The magic of Christmas
Could make her wish come true!
A small-town Christmas wedding. What could be more romantic? Unless you’re a plus-one for hire like single mom Maia MacKenzie. Too bad handsome cowboy Brent Hayes is her new coworker—and completely off-limits! Neither of them can afford to lose their job…or invest in a relationship. But when she sees Brent’s adorable connection with her young son, Maia can’t help wishing for a Christmas miracle.
Excerpt
Before he could continue, a figure emerged from the stables, the two-story building casting her in shadows. She’d changed from her pale gold dress into jeans, and it took Brent a few seconds to recognize her. When he did, his pulse spiked.
Marla!
She recognized him, too, her brown eyes widening with surprise.
“Brett?”
“Hi.”
“You two know each other?” Ansel asked.
“We met this afternoon,” Brent said. “At a wedding. And the name’s actually Brent.”
“Oh. I apologize.” She looked chagrin. “I must have misheard.”
He didn’t explain the use of a fake name for his wedding-date side gig.
A movement drew his attention, and he realized Marla wasn’t alone. A child, a boy of one or maybe two, stepped out from behind her. After giving Brent a cautious once-over, he tipped his head way back and lifted his arms to Marla.
“Mama. Up. Up.”
Mama? Well, thought Brent, that was unexpected.
“What are you doing here?” she asked him, her tone curious rather than alarmed as she stroked her son’s head.
“He’s our new wrangler,” Ansel said and turned to Brent. “Maia’s my daughter. And this here young whippersnapper is TJ, my grandson.”
“Mama. Up.”
“Maia?” Brent asked. “This is embarrassing. I thought your name was Marla.”
She laughed. “It’s Maia. But sometimes Marla. It’s a long story.” She bent and lifted the boy into her arms, settling him on her hip.
He grinned, his previous exhaustion vanishing. This new job of his suddenly held much more appeal.
