Most girls never learn conflict resolution. When they feel hurt or upset, they blow up or bottle it up. They give the offender a piece of their mind, or they pretend they’re fine while letting the truth seep out through underhanded jabs, cold shoulders, and passive- aggressive remarks.

What starts as a conflict between two girls often escalates into an issue between two groups as word spreads and people takes sides. A girl gets her feelings hurt, and rather than talk with the person who hurt her, she talks it out with everyone but that person.

Synopsis

As a duchess, she can use her position to help the lowest of society―the women forced into prostitution because they have no skills or hope. Her endeavors are not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she'd remain in the background as he ordered.

Can the duke succeed in relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?

My Review

Charlotte is the kind of character that I find easy to relate to in fiction. She loves reading, wants to do what is right but also speaks up, even when it is unpopular, and is compassionate and sacrificial. I loved her newfound passion for helping unfortunate women and the way she developed confidence in herself and in her new role. Marcus has quite a bit on his plate being an unexpected duke, an undercover agent, and new groom. I wish we knew more about his emotions in the early stages of his relationship with Charlotte, but he was just too good at repressing and compartmentalizing. The intrigue of the mystery he is trying to solve comes and goes throughout the book and seems to slow the pace rather than increase it. I enjoyed the focus on Charlotte and the way she navigates the new relationships in her life- husband, difficult mother-in-law, genuine friends, secret half sister, and converted former madam. There is a faith element woven in that is not often emphasized in Regency fiction, and I appreciated the way it gave hope and inspiration to the characters. I hope there will continue to be more in this series!

What inspired you to write READY TO TRUST? 

Ready to Trust is the second book in the Hearts of Oklahoma series about the Rainbolt siblings who were raised by the oldest sibling, Mitch. Book 2, Ready to Trust is Reece’s story. I wanted to write about a black sheep who was called back to the flock. That’s Reece. A hunky hero with a heart for the Lord who knows only too well about making mistakes and asking for forgiveness. I think deep down inside I wanted to share that Christian men can be hunky and still be faith heroes.

My Review

5 stars / It was amazing

This author’s stories are always a delight to read, even when she tackles difficult themes. Her characters are so vibrant, and I find myself completely immersed. I love the friendship between Mark and Beryl, and the way he thoughtfully supports her unconditionally. He is in such a hard position, divided between loyalty to his brother and his own romantic feelings. His relationship with his brother is complex, and it was interesting to see bits and pieces emerge that gave deeper understanding to the dynamic. Beryl struggles with frequent bouts of melancholy, what we know today as depression. The author was delicate in her portrayal as she explored the ways it affected Beryl’s well-being, her otherwise golden personality, and how she managed to cope with the symptoms, despite the misunderstandings in the medical field at the time. What I especially loved was the overall feeling of hopefulness as Mark learns of her condition and becomes her champion- listening, understanding, and encouraging. It was such a contrast to the others in her life who were trying, but didn’t know where to find the answers or how to “fix it.” Beryl is going through a season of self-discovery, and I loved her strength and kindness as she learns more about herself and what she truly wants for her future. Highly recommend!!!

“You like her.” Sam pointed her spoon at him. “You like Evangeline!”

He let his shirt fall into place and crossed to the freezer. “You’re off duty and it’s past your bedtime. Stop throwing accusations around.”

“Mark Bryant MacLaughlin, you’re in denial.” Sam shut the freezer door before he could grab his ice cream. “Admit it. You. Like. Evangeline. Taylor!”

“Could you not yell in my face?” Using his height to his advantage, he blocked her with his shoulders, then grabbed the butter pecan gelato. “I didn’t say I like her, and I haven’t given you cause to think that. Now, if you could excuse me, I’d like to enjoy my ice cream before work.”

Sam let out a sigh. “Come on, bro. I’ve known you for twenty-nine years. Almost thirty. Also, you’re getting old, so you should probably settle down and have a family before Mom disowns you and adopts another son.”

Mark leaned a hip against the counter and took a bite of gelato. “First of all, thirty-one is not old. And—”

“You’ll be thirty-two this fall.”

“But I’m not there yet, am I? Anyhow, thirty-one is not old, and I haven’t found the right woman yet. What about you? You’re nearly the big three-o and you’ve yet to find a husband. A highway goes two ways, sis.”

“Yeah, well, I wasn’t talking about me.” She grinned. “So… Are you gonna ask her out?”

“Really? If I wouldn’t end up getting charged for assault by my own sister, I’d throw this spoon at you.”

“No, you wouldn’t. You’re a softie. Look, Mark, all I’m saying is that I saw how your face lit up when I said her name. I know that she’s not from here and that breaks your ‘shop local’ rules, but I also know my brother. And he doesn’t let minor details get in the way of what he wants. “Sam. She’s from Washington state.”

“Fine. But I’m just saying, you haven’t lit up like this in a long time. If ever. Even Ettie noticed it when you finally came back to the station yesterday.”

“You weren’t even at work yesterday, so how would you know? Besides that, Ettie would notice a caterpillar that likes another caterpillar, Sam. That’s a poor example to support your case. Remind me again how you passed your state patrol training?”
