Synopsis

Captain Robert Wilkins has never aspired to grandeur. So when the returned war hero unexpectedly inherits the vast estate of Cattersley from his great-aunt, he feels woefully inadequate in his new role. Out of place in his lavish surroundings, his first glimmer of hope comes when he happens upon a lovely trespasser in his gardens.

Words have never come easily for Abigail Rutherford, and she prefers the solitude of exploring the gardens at the neighboring country estate to engaging in uncomfortable conversation. But when she unexpectedly encounters Captain Robert Wilkins in her place of solace, she is surprised at the immediate ease she feels in his presence. Soon her brightest moments are those spent with the captain. But even as their friendship grows into something more, outside forces have other plans for the two. Mr. Mead, the handsome vicar, has also taken a liking to the quiet and timid Abigail—and he will stop at nothing to ensure she becomes his wife.

My Review

Adoring Abigail is a quality Regency romance featuring a gentle relationship between Robert and Abigail that blossoms from genuine friendship into something even more special. The settings were easy to envision, from the vast estate Robert inherited, to the meadow and woods, to the cottage where Abigail lives with her grandmother. I enjoy characters that have realistic flaws and struggles, and Abigail having not only a speech impediment, but also a highly critical guardian, made me feel so much empathy for her. Through her circumstances she develops admirable attributes such as compassion and kindness, but it is Robert’s encouraging approval that helps her overcome her timidity and strengthen her courage when faced with her most difficult trial of all.

Robert is at an important transition point in his life, and while he doesn’t always handle the change gracefully, he is quick to apologize and make things right. I love how he and Abigail bring out the best in each other because they feel safe and accepted for who they really are. The story is well-rounded with the supporting cast of various community members and especially Robert’s sister Hazel, all of whom brought the distinct feeling of country society. The author is skilled at drawing forth emotion while exploring a variety of themes such as gossip, loneliness, hypocrisy, prejudice, friendship, loyalty, perseverance, and triumph over adversity. There is a nice balance of character development, tension, sweetness, and satisfaction. Highly recommend!

EXCERPT

“How was your date?” Levi plopped down in a chair on the opposite side of the table.
Daniel’s gut tightened. “What date?”
“You and Blythe. I saw you two drive in last night. Kind of late, if you ask me.”
“It was barely ten o’clock. And it was not a date. She needed some hiking shoes, so I ran her into Ouray.”
“It took you four hours to pick out shoes?”
Actually, it was more like five, but how did Levi know that? “Look, I know you’re fishin’, Levi, but I ain’t biting.”
“Fine, go ahead and deny it, but I know you have feelings for her.” His smug grin grated on Daniel.
“And how would you know that?”
“Uh, because I’ve known you since kindergarten.” He twisted his Camp Sneffels ball cap backward. “You don’t go crazy for the chicks. But the way you look at Blythe…that’s the kind of stuff you’d find in one of them romance novels.”
“Oh, so you’ve taken up reading?” Daniel may have appeared calm, but inside he was tap-dancing around landmines.
“No, but my mom has, like, hundreds of those things lying around her house.”
“Maybe you should borrow one. Might help you get a date instead of spying on other people.”
“Hey, I wasn’t spying.” His friend looked almost indignant. “I just happened to be outside, that’s all. And why are you treating me like the enemy? I think it’d be great if you and Blythe got together.”
Yeah, if the future of Camp Sneffels didn’t rest in her hands.
Grabbing his now-empty coffee cup, Daniel stood just as Blythe walked inside, her tablet tucked under her arm. And for some reason, Daniel couldn’t help but stare. Her hair was down for once, the soft waves skimming her shoulders. And the slight smile that played at her lips when she saw him tangled his insides like a bowl full of spaghetti.
A strong hand clapped against his shoulder, interrupting his reverie.
“Well, lookie there,” said Levi. “It appears you’re not the only one who’s mastered that smitten look.” He gave Daniel a final squeeze. “Have fun. I’m off to inspect the zip line.”

Book Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway: A Girl's Guide to the Outback by Jessica Kate #GirlsGuideTour

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

A Girl's Guide to the Outback
By Jessica Kate
Christian Contemporary Romance
Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 368 Pages
January 28th 2020 by Thomas Nelson

How far will a girl go to win back a guy she can’t stand? This funny, sweet, and romantic story proves that opposites do attract—and that God has a sense of humor.

Samuel Payton is a passionate youth pastor in Virginia, but below the surface, he’s still recovering from the blow of a failed business and insecurities he can’t shake. His coworker, start-up expert Kimberly Foster, is brilliant, fearless, and capable, but years of personal rejection have left her defensive and longing for a family. Two people have never been more at odds—or more attracted to one another. And every day at work, the sparks sure do fly.

When Kimberly’s ambitious plans for Sam’s ministry butt up against his risk-averse nature, Sam decides that obligations to family trump his work for the church. He quits the ministry and heads home to Australia to help his sister, Jules, save her struggling farm. As Kimberly’s grand plans flounder, she is forced to face the truth: that no one can replace Sam. Together they strike up a deal: If Kimberly comes to work on Jules’s dairy farm and lends her business brains to their endeavor, then maybe—just maybe—Sam will reconsider his future with the church.

As Kimberly tries her hand at Australian farm life, she learns more about herself than she could’ve ever expected. Meanwhile Sam is forced to re-evaluate this spunky woman he thought he already knew. As foes slowly morph into friends, they wonder if they might be something even more. But when disaster strikes the farm, will Sam find it within himself to take a risk that could lead to love? And will Kimberly trust God with her future?

Excerpt

Sam grinned at her and winked.

She stopped. No way. This was weird.

“Oh, come on.” He leaned out the door, grasped her forearm, and pulled her in. With the door shut, the three of them sat shoulder to shoulder . . . thigh to thigh. Kimberly rolled down her window and tried not to think about how, even on a day so hot she felt like a roast duck, the sensation of Sam’s warmth against her side was exquisite.

Jules fired up the engine, and Sam shifted the vehicle into first. “Okay, Jules, take us on a tour. Pretend we’ve never seen the farm before. Take us to all your favorite spots and tell Kim about them.”

Delight spilled over Jules’s features, and she steered down the driveway. “Mum and Dad got married at the top of that rise in the front paddock. You can see half the farm from there. Then we’ll hit the turkey’s nest—our irrigation system is pretty nifty.”

Kimberly shifted her eyes to Sam’s face. Clever boy. Jules would probably volunteer half the information they needed, and a few well-placed questions from Sam would elicit the rest. How did he manage that? She talked to people and they got angry. Sam did it and they had a sudden urge to tell their entire life story. It was like he had a sign on his forehead that said, “It’s okay. You’re safe with me.” Apparently the sign on her own forehead was less reassuring.

He caught her looking at him and offered a smile. She offered one back and mouthed a thank-you. He squeezed her hand and returned his attention to Jules’s monologue about why the paddock of sorghum on their left was the fastest growing in the shire.

Two hours later they arrived back at the sheds and Jules left to go check on her chooks—chickens, to the uninitiated. Kimberly leaned against the truck and watched Sam unload a reel of electric tape and temporary fence posts from the truck bed. “Thanks for that. I didn’t even realize she was ready to skin me until the Coke can went flying.”

He gave her a smile that curled her toes. “That’s what I’m here for. We’re a team.”

“We’re a team.” A smile broke across her lips at his words.
