“Don’t talk to me about love,” she challenged.
“Right.” Impatience put an edge to his light, careless words. “Because what would a frivolous, reckless cowboy like me know about something as consequential and enduring as love?”
She was only saying what needed to be said. What they both already knew. Couldn’t he see that? She whispered, “I can’t be who you need.”
“Funny.” One corner of his mouth lifted. There was nothing easy or indifferent about his half grin. “I only ever wanted you to be you.”
