Book Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway: This Christmas by Laurie Winter #TCPrism

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

This Christmas
(The North Star Series #1)
By Laurie Winter
Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Paperback & ebook, 240Pages
October 20, 2020

'A beautiful story of loss and new love, set in a snow-capped mountain ski resort town.'

Celia Batista waited a long time for all three of her sons to be together for Christmas. But after one of her identical twins disappears without a trace, Celia must rely on Police Captain Luke Veldkamp for help. Despite Luke’s accusations that her other twin son is involved with organized crime, she falls for the handsome, Stetson wearing cop.

Luke Veldkamp is facing his first Christmas after the loss of his wife, working nonstop to avoid the holidays and his grief. His daughter, who’d moved home to care for her mom before her passing, pushes him to face his pain. Luke pushes back, telling her to return to college and regain her own life. If his own strife isn’t enough, the mission to locate the missing son of his beautiful neighbor grows more personal than any other case.

While Luke and Celia fight to keep their families from falling apart, they find comfort and strength in one another. And when love blooms between their children, Luke and Celia’s own relationship takes root and grows. But Celia is used to living on her own terms, and loving a man who has isolated his heart is a risk too great. Now, Luke must either confront his emotions or face a life without the woman he’s come to love.

Excerpt

Celia crossed the street and headed toward the city park, which had the best wooded trails for running. The city usually did a good job keeping them clear of snow, and today was no exception. Her police detail parked in the lot, and she sent him a quick wave before stepping onto the path. Once free from surveillance, she loosened up and picked up her pace. The terrain sloped upward, and she fought to keep her breath steady. She wasn’t a fast runner by any means, and most of her students could probably beat her in a footrace, but for her, running was safer than skiing, as well as cheaper.

As she reached the halfway point of the loop, where an empty bench sat waiting for tired hikers, footsteps sounded from behind. Turning her head, she saw a large man about ten feet away. He had the ugliest face she’d ever seen. Her surprise turned to revulsion, and then to recognition. This was one of the men from Luke’s photographs.

Her heart beat increased in speed, along with her running pace. With fumbling gloved fingers, she reached inside the hoodie pocket for her cell phone. It slipped out of her grasp and onto the ground. She skidded to a stop and picked up her phone with a trembling hand. The sound of heavy breathing made bile rise in her throat. If she didn’t make it back to the beginning of the trail and out into the open soon, she might never get back.

Review & Giveaway: Standout Saints: Church History Heroes from Around the World by Sierra Wilson

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

From prophets to pioneers, from songwriters to scientists, Standout Saints: Church History Heroes from Around the World presents the fascinating true stories of twenty women and twenty men from Church history. Each one-page biography describes impressive achievements and shares stories of great faith. Readers will encounter well-known and beloved Saints such as Joseph Smith and Eliza R. Snow along with lesser-known heroes from around the world such as Hu Wei-I, who miraculously translated the Book of Mormon into Chinese, and Mere Mete Whaanga, a prominent Maori woman who helped the Church spread into New Zealand. In addition, Standout Saints includes uplifting quotes, a Church history timeline, and resources for further study.

The courage and faith of these Saints made them stand out from the world, and this educational and inspiring book helps young readers know that they too can stand out.

My Review

I loved learning more about the personal stories of individuals in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from all over the world! They show how regular everyday people can make an important difference in the lives of those around them, and how faith helps us overcome our struggles. The illustrations are vibrant and full of life and personality. With 40 spotlights, there are several well-known names of pioneers and even more that I wasn't familiar with but am excited to learn more about. This is a great book for kids and adults alike, providing inspiration and encouragement to go out and be "standout saints" ourselves.

Book Tour, Review & Giveaway: The Highlander's Hidden Heart by Julie Coulter Bellon

My rating: 5 stars / It was amazing

http://www.amazon.comhttp://www.amazon.comhttp://www.barnesandnoble.comhttp://www.bookdepository.comhttp://www.goodreads.com

Synopsis

A duke's daughter. A Highland warrior. And a love worth fighting for.

Lady Elizabeth, daughter of the Duke of Barrington, has done her best to secure an advantageous match, but a shy nature, combined with a stutter, hasn't helped her cause. After two Seasons, her father won’t wait any longer and promises her to a man she despises. There doesn’t seem to be anything Elizabeth can do beyond wish for a freedom she’ll never have---until a charming Highlander appears and makes all her dreams of a love match seem within her reach.

Alec Ramsay unexpectedly inherits an earldom and must leave his beloved Scottish Highlands to present himself in London and settle the estate affairs. After meeting his new neighbor, Lady Elizabeth, he feels a connection to her that he’s never felt with any other woman. Alec makes every effort to further their acquaintance, but soon finds out that Elizabeth could be swept out of his reach before they have a chance to explore the feelings between them. With everything at stake, can he risk all for a chance at love−−before it’s too late?

(Originally a novella in the Timeless Romance collection, now a full-length novel with new twists, turns, and romance!)

 My Review

There is an instant connection between Elizabeth and Alec, and they made each other feel comfortable and able to be themselves. And that accent! It's so fun to be able "hear" his Scottish brogue in my head as I read. Elizabeth's stutter drains her confidence and prevents her from standing up to her parents, resulting in being stuck with a suitor that puts up a good front, but is a horrible person. His unkindness to Elizabeth provides the necessary conflict for Alec to come to her rescue, which endears him to her even more. Their affection grows swiftly and I loved their chemistry! This author is skilled at enhancing a short story into a full length novel and I thoroughly enjoyed all the additional scenes and depth to the plot, characters, and their relationships. I loved the satisfying conclusion as Elizabeth and Alec overcome the obstacles to their relationship and future happiness.

Dragonflies at Night:
More Than a Love Story
By Anne Marie Bennett
Women's Fiction, Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 365 Pages
September 22, 2020 by KaleidoSoul Media

A dragonfly brings a mother’s love to a grieving daughter.

Meet Savannah, the thirty-something owner of Life Celebrations, a party planning business. Despite losing both parents as a teenager, Savannah is creating a positive life for herself, surrounded by friends and co-workers who are now her family. But she also has a secret—as much as she wants to settle down and have children, she is afraid to, for fear of getting cancer and having to leave them without their mother, as she herself was left behind years ago.

Meet Deirdre Rose, Savannah’s mother. She continues to watch over Savannah, who feels deeply connected to her mother whenever she sees a dragonfly.

Now meet Ben, a thirty-something recording artist who is good-looking, talented, and a household name. Despite his fame, Ben is lonely. He trusts few people because it seems everyone wants something from him instead of getting to know who he really is.

Savannah and Ben cross paths when they meet at a yoga retreat in the Massachusetts Berkshires. They are drawn to each other’s creativity and outlook on life. She sees beyond his celebrity and he admires her strength in what she’s had to overcome.

What happens when the retreat ends and they go their separate ways? Will they be able to make a long distance relationship work? Can Savannah put aside her fears, and will Ben allow himself to be truly vulnerable?

Above all . . . what message do Deirdre Rose and Dragonfly have for both of them?

Guest Post from Author Anne Marie Bennett

A Thing About Libraries

I have loved books and reading, and anything to do with books and reading, since I was a little girl.  In fact, my mother loved to tell the story of how, when I was 5 years old, she began reading me The Wizard of Oz, a few chapters at a time. Then one night when she was sick and couldn’t read to me, I picked up the book and finished it myself!

We didn’t have a lot of extra money back then, but the library was free! I still remember that awestruck feeling—me in my prettiest dress and saddle shoes, walking through those large wooden doors, holding my mom’s hand, and surrounded by what felt like a complete and sparkling galaxy of books. And I could take home any five that I wanted! It felt miraculous.

And you know what? Libraries still feel miraculous to me!

I remember my first time in the library at Southern Connecticut State University back in 1978. A whole new library to explore!  And when I tentatively asked the librarian at the massive front desk how many books I could check out, I can vividly recall the feeling of utter joy and expansiveness when she shrugged and said, “No limit.”

NO LIMIT??

I took her up on that offer, believe me! I spent hours in that library, combing the shelves for books about my passion for early childhood education, gifted education, spirituality, music, children’s literature, writing, and of course- new fiction.

Today I’m thinking more about libraries because there’s a pandemic happening right now, and our library has been closed for what seems like an eternity.  I can pick up books curbside, but I truly miss everything about our the inside of our library… and I hope never to take it for granted again.

Do you have a favorite library? A favorite librarian? Share it here! I’d love to know.

His hand reached out and touched her sleeve. His warmth sank in, a tease of spring after a cold winter, and she wanted to lean into that, but she halted and met his gaze.

“Former friendship? You’re revoking my friendship card?” His eyes twinkled.

In spite of everything that had gone wrong that day, laughter bubbled up. “I guess I have to tape it back together and make sure it has a safe place in your wallet.”

“Ha. You need to laugh more often. Your laugh lines are rusty. See, there’s a bit of rust coming off now.”
