. As she struggles to establish her practice, she is kept busy fending off the unwanted attentions of a local rancher, a man unnervingly reminiscent of the ex-fiancé she left behind in New York. Romantic entanglements are the last thing on Kate’s mind. That is, until she meets Lucas McCurdy, an Irish immigrant with whom she feels an undeniable connection. But when their relationship inflames a dangerous land battle, Kate and Lucas find themselves defenseless in a lawless town—a perilous position that may cost them everything.

My Review

I enjoyed this story of strong women surviving in the Old West. Kate shows gumption and fortitude when she abandons her high society parents and fiancé and travels to Colorado so she can practice medicine and provide doctoring services to a new boomtown. I admired that she followed her heart and dream in spite of the difficulties. There is a variety of characters in the townspeople and ranchers she comes across, and I especially liked how she warmed to the women and wanted to help them improve their situations. Lucas is also a great character with his warmth and twinkle in his eye, but for some reason I had a hard time picturing him at first. He and Kate definitely have chemistry and it was sweet to watch their relationship slowly develop. I loved the setting and experiencing it through the eyes of a pioneer.

Review: Troubled Waters by Susan May Warren

Book Four in the Montana Rescue series

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.bookdepository.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Billionaire Ian Shaw can have everything he wants--except a happy ending. Or at least that's what it feels like with his fortune recently liquidated, his niece, Esme, still missing, and the woman he loves refusing to speak to him. In fact, he doubts she would date him even if they were stranded on a deserted island.

Despite her love for Ian, Sierra Rose knows he has no room in his life for her as long as the mystery of his missing niece goes unsolved. The only problem is, Sierra has solved it, but a promise to Esme to keep her whereabouts secret has made it impossible to be around Ian.

When the PEAK chopper is damaged and Sierra lacks the funds to repair it, Ian offers a fundraising junket for large donors on his yacht in the Caribbean. But the three-day excursion turns into a nightmare when a rogue wave cripples the yacht and sends the passengers overboard. Shaken up and soaked to the bone, Ian finally has a chance to test his theory when he and Sierra do indeed find themselves washed up on a strange, empty shore.

It will take guts and gumption for the PEAK team to rescue the duo. But it will take a miracle to rescue Ian and Sierra's relationship.

My Review

So. Much. Angst. I loved that Sierra and Ian finally got their happy ending! It was in the prequel novella that their relationship was introduced and they have had ups and downs in the three books since. They have definitely been put through the wringer, and Troubled Waters is no exception. Their feelings are strong yet they haven't communicated with each other in a year or so, and building trust again is awkward and painful. I liked their experiences on the island since their guard and walls were finally down and they relied on each other for strength and support, including faith.

The other relationship this book focused on was Jess and Pete's, another one that has spanned across the last couple books... and still doesn't get completely resolved, although they made some headway in communication. I think this book was bogged down a bit by the relationship drama because these two couples have so much time lapsing between their hot and cold phases. The first three books have a relationship introduced and resolved with a HEA (happily-ever-after) within their pages, so in comparison this one felt different. Also with the main emergency and rescue happening in tropical waters instead of the mountains gave it a different vibe. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since switching up the setting brings variety, but I do prefer the mountains and seeing the PEAK team in their element. Overall, a crazy adventure and plenty of romance! I love this series and can't wait for more!

Synopsis

When Deputy Sam Brooks commits to something, nothing can sway him--not just on the job as liaison between the Mercy Falls sheriff's department and PEAK Rescue, but in his private life. He's the one who stuck around to take care of his mother after his father's accidental death. And he's the one--perhaps the only one--who believes Sierra Rose is the perfect girl for him. Safe, practical, and organized, she's nothing like her hippie, impulsive, bleeding heart sister, Willow.

Willow, however, has been in love with Sam Brooks for as long as she can remember. But she wants her sister to have a happy ending. Besides, Willow has other things to focus on--namely, nabbing the job as youth pastor for her small-town church. Best thing for her to do is to purge Sam from her heart.

Neither can predict the events that will bring them together in a fight for their lives in the forbidding wilderness of Glacier National Park. Stranded, injured, and with the winter weather closing in, Sam and Willow will have to work together to save a crew of terrified teenagers. As they fight to survive, they might just discover a new hope for love.

Review: Delilah's Desserts by Melanie Jacobson, Heather B. Moore, Julie Wright

Heidi Reads... Delilah's Desserts by Melanie Jacobson, Heather B. Moore, Julie Wright

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Tangerine Street is a must-see tourist stop with a colorful mix of one-of-a-kind boutiques, unique restaurants, eclectic museums, quaint bookstores, and exclusive bed-and-breakfasts. Delilah's Desserts, situated in the middle of this charming collection of shops and cafés on Tangerine Street, is a bakery that offers a different variety of desserts each day. The emotions that Delilah bakes into these desserts have a strange effect on customers, sometimes altering the course of their lives . . .

My Review

I love the Tangerine Street Romance series! There is a special vibe in Seashell Beach- relaxed and yet busy with the small businesses that thrive there. In this collection of stories we get to meet Delilah, the owner of the bakery, Roxy, the local artist/muralist, and KC, a vegan author. It was easy to get to know and like the characters and their stories were interesting. I loved the idea that Delilah not only baked whatever desserts matched her mood, but hat she released her emotions into them. My favorite story was Roxy's, because she is an artist and introvert, and her individuality and tell-it-like-it-is demeanor attracts Mark, who is attempting a year-long dating hiatus. They had great chemistry and I loved their vulnerability with each other. KC is a vegan who indulges in a cupcake from the bakery once a month as a ritual, and the connection she makes with a magazine journalist is threatened when he suspects her of being a fraud. Each of the stories has a common thread with the bakery but also the theme of forgiveness. An enjoyable addition to the series!
