Review: The Fall of Lord Drayson by Rachael Anderson

Heidi Reads... The Fall of Lord Drayson by Rachael Anderson

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Who is he really? A high and mighty lord or a lowly servant?

When Colin Cavendish, the new earl of Drayson, informs Lucy Beresford that she and her mother need to vacate the house they've called home for the past two years, Lucy is fit to be tied. They have no money, no relations they can turn to for help, and nowhere to go. How dare the earl break the promise his father had made to the Beresfords without so much as a twinge of conscience?

Fate plays her hand when Lucy discovers the earl unconscious and injured in the middle of the road. When he awakens with no recollection of who he is, Lucy seizes the opportunity to teach the earl a much-needed lesson in humility and tells him that he is nothing more than a mere servant. Her servant, in fact.

And thus begins the charming tale of a pompous lord and an impetuous young woman, caught together in a web so tangled that it begs the question: Will they ever get out?

My Review

Utterly charming. Totally hilarious. I loved how self-aware Lucy is. She is very observant of how her conflict over her deception grows as she comes to know "Collins"... and she is the one who learns a lesson as well as he. She is a bit of an odd duck, not conforming to society's standards and perfectly willing to live her life as a spinster because of it. The root of her rebelliousness however is her thoughtful and accepting nature, which makes her easier to sympathize with. Colin does make a rather bad impression on her, but he surprises her with his work ethic and hidden compassion. Their developing friendship and attraction is sweet and the sassy banter between them feels natural to their characters. Lucy's maid, mother, and various neighbors make up a well-rounded cast that enhances the story. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book! Highly recommend to fans of Regency and sweet romance.

Excerpt

He stared at her incredulously, as though she had escaped Bedlam. “Are you in your right mind, woman?” Lucy leaned forward and planted her palms on his bed so that her eyes were level with his. “My name is Lucy Beresford. I have lived in Askern all my life. I’m the sole daughter of a vicar and a seamstress who lived most happily despite their differences in station. When my father passed away, I came here, to this dower house. So yes, I am in my right mind. It is you who are not.” The earl’s jaw clenched, and Lucy took some pleasure at the sight. Perhaps he would come down off his high horse and show at least a small amount of kindness or respect. “I may not know who I am or where I came from,” he finally said, “but at least I do not feel the need to tell tales.” “Tell tales?” Lucy gaped at him. Was he accusing her of telling untruths? Her, of all people? What untruths? How dare he! Lord Drayson glanced down at his fingers, frowning when he spotted grime under his nails. He began to scrape it out as he spoke. “Claiming to be the daughter of a vicar and seamstress is all very romantic, but it cannot possibly be the truth.” “And why not?” she asked. His gaze returned to hers. “In my experience, the daughter of a vicar would behave with more decorum, would know how to make a palatable broth, and would never allow herself to be alone in a room with a man who is not her relative. If there is one thing I know with absolute certainty, it is that you are no relation of mine.” Lucy’s jaw clenched as she fought to control the rage building inside her. Ever so slowly, she pushed herself up to standing and glared down at the earl. “You are correct in thinking I am no ordinary vicar’s daughter. I do not love unconditionally. I show decorum only when I wish to. And I despise those who care for no one but themselves. But I do not tell tales.” He actually chuckled, but it was more of a scoff than a show of humor. “Did you learn those traits from your father?” “Do not speak of my father.” “I would prefer to speak of myself, but you do not seem to share that preference, so perhaps we should speak of your father instead. Where is he, by the by? I would very much like to meet him.” Lucy’s fingers became fists while her conscience became a battleground between all that was good and evil inside her. It was a short battle, with evil making a quick triumph. Ever so slowly, her body still trembling with anger, she lifted her chin. If he was going to accuse her of telling tales, then tell them she would. “Very well, Collins. If you must know, I am your employer. And though you may not remember me, or this house, or your position in it, or the fact that you are perfectly susceptible to coming off a horse, just like any other human, I still expect some kindness and respect from you.” “What on earth are you talking about? What position?” There was not a hint of hesitation in her voice when she answered. “You are a servant in this house.”

Review & Giveaway: Not Always Happenstance by Rachael Anderson

Not Always Happenstance

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Lani has lived in Hana, Hawaii for five years. She’s learned to surf, fish, dive, and manage her grandmother’s bed and breakfast. She’s also learned to take one day at a time the way it should be taken—relaxed and unrushed, savoring every moment. But, like a large wave on the brink of breaking, her life is about to crash out of control. A proposal of marriage, a conniving grandmother, a cryptic Asian woman, and a handsome guest, and suddenly everything calm begins to churn, everything clear becomes confused, and all that was normal segues into peculiar. As Lani struggles against the current to hold her ground, she realizes that she can either continue to fight and eventually lose, or take a take a leap of faith, hold her breath, and ride the wave wherever it takes her.
***This book is part of the Power of the Matchmaker series that features one recurring character—the match maker—but it is a STAND-ALONE novel.***

My Review

It took me a while to get into this book since I didn't quite get the main characters' motivations when it came to the way they had strung people along in relationships... but by the epilogue I was a wee bit teary so I have to say they grew on me :) Something I loved about Lani was that even though she was attracted to Easton, she called him on his crap and showed him how important it was to her to just be real. Easton is a charmer for sure, one of those guys you can't help but like. The thoughts and emotions of Lani and Easton felt realistic as they navigated the territory of friends with undeniable chemistry, who have agreed to be just friends, because to be more than friends would inevitably lead to heartbreak (or so they think). Their dilemma created plenty of romantic tension in a setting that is on my bucket list to visit- Maui, Hawaii! I loved the descriptions of the landscape, the hike off the beaten path, the surf session, and the culture.

Review: Power of the Matchmaker by Karey White, Rachael Anderson, Sheralyn Pratt, Jaima Fixsen, Kelly Oram, Heather B. Moore, Julie Wright, Heidi Ashworth, Taylor Dean, Michele Paige Holmes, Janette Rallison, Regina Sirois

Heidi Reads... The Power of the Matchmaker

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

A prequel novella to the POWER OF THE MATCHMAKER Series
Mystical . . . Beautiful . . . Romantic . . .
12 novels by 12 bestselling authors
Released once a month in 2016
Read the matchmaker’s story to find out where it all starts . . .

Mae Li has been in love with Chen Zhu for years, and he with her. But when the matchmaker arrives at the Zhu family home, she recommends another village girl for Chen.

Heartbroken, Mae Li watches as Chen does his duty by marrying another. Mae flees her village with the clothes on her back and her only possession—a pearl embedded comb, given to her as a goodbye gift from Chen Zhu.

Upon Mae’s arrival in Shanghai, she quickly learns that she’ll starve within days unless she sells her prized comb or joins a courtesan house. She goes to the Huangpu River and promises the River God that she’ll always be selfless if he will save her from becoming a prostitute . . . Her wish is granted when Ms. Tan, the matchmaker of Shanghai, finds Mae. But Mae must completely change her future and her name if she is to become the next matchmaker.

My Review

What a sad situation. It's hard to imagine giving a matchmaker the power to choose who you will marry. What I loved about this short story is that Mae wasn't about to stay and watch her love live his life with someone else. Her perseverance and self-preservation were strengths that helped her push forward. I thought the ending was fitting since this is the introduction to a series of stories where Mae will influence couple so their path to true love, written by many of my favorite authors. I'm looking forward to reading more!

Review & $50 Giveaway! Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity by Rachael Anderson

Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Home for the summer, Samantha Kinsey is ready to step into her role as pseudo-nanny for her two favorite charges. But when she realizes she'll be playing chauffeur more than playmate, her summer outlook quickly turns from fun to bleak. That is, until she meets Colton McCoy—a genuine, hard-working cowboy, who's as set in his ways as he is handsome. Although he claims he doesn't need any spontaneity in his life, Sam’s determined to help him find it. But she'll soon discover that cowboys are about as easy to change as wild mustangs.

Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity is about an adaptable girl and a not so adaptable guy. It’s about learning to accept people for who they are and realizing that sometimes who they are is exactly who they should be.

My Review

Loved. It. Rachael Anderson is my new favorite contemporary clean romance author and I must read everything by her! I've read and reviewed all three books in the Meet Your Match series now and each is fresh, unique, with fabulous romantic chemistry.

The characters of Samantha and Colton are so realistic and easy to relate to. It was a pleasure to read their growing friendship, light flirting and banter, and deepening feelings. The setting of the ranch with the subplot of training a wild mustang with Kajsa added a nice dimension. Sam has some funny moments interacting with the horses and brings out the playful side of Colton- he doesn't seem to me like a stick in the mud as the title labels him. Although Colton is confident and knows what he wants out of life, it was refreshing to see him turn to his father for wisdom more than once. The ending was absolutely perfect after Sam and Colton navigate the diffulties of beginning a relationship during a time of transition. Highly recommend! For full enjoyment, read the series in order, although it's not necessary.

Synopsis

For Noah Mackie, life is finally back on track. He has a great support system, a promised promotion is on its way, and he's finally getting the hang of this single father thing. But when the job falls through and his neighbor's matchmaking efforts become more aggressive, Noah is in for yet another unwanted detour. With his career and two spirited daughters to worry about, he doesn't have time for dating—especially not someone like Cassie Ellis, his girls' beautiful and sophisticated dance instructor, who is about as open and approachable as a brick wall.

Rough around the Edges Meets Refined is about two people who think they know exactly what they want but who have no idea what they really need. It's about learning that people aren't always what they seem and that sometimes life’s detours take you exactly where you need to go.

My Review

This is a great contemporary romance! Cassie is finding herself again after a dysfunctional marriage ends, Noah has been grieving his wife for four years. Their first impressions of each other aren't favorable, but as Noah renovates Cassie's basement for a dance studio, they are given the opportunity to see the true person behind the walls they put up... which slowly come down. This author is skilled at giving her characters great scenes and dialogue- it's like watching a movie in my head! My favorite is when Noah catches Cassie lip-synching in her kitchen and she sees a whole other side of him as he joins in and encourages her to just have fun, while he sees the side of her that is yearning to let go and live passionately.

This is the second book in Rachael Anderson's Meet Your Match series, and Noah and his daughters are minor characters in the first book, Prejudice Meets Pride which features his sister as the lead (read my review here). I recommend reading them in order to fully understand the backgrounds of all characters in the books, but they are also written to be read as stand-alone novels.

Review: Working It Out by Rachael Anderson

Working it Out by Rachael Anderson

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

A chance encounter . . .
Grace Warren's life is safe and predictable—exactly the way she likes it. But when she gets roped into going to an auction to help out a friend, everything changes. She meets Seth Tuttle—a guy who unexpectedly kisses her then disappears, leaving her flustered and upset. If she never sees him again, it will be too soon.

A chance for love . . .
Weeks later, when Seth limps into Grace's rehab clinic post surgery, he's every bit as frustrating and annoying as she remembered. Yet there's something about him that makes her second-guess her carefully placed boundaries even though he's everything she's sure she doesn't want in a man. But maybe Seth is exactly what Grace has needed all along—assuming she's willing to risk safe and predictable for a chance at love.

My Review

What I like most about this author's books are the honest emotions the characters experience. Even though Grace is confident and accomplished, she is affected by and attracted to Seth despite their initial encounter, and struggles with the vulnerability those feelings bring. She also harbors guilt over her brother Alec's paralyzing accident and learns to let go as Seth and his friend Lanna inspire Alec to embrace life. Seth is genuinely charismatic and fun-loving which doesn't change when his life goals and priorities shift as his relationship with Grace develops. An easy read with enjoyable characters.

My Review

I really connected to the characters in this book since they are so genuine in their feelings and expressing them to each other. There is some humor in the first impressions they form which are not the best, but become inexplicably drawn to each other. It was interesting to see the transition from foe to friendship. Even though the title implies that it's a contemporary Austen adaptation, it doesn't follow the original plot lines closely at all- in fact, the only similarity I felt was that the main characters start off with too much prejudice and pride, which they learn to overcome as they see beneath the surface of each others personalities and stretch beyond the comfort zone. Emma's sacrifice for her brother and nieces is the heart of this novel and brought some tears during the emotional parts. There is definitely chemistry between Kevin and Emma and I enjoyed their banter and conversations.
