His homecoming is bittersweet…for both of them

Café owner Maddie Strong is finally ready to take her burgeoning cupcake business to the next level. With the help of handsome businessman Alex Perkins, her future's all mapped out. Until her first love comes home.

At seventeen, Maddie adored Nate Barzonni with her whole heart and soul. But when he asked her to elope, she'd said no—she couldn't let him throw away his dream of becoming a doctor. Then he vanished from her life for eleven years. Now the cardiac surgeon has returned to Indian Lake asking for a second chance, and Maddie has to choose between her new life…and the man she never stopped loving.

Excerpt

Valentine’s Day,” Maddie whispered. “A moneymaker day.” She smiled, then felt her smile drop off her face like icing off a cake when it’s been sitting in the sun too long. For the first time in over a decade, Maddie remembered that Valentine’s Day was a day for love.
She’d received beautiful flowers a few days ago, which was a first for her. Alex had even called her last night to make certain they’d arrived.
“Hey, beautiful. Happy Valentine’s Day tomorrow,” he’d said, his voice filled with anticipation. He spoke in a sultry baritone she’d never heard during their office meetings. Their conversations had always been about profits, projected earnings and potentials.
“They’re just gorgeous,” she’d gushed. “So exotic. Especially for this time of year.”
“I like unusual and unexpected things. Were you surprised?”
“Very. I couldn’t figure out who would be sending me flowers.”
“Ah. That’s good,” he said. “I wanted you to have something special while I was away...” His voice trailed off as if there was something else he was going to say before he thought better of it.
“So I don’t forget you? Is that what you were going to say, Alex?
      “You’re going away?”
“To Dubai. For three weeks,” he’d said, as if in apology.
“United Arab Emirates,” she’d whispered as her mind flitted halfway across the globe. “That’s a long way.”
“It is. Listen, I scheduled a meeting for us when I get back. We’ll need to catch up. And I’m hoping to have an investor for you by then.”
Maddie’s heart had actually tripped a beat. “Investor?”
“I don’t want to get your hopes up quite yet. But I have someone on the line. I’ll tell you about it when I get back. You take care, Maddie. I’ll try to text you while I’m gone. I hope their cell coverage isn’t as bad as the last time I was there.”
   “You’ve been to Dubai before?”
“Several times. I’m working on something....” He had a way of leaving valuable information hanging in space like tiny crumbs leading to hidden treasure.
Remembering their phone conversation, Maddie’s head was filled with thoughts of Alex. He was like a dream to her. He was tall, blond and wide-shouldered, and had a very strong jaw that looked as if it was chiseled from granite and a dimple in his chin. His blue eyes were the color of cornflowers in summer. His smile revealed sparkling white even teeth, and his full lips completed a face so handsome she finally understood why the Greeks invented a god of male beauty. Alex could have been a dead ringer for Adonis.
The first time she’d met him in his office, she was impressed with his confidence, sincerity and assuredness. He was the kind of man people trusted with their entire life’s savings. He was the kind of executive people turned to when their world was crashing down around them. Maddie’s first impression was that this man was smart enough, savvy enough, to turn around even the worst-case scenarios.
Now, he’d sent her flowers, and he’d been especially sweet to her on the phone, making her think about things romantic.
It had been a long, long time since Maddie had had time or room in her thoughts for anything other than her passion for her career.
Romance was something she’d discarded when she was seventeen, when Nate Barzonni had asked her to marry him and then left town the next day. He’d never called or written. She’d never received an explanation. He’d simply disappeared.
For over a decade, she’d been heartbroken and very, very angry.
No, Maddie thought. Romance was something that existed only in her past

Blog Tour Grand Finale: His Baby Dilemma by Catherine Lanigan

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Book Tour Grand Finale for
His Baby Dilemma
By Catherine Lanigan

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops
you can see snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:

Launch - Note from the Author

...Grace has longed for the day when Mica would love her. Mica only sees Grace as trying to unload the burden of his son on him. The rift between them is wider than the Atlantic Ocean that separates Europe from North America. The jolts and surprises they give each other will keep you guessing.

I hope you enjoy my story and that you fall in love with baby Jules as much as I did!

Happy reading!

— Catherine

"I thought that this was a sweet second chance story for these two characters. I also thought the secondary characters were enjoyable. I thought there was just the right amount of sweetness and just the right amount of humor. "

MICA HEARD IT from his sister-in-law, Maddie, who heard it from Mrs. Beabots, who got it straight from Louise Railton.

Grace Railton was back in town.

He didn’t know which emotion to pick first. Anger came to mind right off the bat, but it was quickly replaced with disappointment, hurt and curiosity.

“What’s she doing here?” Grace had made it pretty clear when she left town last year that Paris was the only universe she’d inhabit on a long-term basis. Indian Lake was too small for Grace, the beauty-pageant queen.

"A delightfully sweet story of never settling for less than “the one”! A surprise arrival leads to life altering news! Mica had been afloat trying to put the pieces of his life back together when a short-lived visit from his old friend Grace gave him a lot to think about before she returned to Paris. Now she’s suddenly back with a change that will knock him for a loop! The characters were easy to connect with, and the plot had me hoping she would be able to get it through his hard head that she could love him regardless of what he believed of himself! Always a joy to visit Catherine Lanigan’s fictional world of Indian Lake!"

Mrs. Beabots’s tree is decorated in a different theme every year. This year in HIS BABY DILEMMA, it’s decorated in aqua, pink and gold ornaments. You see these things in some of the catalogues this year. But back in the early 1960’s these were the colors on Jacqueline Kennedy’s White House Christmas Tree. I loved that tree.

During my research for this and many other books, I’ve read that blue and gold ribbons, ornaments and decorations are common in French homes. Blue candles.

Remembrancy - Review

"As Grace struggles with her unrequited love for Mica and he works through feelings of inadequacy (and a little jealousy), these two discover what they want most out of life looks different than it did before little Jules entered the picture. Tragedies happen and dreams change, but someone standing beside you makes life’s twists and turns worth the journey."

She dropped her forehead to the steering wheel. “I’m out of my mind.” She balled her fist on her thigh. She had to do this. Had to. Tears stung her eyes, but she pressed her fingertips to the corners. She couldn’t let anyone see her crying. Especially not Mica.

She had to pull it together. She’d felt brave over the past year, but that didn’t come close to how heartrendingly brave she was going to need to be once she came face-to-face with Mica.

I’m fascinated by Christmas traditions from just about every country, but having a bit of French heritage myself, and since Grace Railson in HIS BABY DILEMMA lives in Paris, I wanted to bring some French Christmas Traditions to you.

We all know our own Christmas shopping regimens, chores, duties and delights.

All French Christmas markets find their origins in Alsace. No doubt, the proximity of the region to Germany gives Alsatian and French Christmas markets a distinctly Germanic touch. (My ancestors were from Alsace Lorraine.)

Wishful Endings - Excerpt
THE WALLS OF Mica’s apartment were closing in on him. His heart was racing as if he’d just lifted the John Deere tractor off its tires with both hands. He couldn’t catch his breath.

A son?

When Grace had pulled up, he’d been caught between elation and shock. For a brief moment, he’d actually thought she’d come to back to see him. That she was back in town to stay. Back in his life.

He’d been a fool.

I’m amazed that a lot of our American traditions that we cling to so tightly and we think are original to us, are actually hybrids of traditions that have been around for centuries.

Take the Christmas Flower. Poinsettia? Right? It’s a tropical plant. The story must be from a warm country, you’d think.

Well, it’s from France.

Heidi Reads... - Excerpt

Luckily, Mrs. Beabots hadn’t rented her upstairs apartment to anyone and she was delighted to have Grace and the baby staying with her.

Once Grace had unpacked and settled in, Mrs. Beabots invited her for afternoon tea. She’d already invited Louise, as well as Sarah, who lived next door. Sarah had given birth to a baby girl, Charlotte, only three days after Jules was born on July 1, and Grace was looking forward to having her friend so close by.

Jules was still napping when Grace headed downstairs at four, but because he was used to being transported from her Paris apartment to her studio, where designers shouted at each other over the cutting tables and sewing machines whirred, he could just about sleep through anything.

"I kept wandering how it was going to end up with her job being in Paris but you will have to read the book to see. Love his family and her aunt and the ice cream shop. I definitely will have to read more of this series."

"If you love babies, second chance romances, and challenges this book is for you! Catherine Lanigan sure knows how to throw that secret baby on us and the father for that matter. . . . I adored this read. I can't help it a baby gets me every time."

"I really like this story. It is interesting to watch the changes in the characters and to see how they dealt with the different life circumstances that they were faced with.

I think Catherine did a fabulous job again with this story."

I Am A Reader - Guest Post

When the Cathedral bells toll and the choirs within Notre Dame sing, the vibration of those reverent echoes drift straight to heaven.

Sacred and solemn, joyous and hope-filled, Christmas Eve night in Paris will waft through one’s memory like no other Christmas.

"There is a long road towards redemption and the grace of second chances - where each party has to come to terms with their own baggage before they can move forward. At the centre of it all is this beautiful baby boy who gives their parents a run for their money. And rightly so! He is just the 'unexpected' bundle to bridge a family back together whilst finding a way to heal two hearts who never realised how fractured they had become when they stopped themselves feel love and embracing the blessings which come from being loved."

MICA WAS SPEECHLESS as Grace rose from her chair, clearly bent on escorting him from her apartment. He couldn’t possibly have heard her right. She was turning him down? Was she out of her mind? What kind of game was she playing?

He bolted to his feet and grabbed her arm. “Wait a minute.”

“No, you wait a minute. I came to Indian Lake to get your help with our son. Granted, I didn’t go about any of this the right way. I should have told you about him when I discovered I was pregnant. I didn’t want to burden you because you were going through all kinds of—of…personal things. I thought I was sparing you from more trauma. I screwed up. I made a mistake. I see that now. But I’m not going to marry you. I only need your help for a while.”

Harlie's Books - Review

"Okay, I’m just going to say it. This is Ms. Lanigan’s best book. Yes, best book. If you can get past the awesome cuteness on the cover, the inside is pretty spectacular also. Don’t get me wrong, all of her books are good but this one stands out; especially for the line that it is written for. "

Colorimetry - Guest Post

When it comes to nostalgia, no one does it better than Americans. We can weep at the sight of a wreath on our mother’s front door, despite the fact that the wreath is plastic and a decade or more older. It is the love within that house that brings us home, time and again, holiday after holiday. It is love that shoves us out the door to buy more gifts, bake our bread for the kids, sew another stocking, weave a scarf for Uncle Jerry and take poinsettia’s to the nursing home. Americans are known throughout the world for their generosity. Show me a natural disaster and I’ll show you Americans who band together, help each other and literally give the shirts off our backs. We donate food, clothing and money, lots of money to the needy and helpless and homeless.

And at Christmas, we do more.

Mica glanced in the rearview mirror as a truck passed him.

He checked his speed. Ordinarily, this was about the spot where he’d hit the gas and tear up some asphalt.

Not anymore. He had precious cargo on board.

He had his son.

Mica inhaled deeply. “I’m a father."

“And fathers have serious obligations and responsibilities to their children. Grace was right about what she wants for you, buddy. She’s got it all together. Smart.”

Grace put Jules, in his baby carrier, on Mrs. Beabots’s kitchen island just as Aunt Louise walked in.
Louise smiled at their elderly host. “I brought you a plate of brownies I made this morning.”
Mrs. Beabots grinned. “Those are the brownies for your brownie-nut-fudge ice cream, I presume.”
    “They are.”
“How generous of you to share with us, Louise. We’ll put them out with the pecan and cranberry sandies I made. The tea is nearly ready. Sarah should be here any minute. I thought we’d sit in the front parlor. Luke put in a new heater for me out there and it’s quite toasty.” She winked. “The babies won’t get cold and we can watch the snowfall as the neighborhood Christmas lights come on.”
“Sounds lovely,” Grace replied, taking the china plate of cookies out to the front parlor as she hefted Jules’s carrier in her right hand. She set him on a red velvet Victorian chair. “Oh!” Grace exclaimed, spotting the skinny fir tree in the corner. “You have a Christmas tree out here.”
Louise placed the brownies on the coffee table. “Very pretty.”
“My big tree is in the library, as usual,” Mrs. Beabots explained. “But I spend so much time in here, reading and visiting, that it’s a shame not to have some of my favorite ornaments out to enjoy all the time.” Mrs. Beabots pointed to the tree. “All these are from Paris. Don’t you love the pink, gold and aqua? They were in vogue back in the sixties.”
“I’d love to hear more of your stories,” Grace said as the antique doorbell rang.
“That would be Sarah,” Mrs. Beabots said, placing the teapot on the coffee table. “I’ll be right back.”
“Uh-huh. Just in time not to disclose anything juicy about Paris or Coco Chanel, huh?” Grace teased.
Louise winked at her niece. “She’ll never spill.”
“Not even to me?” Grace asked.
“Never. Secrets are her passion. Along with these cookies.”
Sarah followed Mrs. Beabots into the room, holding a pink bundle. “Grace!” she squealed. “I’m so happy to see you!” She gave Grace a one-armed hug. “This is Charlotte. Annie’s on her way over. She had to walk Beau first. She’s dying to talk to you.”
    “Goodness. I’m flattered, but why?”
“Oh,” Mrs. Beabots said impishly as she took Sarah’s coat. “You’ll see. She’s a million questions, that one. Tea, Sarah? You know you can have my mint-and-bourbon tea now that you’re not nursing.”
“True,” Sarah replied. “I’d love some tea.” She glanced at Grace. “Are you breastfeeding?”
“No. I had to go back to work five days after Jules was born. I took him to the studio with me, but formula let me be a bit more flexible with his feeding.”
“You’re kidding. They let you do that? Bring him in, I mean.”
Grace smiled. “Summer was a slow time for us and I’m the team leader. Though, once things ramped up in the fall, it was too hectic and Jules could feel my stress. I found a nanny, but she was clearly more interested in becoming a designer than she was in taking care of Jules. I was basically tutoring her while still doing the lion’s share of childcare.”
Sarah shook her head. “I can’t believe you got any work done at all! I’ve been able to take a longer mat leave, at least, but my whole day revolves around Charlotte. Sometimes I don’t even have time to eat, let alone do anything creative.”
Grace felt a rush of shame. The whole reason she’d come back to Indian Lake was that she couldn’t handle it all. How could anyone understand her motivation for leaving her baby here so she could continue her work half a world away? On the surface, she sounded like a heartless monster. She lifted her hand to Jules and let him curl his fingers around her forefinger. He smiled at her and when he did, the pacifier in his mouth wiggled and wobbled like it always did. Grace felt her heart tighten and then burst with love.
“I honestly don’t know how I’ve made it the past six months,” she admitted. “Well, year, really. Jules deserves so much more than I can give him right now. It was tough enough working seven days a week and most nights being pregnant.” She lifted her eyes to Louise. “Thank goodness I inherited sturdy genes.”
Louise’s eyes misted as she put a hand on Grace’s shoulder. “You’re a good mother, Grace, and this decision has to be unbearably difficult.”

Book Tour Grand Finale: Family of His Own by Catherine Lanigan

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Book Tour Grand Finale for
Family of His Own
By Catherine Lanigan

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops
you can see snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below...

Launch - The Faerie Tour

Welcome back to THE SHORES OF INDIAN LAKE! If you’re reading the series and following our Prism book tours, I’ll bet you weren’t expecting something as fantastical as a Faerie Tale, especially after dealing with cops, drug dealers and PTSD like we did with Cate Sullivan and Trent Davis in PROTECTING THE SINGLE MOM, now did you?

Brooke Blogs - Isabelle’s Dreams

Isabelle’s ultimate dream is to see her paintings hang in a famous Chicago or New York City gallery. She is convinced that no art critic or buyer will ever want her silly faeries. She believes she needs to move on. To what, she is unsure.

Her insecurity about her art and her future stymies her, to some extent, just as any fear does to all of us. She wants so much, but is conflicted about which direction to take.

"This is not a book where you can easily predict the ending. I honestly didn’t know how it was going to turn out. Lanigan wove a story with complicated players and some unexpected twists, while once again infusing the novel with warmth and family. While I never really warmed up to Isabelle, Scott (and Bella and Michael) makes up for this in spades. And of course the setting of Indian Lake is one I’m always happy to visit"

It's All About the Romance - Painting Faeries

It was nearly six years ago when I started creating and building many of my characters for Indian Lake. Granted, there are some new ones, such as Isabelle’s entire family. They’re all new and I’m getting to know them now and you will, too, as we move into the future. Isabelle was quite vivid to me. Right from the beginning, I knew I wanted her to paint faeries. Not the little baby looking cutie pies inside flowers and laundry baskets, but real, honest to goodness faeries. I know…you are asking…are they real? Or you are asking, “Come on.”

She had to force herself to focus. “Yes, the glasses. Uh, for the midnight toast.”

He brushed his lips against her cheek. “And I’ll find you for my kiss to ring in the New Year.”

Isabelle hadn’t realized she’d shut her eyes, immersing herself in the moment with Scott.

She felt a whoosh of air, the temperature dropped and she blinked, returning to the present. Scott had left her.

Scott Abbott is one of those truly decent guys that come along one in your lifetime, if you’re lucky. He, like Isabelle, the heroine, was introduced in the first novel in the series, LOVE SHADOWS. Scott owns The Book Shop and Java Stop as well as being a reporter for the local newspaper. He grew up in Indian Lake and in high school, he had a crush on Isabelle, but after he went off to college to earn his journalism degree, Isabelle was left behind, working hard to help her mother pay for college tuitions for her brothers and sisters.

"FAMILY OF HIS OWN, is a sweet love story about two friends finding their forever together. Filled with wonderful characters, and heart wrenching emotion, this story was impossible to put down until the end. I had to know what happened to Scott and Isabelle. Loved, loved, loved this book."

Mel's Shelves - Review

"I love spending time in Indian Lake! It's fun to catch up with some of the other couples we've met in previous books and learn what's happening in their lives. This book does stand well on its own, so if it's your first visit to Indian Lake, you won't feel lost, and will most likely want to get to know the other characters as well. I hope to meet more Indian Lake residents in the future!"

"With characters from previous books appearing, these books always provide a sense of community and feelings of coming home. I love that. Indian Shores is a place I would want to live."

"A trip back to Indian Lake brings us the story of two friends … and possibly soul mates? I had conflicted feelings about this heroine. On one side, I understood how she felt about her past and the unfairness of it all, but on the other side, I found it really hard to like her when she was acting so selfish & one dimensional. There is turmoil, growth and happily ever afters … but a long road of self-discovery to get there!"

Paulette's Papers - Scott's Real Life Magic

In the scene in which Scott first sees Bella in a dank, musty crack house bedroom, she’s watching a cheap television that is playing “The Bishop’s Wife”, the old black and white movie with Cary Grant. It’s New Year’s Eve and Scott has just left Isabelle on the dance floor at midnight at the Lodge. Scott is wearing his tuxedo while the rest of the police wear Kevlar vests and gun holsters. Bella asks Scott if he is an angel. Surprised, he asks her why. She picks up the video tape box and points to Cary Grant in a dress suit. “You look just like him.” Convinced that Scott is the angel sent to save her and her brother Bella, she trusts Scott immediately, and melts his heart.

Children have no problem with magic. They expect it. And many times, they get it.

Isabelle steeled herself as she approached Scott. Before he had a chance to berate or accuse her, she whispered, “I was in Chicago and Wes graciously offered to drive me home through this terrible storm.”

Scott, ever the gentleman, offered his arm, which she took.

“Then I should thank him.

Becky on Books - Faerie Research and Other Fancies

I’d always wanted to write a story that involved faeries. Though there is nothing supernatural in the story telling in this Heartwarming story, I was piqued by the prodigious world of information about fairies. Folklore and mythology from ancient Celtics to Shakespeare, to Sir Walter Scott and William Blake in the 1790’s illustrate that fairies have been a source of delight and fascination to many generations.

The room was small and smelled musty, with only the light from an old television illuminating the faces of a little girl, about five or six years old, and the toddler in her arms.

The girl stared at them fearfully. Her lips quivered, but she remained silent. She took a step backward and hoisted the baby closer to the crook of her neck. The baby grabbed a handful of her cotton shirt and started fussing.

She made a cooing sound into the baby’s ear and whispered something Scott couldn’t make out, but it was clear she knew exactly how to react to the baby and the baby to her.

Wishful Endings - Interview

As FAMILY OF HIS OWN is your eighth book in your Shores of Indian Lake series, are you still discovering new things about the setting and/or the characters?

Discovering new characters has been the delight of doing a series like this. This is the first time I’ve created an entire town and the people in it. Just like moving to a new city and going through all the necessary introductions, finding new doctors, a new church, new schools, everything and everyone is new. I have the joy of discovering each new person and all of their extended family as well. Each time a main character goes out to buy something or interview for a job, there are all those “other” people who have backgrounds and stories. I love asking, “And who are you?” And the list of curious questions I ask when I meet someone new.

In a word, this has been a “blast!”

Scott leaned toward her, gazing at her with a force of longing and desire she couldn’t remember seeing before. “Isabelle, I came here tonight...” He placed his hand on hers. “To ask you something.”

A sense of foreboding settled over her. “Scott, I don’t think...”

"This book has made me fall in love with Indian Lake and I think I am gonna have to go back and read the rest of the series. I think this may be a first of Lanigan's books for me but will not be my last!"

“Scott,” Malcolm said, “I’d like you to meet my nephew—Wes Adams.”

“Great to meet you, Wes,” Scott said, offering his hand.

Wes nodded vaguely in Scott’s direction before locking eyes with Isabelle once more.

“Isabelle and Wes have already met,” Malcolm explained.

Scott dropped his hand to his side. “I can see that.”
