Synopsis

When colonial Williamsburg explodes like a powder keg on the eve of the American Revolution, Lady Elisabeth "Liberty" Lawson is abandoned by her fiance and suspected of being a spy for the hated British. No one comes to her aid save the Patriot Noble Rynallt, a man with formidable enemies of his own. Liberty is left with a terrible choice. Will the Virginia belle turned lacemaker side with the radical revolutionaries, or stay true to her English roots? And at what cost?

Historical romance favorite Laura Frantz is back with a suspenseful story of love, betrayal, and new beginnings. With her meticulous eye for detail and her knack for creating living, breathing characters, Frantz continues to enchant historical fiction readers who long to feel they are a part of the story.

My Review

Wow. This is a book that kept me thinking about it long after I finished. The pace is somewhat slow, but steady as the characters are developed and events occur that lead us to the heart of the story. The historical details are ones to savor as the world of Colonial Virginia is richly laid out and I felt like I could step right into the setting. It was fascinating to witness the shift Elizabeth experiences from opulence to desperate circumstances, although her faith prevented her from feeling truly desperate. I admired her fortitude in making her own way as seamstress and lacemaker, and the change of her name to Liberty marked an important transition in her life. The details of  the turbulence and politics of the country as it heads into war made me apprehensive for Liberty and Noble and I worried for the upheaval that would inevitably disrupt their relationship. Their romance is as slow-building as the plot, being held back because of Noble's patriotic politics and Liberty's background as a Tory, but the anticipation builds and it is worth the wait! I loved their sweet moments together and the sacrifices they make for each other. I can't imagine the fullness of the courage and grit that these Patriots must have had to stay strong and hold to their convictions. This book made the revolution really come to life and made me ponder the gravity of what our forefathers (and foremothers) did to prepare the way for our country. It made me consider that the movers and shakers of the time were really just regular people in extraordinary circumstances, but there were also countless other regular citizens supporting the cause that aren't remembered by name but sacrificed as well. Highly recommend!

Doesn’t he get that she’s blind?

Barrel racer Amberley James wants to join the premier rodeo circuit more than anything, but she faces the ultimate hurdle when she loses her eyesight to a rare genetic condition. All she’d ever wanted seems out of reach. Giving up is the only option…until her best friend and local hero Jared Cade steps in. The last thing she wants is Jared’s help. But his persistence at encouraging her to get back in the saddle is ridiculously annoying. And undeniably inspiring…

Excerpt

“Amberley.” Jared breathed her name like an invocation, barely breaking their kiss.
“Hmm?” She threaded her fingers his crisp hair, unable to open her eyes.
His lips slid across her jaw, nibbling her earlobe. “You’re beautiful, babe.”
Babe?
He called all of his girls babe. Especially when he couldn’t remember their names.
Tension locked up every inch of her. She propped an eye open. Then the other. Despite her
lack of vision, she could see this disastrous moment clearly. In minutes, he’d gone from
treating her like a child to seducing her like one of his flings. And she was neither.
She leaned away. “Jared!” Sparks continued exploding along the skin his mouth explored.
She pushed against his hard chest. “Stop.”
He lifted his head slowly and gazed down at her. For the first time, she felt glad she couldn’t
read his expression. His hold loosened and she wiggled back until her spine bumped against
the stall’s wooden slats. Her chest expanded, drawing in a shaky breath.
“Why did you do that?” she demanded.
“I wanted to—to—” He faltered, suddenly uncertain, his usual brash confidence gone.
“Comfort you,” he finished quickly.
“Comfort me?” she echoed, not sure if she’d heard him right.
“You were crying and I felt…”
“Sorry for me?” She pushed to her feet on trembling limbs, her entire body aflame. Her
spine pulled tight as a rope. “You kissed me out of pity?”
He stood, too, and his hands waved. “No.”
“What, then? So, you don’t feel sorry for me?”
“I do, it’s just—”
“Just what?” she demanded.
“You kissed me back.”
She pressed her lips together, her blood throbbing in her veins. “That was a mistake.”
“You didn’t like it?”
“That doesn’t matter.”
He closed the distance between them. One finger skated down her cheek. “Doesn’t it?”
“Get out.” She pointed toward the sunlight glinting over Harley’s head. “Now.”
“But I—”
“Now!”
“Everything alright in here?”
She ducked her head at Maverick’s voice and turned, wiping her eyes on her sleeve. “Jared
was just leaving,” she said without turning.
“Glad to show him the way,” Maverick drawled, a hint of menace entering his voice.
“No need.” The ache in Jared’s voice made her heart clench as tight as a fist. “Bye, Amberley.”
She didn’t release her breath until she heard the stall door click closed behind him.
“You sure you’re alright?” asked Maverick, his deep voice now full of concern.
“I’ll be fine.”
When the world fell silent again, she buried her face in Harley’s soft mane, not fine at all.
How could she have kissed her best friend?

About the Author

In a quest to provide her ELA students with quality reading material, educator Karen Rock read everything out there and couldn't wait to add her voice to the genre. In addition to her work as a Young Adult romance novelist, she's now an author for Harlequin's Heartwarming line and thrilled to pen stories that moms can share with their teenage daughters. She's loved Harlequin books since she spent summers going through her grandmother's Presents books that she passed along in paper grocery bags each year. As half of the writing duo J.K. Rock, Karen also pens young adult romance. When she's not busy writing, Karen enjoys scouring estate sales for vintage books, cooking her grandmother's family recipes, reinventing her gardens to suit her moods and occasionally rescuing local wildlife from neighborhood cats. She lives in the Adirondack Mountain region with her husband, her very appreciated beta-reader daughter, and two Cavalier King cocker spaniels, who have yet to understand the concept of "fetch" though they know a lot about love.
