EXCERPT

Twenty-one years ago she'd stood in Ferngrove, looking out the picture window in her parents' living room, observing the delivery of her 1902 Hazelton Brothers piano: a seven-foot Victorian grand made of burled wood and accented with hand-carved scrolling. This piano had become her emotional vehicle, defining her and filling her hours. It had become her safest place. Her love affair with that instrument had charted the course of her life.

Nine years later, she'd stood at that same picture window as three movers, like pallbearers, removed her piano. The sale of it paid her college tuition. Often, over the years, she had imagined that piano, her first love, sitting in someone else's living room and responding to a stranger's touch. Even now she longed for the familiarity of those ivory keys.

Windows. She'd been standing at a picture window when she first saw David. He had stepped through the door — and quite unexpectedly into her heart — at her best friend's wedding.
Her pulse still quickened when she thought of watching him walk up the sidewalk of the Baker house.

Oh, David, we were so different, but we fit like the last two pieces of a puzzle. You were so full of life and so spontaneous. And your laugh ... Your laugh could fill up a room. Me? I was more soulful, always analyzing things, and all I had to bring to a room was my music.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Phyllis-Publicity750x1000

Phyllis Clark Nichols’s character-driven Southern fiction explores profound human questions using the imagined residents of small town communities you just know you’ve visited before. With a strong faith and a love for nature, art, music, and ordinary people, she tells redemptive tales of loss and recovery, estrangement and connection, longing and fulfillment . . . often through surprisingly serendipitous events.

Phyllis grew up in the deep shade of magnolia trees in South Georgia. Born during a hurricane, she is no stranger to the winds of change: In addition to her life as a novelist, Phyllis is a seminary graduate, concert pianist, and cofounder of a national cable network with health- and disability-related programming. Regardless of the role she’s playing, Phyllis brings creativity and compelling storytelling.

She frequently appears at conventions, conferences, civic groups, and churches, performing half-hour musical monologues that express her faith, joy, and thoughts about life—all with the homespun humor and gentility of a true Southern woman.

Synopsis

It all started with a bet and a book.

Emory Blake is the ultimate bibliophile. She’d take curling up with a good novel over a night on the town any day of the week. But then best friend Tate Woodby accuses her of living between the pages of her paperbacks instead of the real world, and make a bet that will force her to experience the adventures of her fictional friends…instead of just reading about them. With her face no longer buried in books, Emory must confront the pain of the past. But is it also her perfect opportunity to discover the hunky hero who could be the happily-ever-after of her own story?

Synopsis

Governess Juliana Ashbourne has dreams reaching far beyond the confines of her current position, hoping to someday establish her own school for girls. When she inherits a fortune from her late grandfather, she is shocked to learn that “someday” may soon be within reach. However, there is one condition: she must spend a month at the estate of Havenfield—with the very family who disowned her mother. Intent on securing the money she needs to start her school, Juliana accepts the invitation, vowing to guard her heart against those who shunned her all her life. But Havenfield is far from what she expects. She discovers a grandmother seeking forgiveness, a cold and disapproving aunt, and a painfully shy cousin. And then there is Mr. William Rowley. Though the heir to the estate is a merciless tease, Juliana finds in him a friend and confidant—and perhaps something more. As she struggles to make sense of her new place in the world, her stubborn independence clashes with a yearning to belong and the even more confusing desires of her heart.

My Review

Everything I love about Regency and romance came together beautifully in this debut novel. Juliana is strong but also vulnerable, and tries to protect herself from potential hurts by holding herself back. William is so fun and charming, I loved their banter and the friendship and romance that eventually develop. There are family dynamics that Juliana needs to learn to navigate, and she learns valuable lessons from them and her new circumstances. I loved the subtle humor that gave a lighter feel to the story and the relationships especially. Looking forward to reading more from this author!

He needs a great idea

She can provide it—but at what cost?

The battle lines are drawn when army medic turned EMT Ava Andrews enters a contest devised by San Francisco entrepreneur Kyle Quinn. The first responder isn’t just competing for a tempting grand prize. She’s fighting her attraction to the self-made millionaire…and losing the war. But private and professional boundaries blur when a breach of trust threatens Ava’s future with Kyle.

Excerpt

But Ava was here. Dressed in a bold bottle-green dress and looking like the model she never claimed to be. Kyle wanted to be near her again. That should’ve made him run in the other direction. Instead, he moved through the crowd, offered a chin dip acknowledgment to different guests, yet never lost sight of Ava.

Finally, he stood within touching distance. And hesitated like he’d stepped back into middle school and watched the party invites flash across cell phones in the hallway. He’d always held his breath, waiting for his phone to vibrate with a new text alert. The invites had never arrived. He’d long since stopped hoping.

Stopped holding his breath.

Until now. With Ava. His breath stilled. That deceitful hope flared. Had she come to see him?

Ava stepped forward, embraced him without hesitation. The hug was too quick. Too impersonal. He wanted to reach for her again. Pull her against him and hold on, for longer than appropriate, until all those tense places inside him calmed. Until he tackled that awkward boy from his past and wrestled every old insecurity back into place. Until the hope faded.

Ava motioned to an older auburn-haired woman in a wheelchair with a bright multicolored shawl draped around her thin shoulders. “Kyle, this is my mother, Karen.”

Kyle jolted, yet managed to keep his expression contained, his smile in place. Her mother? He hadn’t expected family introductions. Friends met families. Boyfriends met parents.

Ava and he weren’t...anything. But could they be? That urge to take Ava into his arms lowered to a simmer and refused to fade.

He ignored those useless thoughts. His schoolboy days of crushes and old wishes were in the past. Forgotten underneath his master’s degree and practical business pursuits. He took Karen’s hand, kept his grip steady and gentle. “Pleasure to meet you.”

“I haven’t been this nervous since Ava deployed for her last time.” Karen held on to Kyle’s hand. “I hope they make the announcement for the finalists soon.”

Ava touched her ear, and then her bracelet. Her hands fluttered around her, but never stilled. Only her smile settled on Kyle. “Can’t deny my own nerves, either. Or that I’m still in shock about getting the call from your contest people.”

His people? That hope splintered. He’d known better than to trust it anyway. Ava wasn’t here for him, but for the contest.
