Review: The Danger with Fireworks by Robin Daniels

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Garland's love life took a rocky ride when his roommate started dating the girl he liked. It was inevitable, really. Somehow he always makes friends with "that guy"--the one who can get any girl he wants. It sucks, always feeling like the third wheel. So, when he's offered a position as a summer camp counselor, he jumps at the opportunity. It's the perfect chance to escape... in a place where he's not tied to best-friendship with a chick magnet.

However, from the moment he arrives, Garland realizes that the grass won't be any greener. He meets Chloe, a beautiful, energetic co-worker and they hit it off right away. Naturally, her ex--who's desperate to win her back--happens to be "that guy". Except this time it's different because there's nothing likable about Chloe's ex. And since there's no rule saying Garland has to be best buds with the resident lady bait, he decides it's time to challenge the status quo. For once, he's going to get the girl.

NOTE: This story can be read as a standalone, but it's better if the series is read in order.

My Review

Summer camp. So many words, feelings, stereotypes associated with it! I was surprised it was the setting for Garland’s story, but it was so fun. It definitely gave a summer vibe! There's a great cast of characters, and it was great to see Garland come into his own. The story is told from his perspective only, and I feel like the author nails the male mindset. Chloe is a bit of a spaz and I didn't really know how to take her at first, but she quickly grew on me as she and Garland get to know each other and have fun banter and chemistry. Some misperceptions keep Garland from acting on his feelings, bringing  angst and drama to the friendly dynamic. There's a good balance and steady pace as the antics of the campers and counselors provide a reading experience that is just plain fun.

Review: The Problem with Cupid by Robin Daniels

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

After Evan's relationship fail during Christmas vacation, he heads back to college with a new plan. It's time for a break from dating. He doesn't want to quit the game completely though. Garland, his funny, lovable, down-to-earth roommate, is constantly talking to girls. And never asking them out.

Evan might be on a romantic hiatus but that doesn't mean he can't help his best friend find love. So, when Evan meets Abby in student government class, he trades in his player card for Cupid's bow. She and Garland would be perfect together and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know they'll never hook up without help.

His matchmaking scheme works brilliantly. A little too brilliantly. By the time Garland and Abby start hitting it off, Evan has grown quite fond of her. That's the problem with playing Cupid. If you're not careful, you run the risk of getting shot by your own arrow.

My Review

This book played like a movie in my mind! The author does a great job of making it easy to visualize the characters and their mannerisms, and I love the humorous tone that runs throughout the story. Is there a term for two people who think they have unrequited love for each other but are actually both secretly in love? Whatever it's called, it's one of my favorite tropes! Plenty of hidden yearning and romantic tension. Evan is trying to play it cool, but just can't help himself when it comes to Abby. I love when characters fall hard for someone who isn't their usual type! Abby is hilarious with the things she says that slip past her filter, and she's easy to like. A super fun "new adult" romance! I hope the author continues to write more in this loosely connected series!

Review: The Trouble With Christmas by Robin Daniels

https://amzn.to/2MMzgT7

My rating: 4 stars / I really liked it

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

Chrissy Jensen lives in a town full of Christmas fanatics. Too bad she hates everything about the holiday. Aside from her justifiable grievances, the endless barrage of displays and events is enough to make any girl gag. Nothing has ever been able to thaw her frozen yuletide heart. But when her brother brings a handsome friend home for the holiday, she starts to reconsider her contemptuous attitude. The deliciously yummy house guest LOVES Christmas. Pretending to share his sentiment couldn’t hurt. Right?

Wrong. The sudden personality transplant doesn’t sit well with her best friend Nate. He perpetuates the deception in order to get even, which causes an agonizing dilemma. Now, Chrissy must keep up the charade—with a cheerful disposition—or risk being caught in her lie.

My Review

This story was so fun to read! Full disclosure- I'm kind of over small towns that embrace Christmas pageantry at an unhealthy level, but I chose to read this one since I think this author's writing style is fresh. I really enjoyed the characterization and hidden love angle, and I loved Chrissy's quirky family and best friend Nate especially. It was interesting to see the reactions of Chrissy's friends and family when she joined in the madness and the realizations she comes to after letting go of her grinchiness. I appreciated that the author stayed true to Chrissy's sassy personality and didn't allow her to dissolve into a sugared cliché. Loved the themes of friendship, family, and community as well as the nice balance between humor and romance.

Review: One of the Girls by Robin Daniels

https://amzn.to/31rjSRw

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

FROM ENDZONE TO FRIENDZONE...

Senior Nick Moody is the second string quarterback on Roosevelt High School’s championship football team. He’s crushed on Mia for years, but she doesn’t know he exists. It’s time to come off the bench and into the game. Nick refuses to graduate without getting the girl or the glory.

Mia Ashlock is the remarkably kind cheer captain. She’s a yes girl, and her penchant for people pleasing always leads to bad relationships. After being humiliated in a very public dumping, her teammates decide to break her bad habit with a ban on boyfriends.

When Nick sees a poster, advertising cheer tryouts, he has a crazy idea: quit football and become a cheerleader. It’s perfect! He can get close to Mia and steal the spotlight, using his true and hidden talent—gymnastics. Nick and Mia have instant chemistry, but it does him little good. If Mia’s zero dating rule weren’t bad enough, the team treats him less like boyfriend material and more like one of the girls. Breaching the friendzone will be much harder than he thought.

Content: This book contains kissing along with limited/mild swearing and minimal innuendo/crude humor. No explicit language or references to sex.

My Review

I loved this YA book and the way it looked beyond the surface to what deeper issues the teens were facing. Nick is not just a typical football player- he has hidden skills of gymnastics abilities that he enjoys more than being a benched quarterback, but even more importantly- he is a genuinely nice guy. Aren't those the best heroes? I loved watching him come out of his shell as he does his best to subtly pursue Mia and learn more about himself as he defies the social norms of his school and expectations of his grandfather/coach. Mia is a bit of a doormat in the beginning, but thanks to some overly helpful friends and new relationship with Nick, she also discovers her inner strength and experiences a good amount of growth. A fun book with dialogue and narration that felt authentic (several laugh out loud moments!) and kept me interested in the emotions of the characters.

Ivy Nixon is the student body Vice President at Franklin High School. Each year, the school holds a date auction to raise funds for the senior class graduation party, and this year, Ivy’s in charge. Andy reluctantly agrees to help, but the more time Ivy spends with him, the more her feelings shift from professional to romantic in nature. Or will she find a way to keep him for herself…

Excerpt

For a moment, I forgot what I was doing and leaned into him. Wow, he smelled unbelievably good. Like soap and dryer sheets and something a little sharper that I couldn't identify. I needed to ask him what cologne he wore, because it was incredible. I could smell him all day. Not to mention that his chest was a lot firmer than one would guess, since he hides it under baggy button-down shirts all the time.

Andy cleared his throat and I pulled away. He looked embarrassed again. He really needed to get over that, and I was going to help him, starting right now. "Sorry." I grinned. "You smell amazing. Your cologne is yummy enough to eat. I could sit here and sniff you for the rest of the class."

He choked on his spit and quickly put his fist over his mouth to stifle his laughter. "Please don't." He was trying to sound horrified, but his face gave him away. He appreciated the compliment.

"Okay." I threw my hands up in surrender. "But fair warning...if I'm having a bad day, I may lean over and smell your neck to induce a calming effect. When that happens, don't punch me."

Andy shook his head, bewildered by the turn our conversation had taken. "I'll try not to punch you, if you decide to randomly press your face against my neck."

"When you say it like that, I sound like a psycho stalker."

"Psycho and stalker are your words, not mine. But, if the shoe fits..." He trailed off, and I smacked him on the arm.

"Ouch!" Andy rubbed the place I'd just hit. "I'm only kidding. I don't think you're a psycho stalker. I've never seen any indication that you're a stalker. You're more likely a plain old psycho." He was grinning nice and big now, and I couldn't help but grin back.

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops

Launch - Note from the Author

...If you enjoyed The Perfect Series, you’ll like this one. The books have a very similar feel: funny characters, witty banter, hot guys, young love and lots of shenanigans. I poured a lot of time and effort into these books, as the storyline is much more complicated than I’ve attempted before. It was a continuity nightmare, but I’m so pleased with the outcome. Fate & Fortune and Kismet & Karma are fun, lighthearted stories. Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Robin

Heidi Reads... - Review

"What a fun ride! I loved this group of friends and their distinct personalities. The dynamics of their sibling relationships, friendships, and romances unfolded throughout the book and I loved getting to know them. . . . I loved this creative YA duo of books and can't wait for more from the author!"

Mythical Books - Review

"...this story totally rocks! . . . It was quite a while since I gave 5 stars to a story. . . . Mixing love interests with funny situations and witty dialogues (and most important natural), Mrs. Daniels crafted stories which will captivate the readers and make them dream of or remember the sweet thrill of the first love."

Becky on Books - Excerpt

Fate & Fortune - PAIGE

Her eyes twinkled with mischief as she blurted out, “Word on the street is you’re the one who spray painted Jason Marcos has a small wiener on the water tower last night.”

I gasped. “I would never! Wait, did that actually happen?”

Kennedy’s grin widened, and she nodded emphatically. “Sure did. There was a comical drawing as well, but the mayor already got a maintenance guy up there to paint over it. Doesn’t matter, though. Half the town posted pictures, so everyone’s seen it.”

"I love this story. A little mystery, romance and so much fun. I can't wait to read the follow up story. . . . I highly recommend this book to others." - Fate & Fortune

"As with book 1, I love this story. How fun to read the story from different characters perspectives. The same things happen but getting to see them from other characters changes the whole story so much." - Kismet & Karma

Fate & Fortune – BRYCE

Cody crossed his arms, waiting for me to honor the agreement, so I gave the lamp a quick polish. He and Eric grew quiet. I faked disinterest, but secretly I was hoping something would happen. After five long seconds without any magic, I put the lamp back in my locker. “Sorry, boys, no genie.”

“Too bad,” Eric grumbled. “I could use a billion dollars.” He whipped off his shirt and started to change.

Among the Reads - Excerpt

Fate & Fortune – PAIGE

Eric sat up and squinted. He stared for a second before shaking his head. “Those aren’t mine.”

“Are you sure?” I asked skeptically. He snatched the paper from my hand, and I watched his lips move while he read the note to himself. Then he quirked an eyebrow.

He scoffed and nodded toward the bottle. “Um, yeah. Why would I leave you a bottle with a note in it?” Then he waved the scrap of paper at me. “Not to mention that this is a poem. You honestly think I would write you a poem?”

Dani Reviews Things - Spotlight

Harlie's Books - Review

"...I have found a new author to stalk when it comes to YA. Her writing is crisp, updated, funny, snarky, real, at times swoon-worthy but above all, relatable. I instantly fell in love with Bryce and Paige. If this series isn’t the typical friends to lovers for YA, I don’t know what is. And to top it off, it is set in a small town. Ms. Daniels nails the setting, the school, and the emotions that most teenagers deal with now. . . . Do yourself a favor and pick these two books up. Ms. Daniels has a written a very humorous, swoon-worthy, relatable YA romance that will leave you wanting more."

Colorimetry - Excerpt

Fate & Fortune – PAIGE

“Jason keeps looking over at us, and Reese gives him a nasty face every time he does it. Am I a bad person if that makes me want to antagonize her even more?”

“Yes. But I’m a bad person, too, so I think that’s a fabulous idea,” I replied.

“In that case, get over here.” Bryce reached out and pulled me sideways onto his lap. Then he whispered against my jaw, close enough to graze it with his lips. I had to suppress a shiver. “Look at Reese and pretend I’m saying something romantic.”

"How cute are these books?! SO cute. And what a clever idea by the author! I loved everything about this two part book series. The characters were so well defined and individual. Their personalities were strong and I felt like I knew each one of them. The whole story played out just like a movie in my head. I LOVE when that happens."

"What a creative tale! I love a story that can take me back in time, deliver a solid plot, and have strong, lifelike characters. . . . The characters rocked the book. The camaraderie, friendly banter, loyalty, and slight mystery gave this story a firm foundation for the flirting and drama and I adored the way everything played out." - Fate & Fortune

"I absolutely loved this book, because honestly, I wasn't quite ready to let this group go, and enjoyed seeing the behind-the-scenes events. The reader is treated to some complicated relationships, hilarious moments, scheming, and more. I wondered at first could possibly make Fate & Fortune better, but knowing the whole picture really did it for me.

This is one creative, highly entertaining, and FUN set and I would definitely recommend it to lovers of YA sweet romance." - Kismet & Karma

Wishful Endings - Excerpt

Kismet & Karma – ERIC

“Who’s Amy?” Genie asked. “You said Cody was your brother, right?”

“Amy is Paige’s bestie. Cody and Bryce are twins.”

“Identical?”

“Hardly.”

“That’s not true,” I said. “There’s definitely a family resemblance. Especially when Ken’s standing between them. If Cody and Bryce had a baby, it’d look like Kennedy.” That was sure to get me smacked, but I couldn’t help it. Getting Ken worked up was a hobby for all of us.

"...if you're looking for a high-school story filled with an endearing group of characters, their antics, and some romance, you'll find a lot to enjoy! The author has a very readable and engaging writing style, and I love the early setting of a small-town fair, as well as the odd but fun ways the romance plays out for the main characters. Fate & Fortune is a cute and entertaining YA read!" - Fate & Fortune

"I enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at the plot of Fate & Fortune, as well as the complete conclusion you don't quite get in book one alone. There's a particular scene near the end (not quite the last) that's especially delightful in terms of setting, romance, and friendship. As part two of a clever duology, Kismet & Karmais a charmer!" - Kismet & Karma

Kismet & Karma – GENIE

He waited a second longer before he ruined everything by giving me a wicked smile. If a smile could speak, this one would be saying, “Finally, I will honor you with my kiss.”

Ha! Fat chance now, buddy. He wasted a perfectly good opportunity just so he could toy with me. I waited until his head tilted forward, then ducked down and slipped under his arm. The motion threw him off balance, and he stepped back far enough for me to open the truck. I pulled on the handle, jumped inside, and slammed the door in one swift move.

"Oh, the magic and romance that goes on in this book! . . . The story is told from each of their points-of-view, giving you great insight into their innermost thoughts. I really like both of the characters. They just felt real to me, which doesn't always happen. I loved all of their friends, actually, and wish I could go back in time to be their age again and hang out with that crew. They're so close-knit and so good to each other, no matter what happens. I just loved it." - Fate & Fortune

"Again, I just love all of these kids and totally would have loved hanging out with them back in high school. . . . This series is so much fun to read and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to do so. And I hope we hear more from them in the future." - Kismet & Karma

Kismet & Karma – AMY

I grabbed the phone and ran into my bathroom. “Okay,” I answered, shoving my toothbrush into my mouth. I continued speaking while I scrubbed. “You should probably come up with an alternate location, just in case.” My words were muffled by toothpaste foam.

“Are you brushing your teeth?” Eric sounded amused.

“I’m in a hurry,” I replied, then spit and rinsed.

Mel's Shelves - Review

"I love a good teen drama, and this one delivers! . . . There are some funny moments, as well as some touching ones. When I finished reading it, I couldn't wait to get started on the second book!" - Fate & Fortune

"This story is told from several different perspectives, which made it interesting to see what the characters were really up to in the first book. Even though the group is close knit, there are still some secrets that need to come out. It's a fun series that I enjoyed reading!" - Kismet & Karma

Teatime and Books - Spotlight

"This was a fun read full of families, best friends, and teen romance. Everyone in the group of friends had some possible romance happening, but this story just focuses on Paige and Bryce." - Fate & Fortune

A Backwards Story - Spotlight

Remembrancy - Review

"I couldn’t help but like this group of friends and family as they joke around, protect each other, and push each other to become better people. But like Bryce and Paige, I was sure there was something else going on." - Fate & Fortune

"Robin Daniels weaves this story so well with the other, you will not want to read one without the other (but definitely start with Fate & Fortune)." - Kismet & Karma

My Review

5 stars / It was amazing

What a fun ride! I loved this group of friends and their distinct personalities. The dynamics of their sibling relationships, friendships, and romances unfolded throughout the book and I loved getting to know them. Bryce and Paige were so likeable that I couldn't help but root for them to get together. The ways that they were given opportunities to draw closer to each other were fun and obviously contrived- and because Paige and Bryce suspected someone was behind it all and not buying into the mystical but still playing along, it made it believable. They had amazing chemistry and there is just the right balance of angst, hope, and romance.

The second book revealed exactly how Eric, Kennedy, and Genie schemed and brought their two friends together. More complicated dynamics are revealed, including a secret romance and unrequited crush. This book showed the story from several perspectives, all in first person POV, but I liked it because it really got me into the heads of the characters and helped me connect with them. I loved this creative YA duo of books and can't wait for more from the author!

The Cast of Kismet & Karma

Meet the cast of Kismet & Karma – personalities revealed through their astrological signs!

Paige – Taurus (April 24th) Paige proved her reliability, patience and devotion during her relationship with Jason. Like a true Taurus, she hates the sudden changes and complications in her love life. Pair that with her stubborn streak, and it’s no wonder she needs help to recognize what’s right in front of her; a gift in the form of her greatest passion—novel worthy romance.

Bryce – Virgo (September 15th) As a Virgo he’s loyal, kind and hardworking. He’s always thought his practicality and desire to stay out of the spotlight were good things. But now he wonders if they’ve only kept Paige from noticing him. Bryce has started to realize that if he wants to get the girl, he must cast aside his careful nature. Good thing he has a magic Genie to help him do just that.

Amy – Aquarius (February 11th) She’s original, independent, a good listener and cares deeply about others. This makes her a great best friend and the only voice of reason Paige will listen to. But Amy’s also inherited some of the less attractive Aquarius attributes; namely her tendency to be temperamental and emotionally withdrawn. Lucky for Amy, there’s a special guy who’s crazy about her, flaws and all.

Eric – Scorpio (November 12th) Eric is a true friend. It’s one of the many positive traits held by Scorpios. He’s passionate, dedicated, resourceful and determined to help his baby sister. Of course, that might be easier if he wasn’t so distrusting and secretive. Let’s not forget the fact that he’s a tinsy bit jealous by nature. But hey, some women find that sort of thing attractive. And if that’s not enough, he’s got those dazzling dimples for backup.

Kennedy – Leo (July 31st) Ken’s a Leo, through and through. She loves theater, hanging with her friends, expensive clothes and being admired. But as the baby of the group, she often feels ignored or left out. It’s her absolute biggest pet peeve. Ken’s admittedly a little self-centered though she’s got a big, warm, generous heart. Fate will soon put her creativity and passion to good use, and she’s all for it.

Cody – Sagittarius (Despite his September 15th birthdate.) Clearly, Cody was born under the wrong sign. Extremely extroverted, he’s the total opposite of his very Virgo twin—definitely an honorary Sagittarius. Cody’s constant antics and humor are charming, which makes the group willing to overlook his impatient and sometimes tactless ways. Optimistic and enthusiastic, he’ll do anything to achieve his goal: getting Bryce to pull his head out of his butt and man up.

Genie – Aries (April 1st) As an April Fools baby, it’s fitting that Genie be the most essential part of such an outrageous plan. But like all Aries, she’s confident and optimistic that she can get the job done. Frustrated by people who don’t use their talents, she jumps at the chance to showcase her own. Sure, Bryce often brings out her aggressive, moody and impatient side, but she likes a good challenge. Plus, who’d have thought she’d gain so many good (and hot) friends?

This cast is super fun and you’re sure to get some good laughs. Fate and Fortune (Book One) shares the crazy week the as told by Paige and Bryce. But if you want the REAL story, check out Kismet and Karma (Book Two) to see how everything actually went down.

Excerpt

(BRYCE)

THE PLAYERS: Bryce-The Lovesick Hero, Janelle (AKA Mom)-Bryce’s Mother, Cody-Bryce’s Twin Brother, Kennedy-Bryce’s Little Sister.
Paige and I used to be closer. I think she might have liked me back in middle school. But like Cody said, I was a chicken, so I never acted on it. By the time I’d become confident enough to say something, Jason Marcos had stolen her from me.
I parked Mr. Martin’s car in front of the house and walked into the kitchen. The first thing I did was reach for the plate of cookies. “I hope you plan on washing those hands before you eat,” my mother warned, even though her back was to me. People joke about parents having eyes in the back of their head, but my mom does—for real.
“Yes, I plan on washing them. I was just testing you,” I lied, heading for the sink. She scooted over to give me some room.
“Did you make it to the door this time?” she asked.
“Mom,” I hissed quietly. “You can’t ask me stuff like that when Kennedy’s home. She has ultrasonic hearing when it comes to gossip.”
“Relax; Kennedy isn’t here. She left with Cody.”
“I thought Cody was going to work?”
“Huh. She told me she was going to the café. Maybe he was dropping her off before he headed over.”
“Probably,” I replied, then paused before answering her question. “I didn’t even bother getting out of the car.” I sighed as I dried my hands and took a seat at the counter. “It’s hopeless.”
“That’s not the confident, optimistic son I gave birth to.” She frowned.
“No, that guy’s name is Cody. I got all the maturity, and he got all the confidence.”
Mom leaned on the counter and grabbed a cookie off the plate. “Why don’t you two make a trade? Some of his confidence for a little of your drive and determination.”
I chuckled. “It’s not only a confidence thing. It’s more about timing. Paige clearly isn’t over Jason yet. No matter how much I like her, nothing is going to happen until she is. I need some sort of sign.”
There was a gleam in her eye as she drummed her fingers on the counter. “You know, your dad and I went to see the psychic at the carnival last night. You could go tonight and have Madam Vorski read your fortune. Maybe she can tell you when Paige will be ready for you to make a move.”
I paused, sandwich inches from my mouth, then blanched before saying, “First of all, don’t say ever say the phrase make a move again. It sounds weird and gross coming from you. Second, you’re kidding, right? You want me to spend my hard-earned money on some scam artist? Who are you, and what have you done with my mother?”
Mom laughed. “No, I want you to spend my money.” She reached into her pocket, pulled out a twenty, and placed it on the counter in front of me. “It was kind of fun.”
“You’re seriously giving me twenty bucks to use on a psychic? You, the lady who makes me pay for my own gas, insurance, and cell phone.”
“Are you calling me cheap?” She frowned.
I gave her a dry look. “Are you denying it?”
