Welcome to this book tour for LOVE, UNEXPECTED. I hope you’re happy to be back for the third visit to Two Moon Bay, Wisconsin. Book 3 of my Two Moon Bay series finds us on the waterfront again. Back when I wrote GIRL IN THE SPOTLIGHT, I knew Andi Sterling, Miles Jenkins’ former wife and Brooke’s mom, needed her own story. She told me so many times. You may remember Zeke Donovan and his dad, Art. They own Donovan Marine Supply and they made a couple of appearances in Book 2, SOMETHING TO TREASURE. They’re now front and center is this story, and Zeke gets a chance to expand his world—and his heart...

Heidi Reads... - Drifting Dreams

Like Andi says in LOVE, UNEXPECTED, someone (they don’t yet know who) named the wooden motor yacht Drifting Dreamer for a reason. For me, the name brings to mind the old song “Moon River,” with “two drifters off to see the world.” As Zeke observed, in 1939 no one built a 50-foot yacht if they didn’t have some big dreams.

He let Teddy take him to the woman, who was tall and slender, and wore jeans and a red T-shirt. When she saw him coming, she lifted her sunglasses and perched them on her head. In her other hand, she held a giant-size Bean Grinder to-go cup.

 “Good morning,” she called out, smiling. “I suppose I’m trespassing.”

 He was tongue-tied. By a pretty smile and long legs. He raised his hand in protest. “Probably so, but we won’t call the sheriff, at least not yet.”

 “I see. I have to prove myself first.” She held up the cup. “I’m armed only with the Bean Grinder’s morning mix.”

 “In that case, we’ll…” Zeke watched Teddy sniffing the woman’s sneakers. “I was going to say we’ll call off the dogs, but, too late.”

I Am A Reader - Does Zeke Keep his Promises?

Early readers have remarked that Zeke is a likeable guy. What’s not to like? He’s very attractive, friendly, a successful owner of a marine supply store, smart, and he even has a sense of humor. But he’s in his late thirties, and he’s never been married and doesn’t have kids. And it looks like he lives with dad. Really? Could be Zeke is a guy afraid to make a commitment. Here are the facts. You be the judge...


"Love, Unexpected by Virginia McCullough takes us back to two moon bay. I love this little town. I always enjoy each visit. In this visit we get to restore an old yacht as well as get to know the lovely Andi and Zeke. The are both very humbling and sweet. I enjoyed getting to know both of them."


Andi stretched her arm to get deep inside a hard-to-reach cubbyhole behind the navigation table to check for damaged wood. Her hand hit a divider with a finger grip, but the first tug didn’t budge it. The second and third tries didn’t move it, either. Determined now, she took a breath and gave it one more hard pull. Bam…she captured the graying piece of wood, but jerked backward with the force of the movement.

 When she righted herself, she shined her flashlight inside to have a look inside the narrow space. The beam caught the corner of something that looked like paper.

 “Well, well, what’s this all about?” she said to herself, curious and excited. Secret papers? That could be an overstatement, but these pages weren’t left out in the open. Someone had stashed them out of sight.

Colorimetry - Andi’s Tips for Single Moms

Andi laughed in my ear when I ask her about tips for single moms, but once I got her started, she didn’t hesitate to give me her list, starting with:

Andi tilted her head and looked where he was pointing. “Stars. Imagine that. It’s been ages since I’ve seen more than a few of the brightest ones.”

Zeke exaggerated a sweeping gesture to take in the boat. “So happens we have a boat. I guess when we get her put back together some, she could take us far enough out to see some stars, huh? This fall, before it gets too cold.”

Andi responded with a quick slap of her palms. “See? You inherited a floating stargazer. She’s only slightly torn apart.”

Zeke laughed. Drifting Dreamer wasn’t exactly ready for even a short cruise. It wouldn’t be long, though. Andi was making progress.


"Love, Unexpected was a fun read. I recognized some of the characters, since I'd read the first book in the series, Girl in the Spotlight, last year. I definitely think this book stands on its own, but it was fun seeing how those characters lives have continued...

I definitely recommend this novel to all fans of contemporary romance. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author."

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a lot of those books as well. But a story like this one feels so much more realistic to me and leaves me feeling a bit more peaceful and nostalgic.

The Backcountry of Colonial America – A Dangerous Place!


 

Thanks for having me visit with you, Heidi! I’d like to share with your readers, especially those unfamiliar with frontier colonial times, a little bit of the problems of living in the wilderness at that time. I’d like to direct readers to www.colonialquills.org our group blog, which shares all kinds of information about colonial times. Most folks at that time lived on the coast. There was a reason for that. Some population was due to ease of travel by water. But another reason was that one’s “enemies” lived further west.

In my story, “Shenandoah Hearts”, in the mid-1750s, my hero Jacob Owens lives a life of ease and relative safety in Philadelphia. A shoppe owner, he’s quite comfortable there! But his adventurous grandparents had lived in the backcountry in the early 18th Century, making them some of the first settlers in a sparsely populated area. Sparsely populated for a reason. If you watched any of those television shows in the 1960s and 1970s and thereabouts, you probably saw “Indian attacks” as being a big theme. Realize that the Native Americans, who’d populated coastal America, had already been pushed back. Where? To the frontier, including western Virginia.

When I began researching another book, Saving the Marquise’s Granddaughter a novel from Pelican (2016), I dug into the Rare Books stacks at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, which sits at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I read the accounts of the settlers to the Shenandoah Valley, where my ancestor Johan Adam Roush and his wife Susannah Sehler Roush settled. Some of the tales were so tragic I could barely force myself to read them. But I began to see that these people were stalwart and must have had something that motivated them so strongly that they’d stay in such a dangerous place. Multiple individual accounts told of abductions, burning of cabins, scalpings, and various Indian attacks. Granted, a number of these attacks may have been by “rebels” who didn’t have the sanctioning of the tribe. Still, there were so many heartbreaking stories, across the region, from various times, that this posed a significant threat.

Living here in coastal Virginia, I have access to many colonial era historical museums such as Colonial Williamsburg and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. We know that the British required people to worship via the Church of England (Anglican) YET the settlers on the frontier were primarily Palatinaters (from the Palatinate of Germany) who were Lutherans. Why allow all those Germans to settle and not follow the rules of the coast? Easy. They were a human shield between the French to the west and Native Americans inland, and those who lived in coastal colonial Virginia.

Question: Would you want to move somewhere dangerous? What might make you overcome your reservations?

Drifting Dreams

        Like Andi says in LOVE, UNEXPECTED, someone (they don’t yet know who) named the wooden motor yacht Drifting Dreamer for a reason. For me, the name brings to mind the old song “Moon River,” with “two drifters off to see the world.” As Zeke observed, in 1939 no one built a 50-foot yacht if they didn’t have some big dreams.

        Drifting Dreamer comes into Zeke’s life as a big surprise—and not a welcome one. It shows up unexpectedly at his dock one day. And not in all its glory. With peeling varnish, cracks in the once pristine mahogany cabin, and bronze fittings turned green, nightmares come to mind, but certainly not dreams. It seems Zeke’s dad, Art, inherited this eyesore to settle a twenty-year-old debt. Zeke’s first thought is to dismantle it and sell off the pieces of this boat, which is already dying of neglect. But luckily—for the boat and Zeke—Andi shows up with an idea, and Zeke’s initial impulse suddenly doesn’t seem so appealing anymore.  

Spinning dreams is at the heart of LOVE, UNEXPECTED. Zeke Donovan has an old dream he was on the way to fulfilling, but his commitment to look after his dad led him to set aside what he wanted for himself. On the other hand, Andi gradually discovers the possibility of having something wonderful she’d never dared to dream she could have.  

As they find themselves attracted, becoming fast friends who fall in love along the way, they uncover hints about Drifting Dreamer’s first owners, whose story is linked with the coming the Second World War. Charles and Mary Peterson have plenty of dreams and maybe a few conflicts to deal with, too. (Families are good at bringing in a little conflict, aren’t they?) At first these discoveries lead to more questions than answers, but Zeke and Andi aren’t inclined to quit until they piece together almost eight decades of the boat’s life.

As Andi and Zeke begin to nurture their individual desires, they’re inspired by Charles and Mary and they understand why Drifting Dreamer is an apt name for the yacht. They also come to identify with Charles and Mary’s dreams—even those unfulfilled—as they begin to fill in the blanks of the couple’s joys and sorrows. And it might be that no one in the boat’s long life ever felt the same way about Drifting Dreamer than her first owners—at least until now.

Andi and Zeke soon learn that one summer can bring big life changes. By bringing the boat back to life, they open up to possibilities and dreams that take their lives in new directions. So, just as love was unexpected, so were the dreams.

Writing Andi and Zeke’s story, I realized once again that given a choice I’ll always choose to believe in the value of dreams, even knowing they might change their form over time or a few might not ever come true. But some do come to fruition—if we work for them. No wonder so many of us keep on believing in the power of dreams.

About the Author
