Guest Post by Author Virginia McCullough

Drifting Dreams

Like Andi says in LOVE, UNEXPECTED, someone (they don’t yet know who) named the wooden motor yacht Drifting Dreamer for a reason. For me, the name brings to mind the old song “Moon River,” with “two drifters off to see the world.” As Zeke observed, in 1939 no one built a 50-foot yacht if they didn’t have some big dreams.

Drifting Dreamer comes into Zeke’s life as a big surprise—and not a welcome one. It shows up unexpectedly at his dock one day. And not in all its glory. With peeling varnish, cracks in the once pristine mahogany cabin, and bronze fittings turned green, nightmares come to mind, but certainly not dreams. It seems Zeke’s dad, Art, inherited this eyesore to settle a twenty-year-old debt. Zeke’s first thought is to dismantle it and sell off the pieces of this boat, which is already dying of neglect. But luckily—for the boat and Zeke—Andi shows up with an idea, and Zeke’s initial impulse suddenly doesn’t seem so appealing anymore.

Spinning dreams is at the heart of LOVE, UNEXPECTED. Zeke Donovan has an old dream he was on the way to fulfilling, but his commitment to look after his dad led him to set aside what he wanted for himself. On the other hand, Andi gradually discovers the possibility of having something wonderful she’d never dared to dream she could have.

As they find themselves attracted, becoming fast friends who fall in love along the way, they uncover hints about Drifting Dreamer’s first owners, whose story is linked with the coming the Second World War. Charles and Mary Peterson have plenty of dreams and maybe a few conflicts to deal with, too. (Families are good at bringing in a little conflict, aren’t they?) At first these discoveries lead to more questions than answers, but Zeke and Andi aren’t inclined to quit until they piece together almost eight decades of the boat’s life.

As Andi and Zeke begin to nurture their individual desires, they’re inspired by Charles and Mary and they understand why Drifting Dreamer is an apt name for the yacht. They also come to identify with Charles and Mary’s dreams—even those unfulfilled—as they begin to fill in the blanks of the couple’s joys and sorrows. And it might be that no one in the boat’s long life ever felt the same way about Drifting Dreamer than her first owners—at least until now.

Andi and Zeke soon learn that one summer can bring big life changes. By bringing the boat back to life, they open up to possibilities and dreams that take their lives in new directions. So, just as love was unexpected, so were the dreams.

Writing Andi and Zeke’s story, I realized once again that given a choice I’ll always choose to believe in the value of dreams, even knowing they might change their form over time or a few might not ever come true. But some do come to fruition—if we work for them. No wonder so many of us keep on believing in the power of dreams.

Launch - Note from the Author

Welcome to my blog tour with Prism!

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my new book, The Doctor’s Recovery, in my City By The Bay Series with Harlequin Heartwarming. The Doctor’s Recovery is a sweet contemporary romance that brings together daredevil documentary filmmaker, Mia Fiore and ER doctor, Wyatt Reid. Two years ago, Wyatt and Mia shared an unforgettable goodbye kiss. Now a scuba diving accident has brought Mia into Wyatt’s San Francisco ER. Now Wyatt and Mia have second chance at a real relationship, but only if they can open themselves up to love and discover that they just might be stronger and better together.

Happy Reading!

Heidi Reads... - Adrenaline Rush or Adrenaline Pause

My heroine in my May release, The Doctor’s Recovery is a documentary film-maker. Mia Fiore, a thrill seeker and risk-taker has traveled the world for her films. Still there are many adventures to be found right here in the US. Here are five of Mia’s top adventures for thrill-seekers like her. And for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground and their adventures with a little less adrenaline like myself, each location has an alternative experience that offers its own unforgettable memories...

Harlequin Junkie - Spotlight & Exclusive Giveaway

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

The working title of this book was Broken Vows, Mended Hearts. I’m not the best at titles (you can ask my daughters who cringe when I list my title ideas). So I’m very thankful for my editor who comes up with terrific final titles.

While I was researching this book, I watched quite a few videos of underwater dives and scuba diving accidents. Several of those scuba diving accidents made me seasick and I was sitting at my desk, watching the video on my computer. I’m not sure scuba diving will be in my future.

In The Doctor’s Recovery, there is a scene where the characters make a bet over a chess game challenge. The losers have to eat strange and weird food that the winners pick like moldy cheese jelly beans and beet ice cream. I discovered avocado ice cream during my research into strange food combinations and it’s become one of my favorites. I should probably mention I’ve been on an avocado binge recently and can’t seem to get enough no matter how it is prepared.

“But I have an actual job.” She clutched Dr. Hensen’s arm, holding him in place. The startled look behind his round glasses hinted at his retreat back inside his mental textbook. Mia continued, “And an important deadline to meet.”

A brisk knock and sure footsteps preceded the order from a familiar voice. “Right now, your only job is to heal.”

Dr. Hensen tugged his arm free and darted toward Wyatt Reid. Relief coated Dr. Hensen’s voice and slid into his extended handshake with Wyatt. “Nice to see that they let you out of the ER, Dr. Reid. We could certainly benefit from your skills up here.” He pushed on his glasses and glanced at Mia. “I agree with my colleague, Mia. You need to concentrate on your recovery. Don’t fight the process. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

"An emotional journey towards forgiveness, redemption and happily ever afters! . . .The characters are intriguing and keep us wanting to know more. The story line is a bit distracting, yet satisfying in it’s own way. Overall, a heart tugging story with a twist that is very enjoyable!"

Colorimetry - Beyond the Hospital

In my May release, The Doctor’s Recovery, my hero, Wyatt Reid, is an ER physician. For the past five years, Wyatt has been doing medical-aide work in the Africa. During my research for The Doctor’s Recovery, I discovered several unique jobs for physicians and medical professionals that were outside of the hospital and clinic environment...

"The Doctor’s Recovery by Cari Lynn Webb is my kind of story – rich in character depth and relationship drama – and I enjoyed it very much. There’s a complexity to lead characters Mia and Wyatt, much of it drawing from past events in their lives. San Francisco’s Bay area provides a vivid backdrop for the story, and there’s a great supporting cast as well."

"A great cast of intriguing secondary characters provides delightful support (and lighter moments) to the two multilayered protagonists and their relationship. Both Wyatt and Mia are easy to like and easy to cheer for, and Wyatt is swoonily romantic when it counts. I love how the title factors into the book and the subtle ways that it takes on meaning throughout. A heart-tugging and inspiring read!"

Wishful Endings - Inspiration for The Doctor's Recovery

My mother is a retired RN. She worked full-time through her first three pregnancies. When I came along (the last of four and the only girl), she stopped working. My father traveled frequently for his job and raising four children required full time hours from my mom. When I was in seventh grade, my mom decided to go back to nursing. A few weeks into her return to work, she came home and told me that she was considering quitting. She’d been out of the medical field for a while and the learning curve had increased over those years...

Wyatt leaned toward the bed and held Mia’s good hand between both of his. The contact satisfied nothing. He wanted a reaction. He wanted her to wake up, squeeze his fingers and reassure him that she really was alive. How pathetic had he become?

Mia Fiore needed a keeper. She needed someone to watch out for her and keep her from putting her life at risk again. She needed someone to show her that she was worth more alive than dead. She needed someone to love her beyond all reason.

Fortunately, that someone wasn’t Wyatt.

Mia studied the Craftsman bungalow with the front porch that begged for a swing. Tree branches draped over the fence in front of the truck as if reaching out to greet newcomers. She’d never considered settling into a house, but imagined a lovely home like Helen’s would be perfect. Even from the truck, something special surrounded the house as if the ground carried Mother Nature’s blessing. “You grew up here?” She heard both the awe and jealousy in her voice.

“Built a tree fort in the backyard and played hide-and-seek in the street.” Wyatt leaned across her and opened her door.

Mia imagined the boy inside the man racing through the neighborhood and acting like a pirate in the tree house. A child’s dream. Couches covered in sheets and lampshades wrapped in plastic anchored her childhood, making mud pies and collecting fireflies had been prohibited. Her childhood home looked as if it waited, suspended in time, dust-free under the protective coverings, until a new family moved in to give it life again. Stepping onto the porch, she understood why Helen refused to leave. She’d refuse to leave as well if she called this place home. “How’d you ever leave?”

"This book is so sweet, delightful, heartwarming and, at times, emotional. I thought it was pretty good. Mia and Wyatt were great, relateable characters, with perfect chemistry. I could not wait to find out what would happen next and wound up reading the whole book in one sitting."

What about you?” She leaned against him as they strolled back to the house.

“I’ll clean up the last bit from the dessert round and then sleep,” he said.

“I can help,” she offered.

“I’m not asking.” He guided her up the stairs into the house and motioned toward the bedrooms. “Good night, Mia.”

She turned around, held the palm he’d kissed up to her lips and smiled. “Sweet dreams, Doc.”

And then Wyatt knew. Knew that if he dared believe in the magic between them, his heart would never be the same. His life would never be the same.

"I really liked Helen, Wyatt's mom. She's brought many a smile to my face.

The romance seemed really sudden, but it was still sweet and satisfying.

Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable read and I'll definitely be on the lookout for more by this author."

I Am A ReaderFour-legged Visitors Only, Please

I’m an animal lover – I can’t walk into a pet shelter or pet store without wanting to bring home every dog and cat waiting for their forever home. If only I had the land and resources to adopt each one. In the meantime, I’ll keep volunteering at the rescue shelter and praying that every animal in need of a home finds one soon...

"These main characters…oh my! They were too similar for their own good. At first it might have seemed that they were opposites, however they both struggled with misplaced guilt and both were extremely stubborn!

...This story had lots and lots of great side characters in it and I enjoyed getting to know about all of them too. I enjoyed this contemporary romance."

A thick black curtain concealed Wyatt in the back of the private dining room in the Rustic Grill. His position was ideal for the guests’ arrival, offering a full view of guests without revealing himself. Laughter blended with varied conversations as the main doors to the dining room slid open. He skipped over Ava’s big smile and Eddy’s curls and his mother’s soft grin, searching the group spilling inside.

Finally, his gaze caught the one dark-haired, amber-eyed woman who had stamped herself in permanent ink on his heart. He snapped a picture in his mind of her in that moment: her eyes wide and brilliant, her skin glowing as if she’d been lit from within, her teal dress accentuating everything her favorite scrubs hid. He wanted to wrap her up in his embrace and steal her away right then, but he waited, held still in the shadowed corner.

"Emotions do not begin to describe the Doctor's Recovery. . . . You will not be let down by picking up this heartwarming read. "

Launch - Author Interview

What do you hope readers take with them after they read it?

People can change. Troy grows into a better man, and we see that reflected through Bridget's responses to him through the course of the story.

Also, what you see on the surface isn't always the truth. Michelle judges Troy based on what she sees - a hockey player without any problems, which is a stark contrast to her own life. She discovers there's more to his story. Michelle is dealing with her own problems, beyond the financial pressures that are apparent on the surface. And those rise up unexpectedly.

Mostly, I hope readers enjoy these characters, and the journey they take to find their HEA.

It's All About the Romance - Troy’s Tips on Parenting

Kids will lie about their bedtime.

Beer is not an appropriate snack...

"This book is so sweet, delightful, heartwarming and, at times, emotional. I thought it was pretty good. Michelle and Troy were great, relatable characters, with perfect chemistry."

If only it could have been Mitch, still with them in every way. Coming in hot and sweaty from a run and pulling her into his embrace while she squealed, and he pretended not to understand what she was squealing about...

Troy raised his eyebrows. “Hello?”

Michelle forced herself to glance up, and she saw amusement in his eyes. He thought she was tongue-tied from staring at his naked chest. As if. Yes, she was staring at him, but she could handle an attractive body. It was remembering the past that would bring her down.

"Her Family’s Defender by Kim Findlay is different from typical books that I read, in that it brought me into the world of Canadian ice hockey, and I thoroughly enjoyed it...

Kim Findlay has crafted an entertaining story that romance fans will enjoy, even those not particularly interested in sports (like me). I look forward to much more from this author."

He’s gone from winning the Stanley Cup, hockey’s highest prize, to battling cancer, and now he’s figuring out who he is after these experiences. He’s 6’2″, in excellent physical shape, and he’d agree that he’s good-looking. But his life is changing...

"This is a well-written book. There are things that happen to us in our lives that are hard to deal with and difficult to put behind us.

This book is a wonderful love story with people who are dealing with many of the hardships we all have to deal with. "

E-Romance News - Excerpt

What did he want from Michelle anyway? He remembered all his own arguments against dating mothers. They had responsibilities, and that wasn’t something he wanted to take on. And just as important, they had kids, and kids shouldn’t be hurt.

Right now, though, the idea of responsibility wasn’t scaring him. It wasn’t a vague thing anymore; these were two kids he was attached to. Being responsible for them sounded okay. Better than okay. Being part of their family tonight, and the taco night...he’d truly enjoyed that.

And he’d move heaven and earth to make sure those two weren’t hurt.

"I loved this book! From when Michelle and Troy first meet until the end this was such an enjoyable and fun read...

I'd recommend Her Family's Defender to fans of contemporary romance, it was just wonderful."

"Her Family's Defender is the Second book in the A Hockey Romance series by Kim Findlay. . . . This is a great family friendly romance and I thoroughly enjoyed it."

"If you are craving a sports romance that will make you smile and swoon, with characters you’ll quickly come to care about, then Her Family’s Defender is a great choice for you! The Canadian setting was a nice change of pace and, even though I know basically nothing about hockey, I really enjoyed that dimension to the story as well. Additionally, I loved the role that the characters from book 1 played in this novel despite the fact that I have yet to read their particular story. A cute story with layered characters and a sweet message!"

Michelle is focused on her family. She grew up in a military home, moving around, and enlisted herself, where she met and married another recruit. He came back from deployment suffering from PTSD, and eventually committed suicide...

"Her Family’s Defender was an nice story. I really liked Troy, who began the story as a quintessential bachelor, but by the end was intricately entwined in the Robinson family...

I liked Michelle. . . . I enjoyed their family dynamic, and especially enjoyed the way Troy fit right in.

...I enjoyed this title and look forward to reading more from this author."

“I don’t need a babysitter,” Angie spat out, giving her mom the side eye. “But Mom’s afraid to leave us completely alone at night.” For twelve the kid could really give attitude.

“If you don’t want a babysitter, what are you doing here?” Troy asked.

Angie sighed, burdened by these slow-witted adults. “Mom doesn’t trust us. She got someone to come for the night, just as if we were babies, but that person canceled. I can take care of my brother. I just need a responsible adult I can call if anything happens,” Angie retorted.

“Am I responsible enough?” Troy asked with a grin.

Remembrancy - Review

"As a hockey fan who is enjoying cheering for her team in the playoffs, what more could I ask for than a hockey romance? How about one with miscommunication and dislike between the guy and gal? Or with a couple of kids in the mix?"

Colorimetry - Occasions when coffee is required

When the handsome hockey player across the hall knocks at your door early on a Saturday morning to offer hockey tickets...

"I really enjoyed this one. . . . This book had all the feels, but also a good amount of humor. I just gobbled this book up."

Heidi Reads... - Excerpt

If he was honest, the day he’d been told the cancer was gone had been incredible, in a completely different way.

But that victory had been humbling and private, and something he hoped never to repeat again. The Cup he intended to win again if he could.

He wasn’t going to tell all that to a twelve-year-old, though, so he simply said that not much could top hoisting the Cup over your head.

"Emotion filled and reality laced! From the first page, we are captivated by the emotional journey these two characters are embarking on as they set out to pick up the pieces of their ravaged lives and find a way to carry on. . . . Overall, a solid read."

Mahon and Iris come together to take care of the baby as they try to find her parents, and they begin to see new possibilities for their future.

My Review

Another lovely collection of Amish themed stories from a group of my favorite authors in the genre! My favorite was The Midwife's Dream because it had such a sweet romance with a long-time unrequited love revealed and all the special feelings that come with realizing a friend can become something more. I also enjoyed The Treasured Book since I had read the series by the author set in Birch Creek and it was fun to see Aunt Cevilla playing matchmaker again. The Cedar Chest is bittersweet and I appreciated the wisdom of a mother gently helping her married daughter who is going through a rocky time in her marriage. A Legacy of Love is centered around a past relationship that is getting a second chance as Susie and Leon realize that their timing and communication was off before. I'd recommend this novella collection to fans of Amish fiction!

(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

My rating: 5+ stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

This edition pairs the bestselling Edenbrooke with the never-before-published novelette Heir to Edenbrooke, which is the prequel to the story, told from the point-of-view of the dashing suitor of Edenbrooke.

Marianne Daventry will do anything to escape the boredom of Bath and the amorous attentions of an unwanted suitor. So when an invitation arrives from her twin sister, Cecily, to join her at a sprawling country estate, she jumps at the chance. Thinking she'll be able to relax and enjoy her beloved English countryside while her sister snags the handsome heir of Edenbrooke, Marianne finds that even the best laid plan can go awry.

From a terrifying run-in with a highwayman to a seemingly harmless flirtation, Marianne find herself embroiled in an unexpected adventure filled with enough romance and intrigue to keep her mind racing. Will Marianne be able to rein in her traitorous heart, or will a mysterious stranger sweep her off her feet? Fate had something other than a relaxing summer in mind when it sent Marianne to Edenbrooke.

The prequel novelette, Heir to Edenbrooke, is told from Philip's point-of-view and includes his side of the story of when he met Marianne for the first time.

And I have to share the covers of the individual books because they are beautiful!
