Book Blitz, Interview, Excerpt & Giveaway: The Valentine Wager by Nan Reinhardt

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Author Interview

The setting for your Tule books is the small town of River’s Edge, Indiana, which is full of quirky and fun secondary characters. Did you grow up in a small town?

I did not. I grew up in the suburbs of a big city, but ever since I read Anne of Green Gables, I’ve wanted to experience small town life. I get some of that at our lake cottage, which is in a small town, but mostly, I’m a city girl. That said, there are plenty of quirky characters in the city, too, so lots of inspiration.

What is the most surprising thing you discovered about yourself while writing The Valentine Wager?

Hmmm… I think it was that I can write faster than I believe I can. The stories are there and if I trust myself and relax, they’ll come out the end of my fingers. It’s kinda magical, don’t you think?

Can you share with us something about The Valentine Wager that isn’t in the blurb?

Sure. Kitt is a horsewoman and Ryker is afraid of horses, so there’s a fun scene involving horses.

Give us three words to describe your heroine Kitt and three to describe hero Ryker.

Kitt is determined, flirty, and cautious. Ryker is good, smart, and loyal.

What do you hope your readers will take away from this book?

The idea that you can’t let past hurts keep you from loving again. Stay open to whatever life brings your way.

The Valentine Wager is book 1 in your Lange Brothers series. Want to give us a sneak peek at whose book is next?

Ryker’s younger brother Dr. Max Lange is up next, and there’s some pretty exciting stuff in his story, including a fun seasoned secondary romance, which is always a treat for me.

What is the most difficult part about writing for you?

The middle. My friend, author Liz Flaherty and I have a little saying that goes, “First is the meet-cute, the attracted, stuff happens, then there’s a conflict, and then the happily ever after.” It’s the “stuff happens” part that’s hardest for me, but if you let your characters go, they’ll usually come through.

What is the toughest criticism you’ve received as a writer? The best compliment?

An editor once told me my hero was an a**hole. Man, that one hurt, particularly because she was right. He was. I learned so much from her about characterization and story. I’ll always be grateful, but that was pretty harsh.

Writing can be an emotional, stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

Breathe. Really. Just breathe. When you’re overwhelmed, step away, take a walk, have a glass of wine, weed a garden, read a book, watch a movie, absorb some story. You’d be surprised how much it helps to just step away for a few hours.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

For a while I wanted to be an archeologist—in 4th grade, I learned about Howard Carter and the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and I was fascinated. But then I found out Egypt was hot and there were scorpions, so… In high school for a while I wanted to go to Paris and be a translator—I’m an unabashed Francophile. But between those, I was writing and I knew one day, I would be a writer. Being published was dream I didn’t dare to express out loud, but wow! It’s an amazing ride!

Favorite book when you were a kid?

Every book I read—seriously. But the one that made me want to be a romance writer was Gene Stratton-Porter’s The Harvester. David Langston was the ultimate romance novel hero—I highly recommend it!

Not only are you a prolific writer, but you’re also a freelance copy editor. What came first—writing or editing?

I’ve been writing since I could hold a pen, so the real answer is writing, but I’ve been a freelance editor since 1996 and my first book wasn’t published until 2012, so… you do the math. I love both my careers—editing is always challenging and I get to read a lot of great books and discover new authors. Writing is my heart. I can’t imagine me without it.

And here is a question that everyone loves: If you could choose three people, living or dead, to invite to a dinner party, who would they be and why?

My mom because I miss her; Dorothy Parker because she’s funny and quick and I think we’d get along great; and Carole King because she seems like such an intelligent, gentle soul and after dinner she could sing for us.

She’s done with players, and vows she won’t let the local sexy cop distract her, but Kitt, a flirt herself, is definitely tempted. To keep her sanity as she prepares for several Valentine-themed winery events, she and Ryker make a bet: for the next three weeks, neither of them can flirt with the other.

Excerpt from The Valentine Wager

Kitt Boynton scowled as the driver heading right for her veered off to his own lane before laying on his horn and making a terribly rude gesture. The second time it had happened in as many kilometers…er, miles on the road down to the center of town. “Eejit!” she shouted and returned the gesture. Closed up in the car as she was, there was no way he heard it; nonetheless, it felt good to release her frustration. Were the people in this town dense or just truly poor drivers? She really wasn’t fond of driving in Indiana.

Carefully, she maneuvered her cousin Bren’s Jeep around a curve and the little town of River’s Edge nestled on the banks of the Ohio River came into view. Thank the Lord, she was almost there. Who knew traveling the short distance from the Four Irish Brothers Winery on the ridge above town to their in-town tasting room would be so hazardous? Another mile and she’d turn on—she glanced at her phone propped up by the gearbox—Riverview Road. Then a few blocks to the tasting room. Dry frosty leaves blew across the road as she passed a rocky outcropping where a lovely little waterfall spilled into a shallow pool below. She wondered why it wasn’t frozen as cold as it gotten since Christmas.

Southern Indiana reminded her a bit of Ireland, which in turn made her homesick for County Wexford and Ma and Da and her brothers and sisters—all seven of them—and the horses. The time difference was six hours, so it would be nearly six p.m. on the horse farm where Kitt had grown up. Da would be feeding the livery horses—pouring grain and dropping flakes of hay. Her heart ached at the thought of Dewey, her Irish hunter gelding, nestled in his stall, probably wondering why she wasn’t there to ride him across the meadow and down to the sea. She hoped her little sister Nora was riding him as she’d promised.

A siren wailed briefly and when she glanced in the rearview mirror, red and blue lights flashed behind her. A police car needed to get around. Why didn’t he just swing into the opposite lane and go past? There was nothing coming. Whaaaa-wha-wha. The siren whooped again and now the guarda’s car was right on her bumper. Was he pulling her over? She checked her mirror again. He was!

Frustrated, Kitt scouted for a safe place to stop, finally ending up pulling into an empty lot next to the post office. Her speed had been perfectly within the legal limit posted, Bren had checked that all the lights and signals on his Jeep were working fine, and the tires were brand new. What could this guy possibly want? The officer pulled in crossways behind her, blocking her in the parking space, but he didn’t jump right out of his car. Instead, he sat there for a moment, staring at something in his lap.

Finally, he opened his door and got out. In her side-view mirror, she watched him approach the Jeep. He was big. Intimidatingly tall, and under his winter jacket, the buttons on his navy-blue uniform shirt strained a bit across his brawny chest. He wasn’t wearing a hat and his hair was all shades of blond and light brown with glints of gold, styled deliberately messy, more like an Aussie surfer dude than a small-town copper. The only thing missing was a pair of mirrored sunglasses, which she was certain were probably on the passenger seat of his police car. He looked like the type.

When he drew nearer, she could see he was what her sister Maeve would call a fine thing—clean-shaven and ruggedly handsome with full, sensual lips. He eyed her license plate as he tapped on an electronic device with a stylus. She took a deep breath and rolled down the window.

“License, registration, and proof of insurance, please.” His voice was deep and oh, dear God, poured over her like warm melted butter with just those few impersonal words. His gray eyes reminded her of the Irish Sea right before a storm.

Whew. She must be lonelier than she thought. Those were not the kinds of comparisons she ought to be making at this moment.

Digging around in the glove box, she produced the black pouch Brendan had told her was there and found the registration and insurance certificate. Then she reached toward her capacious handbag on the floor in front of the passenger seat.

“Hands on the wheel, please.” The officer’s clipped words stopped her mid-reach.

“D’ye want to see my driving license?” She looked over her shoulder at him bent over and peering into the car. “It’s in my bag”—she pointed—“down there.”

He nodded brusquely. “Bring out your wallet, slowly.”

She swallowed the chuckle that rose in her throat as she pulled her wallet out, opened it, and offered it to the policeman.

“Remove the license from your wallet, please,” he ordered.

She did and handed it to him. “Officer, what’s going on?”

He held up one finger as he examined it. “This is an Irish license.”

Handsome, but a bit thick? “Perhaps because I’m just arrived from Ireland?”

He raised one blond brow. “Well, Miss Boynton, do you know why I stopped you?”

She had no idea why he’d stopped her. She shrugged. “Not a clue, I’m sure.”

“Have you been drinking, ma’am?”

This time she laughed out loud. “Are ye quite mad, man? It’s not even noon.”

He eyed her, his gray eyes going from charcoal to silver in the late-morning light. “I ask because you were driving rather erratically and on the wrong side of the road.”

Kitt scoffed. “I was driving erratically? You should be chasing down the two eejits back there.” She pointed over her shoulder as she peered at his brass badge glinting in the noon sun. No name, just a badge number. “One of them nearly plowed me over.”

He sighed and straightened. “Miss Boynton, please step out of your vehicle.”

She tilted her head, trying to see his face. “Are you crazy? I’m not gettin’ out of this car. That’s how women get abducted or do ye no watch CSI?” Surreptitiously, she shoved the lock on the door with her thumb, fully aware that he could simply unlock it again by sticking his hand into her open window. Ridiculous, but she felt more secure anyway.

He crossed his arms over his chest, the tablet tucked under one elbow. “We got a call about you. Apparently, you’ve been driving on the wrong side of the road for several miles.”

Had she? She thought for minute. Sweet Lord, she had! She closed her eyes, then opened them, deciding to give humor a try.

She beamed up at him. “Officer, I prefer to think of it as this whole country drives on the wrong side of the road—I’m drivin’ on the right side of the road.”

Interview with authors

Susan May Warren and James L. Rubart

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Susie: I’m the wife of a man who loves adventure, the mother of four amazing adult children, most who have inherited their father’s need to see the world, May-May to the most beautiful grand-daughter on the planet, dog mom to two rascally labradoodles, owner of Novel.Academy, a school that teaches authors how get published and build brilliant careers, co-founder of Sunrise Publishing, and USA Today best-selling, RITA award-winning novelist of over 85 books. Oh, and I scuba dive. 😊

Jim: I’m a twenty eight year old trapped inside an older man’s body. Uh, my wife says sometimes I’m a 12 year old boy who’s trapped … Darci is the love of my life, definitely my better three quarters. We live on a small lake in Eastern Washington state with our two cats. Our sons decided to leave us when they reached adulthood and we love them dearly. I’m a bestselling, Christy Hall of Fame author, audio book narrator, speaker, and co-owner of The Rubart Writing Academy where my son and I show people how they can reach the same dreams I have.

What do you do besides writing?

Susie: I am an DIY home remodel addict…I love to design a remodel and implement it. It is not beyond me to stop my SUV and rescue old furniture off the side of the road and give it new life. I need a bigger garage.

Jim: You know those people who have few hobbies? I’m the antithesis of that. I love to water ski, snow ski, dirt bike, ride bicycles, hike, backpack, play golf, play guitar, do photography, do sleight of hand, and scuba dive. (But Susie and I haven’t gone yet together. Someday!)

What was your favorite part of researching for this book?

Susie: The music, by far. I have a classic rock playlist and ever time Rem got in his car, I imagined what tunes would accompany his journey to the next location. I also enjoyed playing with time…messing with Rem and his futures (and pasts!) so I could see him grow into the amazing character he becomes.

Do you have images you can share that come close to how you picture your characters? Do you like to find visual inspiration for your characters before or during your writing process?

Susie: For sure. Seeing them is huge…and actually, I like to find a TV or movie character that sort of embodies Rem. I saw Rem in Henry Cavill, who plays a panicked detective in an old movie entitled, Night Hunter. Great movie and great inspiration for Rem!

What are some songs that you listened to or inspired you while writing your book?

The entire collection of Journey, some Creedence, Kansas, 38 Special and occasionally Bryan Adams. Yeah, it was fun.

What message would you like readers to ultimately take away from the book?

Susie: That no matter what happens, your past helps you become who you are today, the lessons you learned were valuable, and that there is a purpose in everything, if we’re willing to trust and wait for it.

Jim: That regrets are chains that hold us back from truly living. If we’re always looking back, we can’t see the bright future coming right at us. How do we know it’s bright? Because there are always second chances, and third and fourth and fifth chances. We just need to be open to seeing them.

What can we look forward to coming from you in the future?

Susie: Currently, I’m working on a 3 book series for Revell, set in Alaska. But, I’m always noodling on where time and adventure could take me…and my readers. So, stay tuned!

Jim: I’m working on my first non-fiction book, about father’s and sons; how to raise them well. Also a contemporary novel based on Satan’s request to sift Peter like wheat.

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Paint Me Fearless
(Shady Gully #1)
By Hallie Lee
Contemporary, Christian Fiction
Paperback, ebook & audiobook, 322 Pages
January 6, 2021 by WordCrafts Press

Although their petite appearances are strikingly similar, ROBIN and DESIREE (DESI) have little in common. When Desi moves to the small town of Shady Gully, Louisiana, the unpopular Robin feels diminished by the new girl's notoriety.

But fate has other ideas, and as these two isolated girls are drawn together, a friendship born in high school evolves into a bond that promises to last a lifetime. Even as their paths diverge, and they clumsily marry and plow through raising families of their own, they remain true.

Even as they nurse their respective bruises, and carry their traumas from childhood into their own marriages, they always have each other's backs. Even when a sordid secret from their past emerges to threaten their families, together...they remain a force to be reckoned with.

Until years later, when they're enjoying the prime of their lives, a stunning rumor surfaces that threatens their lifelong connection. The allegation suggests that one has betrayed the other.

Truth? Lie? Does it matter? Sometimes just the hint of betrayal is enough to ruin a lifelong bond.

As their worlds collide, and old insecurities rise to the forefront, the layers of Desi and Robin's legendary friendship begin to unravel.

Just when it seems they've lost everything, the truth brings them full circle...and in their brokenness they come to realize that there is only one true way to fill the emptiness inside, to quiet the lies...and to ultimately become...fearless.

Author Interview

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Sure! I was born and raised in Louisiana, and very much inspired by my mom, who was a voracious reader. Because she encouraged my aspirations, I began writing short stories in high school, then tried my hand at romance novels in my twenties. But it was when my family moved Santa Fe, New Mexico, that I really honed my writing skills.

The exposure to such a creative movie making town gave me the opportunity to attend writing conferences and classes. I learned to write screenplays, and met Ronnie Clemmer, the producer of A League of Their Own. He saw something in me he wanted to mentor, and I really feel his tutelage and insight made me a better, more mature writer.

We eventually left Santa Fe and moved to Kentucky, and the southern landscape inspired me. It brought me back to my roots, and I wanted to try – one more time – to write a novel.

Paint Me Fearless was the result, and with it, the Shady Gully Series was born!

What do you do besides writing?

I love to bake. I love to read. And I love to binge watch! Mostly though, I love hanging out with my family and my pets!

Do you have images you can share that come close to how you picture your characters? Do you like to find visual inspiration for your characters before or during your writing process?

Visual images are very inspiring, aren’t they? Because the story begins when my characters are in junior high, and ends when they are middle aged, my “pictures” of them evolved over time.

I’d LOVE to share with you a one-minute trailer I made for PAINT ME FEARLESS, where you’ll see a few “images/silhouettes” of Desi and Robin. Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to read PAINT ME FEARLESS afterward.

Paint Me Fearless Trailer on Facebook Watch
Paint Me Fearless Trailer at Hallie Lee's Website

What are some songs that you listened to or inspired you while writing your book?

What a great question! I’m one of those weird writers who can’t listen to music while I write. I LOVE music, and become absorbed in it when I listen, so it would be impossible for me to do both at the same time. However, there are many songs that inspired me with scenes such as Fear Is a Liar, by Zach Williams, Ain’t No Grave by Bethel Music, and Do It Again by Elevation Worship.

What message would you like readers to ultimately take away from the book?

My hope is that Desi and Robin’s journey inspires readers, and that they come away with the strength to overcome the lies the devil tells them about themselves. I really believe fear, shame, and regret can steal our lives, and my biggest triumph would be for readers to get to the last page and say, “No more!”

What can we look forward to coming from you in the future?

The Shady Gully Series continues on October 6, 2021, and promises thought provoking, relatable journeys whose cast of characters tend to be ornery, but loveable, dramatic, but kind, and quirky, but smarter than they appear.

Here’s a little teaser for Book 2…

The much-anticipated second book in The Shady Gully Series picks up five years after Paint Me Fearless, Hallie Lee’s Best Selling Contemporary Christian Fiction novel.

Book Two opens with a secret burial in the night. Amid a blinding, hellacious storm, a man digs a grave. He’s covered in blood, and he appears culpable. Guilty even. He also looks heartbroken…

About the Author

Born and raised in Louisiana, most of Hallie Lee’s screenplays and novels are set in the south. Inspired by a landscape rich with cantankerous, salt of the earth folks, Hallie’s characters tend to be dramatic, but kind, and quirky, but smarter than they appear.

A move to the creative community of Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2005 gave her the opportunity to take up screenwriting. As her screenplays were recognized with awards and placements in various contests, she had the opportunity to learn from award winning talents like Kirk Ellis (The John Adams miniseries) and Ronnie Clemmer (A League of Their Own).

But alas, her heart is southern, and when she and her family made another move to Kentucky, it renewed her passion for writing novels. And southern story telling.

Paint Me Fearless is the first in The Shady Gully Series, a series which promises thought provoking, relatable journeys whose cast of characters tend to be ornery, but loveable.

It’s women’s literature. It’s book club fiction. It's faith based. It’s Hallie Lee.

Interview with Author Rachel McMillan

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I live in Toronto, Canada and I love to travel solo –especially for research for my books.  I am also a Starbucks addict and Broadway nerd (I have seen Les Miserables on 3 continents). I am a Hallmark Christmas movie buff and my favourite movie is Master and Commander. I would love to visit Egypt someday and own a basset hound. But most of all, more than anything in the world, I love to read and gush about books.

What do you do besides writing?

Reading is a huge part of my life!  I am a literary agent as well so I get to work in publishing basically all of the time which is wonderful for me.  I love visiting my little nieces and nephew and I love being out and around in Toronto.  Travel is a huge part of my life, as mentioned, and I am also a classically trained vocalist. I love music!

What was your favorite part of researching this book?

I loved learning all about the churches and studying the Wren designs from when he first rebuilt the churches after the Great Fire in 1666. Many of the churches rebuilt after the Blitz were based on those designs. The Toronto Reference Library has wonderful facsimiles of some of Wren’s original blue prints and it was so fun to sit there with my notebook and look over them all and take notes.

I also spent 10 days in London with a side trip to Bletchley Park immersed in this world. I specifically spent time in Clerkenwell (Where Brent Somerville’s flat is ), Along Fleet Street and the Strand and King’s College and in over 30 churches ( Wren designed and those from other architects) bombed or rebuilt after the war taking notes and pictures and doing on-location writing. All of that helped me capture Brent and Diana’s world: pre-war and post-war.

Do you have images you can share that come close to how you picture your characters? Do you like to find visual inspiration for your characters before or during your writing process?

Some writers create characters, I always say that I meet mine because they appear to me so clearly set in my mind that it is often hard to find real life counterparts. I see them down to the freckle and hear them so clearly in my mind.

That being said, I knew this question would come up and so I tried. Brent is especially hard because he has dark red hair and is broad-shouldered.  One reader said she pictured Eddie Redmayne, another James Norton... maybe he’s a hybrid of both.

Diana is a striking, curvy blonde who might look a bit like Romola Garai.

What are some songs that you listened to or inspired you while writing your book?

Mozart plays a pretty big role in this book and in the companion book releasing next year called The Mozart Code

So, I listen to a lot of Mozart.  The Grosse Messe in C Minor,  Ave Verum Corpus and his Piano Concerto No. 17 play a big part in London Restoration and in the upcoming The Mozart Code.

I once wrote a contemporary romance called Rose in Three Quarter Time where music played a huge role and so I “auditioned” songs, especially for key and pivotal moments in my conductor hero and violinist heroine’s lives. With The London Restoration, I knew that I had to find Brent and Diana the perfect song.  So I listened to a lot of songs I knew--- standards and war ballads—trying to find something perfect. As a big music lover this was not a chore: amazing music came out of the pre-war and war periods. In the end, I settled on two different songs: I’ll Be Seeing You( a favourite of my Opa –who was a stretcher bearer for the Canadian forces and whom inspired that part of Brent Somerville’s life. I sang this song at his funeral when I was a teenager) and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.

In the end, I went with the latter: because it is not only a love story between two people but also the city that they love.  The London Restoration is a love story between Diana and Brent but also a love letter to London and it just fit.  So music plays a huge part in this book as in all of my books.

During edits though?  When times get tough? I just crack out my favourite Broadway musicals lol.  So a lot of Phantom and Wicked!

What message would you like readers to ultimately take away from the book?

There is something so amazing about the building of cathedrals. Liturgical almost. I remember when I watched Notre Dame burn on tv last April and how overcome I was by the loss of history I loved and had spent hours exploring.  But then even that day, firefighters were risking their lives to save it.  And plans for rebuilding were already in place.  In WWII Britain,  Churchill was so adamant St Paul’s Cathedral be saved that he formed a Paul’s Watch of volunteers that would protect the cathedral from firebombs at the cost of their lives.

I find this so amazing. The testament to Matt 16:18 that the fires of hell will not prevail against God’s house on earth.

But more still, the stonemasons and carpenters and architects who designed the great cathedral (building as high as they could up to heaven) knew that during their lifetimes they would never see the fruits of their labour.  They wouldn’t live to see the cathedrals in their entirety. They had to work knowing that what they were building would outlast them long after they were gone. I think that’s a really wonderful way to look at our legacy as humans. To be resilient when things crumble around us in adversity but also to recognize that we are just a blip on history’s timeline and the legacy and seeds that we plant now—the brick and mortar we contribute to a great cathedral of our works—can have eternal repurcussions.

What can we look forward to coming from you in the future?

Available for pre-order on Amazon

From author Rachel McMillan comes a richly researched historical romance that takes place in post-World War II Europe and features espionage and a strong female lead.

Lady Sophia Huntington Villiers is no stranger to intrigue, as her work with Alan Turing’s Bombe Machines at Bletchley Park during the war attests. Now, as part of Simon Barre’s covert team in postwar Vienna, she uses her inimitable charm and code name Starling to uncover a lethal double agent immersed in the world of relics—including the death mask of Mozart.

Simon Barrington, eighth earl of Camden, is determined to end the Cold War before it becomes as devastating as the war Britain has just won. He has been in love with Sophie Villiers since the moment he met her. A marriage of convenience to save Simon's estate brings them closer until a mission in Prague drives Sophie to a decision that will brand her not only a traitor to her country but also to her new husband.

With Sophie’s allegiance in question, Simon is torn between his duty to the crown and saving the woman who might have betrayed his cause and his heart.

 Thank you Rachel!
