My Review

There are few things I love to read so much as a Pride and Prejudice adaptation! I can be critical of the ones that are more of a retelling that doesn't offer much variation, but this book brought the classic story to the turn of the century deep in Appalachia, with new challenges alongside the universal struggles of our beloved characters. The slight shifts and twists that made this story its own while weaving in parts of the original in fresh ways made it entertaining to read. I was delighted with the portrayal of each member of the Bennet family, and loved how the author stayed true to the original personalities while adding depth and insight into each of them. They are more humble circumstances compared to the original Bennets, but in relation to their neighbors and the coal barons, the relative prosperity matches well enough to Pride and Prejudice. Lizbeth and Jayne are the resourceful, mature sisters that share a close bond, and aware enough to be slightly embarrassed by their family while loving them fiercely as well. 

William and his lawyer Callum are in the remote part of Virginia to determine if the local coal mine and surrounding property is a wise investment. It was fun that his luxurious train car represents his wealth, and the awe of the Bennet sisters when they are invited to tea there. William is confident in his own sphere, but Lizbeth brings out the awkward in him, and his self-mortification causes some miscommunication... thankfully resolved as they become friends. It was fascinating to learn historical details of the era and behind-the-scenes of the coal mine negotiations. I developed an appreciation for both the workers and the owners of the venture that supplied the fuel for energy. William is forward thinking in how to improve the mine productivity and conditions of the workers, including the poor mules who were raised by the Bennets and worked to death down in the mine without seeing sunlight again. The complications of land ownership, rumors and gossip, family interference, and misunderstandings bring conflict to William's relationship with Lizbeth and the Bennets, making the resolution all the sweeter and more satisfying in the end.

BENJAMIN BAT:

I’ll show her some tricks she can’t do.

“Watch this now,” he said as he fluttered away. Benjamin zipped and zapped all over the ravine. He sailed over trees and between narrow branches, giving a grand performance for the flycatcher.

Curious, Benjamin glanced toward JoJo for a split- second. His mistake cost him.

A barred owl was in hot pursuit!

Instantly realizing his error, Benjamin turned sharply to avoid capture, but one of the owl’s talons pierced his wing! For a few seconds, Benjamin was helpless.

The owl carried him upward, but his wing’s skin tore, freeing Benjamin.

Without full support from both wings, he nose-dived, slapping flat against a large boulder in the gulch. He rolled down hill through broken rocks and tangled roots.

“Ow! Ow!” he cried with each bump and bounce. The barred owl, whose sharp eyes never lost sight of Benjamin, dove down to finish him off.

JoJo sprang into action.

Shocked and angry, she tackled the much larger bird, pecking at its back over and over until it moved on to find an easier meal. Worried for her new friend, she swooped down to Benjamin’s rescue. “Are you okay?”

About the Author

Of the many jobs I’ve held in the past, including thirty-five years of designing and constructing stained glass windows part-time, teaching was one of the most enjoyable for me because investing in kids is so important. To this end, I continue to encourage good character with clean, moral stories kids and teens love to read. Good books make such an impact.

Writing is hard work, but there’s nothing like a good story to run off with your imagination. When things are flowing, it’s like a vacation. Sometimes the best ideas come in the middle of the night. 

When not writing, you’ll find me painting with watercolor, doing school visits, writing a blog, interviewing other writers, designing websites, working as an administrative assistant part-time, and renovating houses. 

Is this retirement? Apparently so! I’m loving every minute of it with my husband of 43 years.

“The beam above the doorway looks like it’s been painted to resemble marble. Why would rich people want fake stuff?” Pippa asked. “Surely, both Rembrandt and the owner of this place could both afford the real deal.”

“They probably could, but marbling was very popular during the seventeenth century. We can still see a lot of it in old palaces and churches. The painting technique was applied to chimney pieces, staircases, columns, and many other things.” Fabiola tapped her lip. “I bet that doorway goes to the anteroom. At least, that’s the way it is in Rembrandt’s house.”

Pippa narrowed her eyes. “An anteroom?”

“Rembrandt conducted his art dealing business in a room like that. He received customers and discussed commission for paintings—all over a glass of wine.” Fabiola turned to the back wall and sighed. “And look at that door with the rounded archway. I’m telling you, they’ve designed everything to take after the old master painter’s home.”

Pippa nudged Cary. “She’s going into a history trance. We’ve been here all but five minutes, and I’ve already learned everything I need to know about baroque interior and art dealing. Hurry, we need to rescue her.”

Fabiola laughed. “Stop it. I’m just in awe that someone has gone to such lengths to make their home a replica of Rembrandt’s. It’s fascinating.”

“How about a truce?” Micah’s goading expression had transformed to one of repentance. Sort of.

“I didn’t realize we were at war.”

His eyes crinkled at the edges. A blinking light on the desk phone caught his notice. He nodded at the front door. “I bet it’s a madhouse out there with the parade coming.” Holding the handset to his ear, he pressed a button on the phone’s base.

Hayley slunk down the final steps. Her red flannel shirt looked like it’d been filched from Paul Bunyan’s closet. And an oversized sweatshirt was tied loosely around her waist, as though it could slip off any moment, tangle her legs, and send her plunging to her death. Adding to the likeliness of that scenario, her focus lay on digging through her schoolbag.

I clenched my keys in my hand. She knew the dangers of not paying attention when going down stairs. I’d created a song that we sang together when at the age of four, she’d insisted on taking the stairway on her own from our second-­floor residence above the café. “Hold the railing, look with your eyes, then there won’t be a tumbling surprise.”

“Looks like I missed your call,” Micah said.

I blinked back to the present. “What?”

His athletic body hunched over the phone, listening intently.

Oh no. The rambling voice mail I’d left for Mrs. Gail.

My stomach plummeted. I scowled at Hayley, who moved like an inmate walking to the electric chair. I headed for the front door and opened it, hoping to elicit a quicker stride from my niece. “See you around.” I’d tossed the hasty farewell over my shoulder, one foot out the door.

“Kate,” Micah called from behind.

I stilled. Hayley crossed the threshold, nearly dragging her book bag, the straps brushing over my feet, gathering a million germs.

He lowered the phone, mischief twinkling in his emerald eyes. “My sister swears by Advil and Pop-­Tarts.”

I held in a breath in timing with two beats from the wall clock. “Thank you.” My tone relayed two different words: shove it. I flipped the sign on the door to Closed and left.

Excerpt

“There’s a book I need you to collect for me.”

Natalie’s interest piqued. He was speaking her language. Plus, if he wanted them looking for a book, chances were it was rare, old, or both. He wasn’t simply speaking her language—he was speaking it fluently.

“What is it?” Natalie leaned in.

“A handwritten and illustrated copy of Lewis Carroll’s first attempt at Alice in Wonderland, which he titled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.” The thought of a handwritten manuscript by Lewis Carroll vaulted Natalie out of her seat, but before she could speak, Brooke jumped in.

“That doesn’t make sense. Carroll gave that first edition to Alice Liddell, the little girl everyone believes inspired the story. That copy is now on display at the British Museum.”

Brooke owned a pawn shop and immersed herself in antiques. In fact, she’d once been an antique runner, acquiring pieces for wealthy collectors. Her knowledge and background often overlapped with Natalie’s, but no one knew history and literature quite like Natalie. This instance was case in point.

She looked across the room as she addressed everyone. “True, Carroll did give a copy to Alice, but it’s been rumored for years that he wrote an even earlier version that’s been lost since before Liddell’s copy was given to her.”

A line formed between Brooke’s perfectly manicured eyebrows. “I’ve never heard that theory.”

“It’s not well known, and many believe it to be myth. I can send you a link to the few articles I’ve read.” Natalie had no trouble recounting the periodicals’ names, article titles, or publication dates. Her memory simply worked that way. If she engaged with something once, she didn’t forget it.

Brooke nodded, seemingly content with that answer for now. Natalie wasn’t offended by the need to prove her statement. Over the past few months, she’d come to know Brooke and her desire for concrete answers. Natalie couldn’t say she blamed her. Right about now she’d love some solid solutions to her marriage.

“Natalie’s correct,” Caspar said. “This is a rumored copy, yet it is very much real, and I have a lead on its location.”
