A second chance to set the record straight, and rekindle a lost love.

Wisconsin, 1931—Buck Wilson refuses to accept failure as his reward for all he has sacrificed, but he’s kept secrets for too long to be believed. With his freedom on the line, there’s only one person he trusts to mine for the true story: the woman he left one month before their wedding.

All investigative journalist Caroline Wagoneer wants is to shine a light on the truth wherever darkness threatens to obscure it. Which is the only reason she agrees to help her ex-fiance when he begs for her to go undercover in Crow’s Nest. What she discovers paints Buck in a whole new light.

With lies and rumor hemming them in, Buck and Caroline realize their love may be doomed on the altar of altruism.

Unless love can truly conquer all.

Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge.

Guest Post from Author Danielle Grandinetti

I love giving my heroines unique careers, which is especially fun because the beginning of the 20th century opened so many doors. However, because of unemployment, those doors slipped shut during the 1930s, adding a twist of built-in suspense.

Caroline is the heroine in Investigation of a Journalist. She is an undercover investigative journalist.

The history of female undercover journalists goes back to reporters like Nellie Bly, perhaps best known for going undercover in an insane asylum in 1887. Bly's story has always intrigued me, so I loved the idea of creating a female character who also worked as an undercover journalist. As I researched, I learned that Bly was part of a generation of female reporters known as "stunt reporters," a term that had faded by the time Caroline's story would take place.

Journalism was an area hit hard by unemployment. Women were among the first to be let go because it was thought they were stealing men’s jobs, men who had fought in WWI and had returned to their “rightful place.” Married women, especially, were expected to be home. Unmarried women were reluctantly allowed jobs, but, again, as the Great Depression worsened, they were the first to be laid off because the expectation was men had families to support, and they would support the women.

However, the unemployment rate hit 50% in Chicago, where Caroline worked. Desperation due to loss of job and home created other problems. Theft, alcohol abuse, and other vices spread. Since it would have been unlikely Caroline would have had a job at this point, I created the character Ali Di Stasio and her journalism agency of female reporters.

Because women continued to be journalists throughout the 1930s, the tenacity they needed to exist in a male-dominated career served them well in finding a story, digging up coruption, and shedding a light on the evils in the world. They were fearless women, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to write about one.

In fact, writing about just one female journalist isn’t enough … I have a brand-new historical romantic mystery/suspense series in the works. More to come about Ali and her journalists in 2025.

Christmas should be a time of wonder and celebration, but the obstacles each faces seem insurmountable. Even, at times, life-threatening.

Favorite Christmas memories of each story's main characters and individual story covers

Emory’s favorite Christmas memory was baking cookies with her mother and her sister, Autumn. She loved to taste the batter, and after they’d finished decorating, she would have a play-fight with them. In “Mistletoe and Mayhem in the Rockies,” Emory recreates this tradition and it’s the catalyst that brings her love of Christmas back.

Hunter’s favorite time at Christmas was Christmas night after everything was done. While most hated that Christmas was over, he loved to sit in front of the tree and stare at the lights, reflecting on God’s serenity. The peacefulness calmed him. His favorite hymn is “Silent Night” because it was his mother’s.

In “Just a Gilbert Blythe Kind of Girl,” Lucy’s favorite Christmas memories are the years her dad took her to see her mother play Anne of Green Gables in The Avonlea Christmas Show. That sparked a desire in Lucy to follow in her mother’s footsteps, especially after her mother dies in a plane crash trying to come home from New York to spend Christmas with them. Which means that, this Christmas, when she is offered the opportunity to play the same role on the same stage that her mother played, she will finally be able to honor the best memory she has. Until she discovers that memories aren’t always true …

August has good memories of growing up and spending the holidays with his parents and older brothers and sister. His one Christmas wish has never come true, though. Until this year, when he dares to hope that the girl next door might stop dreaming about a man who doesn’t exist and realize that everything she has ever wanted is standing right in front of her.

Nick’s favorite Christmas memory is listening to Grandma’s stories of Christmas past. Every Christmas Eve, after dinner, the family would sit by the fire, the room warm with the scent of pine and oranges. Grandma would pull Nick close and share vivid tales of growing up in the old country—the handmade gifts, simple meals, and candles lit in the window for those far away. Her stories were filled with the joy of simpler times, where the true meaning of the season was in the togetherness of family. Those evenings shaped Nick’s view of Christmas as a time of reflection and deep connection although, by the time he meets Joy in “Love Across Time,” his feelings toward the holiday season have definitely changed…

Joy’s favorite Christmas memory was baking cookies with her grandfather. Every year, they’d spend the afternoon in his cozy kitchen, the counters dusted with flour and the air thick with the smell of vanilla and cinnamon. He taught her how to roll out the dough and cut out shapes—trees, stars, and angels—before carefully placing them on the trays. Joy loved how her grandfather always snuck a little dough to taste, winking as if it were their shared secret. As the cookies baked, they’d sit together, sipping hot cocoa, waiting for the oven timer to ding. Those quiet moments, filled with laughter and the warmth of tradition, taught Joy that Christmas wasn’t just about the decorations but the love shared through simple acts of togetherness.

When we meet Porsha in “Where My Heart Belongs,” we learn she hates Christmas. I know (as Porsha would say). Before the fateful Christmas when her father left, Porsha’s favorite memories were the Christmas mornings as a family where she and her parents would gather by the tree in their pajamas and open presents while songs like, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” played in the background. Now, her favorite memories are the first Christmas spent with Grant when she found her faith in the ice chapel… and the extra special event the following Christmas Eve.

Grant’s favorite Christmas memories are the ones spent with his family at his parent's log cabin. Those memories include shared laughter over turkey dinner, singing Christmas carols by the fire, and nibbling home-baked Christmas cookies. Tradition dictates one present each on Christmas Eve, which turns into a favorite Christmas memory for Grant when he gifts Porsha with a birch bark scroll, the words inside asking her out on their first date. That favorite memory is rivaled only by the precious one they share the year after (insert winky face, as Porsha would say).

With no heir to claim his family's land, Eve's father did what any loving father would do. He arranged for her betrothal. But this wasn't just any betrothal. What’s On Their Christmas List This Year?

The men and women in the five stories that make up A Weary World Rejoices all have items on their Christmas wish list this year, some known and others secret. Here’s a sneak peek into what those lists might contain…

“The Christmas Kiss” by Stacy Monson

All they want for Christmas…

Christmas has been less cheer and more bah humbug for both Piper Devine and Finn McNally. Focused on restoring Piper’s store, Pip’s Divine Chocolates, after a break-in, they wonder what other catastrophes this normally festive season might bring. Shopping for gifts? No time. Planning a big meal? When?

Secretly, each has just one thing on their Christmas list. Smitten with the candy store owner, Finn prays for her to find the Hope and Peace he knows so well, and that she’ll recognize the future he wants to share with her. Piper longs for more of the stability and comfort she’s found in her unexpected friendship with the handsome property manager who took a chance on her and her dream.

The hectic season has had its issues, but Piper and Finn fervently hope there’s enough of the Christmas spirit left for them to celebrate—together.

“Unremarkable Sue” by Eleanor Bertin:

Every year, Evelyn Hardy had given Sue Roundell a book for Christmas. Always precisely wrapped, presented on Christmas Eve, and signed in her copperplate handwriting, “with love, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hardy.”

But the Christmas Walter was in the psychiatric ward was different. This book was hastily wrapped in, of all unholy things, Santa paper, and presented on the day Evelyn had brought Walter home from the hospital.

After wishing the Hardys a merry Christmas, Sue tore off the paper. Other years, the books had been chosen to help Sue grow as a young Christian. This year, Sue stopped short, staring at the bright plaid cover of the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. This meant something. Evelyn Hardy did nothing without careful thought.

Sue squeezed the thick volume against her chest, not sure whether to laugh or cry. She had an inkling what it meant, especially after the conversation she had just had with the older woman. But then Sue cringed, thinking of Glen standing in the kitchen hearing everything Sue had blathered on about. She may have outgrown her childhood clumsiness, but her tongue hadn’t received the memo.

“Love, Christmas” by Johnnie Alexander

In my short story, “Love, Christmas,” widowed Shannon Tracey gives an anonymous Christmas gift to Cassidy, a young college student whose only sister died in a tragic auto accident. They’d met last Christmas Eve when Mac Calloway, the solitary cemetery caretaker who “never means to eavesdrop,” felt called by God to host a Christmas Eve dinner for the grieving.

Though Mac still mostly keeps to himself, he isn’t as lonely as he used to be. This Christmas, Shannon has invited Mac to join her, Cassidy, and a few other guests for a holiday feast. Dessert will be a home-baked triple-layer German chocolate cake with a handful of lit candles to celebrate Mac’s birthday. It’s not important that she doesn’t know his age—only that he won’t be spending his special day alone.

“Gifting Christmas” by Angela D. Meyer

Barry’s gift to Karen is a new snow globe for her collection which she started as a child. He located someone who creates one of a kind, made to order globes, and commissioned one containing a small replica of the Applewood Hill Bed and Breakfast – which from the moment they signed the papers and took ownership of became a symbol of hope for them as their marriage healed.

Karen and Barry have been debating throughout their surprise pregnancy whether or not to find out the sex of their soon to be born child. Karen has held her ground about waiting, but decided that for her Christmas gift to him, she would share what she found out at her last ultrasound. He wasn’t able to go with her, so it was the perfect opportunity to plan her surprise.

“The Back Door Christmas Tour Company” by Sara Davison:

There’s only one thing Rav Temauri, the main character in “The Back Door Christmas Tour Company,” wants for Christmas, and that is connection to family. Kind of hard to wrap up in a box. When he receives an unexpected letter from his brother letting him know that he won’t be home for Christmas, Rav makes a highly uncharacteristic move. With zero planning or forethought, he jumps on a plane and flies halfway around the world in an attempt to find roots and an anchor for his life. When he finds himself part of an eclectic group of people all searching for something like he is, Rav ends up receiving far more for Christmas than he could have ever asked for or imagined.

While these men and women may or may not have gotten what they thought they wanted for Christmas, all received something of inestimable worth—joy in the midst of challenges and a weary, troubled world.

Which is our hope and prayer for every reader who blesses us by taking the time to read this or any other of The Mosaic Collection books!

May you experience the gifts of joy and peace this Christmas and always,

Stacy, Eleanor, Johnnie, Angela, and Sara
